Precise measurement of the 222Rn half-life: a probe to monitor the stability of radioactivity

We give the results of a study on the 222Rn decay we performed in the Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) by detecting the gamma rays from the radon progeny. The motivation was to monitor the stability of radioactivity measuring several times per year the half-life of a short lifetime (days) source instead of measuring over a long period the activity of a long lifetime (tens or hundreds of years) source. In particular, we give a possible reason of the large periodical fluctuations in the count rate of the gamma rays due to radon inside a closed canister which has been described in literature and which has been attributed to a possible influence of a component in the solar irradiation affecting the nuclear decay rates. We then provide the result of four half-life measurements we performed underground at LNGS in the period from May 2014 to January 2015 with radon diffused into olive oil. Briefly, we did not measure any change of the 222Rn half-life with a 8*10^-5 precision. Finally, we provide the most precise value for the 222Rn half-life: 3.82146(16){stat}(4){syst} days.

Topological Index Theorem on the Lattice through the Spectral Flow of Staggered Fermions

We investigate numerically the spectral flow introduced by Adams for the staggered Dirac operator on realistic (quenched) gauge configurations. We obtain clear numerical evidence that the definition works as expected: there is a clear separation between crossings near and far away from the origin, and the topological charge defined through the crossings near the origin agrees, for most configurations, with the one defined through the near-zero modes of large taste-singlet chirality of the staggered Dirac operator. The crossings are much closer to the origin if we improve the Dirac operator used in the definition, and they move towards the origin as we decrease the lattice spacing.

Search for time modulations in the decay rate of 40K and 232Th

Time modulations at per mil level have been reported to take place in the decay constant of about 15 nuclei with period of one year (most cases) but also of about one month or one day. In this paper we give the results of the activity measurement of a 40K source and a 232Th one. The two experiments have been done at the Gran Sasso Laboratory during a period of about 500 days, above ground (40K) and underground (232Th) with a target sensitivity of a few parts over 10^5. We also give the results of the activity measurement at the time of the X-class solar flares which took place in May 2013. Briefly, our measurements do not show any evidence of unexpected time dependence in the decay rate of 40K and 232Th.

Phase structure of a generalized Nambu Jona-Lasinio model with Wilson fermions in the mean field or large $N$-expansion

We analyze the vacuum structure of a generalized lattice Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with two flavors of Wilson fermions, such that its continuum action is the most general four-fermion action with 'trivial' color interactions, and having a $SU(2)_V x SU(2)_A$ symmetry in the chiral limit. The phase structure of this model in the space of the two four-fermion couplings shows, in addition to the standard Aoki phases, new phases with $<\barψγ_5ψ> != 0$, in close analogy to similar results recently suggested by some of us for lattice QCD with two degenerate Wilson fermions. This result shows how the phase structure of an effective model for low energy QCD cannot be entirely understood from Wilson Chiral Perturbation Theory, based on the standard QCD chiral effective Lagrangian approach.

Search for correlations between solar flares and decay rate of radioactive nuclei

The deacay rate of three different radioactive sources 40K, 137Cs and natTh has been measured with NaI and Ge detectors. Data have been analyzed to search for possible variations in coincidence with the two strongest solar flares of the years 2011 and 2012. No significant deviations from standard expectation have been observed, with a few 10-4 sensitivity. As a consequence, we could not find any effect like that recently reported by Jenkins and Fischbach: a few per mil decrease in the decay rate of 54Mn during solar flares in December 2006.

Search for the time dependence of the 137Cs decay constant

Starting from June 2011, the activity of a 137Cs source has been measured by means of a HPGe detector installed deep underground in the Gran Sasso Laboratory. In total about 5100 energy spectra, one hour measuring time each, have been collected. These data allowed the search for time variations of the decay constant with periods from a few hours to 1 year. No signal with amplitude larger than 9.6{\cdot}10-5 at 95% C.L. has been detected. These limits are more than one order of magnitude lower than the values on the oscillation amplitude reported in literature. In particular, for 1 year period an oscillation amplitude larger than 8.5{\cdot}10-5 has been excluded at 95% C.L., independently of the phase. The same data give a value of 29.96{\pm}0.08 years for the 137Cs half life, in good agreement with the world mean value of 30.05{\pm}0.08 years.

U and Th content in the Central Apennines continental crust: a contribution to the determination of the geo-neutrinos flux at LNGS

The regional contribution to the geo-neutrino signal at Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) was determined based on a detailed geological, geochemical and geophysical study of the region. U and Th abundances of more than 50 samples representative of the main lithotypes belonging to the Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary cover were analyzed. Sedimentary rocks were grouped into four main "Reservoirs" based on similar paleogeographic conditions and mineralogy. Basement rocks do not outcrop in the area. Thus U and Th in the Upper and Lower Crust of Valsugana and Ivrea-Verbano areas were analyzed. Based on geological and geophysical properties, relative abundances of the various reservoirs were calculated and used to obtain the weighted U and Th abundances for each of the three geological layers (Sedimentary Cover, Upper and Lower Crust). Using the available seismic profile as well as the stratigraphic records from a number of exploration wells, a 3D modelling was developed over an area of 2^{\circ}x2^{\circ} down to the Moho depth, for a total volume of about 1.2x10^6 km^3. This model allowed us to determine the volume of the various geological layers and eventually integrate the Th and U contents of the whole crust beneath LNGS. On this base the local contribution to the geo-neutrino flux (S) was calculated and added to the contribution given by the rest of the world, yielding a Refined Reference Model prediction for the geo-neutrino signal in the Borexino detector at LNGS: S(U) = (28.7 \pm 3.9) TNU and S(Th) = (7.5 \pm 1.0) TNU. An excess over the total flux of about 4 TNU was previously obtained by Mantovani et al. (2004) who calculated, based on general worldwide assumptions, a signal of 40.5 TNU. The considerable thickness of the sedimentary rocks, almost predominantly represented by U- and Th- poor carbonatic rocks in the area near LNGS, is responsible for this difference.

Parity Realization in Lattice QCD with Ginsparg-Wilson Fermions

The Vafa-Witten arguments on the realization of parity and flavour symmetries in the QCD vacuum do not apply to two lattice regularizations of QCD which are able to reproduce the chiral anomaly: Wilson fermions and Ginsparg-Wilson fermions. We show here how using the last regularization one can get, from first principles, that the more standard order parameters for these symmetries take a vanishing vacuum expectation value for any number of flavours, if quarks have a non-vanishing mass.

The Aoki phase revisited

In order to elucidate the vacuum structure of the Aoki phase, we carried out a numerical investigation of QCD with two flavours of Wilson fermions, within the p.d.f. framework and in the absence of external sources. The simulations performed at V = 44 suggest a rich vacuum structure, where the observable $i\barψγ_5ψ$ is allowed to take non-zero values of the same order of magnitude than the order parameter of the Aoki phase $i\barψγ_5τ_3ψ$. However, the simulation at higher volumes V = 6^4 suffers from large statistical errors.

Understanding the Aoki phase

The vacuum structure of QCD with two degenerated flavours of Wilson fermions is discussed by means of the p.d.f. (probability distribution function) formalism. Under certain assumptions, either new phases related to Aoki's appear, characterized by a non-vanishing expectation value of the condensate $i\barψ_uγ_5ψ_u + i\barψ_dγ_5ψ_d$, enriching the standard picture of the QCD vacuum structure with Wilson fermions; or the eigenvalues of the Dirac-Wilson operator must comply with a non-trivial, infinite set of sum rules, enforcing the currently accepted structure of the Aoki vacuum. The same scenario is analyzed using the Ginsparg-Wilson regularization. In this case, the absence of any parity and/or flavour breaking phase is proved for a non-zero value of the fermion mass.

Parity realization in Vector-like theories from Fermion Bilinears

We reconsider in this paper the old aim of trying to understand if the observed realization of discrete symmetries as Parity or CP in the QCD vacuum can be satisfied from first principles. We show how under the appropriate assumptions implicitely done by Vafa and Witten in their old paper on parity realization in vector-like theories, all parity and CP odd operators constructed from fermion bilinears of the form $\barψ\tilde Oψ$ should take a vanishing vacuum expectation value in a vector-like theory with N degenerate flavours (N>1). In our analysis the Vafa-Witten theorem on the impossibility to break spontaneously the flavour symmetry in a vector-like theory plays a fundamental role.

The gauged Nambu - Jona Lasinio model: a mean field calculation with non mean field exponents

We analyse the phase diagram of the lattice gauged Nambu-Jona Lasinio model with the help of a mean field approximation plus numerical simulations. We find a phase transition line in the coupling parameters space separating the chirally broken phase from the symmetric phase, which is in good qualitative agreement with results obtained in the quenched-ladder approximation. The mean field approximation relates the critical exponents along the continuous phase transition line with the mass dependence of the chiral condensate in the Coulomb phase of standard noncompact $QED$. Our numerical results for noncompact $QED$ strongly suggest non mean field exponents along the critical line.

A new approach to noncompact lattice qed with light fermions

We discuss detailed simulations of the non compact abelian model coupled to light fermions, using a method previously developed that includes the effects of the fermionic interactions in an effective action. The approximations involved are related to an expansion in the flavour number. We address the problem of the (non) triviality of the theory through a study of the analytical properties of the effective action as a function of the pure gauge energy. New numerical results for the plaquette energy, chiral condensate and a qualitative analysis of the phase diagram are also presented.

Renormalization group and triviality in noncompact lattice QED with light fermions

In the framework of noncompact lattice QED with light fermions, we derive the functional dependence of the average energy per plaquette on the bare parameters using block-spin Renormalization Group arguments and assuming that the renormalized coupling vanishes. Our numerical results for this quantity in $8^4$ and $10^4$ lattices show evidence for triviality in the weak coupling phase and point to a non vanishing value for the renormalized coupling constant in the strong coupling phase.
