Measurement of muon neutrino induced charged current interactions without charged pions in the final state using a new T2K off-axis near detector WAGASCI-BabyMIND

We report a flux-integrated cross section measurement of muon neutrino interactions on water and hydrocarbon via charged current reactions without charged pions in the final state with the WAGASCI-BabyMIND detector which was installed in the T2K near detector hall in 2018. The detector is located 1.5$^\circ$ off-axis and is exposed to a more energetic neutrino flux than ND280, another T2K near detector, which is located at a different off-axis position. The total flux-integrated cross section is measured to be $1.26 \pm 0.18\,(stat.+syst.) \times 10^{-39} $ $\mathrm{cm^{2}/nucleon}$ on CH and $1.44 \pm 0.21\,(stat.+syst.) \times 10^{-39} $ $\mathrm{cm^{2}/nucleon}$ on H$_{2}$O. These results are compared to model predictions provided by the NEUT v5.3.2 and GENIE v2.8.0 MC generators and the measurements are compatible with these models. Differential cross sections in muon momentum and cosine of the muon scattering angle are also reported. This is the first such measurement reported with the WAGASCI-BabyMIND detector and utilizes the 2020 and 2021 datasets.

Measurement of solar neutrino interaction rate below 3.49 MeV in Super-Kamiokande-IV

Super-Kamiokande has observed $^{8}\text{B}$ solar neutrino elastic scattering at recoil electron kinetic energies ($E_{kin}$) as low as 3.49 MeV to study neutrino flavor conversion within the sun. At SK-observable energies, these conversions are dominated by the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effect. An upturn in the electron neutrino survival probability in which vacuum neutrino oscillations become dominant is predicted to occur at lower energies, but radioactive background increases exponentially with decreasing energy. New machine learning approaches provide substantial background reduction below 3.49 MeV such that statistical extraction of solar neutrino interactions becomes feasible. This article presents an analysis of the solar neutrino interaction rate at $E_{kin}$ < 3.49 MeV with the full SK-IV period, using data from a wideband intelligent trigger when available and with a boosted decision tree for event selection. A solar neutrino signal is observed between 2.99 MeV < $E_{kin}$ < 3.49 MeV with $2.76σ$ significance and a data to unoscillated MC ratio of $0.307^{+0.112}_{-0.111}$. This additional low energy data has a negligible effect on the $1σ$ intervals of the fits to the solar neutrino energy spectrum but has a noticeable effect on the best fit when using the exponential parameterization.

Results from the T2K experiment on neutrino mixing including a new far detector $μ$-like sample

We have made improved measurements of three-flavor neutrino mixing with 19.7(16.3)$\times 10^{20}$ protons on target in (anti-)neutrino-enhanced beam modes. A new sample of muon-neutrino events with tagged pions has been added at the far detector, as well as new proton and photon-tagged samples at the near detector. Significant improvements have been made to the flux and neutrino interaction modeling. T2K data continue to prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of $\sin^2θ_{23}$ with a near-maximal value of the charge-parity violating phase with best-fit values in the normal ordering of $δ_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{CP}}=-2.18\substack{+1.22 \\ -0.47}$, $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.559\substack{+0.018 \\ -0.078}$ and $Δm^2_{32}=(+2.506\substack{+0.039 \\ -0.052})\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^{2}$.

Measurement of $γ$-ray production via the neutron-$^{16}$O reaction using a 77 MeV quasi-monoenergetic neutron beam

Understanding of $γ$-ray production via neutron interactions on oxygen is essential for the study of neutrino neutral-current quasielastic interactions in water Cherenkov detectors. A measurement of $γ$-ray production from such reactions was performed using a 77~MeV quasi-monoenergetic neutron beam. Several $γ$-ray peaks, which are expected to come from neutron-${\rm ^{16}O}$ reactions, are observed and production cross sections are measured for nine $γ$-ray components of energies between 2 and 8~MeV. These are the first measurements at this neutron energy using a nearly monoenergetic beam.

CALET Search for electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational waves during the LIGO/Virgo O3 run

The CALorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) on the International Space Station (ISS) consists of a high-energy cosmic ray CALorimeter (CAL) and a lower-energy CALET Gamma ray Burst Monitor (CGBM). CAL is sensitive to electrons up to 20 TeV, cosmic ray nuclei from Z = 1 through Z $\sim$ 40, and gamma rays over the range 1 GeV - 10 TeV. CGBM observes gamma rays from 7 keV to 20 MeV. The combined CAL-CGBM instrument has conducted a search for gamma ray bursts (GRBs) since Oct. 2015. We report here on the results of a search for X-ray/gamma ray counterparts to gravitational wave events reported during the LIGO/Virgo observing run O3. No events have been detected that pass all acceptance criteria. We describe the components, performance, and triggering algorithms of the CGBM - the two Hard X-ray Monitors (HXM) consisting of LaBr$_{3}$(Ce) scintillators sensitive to 7 keV to 1 MeV gamma rays and a Soft Gamma ray Monitor (SGM) BGO scintillator sensitive to 40 keV to 20 MeV - and the high-energy CAL consisting of a CHarge-Detection module (CHD), IMaging Calorimeter (IMC), and fully active Total Absorption Calorimeter (TASC). The analysis procedure is described and upper limits to the time-averaged fluxes are presented.

Direct Measurement of the Nickel Spectrum in Cosmic Rays in the Energy Range from 8.8 GeV/n to 240 GeV/n with CALET on the International Space Station

The relative abundance of cosmic ray nickel nuclei with respect to iron is by far larger than for all other trans-iron elements, therefore it provides a favorable opportunity for a low background measurement of its spectrum. Since nickel, as well as iron, is one of the most stable nuclei, the nickel energy spectrum and its relative abundance with respect to iron provide important information to estimate the abundances at the cosmic ray source and to model the Galactic propagation of heavy nuclei. However, only a few direct measurements of cosmic-ray nickel at energy larger than $ \sim$ 3 GeV/n are available at present in the literature and they are affected by strong limitations in both energy reach and statistics. In this paper we present a measurement of the differential energy spectrum of nickel in the energy range from 8.8 to 240 GeV/n, carried out with unprecedented precision by the Calorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) in operation on the International Space Station since 2015. The CALET instrument can identify individual nuclear species via a measurement of their electric charge with a dynamic range extending far beyond iron (up to atomic number $ Z $ = 40). The particle's energy is measured by a homogeneous calorimeter (1.2 proton interaction lengths, 27 radiation lengths) preceded by a thin imaging section (3 radiation lengths) providing tracking and energy sampling. This paper follows our previous measurement of the iron spectrum [O. Adriani et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 241101 (2021).], and it extends our investigation on the energy dependence of the spectral index of heavy elements. It reports the analysis of nickel data collected from November 2015 to May 2021 and a detailed assessment of the systematic uncertainties. In the region from 20 to 240 GeV$ /n $ our present data are compatible within the errors with a single power law with spectral index $ -2.51 \pm 0.07 $.

Observation of Spectral Structures in the Flux of Cosmic-Ray Protons from 50 GeV to 60 TeV with the Calorimetric Electron Telescope on the International Space Station

A precise measurement of the cosmic-ray proton spectrum with the Calorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) is presented in the energy interval from 50 GeV to 60 TeV, and the observation of a softening of the spectrum above 10 TeV is reported. The analysis is based on the data collected during $\sim$6.2 years of smooth operations aboard the International Space Station and covers a broader energy range with respect to the previous proton flux measurement by CALET, with an increase of the available statistics by a factor of $\sim$2.2. Above a few hundred GeV we confirm our previous observation of a progressive spectral hardening with a higher significance (more than 20 sigma). In the multi-TeV region we observe a second spectral feature with a softening around 10 TeV and a spectral index change from =2.6 to -2.9 consistently, within the errors, with the shape of the spectrum reported by DAMPE. We apply a simultaneous fit of the proton differential spectrum which well reproduces the gradual change of the spectral index encompassing the lower energy power-law regime and the two spectral features observed at higher energies.

Pre-Supernova Alert System for Super-Kamiokande

In 2020, the Super-Kamiokande (SK) experiment moved to a new stage (SK-Gd) in which gadolinium (Gd) sulfate octahydrate was added to the water in the detector, enhancing the efficiency to detect thermal neutrons and consequently improving the sensitivity to low energy electron anti-neutrinos from inverse beta decay (IBD) interactions. SK-Gd has the potential to provide early alerts of incipient core-collapse supernovae through detection of electron anti-neutrinos from thermal and nuclear processes responsible for the cooling of massive stars before the gravitational collapse of their cores. These pre-supernova neutrinos emitted during the silicon burning phase can exceed the energy threshold for IBD reactions. We present the sensitivity of SK-Gd to pre-supernova stars and the techniques used for the development of a pre-supernova alarm based on the detection of these neutrinos in SK, as well as prospects for future SK-Gd phases with higher concentrations of Gd. For the current SK-Gd phase, high-confidence alerts for Betelgeuse could be issued up to nine hours in advance of the core-collapse itself.

Scintillator ageing of the T2K near detectors from 2010 to 2021

The T2K experiment widely uses plastic scintillator as a target for neutrino interactions and an active medium for the measurement of charged particles produced in neutrino interactions at its near detector complex. Over 10 years of operation the measured light yield recorded by the scintillator based subsystems has been observed to degrade by 0.9--2.2\% per year. Extrapolation of the degradation rate through to 2040 indicates the recorded light yield should remain above the lower threshold used by the current reconstruction algorithms for all subsystems. This will allow the near detectors to continue contributing to important physics measurements during the T2K-II and Hyper-Kamiokande eras. Additionally, work to disentangle the degradation of the plastic scintillator and wavelength shifting fibres shows that the reduction in light yield can be attributed to the ageing of the plastic scintillator.

Search for proton decay via $p\rightarrow μ^+K^0$ in 0.37 megaton-years exposure of Super-Kamiokande

We searched for proton decay via $p\toμ^+K^0$ in 0.37\,Mton$\cdot$years of data collected between 1996 and 2018 from the Super-Kamiokande water Cherenkov experiment. The selection criteria were defined separately for $K^0_S$ and $K^0_L$ channels. No significant event excess has been observed. As a result of this analysis, which extends the previous search by an additional 0.2\,Mton$\cdot$years of exposure and uses an improved event reconstruction, we set a lower limit of $3.6\times10^{33}$ years on the proton lifetime.

Search for solar electron anti-neutrinos due to spin-flavor precession in the Sun with Super-Kamiokande-IV

Due to a very low production rate of electron anti-neutrinos ($\barν_e$) via nuclear fusion in the Sun, a flux of solar $\barν_e$ is unexpected. An appearance of $\barν_e$ in solar neutrino flux opens a new window for the new physics beyond the standard model. In particular, a spin-flavor precession process is expected to convert an electron neutrino into an electron anti-neutrino (${ν_e\to\barν_e}$) when neutrino has a finite magnetic moment. In this work, we have searched for solar $\barν_e$ in the Super-Kamiokande experiment, using neutron tagging to identify their inverse beta decay signature. We identified 78 $\barν_e$ candidates for neutrino energies of 9.3 to 17.3 MeV in 2970.1 live days with a fiducial volume of 22.5 kiloton water (183.0 kton$\cdot$year exposure). The energy spectrum has been consistent with background predictions and we thus derived a 90% confidence level upper limit of ${4.7\times10^{-4}}$ on the $ν_e\to\barν_e$ conversion probability in the Sun. We used this result to evaluate the sensitivity of future experiments, notably the Super-Kamiokande Gadolinium (SK-Gd) upgrade.

Characterization of resistive Micromegas detectors for the upgrade of the T2K Near Detector Time Projection Chambers

The second phase of the T2K experiment is expected to start data taking in autumn 2022. An upgrade of the Near Detector (ND280) is under development and includes the construction of two new Time Projection Chambers called High-Angle TPC (HA-TPC). The two endplates of these TPCs will be paved with eight Micromegas type charge readout modules. The Micromegas detector charge amplification structure uses a resistive anode to spread the charges over several pads to improve the space point resolution. This innovative technique is combined with the bulk-Micromegas technology to compose the "Encapsulated Resistive Anode Micromegas" detector. A prototype has been designed, built and exposed to an electron beam at the DESY II test beam facility. The data have been used to characterize the charge spreading and to produce a RC map. Spatial resolution better than 600 $μ$m and energy resolution better than 9% are obtained for all incident angles. These performances fulfil the requirements for the upgrade of the ND280 TPC.

Constraint on the Matter-Antimatter Symmetry-Violating Phase in Neutrino Oscillations

The current laws of physics do not explain the observed imbalance of matter and antimatter in the universe. Sakharov proposed that an explanation would require the violation of CP symmetry between matter and antimatter. The only CP violation observed so far is in the weak interactions of quarks, and it is too small to explain the matter-antimatter imbalance of the universe. It has been shown that CP violation in the lepton sector could generate the matter-antimatter disparity through the process called leptogenesis. The quantum mixing of neutrinos, the neutral leptons in the Standard Model, provides a potential source of CP violation through a complex phase dCP, which may have consequences for theoretical models of leptogenesis. This CP violation can be measured in muon neutrino to electron neutrino oscillations and the corresponding antineutrino oscillations, which are experimentally accessible with accelerator-produced beams as established by the T2K experiment. Until now, the value of dCP has not been significantly constrained by neutrino oscillation experiments. Here the T2K collaboration reports a measurement that favors large enhancement of the neutrino oscillation probability, excluding values of dCP which result in a large enhancement of the observed anti-neutrino oscillation probability at three standard deviations (3 sigma). The 3 sigma confidence level interval for dCP, which is cyclic and repeats every 2pi, is [-3.41,-0.03] for the so-called normal mass ordering, and [-2.54,-0.32] for the inverted mass ordering. Our results show an indication of CP violation in the lepton sector. Herein we establish methods for sensitive searches for matter-antimatter asymmetry in neutrino oscillations using accelerator-produced neutrino beams. Future measurements with larger data samples will determine whether the leptonic CP violation is larger than the quark sector CP violation.

First Gadolinium Loading to Super-Kamiokande

In order to improve Super-Kamiokande's neutron detection efficiency and to thereby increase its sensitivity to the diffuse supernova neutrino background flux, 13 tons of $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ (gadolinium sulfate octahydrate) was dissolved into the detector's otherwise ultrapure water from July 14 to August 17, 2020, marking the start of the SK-Gd phase of operations. During the loading, water was continuously recirculated at a rate of 60 m$^3$/h, extracting water from the top of the detector and mixing it with concentrated $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ solution to create a 0.02% solution of the Gd compound before injecting it into the bottom of the detector. A clear boundary between the Gd-loaded and pure water was maintained through the loading, enabling monitoring of the loading itself and the spatial uniformity of the Gd concentration over the 35 days it took to reach the top of the detector. During the subsequent commissioning the recirculation rate was increased to 120 m$^3$/h, resulting in a constant and uniform distribution of Gd throughout the detector and water transparency equivalent to that of previous pure-water operation periods. Using an Am-Be neutron calibration source the mean neutron capture time was measured to be $115\pm1$ $μ$s, which corresponds to a Gd concentration of $111\pm2$ ppm, as expected for this level of Gd loading. This paper describes changes made to the water circulation system for this detector upgrade, the Gd loading procedure, detector commissioning, and the first neutron calibration measurements in SK-Gd.

Decay tunnel instrumentation for the ENUBET neutrino beam

The uncertainty in the initial neutrino flux is the main limitation for a precise determination of the absolute neutrino cross section. The ERC funded ENUBET project (2016-2021) is studying a facility based on a narrow band beam to produce an intense source of electron neutrinos with a ten-fold improvement in accuracy. Since March 2019 ENUBET is also a Neutrino Platform experiment at CERN: NP06/ENUBET. A key element of the project is the instrumentation of the decay tunnel to monitor large angle positrons produced together with $ν_e$ in the three body decays of kaons ($K_{e3}$) and to discriminate them from neutral and charged pions. The need for an efficient and high purity e/$π$ separation over a length of several meters, and the requirements for fast response and radiation hardness imposed by the harsh beam environment, suggested the implementation of a longitudinally segmented Fe/scintillator calorimeter with a readout based on WLS fibers and SiPM detectors. An extensive experimental program through several test beam campaigns at the CERN-PS T9 beam line has been pursued on calorimeter prototypes, both with a shashlik and a lateral readout configuration. The latter, in which fibers collect the light from the side of the scintillator tiles, allows to place the light sensors away from the core of the calorimeter, thus reducing possible irradiation damages with respect to the shashlik design. This contribution will present the achievements of the prototyping activities carried out, together with irradiation tests made on the Silicon Photo-Multipliers. The results achieved so far pin down the technology of choice for the construction of the 3 m long demonstrator that will take data in 2021.

First combined measurement of the muon neutrino and antineutrino charged-current cross section without pions in the final state at T2K

This paper presents the first combined measurement of the double-differential muon neutrino and antineutrino charged-current cross sections with no pions in the final state on hydrocarbon at the off-axis near detector of the T2K experiment. The data analyzed in this work comprise 5.8$\times$10$^{20}$ and 6.3$\times$10$^{20}$ protons on target in neutrino and antineutrino mode respectively, at a beam energy peak of 0.6 GeV. Using the two measured cross sections, the sum, difference and asymmetry were calculated with the aim of better understanding the nuclear effects involved in such interactions. The extracted measurements have been compared with the prediction from different Monte Carlo generators and theoretical models showing that the difference between the two cross sections have interesting sensitivity to nuclear effects.

Neutron-Antineutron Oscillation Search using a 0.37 Megaton$\cdot$Year Exposure of Super-Kamiokande

As a baryon number violating process with $ΔB=2$, neutron-antineutron oscillation ($n\to\bar n$) provides a unique test of baryon number conservation. We have performed a search for $n\to\bar n$ oscillation with bound neutrons in Super-Kamiokande, with the full data set from its first four run periods, representing an exposure of 0.37~Mton-years. The search used a multivariate analysis trained on simulated $n\to\bar n$ events and atmospheric neutrino backgrounds and resulted in 11 candidate events with an expected background of 9.3 events. In the absence of statistically significant excess, we derived a lower limit on $\bar n$ appearance lifetime in $^{16}$O nuclei of $3.6\times{10}^{32}$ years and on the neutron-antineutron oscillation time of $τ_{n\to\bar n} > 4.7\times10^{8}$~s at 90\% C.L..

Polysiloxane-based scintillators for shashlik calorimeters

We present the first application of polysiloxane-based scintillators as active medium in a shashlik sampling calorimeter. These results were obtained from a testbeam campaign of a $\sim$6$\times$6$\times$45 cm$^3$ (13 $X_0$ depth) prototype. A Wavelength Shifting fiber array of 36 elements runs perpendicularly to the stack of iron (15 mm) and polysiloxane scintillator (15 mm) tiles with a density of about one over cm$^2$. Unlike shashlik calorimeters based on plastic organic scintillators, here fibers are optically matched with the scintillator without any intermediate air gap. The prototype features a compact light readout based on Silicon Photo-Multipliers embedded in the bulk of the detector. The detector was tested with electrons, pions and muons with energies ranging from 1 to 7 GeV at the CERN-PS. This solution offers a highly radiation hard detector to instrument the decay region of a neutrino beam, providing an event-by-event measurement of high-angle decay products associated with neutrino production (ENUBET, Enhanced NeUtrino BEams from kaon Tagging, ERC project). The results in terms of light yield, uniformity and energy resolution, are compared to a similar calorimeter built with ordinary plastic scintillators.

Search for heavy neutrinos with the T2K near detector ND280

This paper reports on the search for heavy neutrinos with masses in the range $140 < M_N < 493$ MeV/c$^2$ using the off-axis near detector ND280 of the T2K experiment. These particles can be produced from kaon decays in the standard neutrino beam and then subsequently decay in ND280. The decay modes under consideration are $N \to \ell^{\pm}_α π^{\mp}$ and $N \to \ell^+_α \ell^-_β ν(\barν)$ ($α,β=e,μ$). A search for such events has been made using the Time Projection Chambers of ND280, where the background has been reduced to less than two events in the current dataset in all channels. No excess has been observed in the signal region. A combined Bayesian statistical approach has been applied to extract upper limits on the mixing elements of heavy neutrinos to electron-, muon- and tau- flavoured currents ($U_e^2$, $U_μ^2$, $U_τ^2$) as a function of the heavy neutrino mass, e.g. $U_e^2 < 10^{-9}$ at $90\%$ C.L. for a mass of $390$ MeV/c$^2$. These constraints are competitive with previous experiments.

Search for proton decay into three charged leptons in 0.37 megaton-years exposure of the Super-Kamiokande

A search for proton decay into three charged leptons has been performed by using 0.37$\,$Mton$\cdot$years of data collected in Super-Kamiokande. All possible combinations of electrons, muons and their anti-particles consistent with charge conservation were considered as decay modes. No significant excess of events has been found over the background, and lower limits on the proton lifetime divided by the branching ratio have been obtained. The limits range between $9.2\times10^{33}$ to $3.4\times10^{34}$ years at 90$\,$% confidence level, improving by more than an order of magnitude upon limits from previous experiments. A first limit has been set for the $p\rightarrowμ^-e^+e^+$ mode.

Simultaneous measurement of the muon neutrino charged-current cross section on oxygen and carbon without pions in the final state at T2K

This paper reports the first simultaneous measurement of the double differential muon neutrino charged-current cross section on oxygen and carbon without pions in the final state as a function of the outgoing muon kinematics, made at the ND280 off-axis near detector of the T2K experiment. The ratio of the oxygen and carbon cross sections is also provided to help validate various models' ability to extrapolate between carbon and oxygen nuclear targets, as is required in T2K oscillation analyses. The data are taken using a neutrino beam with an energy spectrum peaked at 0.6 GeV. The extracted measurement is compared with the prediction from different Monte Carlo neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators, showing particular model separation for very forward-going muons. Overall, of the models tested, the result is best described using Local Fermi Gas descriptions of the nuclear ground state with RPA suppression.

T2K measurements of muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance using $3.13\times 10^{21}$ protons on target

We report measurements by the T2K experiment of the parameters $θ_{23}$ and $Δm^2_{32}$ which govern the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos in the three-flavor PMNS neutrino oscillation model at T2K's neutrino energy and propagation distance. Utilizing the ability of the experiment to run with either a mainly neutrino or a mainly antineutrino beam, muon-like events from each beam mode are used to measure these parameters separately for neutrino and antineutrino oscillations. Data taken from $1.49 \times 10^{21}$ protons on target (POT) in neutrino mode and $1.64 \times 10^{21}$ POT in antineutrino mode are used. The best-fit values obtained by T2K were $\sin^2\left(θ_{23}\right)=0.51^{+0.06}_{-0.07} \left(0.43^{+0.21}_{-0.05}\right)$ and $Δm^2_{32}=2.47^{+0.08}_{-0.09} \left(2.50^{+0.18}_{-0.13}\right)$\evmass for neutrinos (antineutrinos). No significant differences between the values of the parameters describing the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos were observed. An analysis using an effective two-flavor neutrino oscillation model where the sine of the mixing angle is allowed to take non-physical values larger than 1 is also performed to check the consistency of our data with the three-flavor model. Our data were found to be consistent with a physical value for the mixing angle.

The ENUBET positron tagger prototype: construction and testbeam performance

A prototype for the instrumented decay tunnel of ENUBET was tested in 2018 at the CERN East Area facility with charged particles up to 5 GeV. This detector is a longitudinal sampling calorimeter with lateral scintillation light readout. The calorimeter was equipped by an additional "$t_0$-layer" for timing and photon discrimination. The performance of this detector in terms of electron energy resolution, linearity, response to muons and hadron showers are presented in this paper and compared with simulation. The $t_0$-layer was studied both in standalone mode using pion charge exchange and in combined mode with the calorimeter to assess the light yield and the 1 mip/2 mip separation capability. We demonstrate that this system fulfills the requirements for neutrino physics applications and discuss performance and additional improvements.

The Hyper-Kamiokande Experiment -- Snowmass LOI

Hyper-Kamiokande is the next generation underground water Cherenkov detector that builds on the highly successful Super-Kamiokande experiment. The detector which has an 8.4~times larger effective volume than its predecessor will be located along the T2K neutrino beamline and utilize an upgraded J-PARC beam with 2.6~times beam power. Hyper-K's low energy threshold combined with the very large fiducial volume make the detector unique, that is expected to acquire an unprecedented exposure of 3.8~Mton$\cdot$year over a period of 20~years of operation. Hyper-Kamiokande combines an extremely diverse science program including nucleon decays, long-baseline neutrino oscillations, atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astrophysical origins. The scientific scope of this program is highly complementary to liquid-argon detectors for example in sensitivity to nucleon decay channels or supernova detection modes. Hyper-Kamiokande construction has started in early 2020 and the experiment is expected to start operations in 2027. The Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration is presently being formed amongst groups from 19 countries including the United States, whose community has a long history of making significant contributions to the neutrino physics program in Japan. US physicists have played leading roles in the Kamiokande, Super-Kamiokande, EGADS, K2K, and T2K programs.

Direct Measurement of the Cosmic-Ray Proton Spectrum from 50 GeV to 10 TeV with the Calorimetric Electron Telescope on the International Space Station

In this paper, we present the analysis and results of a direct measurement of the cosmic-ray proton spectrum with the CALET instrument onboard the International Space Station, including the detailed assessment of systematic uncertainties. The observation period used in this analysis is from October 13, 2015 to August 31, 2018 (1054 days). We have achieved the very wide energy range necessary to carry out measurements of the spectrum from 50 GeV to 10 TeV covering, for the first time in space, with a single instrument the whole energy interval previously investigated in most cases in separate subranges by magnetic spectrometers (BESS-TeV, PAMELA, and AMS-02) and calorimetric instruments (ATIC, CREAM, and NUCLEON). The observed spectrum is consistent with AMS-02 but extends to nearly an order of magnitude higher energy, showing a very smooth transition of the power-law spectral index from -2.81 +- 0.03 (50--500 GeV) neglecting solar modulation effects (or -2.87 +- 0.06 including solar modulation effects in the lower energy region) to -2.56 +- 0.04 (1--10 TeV), thereby confirming the existence of spectral hardening and providing evidence of a deviation from a single power law by more than 3 sigma.

The measured flux-averaged cross sections on oxygen nuclei are $\langle σ_{ν{\rm -NCQE}} \rangle = 1.70 \pm 0.17 ({\rm stat.}) ^{+ {\rm 0.51}}_{- {\rm 0.38}} ({\rm syst.}) \times 10^{-38} \ {\rm cm^2/oxygen}$ with a flux-averaged energy of 0.82 GeV and $\langle σ_{\barν {\rm -NCQE}} \rangle = 0.98 \pm 0.16 ({\rm stat.}) ^{+ {\rm 0.26}}_{- {\rm 0.19}} ({\rm syst.}) \times 10^{-38} \ {\rm cm^2/oxygen}$ with a flux-averaged energy of 0.68 GeV, for neutrinos and antineutrinos, respectively. These results are the most precise to date, and the antineutrino result is the first cross section measurement of this channel. They are compared with various theoretical predictions. The impact on evaluation of backgrounds to searches for supernova relic neutrinos at present and future water Cherenkov detectors is also discussed.

Measurement of the muon neutrino charged-current single $π^+$ production on hydrocarbon using the T2K off-axis near detector ND280

We report the measurements of single and double differential cross section of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon with a single positively charged pion in the final state at the T2K off-axis near detector using $5.56\times10^{20}$ protons on target. The analysis uses data control samples for the background subtraction and the cross section signal, defined as a single negatively charged muon and a single positively charged pion exiting from the target nucleus, is extracted using an unfolding method. The model dependent cross section, integrated over the T2K off-axis neutrino beam spectrum peaking at $0.6$~GeV, is measured to be $σ= (11.76 \pm 0.44 \text{(stat)} \pm 2.39 \text{(syst)}) \times 10^{-40} \text{cm}^2$~$\text{nucleon}^{-1}$. Various differential cross sections are measured, including the first measurement of the Adler angles for single charged pion production in neutrino interactions with heavy nuclei target.

Performances of a resistive MicroMegas module for the Time Projection Chambers of the T2K Near Detector upgrade

An upgrade of the Near Detector of the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, ND280, has been proposed. This upgrade will include two new Time Projection Chambers, each equipped with 16 resistive MicroMegas modules for gas amplification. A first prototype of resistive MicroMegas has been designed, built, installed in the HARP field cage, and exposed to a beam of charged particles at CERN. The data have been used to characterize the performances of the resistive MicroMegas module. A spatial resolution of 300 $μm$ and a deposited energy resolution of 9% were observed for horizontal electrons crossing the TPCs at 30 cm from the anode. Such performances fully satisfy the requirements for the upgrade of the ND280 TPC.

Search for Astronomical Neutrinos from Blazar TXS0506+056 in Super-Kamiokande

We report a search for astronomical neutrinos in the energy region from several GeV to TeV in the direction of the blazar TXS0506+056 using the Super-Kamiokande detector following the detection of a 100 TeV neutrino from the same location by the IceCube collaboration. Using Super-Kamiokande neutrino data across several data samples observed from April 1996 to February 2018 we have searched for both a total excess above known backgrounds across the entire period as well as localized excesses on smaller time scales in that interval. No significant excess nor significant variation in the observed event rate are found in the blazar direction. Upper limits are placed on the electron and muon neutrino fluxes at 90\% confidence level as $6.03 \times 10^{-7}$ and $4.52 \times 10^{-7}$ to $9.26 \times 10^{-10}$ [${\rm erg}/{\rm cm}^2/{\rm s}$], respectively.

Search for Electron Antineutrino Appearance in a Long-baseline Muon Antineutrino Beam

Electron antineutrino appearance is measured by the T2K experiment in an accelerator-produced antineutrino beam, using additional neutrino beam operation to constrain parameters of the PMNS mixing matrix. T2K observes 15 candidate electron antineutrino events with a background expectation of 9.3 events. Including information from the kinematic distribution of observed events, the hypothesis of no electron antineutrino appearance is disfavored with a significance of 2.40σ and no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions is found. A complementary analysis that introduces an additional free parameter which allows non-PMNS values of electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance also finds no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions.

A model-independent confirmation of the $Z(4430)^-$ state

The decay $B^0\to ψ(2S) K^+π^-$ is analyzed using $\rm 3~fb^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data collected with the LHCb detector. A model-independent description of the $ψ(2S) π$ mass spectrum is obtained, using as input the $Kπ$ mass spectrum and angular distribution derived directly from data, without requiring a theoretical description of resonance shapes or their interference. The hypothesis that the $ψ(2S)π$ mass spectrum can be described in terms of $Kπ$ reflections alone is rejected with more than 8$σ$ significance. This provides confirmation, in a model-independent way, of the need for an additional resonant component in the mass region of the $Z(4430)^-$ exotic state.

A new algorithm for identifying the flavour of $B_s^0$ mesons at LHCb

A new algorithm for the determination of the initial flavour of $B_s^0$ mesons is presented. The algorithm is based on two neural networks and exploits the $b$ hadron production mechanism at a hadron collider. The first network is trained to select charged kaons produced in association with the $B_s^0$ meson. The second network combines the kaon charges to assign the $B_s^0$ flavour and estimates the probability of a wrong assignment. The algorithm is calibrated using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energies. The calibration is performed in two ways: by resolving the $B_s^0$-$\bar{B}_s^0$ flavour oscillations in $B_s^0 \to D_s^- π^+$ decays, and by analysing flavour-specific $B_{s 2}^{*}(5840)^0 \to B^+ K^-$ decays. The tagging power measured in $B_s^0 \to D_s^- π^+$ decays is found to be $(1.80 \pm 0.19({\rm stat}) \pm 0.18({\rm syst}))$\%, which is an improvement of about 50\% compared to a similar algorithm previously used in the LHCb experiment.

A precise measurement of the $B^0$ meson oscillation frequency

The oscillation frequency, $Δm_d$, of $B^0$ mesons is measured using semileptonic decays with a $D^-$ or $D^{*-}$ meson in the final state, in a data sample of $pp$ collisions collected by the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0$\mbox{fb}^{-1}$. A combination of the two decay modes gives $Δm_d = (505.0 \pm 2.1 \pm 1.0) \rm \,ns^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the most precise single measurement of this parameter. It is compatible with the current world average and has similar precision.

Amplitude analysis of $B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-}$ decays

The Dalitz plot analysis technique is used to study the resonant substructures of $B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-}$ decays in a data sample corresponding to 3.0 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. A model-independent analysis of the angular moments demonstrates the presence of resonances with spins 1, 2 and 3 at high $D^{+}π^{-}$ mass. The data are fitted with an amplitude model composed of a quasi-model-independent function to describe the $D^{+}π^{-}$ S-wave together with virtual contributions from the $D^{*}(2007)^{0}$ and $B^{*0}$ states, and components corresponding to the $D^{*}_{2}(2460)^{0}$, $D^{*}_{1}(2680)^{0}$, $D^{*}_{3}(2760)^{0}$ and $D^{*}_{2}(3000)^{0}$ resonances. The masses and widths of these resonances are determined together with the branching fractions for their production in $B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-}$ decays. The $D^{+}π^{-}$ S-wave has phase motion consistent with that expected due to the presence of the $D^{*}_{0}(2400)^{0}$ state. These results constitute the first observations of the $D^{*}_{3}(2760)^{0}$ and $D^{*}_{2}(3000)^{0}$ resonances.

Angular analysis of the $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay using $3\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity

An angular analysis of the $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}(\rightarrow K^{+}π^{-})μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay is presented. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,{\mbox{fb}^{-1}}$ of $pp$ collision data collected at the LHCb experiment. The complete angular information from the decay is used to determine $C\!P$-averaged observables and $C\!P$ asymmetries, taking account of possible contamination from decays with the $K^{+}π^{-}$ system in an S-wave configuration. The angular observables and their correlations are reported in bins of $q^2$, the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system. The observables are determined both from an unbinned maximum likelihood fit and by using the principal moments of the angular distribution. In addition, by fitting for $q^2$-dependent decay amplitudes in the region $1.1<q^{2}<6.0\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}^{2}/c^{4}$, the zero-crossing points of several angular observables are computed. A global fit is performed to the complete set of $C\!P$-averaged observables obtained from the maximum likelihood fit. This fit indicates differences with predictions based on the Standard Model at the level of 3.4 standard deviations. These differences could be explained by contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model, or by an unexpectedly large hadronic effect that is not accounted for in the Standard Model predictions.

ChPT tests at the NA48 and NA62 experiments at CERN

The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the Ke4 modes: Ke4(+-) ($K^\pm \to π^+ π^- e^\pm ν$) and Ke4(00) ($K^\pm \to π^0 π^0 e^\pm ν$) with nearly one percent background contamination. The detailed study of form factors and branching rates, based on these data, has been completed recently. The results brings new inputs to low energy strong interactions description and tests of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) and lattice QCD calculations. In particular, new data support the ChPT prediction for a cusp in the $π^0π^0$ invariant mass spectrum at the two charged pions threshold for Ke4(00) decay. New final results from an analysis of about 400 $K^\pm \to π^\pm γγ$ rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN during low intensity runs with minimum bias trigger configurations are presented. The results include a model-independent decay rate measurement and fits to ChPT description.

Constraints on the unitarity triangle angle $γ$ from Dalitz plot analysis of $B^0 \to D K^+ π^-$ decays

The first study is presented of CP violation with an amplitude analysis of the Dalitz plot of $B^0 \to D K^+ π^-$ decays, with $D \to K^+ π^-$, $K^+ K^-$ and $π^+ π^-$. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to $3.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions collected with the LHCb detector. No significant CP violation effect is seen, and constraints are placed on the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle formed from elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix. Hadronic parameters associated with the $B^0 \to D K^*(892)^0$ decay are determined for the first time. These measurements can be used to improve the sensitivity to $γ$ of existing and future studies of the $B^0 \to D K^*(892)^0$ decay.

Proton-proton collision data are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 $fb^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment. Differential branching fraction measurements are reported in five bins of the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system, $q^2$, between 0.1 and 8.0 $GeV^2/c^4$. For the first time, an angular analysis sensitive to the S-, P- and D-wave contributions of this rare decay is performed. Evidence for exotic hadron contributions to $Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp π^-$ decays

A full amplitude analysis of $Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp π^-$ decays is performed with a data sample acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8 TeV $pp$ collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$. A significantly better description of the data is achieved when, in addition to the previously observed nucleon excitations $N\to pπ^-$, either the $P_c(4380)^+$ and $P_c(4450)^+\to J/ψp$ states, previously observed in $Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp K^-$ decays, or the $Z_c(4200)^-\to J/ψπ^-$ state, previously reported in $B^0 \to J/ψK^+ π^-$ decays, or all three, are included in the amplitude models. The data support a model containing all three exotic states, with a significance of more than three standard deviations. Within uncertainties, the data are consistent with the $P_c(4380)^+$ and $P_c(4450)^+$ production rates expected from their previous observation taking account of Cabibbo suppression.

First observation of $D^0-\bar D^0$ oscillations in $D^0\to K^+π^-π^+π^-$ decays and measurement of the associated coherence parameters

Charm meson oscillations are observed in a time-dependent analysis of the ratio of $D^0\to K^+π^-π^+π^-$ to $D^0\to K^-π^+π^-π^+$ decay rates, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment. The measurements presented are sensitive to the phase-space averaged ratio of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favoured amplitudes $r_{D}^{K3π}$ and the product of the coherence factor $R_{D}^{K3π}$ and a charm mixing parameter $y^{'}_{K3π}$. The constraints measured are $r_{D}^{K3π}=(5.67 \pm 0.12)\times10^{-2}$, which is the most precise determination to date, and $R_{D}^{K3π} \cdot y^{'}_{K3π} = (0.3 \pm 1.8)\times 10^{-3}$, which provides useful input for determinations of the CP-violating phase $γ$ in $B^\pm \to D K^\pm, D \to K^\mpπ^\pmπ^\mpπ^\pm$ decays. The analysis also gives the most precise measurement of the $D^0\to K^+π^-π^+π^-$ branching fraction, and the first observation of $D^0-\bar D^0$ oscillations in this decay mode, with a significance of 8.2 standard deviations.

The $B_{s}^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} K^{*}(892)^{0}$ decay is observed for the first time, with a significance of 7.1 standard deviations. Measurement of double-differential muon neutrino charged-current interactions on C$_8$H$_8$ without pions in the final state using the T2K off-axis beam

We report the measurement of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon without pions in the final state at the T2K beam energy using 5.734$\times10^{20}$ protons on target. For the first time the measurement is reported as a flux-integrated, double-differential cross-section in muon kinematic variables ($\cosθ_μ$, $p_μ$), without correcting for events where a pion is produced and then absorbed by final state interactions. Two analyses are performed with different selections, background evaluations and cross-section extraction methods to demonstrate the robustness of the results against biases due to model-dependent assumptions. The measurements compare favorably with recent models which include nucleon-nucleon correlations but, given the present precision, the measurement does not solve the degeneracy between different models. The data also agree with Monte Carlo simulations which use effective parameters that are tuned to external data to describe the nuclear effects. The total cross-section in the full phase space is $σ= (0.417 \pm 0.047 \text{(syst)} \pm 0.005 \text{(stat)})\times 10^{-38} \text{cm}^2$ $\text{nucleon}^{-1}$ and the cross-section integrated in the region of phase space with largest efficiency and best signal-over-background ratio ($\cosθ_μ>0.6$ and $p_μ> 200$ MeV) is $σ= (0.202 \pm 0.0359 \text{(syst)} \pm 0.0026 \text{(stat)}) \times 10^{-38} \text{cm}^2$ $\text{nucleon}^{-1}$.

Measurement of forward $W\to eν$ production in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8\,$TeV

A measurement of the cross-section for $W \to eν$ production in $pp$ collisions is presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $2\,$fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=8\,$TeV. The electrons are required to have more than $20\,$GeV of transverse momentum and to lie between 2.00 and 4.25 in pseudorapidity. The inclusive $W$ production cross-sections, where the $W$ decays to $eν$, are measured to be \begin{equation*} σ_{W^{+} \to e^{+}ν_{e}}=1124.4\pm 2.1\pm 21.5\pm 11.2\pm 13.0\,\mathrm{pb}, \end{equation*} \begin{equation*} σ_{W^{-} \to e^{-}\barν_{e}}=\,\,\,809.0\pm 1.9\pm 18.1\pm\,\,\,7.0\pm \phantom{0}9.4\,\mathrm{pb}, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, the third are due to the knowledge of the LHC beam energy and the fourth are due to the luminosity determination. Differential cross-sections as a function of the electron pseudorapidity are measured. The $W^{+}/W^{-}$ cross-section ratio and production charge asymmetry are also reported. Results are compared with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Finally, in a precise test of lepton universality, the ratio of $W$ boson branching fractions is determined to be \begin{equation*} \mathcal{B}(W \to eν)/\mathcal{B}(W \to μν)=1.020\pm 0.002\pm 0.019, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of Muon Antineutrino Oscillations with an Accelerator-Produced Off-Axis Beam

T2K reports its first measurements of the parameters governing the disappearance of $\barν_μ$ in an off-axis beam due to flavor change induced by neutrino oscillations. The quasimonochromatic $\barν_μ$ beam, produced with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV at J-PARC, is observed at the far detector Super-Kamiokande, 295 km away, where the $\barν_μ$ survival probability is expected to be minimal. Using a dataset corresponding to $4.01 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target, $34$ fully contained $μ$-like events were observed. The best-fit oscillation parameters are $\sin^2 (\barθ_{23}) = 0.45$ and $|Δ\bar{m}^2_{32}| = 2.51 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ with 68% confidence intervals of 0.38 - 0.64 and 2.26 - 2.80 $\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ respectively. Measurement of the $CP$ asymmetry in $B_s^0-\overline{B}{}_s^0$ mixing

The $CP$ asymmetry in the mixing of $B_s^0$ and $\overline{B}{}_s^0$ mesons is measured in proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$, recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Semileptonic $B_s^0$ and $\overline{B}{}_s^0$ decays are studied in the inclusive mode $D_s^{\mp} μ^{\pm} ν_μ X$ with the $D_s^{\mp}$ mesons reconstructed in the $K^+ K^- π^{\mp}$ final state. Correcting the observed charge asymmetry for detection and background effects, the $CP$ asymmetry is found to be $a_{\text{sl}}^s = (0.39 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.20) \% $, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the most precise measurement of $a_{\text{sl}}^s$ to date. It is consistent with the prediction from the Standard Model and will constrain new models of particle physics.

Measurement of the CKM angle $γ$ from a combination of LHCb results

A combination of measurements sensitive to the CKM angle $γ$ from LHCb is performed. The inputs are from analyses of time-integrated $B^{+}\rightarrow DK^+$, $B^{0} \rightarrow D K^{*0}$, $B^{0} \rightarrow D K^+ π^-$ and $B^{+} \rightarrow D K^+π^+π^-$ tree-level decays. In addition, results from a time-dependent analysis of $B_{s}^{0} \rightarrow D_{s}^{\mp}K^{\pm}$ decays are included. The combination yields $γ= (72.2^{+6.8}_{-7.3})^\circ$, where the uncertainty includes systematic effects. The 95.5% confidence level interval is determined to be $γ\in [55.9,85.2]^\circ$. A second combination is investigated, also including measurements from $B^{+} \rightarrow D π^+$ and $B^{+} \rightarrow D π^+π^-π^+$ decays, which yields compatible results.

Measurement of the CKM angle $γ$ using $B^0 \rightarrow D K^{*0}$ with $D \rightarrow K^0_S π^+ π^-$ decays

A model-dependent amplitude analysis of the decay $B^0\rightarrow D(K^0_Sπ^+π^-) K^{*0}$ is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0fb$^{-1}$, recorded at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8 TeV$ by the LHCb experiment. The CP violation observables $x_{\pm}$ and $y_{\pm}$, sensitive to the CKM angle $γ$, are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} x_- &=& -0.15 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.01, y_- &=& 0.25 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.01, x_+ &=& 0.05 \pm 0.24 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.01, y_+ &=& -0.65^{+0.24}_{-0.23} \pm 0.08 \pm 0.01, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second systematic and the third arise from the uncertainty on the $D\rightarrow K^0_S π^+π^-$ amplitude model. These are the most precise measurements of these observables. They correspond to $γ=(80^{+21}_{-22})^{\circ}$ and $r_{B^0}=0.39\pm0.13$, where $r_{B^0}$ is the magnitude of the ratio of the suppressed and favoured $B^0\rightarrow D K^+ π^-$ decay amplitudes, in a $Kπ$ mass region of $\pm50 MeV$ around the $K^*(892)^0$ mass and for an absolute value of the cosine of the $K^{*0}$ decay angle larger than $0.4$.

Measurement of the difference of time-integrated CP asymmetries in $D^0 \rightarrow K^{-} K^{+} $ and $D^0 \rightarrow π^{-} π^{+} $ decays

A search for CP violation in $D^0 \rightarrow K^{-} K^{+} $ and $D^0 \rightarrow π^{-} π^{+} $ decays is performed using $pp$ collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3~fb^{-1}$, collected using the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and $8~$TeV. The flavour of the charm meson is inferred from the charge of the pion in $D^{*+}\rightarrow D^0π^+$ and $D^{*-}\rightarrow \bar{D^0}π^{-}$ decays. The difference between the CP asymmetries in $D^0 \rightarrow K^{-} K^{+} $ and $D^0 \rightarrow π^{-} π^{+} $ decays, $ΔA_{CP} \equiv A_{CP}(K^{-} K^{+}) - A_{CP}(π^{-} π^{+})$, is measured to be $\left( -0.10 \pm 0.08(stat) \pm 0.03(syst) \right) \%$. This is the most precise measurement of a time-integrated CP asymmetry in the charm sector from a single experiment.

Measurement of the forward Z boson production cross-section in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

A measurement of the production cross-section of Z bosons in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV is presented using dimuon and dielectron final states in LHCb data. The cross-section is measured for leptons with pseudorapidities in the range $2.0 < η< 4.5$, transverse momenta $p_\text{T} > 20$ GeV and dilepton invariant mass in the range $60<m(\ell\ell)<120$ GeV. The integrated cross-section from averaging the two final states is \begin{equation*}σ_{\text{Z}}^{\ell\ell} = 194.3 \pm 0.9 \pm 3.3 \pm 7.6\text{ pb,}\end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is due to systematic effects, and the third is due to the luminosity determination. In addition, differential cross-sections are measured as functions of the Z boson rapidity, transverse momentum and the angular variable $ϕ^*_η$.

Measurement of the mass and lifetime of the $Ω_b^-$ baryon

A proton-proton collision data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$ collected by LHCb at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and 8 TeV, is used to reconstruct $63\pm9$ $Ω_b^-\toΩ_c^0π^-$, $Ω_c^0\to pK^-K^-π^+$ decays. Using the $Ξ_b^-\toΞ_c^0π^-$, $Ξ_c^0\to pK^-K^-π^+$ decay mode for calibration, the lifetime ratio and absolute lifetime of the $Ω_b^-$ baryon are measured to be \begin{align*} \frac{τ_{Ω_b^-}}{τ_{Ξ_b^-}} &= 1.11\pm0.16\pm0.03, \\ τ_{Ω_b^-} &= 1.78\pm0.26\pm0.05\pm0.06~{\rm ps}, \end{align*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the calibration mode (for $τ_{Ω_b^-}$ only). A measurement is also made of the mass difference, $m_{Ω_b^-}-m_{Ξ_b^-}$, and the corresponding $Ω_b^-$ mass, which yields \begin{align*} m_{Ω_b^-}-m_{Ξ_b^-} &= 247.4\pm3.2\pm0.5~{\rm MeV}/c^2, \\ m_{Ω_b^-} &= 6045.1\pm3.2\pm 0.5\pm0.6~{\rm MeV}/c^2. \end{align*} These results are consistent with previous measurements.

We perform a search for near-threshold $Ξ_b^0$ resonances decaying to $Ξ_b^- π^+$ in a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment. We observe one resonant state, with the following properties: \begin{eqnarray*} m(Ξ_b^{*0}) - m(Ξ_b^-) - m(π^+) &=& 15.727 \pm 0.068 \, (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.023 \, (\mathrm{syst}) \, \mathrm{MeV}/c^2, Γ(Ξ_b^{*0}) &=& 0.90 \pm 0.16 \, (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.08 \, (\mathrm{syst}) \, \mathrm{MeV} . \end{eqnarray*} This confirms the previous observation by the CMS collaboration. The state is consistent with the $J^P=3/2^+$ $Ξ_b^{*0}$ resonance expected in the quark model. This is the most precise determination of the mass and the first measurement of the natural width of this state. We have also measured the ratio \begin{align*} \frac{σ(pp \to Ξ_b^{*0} X){\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^{*0} \to Ξ_b^- π^+)}{σ(pp \to Ξ_b^- X)} = 0.28 \pm 0.03 \, (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.01 \, (\mathrm{syst}) . \end{align*}

Measurements of long-range near-side angular correlations in $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5$TeV proton-lead collisions in the forward region

Two-particle angular correlations are studied in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5$TeV, collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on data recorded in two beam configurations, in which either the direction of the proton or that of the lead ion is analysed. The correlations are measured in the laboratory system as a function of relative pseudorapidity, $Δη$, and relative azimuthal angle, $Δϕ$, for events in different classes of event activity and for different bins of particle transverse momentum. In high-activity events a long-range correlation on the near side, $Δϕ\approx 0$, is observed in the pseudorapidity range $2.0<η<4.9$. This measurement of long-range correlations on the near side in proton-lead collisions extends previous observations into the forward region up to $η=4.9$. The correlation increases with growing event activity and is found to be more pronounced in the direction of the lead beam. However, the correlation in the direction of the lead and proton beams are found to be compatible when comparing events with similar absolute activity in the direction analysed.

Model-independent evidence for $J/ψp$ contributions to $Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^-$ decays

The data sample of $Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^-$ decays acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8~TeV $pp$ collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$, is inspected for the presence of $J/ψp$ or $J/ψK^-$ contributions with minimal assumptions about $K^- p$ contributions. It is demonstrated at more than 9 standard deviations that $Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^-$ decays cannot be described with $K^- p$ contributions alone, and that $J/ψp$ contributions play a dominant role in this incompatibility. These model-independent results support the previously obtained model-dependent evidence for $P_c^+\to J/ψp$ charmonium-pentaquark states in the same data sample.

Model-independent measurement of the CKM angle $γ$ using $B^0 \to D K^{\ast 0}$ decays with $D \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ and $K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}$

A binned Dalitz plot analysis of the decays $B^0 \to D K^{\ast 0}$, with $D \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ and $K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}$, is performed to measure the observables $x_\pm$ and $y_\pm$, which are related to the CKM angle $γ$ and the hadronic parameters of the decays. The $D$ decay strong phase variation over the Dalitz plot is taken from measurements performed at the CLEO-c experiment, making the analysis independent of the $D$ decay model. With a sample of proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,\rm{fb}^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment, the values of the $CP$ violation parameters are found to be $x_+ = 0.05 \pm 0.35 \pm 0.02$, $x_-=-0.31\pm 0.20 \pm 0.04$, $y_+=-0.81\pm 0.28\pm 0.06$ and $y_-=0.31\pm 0.21 \pm 0.05$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These observables correspond to values $γ$ = $(71 \pm 20)^\circ$, $r_{B^0} = 0.56\pm 0.17$ and $δ_{B^0} = (204\,^{+21}_{-20})^\circ$. The parameters $r_{B^0}$ and $δ_{B^0}$ are the magnitude ratio and strong phase difference between the suppressed and favoured $B^0$ decay amplitudes, and have been measured in a region of $\pm 50$ MeV/$c^2$ around the $K^{\ast}(892)^{0}$ mass and with the magnitude of the cosine of the $K^{\ast}(892)^{0}$ helicity angle larger than 0.4.

Production of associated $Υ$ and open charm hadrons in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8$TeV via double parton scattering

Associated production of bottomonia and open charm hadrons in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8$TeV is observed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3$fb^{-1}$ accumulated with the LHCb detector. The observation of five combinations, $Υ(1S)D^0$, $Υ(2S)D^0$, $Υ(1S)D^+$, $Υ(2S)D^+$ and $Υ(1S)D^+_{s}$, is reported. Production cross-sections are measured for $Υ(1S)D^0$ and $Υ(1S)D^+$ pairs in the forward region. The measured cross-sections and the differential distributions indicate the dominance of double parton scattering as the main production mechanism. This allows a precise measurement of the effective cross-section for double parton scattering.

Two formulations for the $Kπ$ $S$-wave are used, both of which give a good description of the data. The kinematic region of the measurements is $p_{\rm T}<20~{\rm GeV}/c$ and $2.0<y<4.5$. The measurements use a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb detector in $pp$ collisions at centre-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}=7~{\rm TeV}$ in 2011 and $\sqrt{s}=8~{\rm TeV}$ in 2012. Based on previous LHCb results of the fragmentation fraction ratio, $f_{Λ_B^0}/f_d$, the branching fraction of the decay $Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^-$ is measured to be \begin{equation*} \mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^-)= (3.17\pm0.04\pm0.07\pm0.34^{+0.45}_{-0.28})\times10^{-4}, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, the third is due to the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the decay $\overline{B}^0\rightarrow J/ψ\overline{K}^*(892)^0$, and the fourth is due to the knowledge of $f_{Λ_b^0}/f_d$. The sum of the asymmetries in the production and decay between $Λ_b^0$ and $\overlineΛ_b^0$ is also measured as a function of $p_{\rm T}$ and $y$. The previously published branching fraction of $Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpπ^-$, relative to that of $Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^-$, is updated. The branching fractions of $Λ_b^0\rightarrow P_c^+(\rightarrow J/ψp)K^-$ are determined.

TITUS: the Tokai Intermediate Tank for the Unoscillated Spectrum

The TITUS, Tokai Intermediate Tank for Unoscillated Spectrum, detector, is a proposed Gd-doped Water Cherenkov tank with a magnetised muon range detector downstream. It is located at J-PARC at about 2 km from the neutrino target and it is proposed as a potential near detector for the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment. Assuming a beam power of 1.3 MW and 27.05 x 10^{21} protons-on-target the sensitivity to CP and mixing parameters achieved by Hyper-Kamiokande with TITUS as a near detector is presented. Also, the potential of the detector for cross sections and Standard Model parameter determination, supernova neutrino and dark matter are shown.

$B$ flavour tagging using charm decays at the LHCb experiment

An algorithm is described for tagging the flavour content at production of neutral $B$ mesons in the LHCb experiment. The algorithm exploits the correlation of the flavour of a $B$ meson with the charge of a reconstructed secondary charm hadron from the decay of the other $b$ hadron produced in the proton-proton collision. Charm hadron candidates are identified in a number of fully or partially reconstructed Cabibbo-favoured decay modes. The algorithm is calibrated on the self-tagged decay modes $B^+ \to J/ψ\, K^+$ and $B^0 \to J/ψ\, K^{*0}$ using $3.0\mathrm{\,fb}^{-1}$ of data collected by the LHCb experiment at $pp$ centre-of-mass energies of $7\mathrm{\,TeV}$ and $8\mathrm{\,TeV}$. Its tagging power on these samples of $B \to J/ψ\, X$ decays is $(0.30 \pm 0.01 \pm 0.01) \%$.

A Long Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiment Using J-PARC Neutrino Beam and Hyper-Kamiokande

Hyper-Kamiokande will be a next generation underground water Cherenkov detector with a total (fiducial) mass of 0.99 (0.56) million metric tons, approximately 20 (25) times larger than that of Super-Kamiokande. One of the main goals of Hyper-Kamiokande is the study of $CP$ asymmetry in the lepton sector using accelerator neutrino and anti-neutrino beams. In this document, the physics potential of a long baseline neutrino experiment using the Hyper-Kamiokande detector and a neutrino beam from the J-PARC proton synchrotron is presented. The analysis has been updated from the previous Letter of Intent [K. Abe et al., arXiv:1109.3262 [hep-ex]], based on the experience gained from the ongoing T2K experiment. With a total exposure of 7.5 MW $\times$ 10$^7$ sec integrated proton beam power (corresponding to $1.56\times10^{22}$ protons on target with a 30 GeV proton beam) to a $2.5$-degree off-axis neutrino beam produced by the J-PARC proton synchrotron, it is expected that the $CP$ phase $δ_{CP}$ can be determined to better than 19 degrees for all possible values of $δ_{CP}$, and $CP$ violation can be established with a statistical significance of more than $3\,σ$ ($5\,σ$) for $76%$ ($58%$) of the $δ_{CP}$ parameter space.

A study of $CP$ violation in $B^\mp \rightarrow Dh^\mp$ ($h=K,π$) with the modes $D \rightarrow K^\mp π^\pm π^0$, $D \rightarrow π^+π^-π^0$ and $D \rightarrow K^+K^-π^0$

An analysis of the decays of $B^\mp \rightarrow D K^\mp$ and $B^\mp \rightarrow D π^\mp $ is presented in which the $D$ meson is reconstructed in the three-body final states $K^\mp π^\pm π^0$, $π^+ π^- π^0$ and $K^+ K^- π^0$. Using data from LHCb corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions, measurements of several $CP$ observables are performed. First observations are obtained of the suppressed ADS decay $B^\mp \rightarrow [π^\mp K^\pm π^0]_D π^\mp$ and the quasi-GLW decay $B^\mp \rightarrow [K^+ K^- π^0]_D π^\mp$. The results are interpreted in the context of the unitarity triangle angle $γ$ and related parameters.

Amplitude analysis of $B^0 \rightarrow \bar{D}^0 K^+ π^-$ decays

The Dalitz plot distribution of $B^0 \rightarrow \bar{D}^0 K^+ π^-$ decays is studied using a data sample corresponding to $3.0\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. The data are described by an amplitude model that contains contributions from intermediate $K^*(892)^0$, $K^*(1410)^0$, $K^*_2(1430)^0$ and $D^*_2(2460)^-$ resonances. The model also contains components to describe broad structures, including the $K^*_0(1430)^0$ and $D^*_0(2400)^-$ resonances, in the $Kπ$ S-wave and the $Dπ$ S- and P-waves. The masses and widths of the $D^*_0(2400)^-$ and $D^*_2(2460)^-$ resonances are measured, as are the complex amplitudes and fit fractions for all components included in the amplitude model. The model obtained will be an integral part of a future determination of the angle $γ$ of the CKM quark mixing matrix using $B^0 \rightarrow D K^+ π^-$ decays.

Angular analysis and differential branching fraction of the decay $B^0_s\toϕμ^+μ^-$

Measurements are reported as a function of $q^{2}$, the square of the dimuon invariant mass and results of the angular analysis are found to be consistent with the Standard Model. In the range $1<q^2<6\, {\rm GeV}^{2}/c^{4}$, where precise theoretical calculations are available, the differential branching fraction is found to be more than $3\,σ$ below the Standard Model predictions.

Angular analysis of the $B^0 \rightarrow K^{*0} e^+ e^-$ decay in the low-$q^2$ region

An angular analysis of the $B^0 \rightarrow K^{*0} e^+ e^-$ decay is performed using a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 ${\mbox{fb}^{-1}}$, collected by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV during 2011 and 2012. For the first time several observables are measured in the dielectron mass squared ($q^2$) interval between 0.002 and 1.120${\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V^2\!/}c^4}$. The angular observables $F_{\mathrm{L}}$ and $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Re}}$ which are related to the $K^{*0}$ polarisation and to the lepton forward-backward asymmetry, are measured to be $F_{\mathrm{L}}= 0.16 \pm 0.06 \pm0.03$ and $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Re}} = 0.10 \pm 0.18 \pm 0.05$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The angular observables $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{(2)}$ and $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Im}}$ which are sensitive to the photon polarisation in this $q^2$ range, are found to be $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{(2)} = -0.23 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.05$ and $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Im}} =0.14 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.05$. The results are consistent with Standard Model predictions.

Dalitz plot analysis of $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^-$ decays

The resonant substructures of $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^-$ decays are studied with the Dalitz plot technique. In this study a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions collected by the LHCb detector is used. The branching fraction of the $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^-$ decay in the region $m(\overline{D}^0π^{\pm})>2.1$ GeV$/c^2$ is measured to be $(8.46 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.40) \times 10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the last arises from the normalisation channel $B^0 \to D^*(2010)^-π^+$. The $π^+π^-$ S-wave components are modelled with the Isobar and K-matrix formalisms. Results of the Dalitz plot analyses using both models are presented. A resonant structure at $m(\overline{D}^0π^-) \approx 2.8$ GeV$/c^{2}$ is confirmed and its spin-parity is determined for the first time as $J^P = 3^-$. The branching fraction, mass and width of this structure are determined together with those of the $D^*_0(2400)^-$ and $D^*_2(2460)^-$ resonances. The branching fractions of other $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 h^0$ decay components with $h^0 \to π^+π^-$ are also reported. Many of these branching fraction measurements are the most precise to date. The first observation of the decays $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(500)$, $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(980)$, $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 ρ(1450)$, $B^0 \to D_3^*(2760)^- π^+$ and the first evidence of $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(2020)$ are presented.

Determination of the quark coupling strength $|V_{ub}|$ using baryonic decays

In the Standard Model of particle physics, the strength of the couplings of the $b$ quark to the $u$ and $c$ quarks, $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$, are governed by the coupling of the quarks to the Higgs boson. Using data from the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, the probability for the $Λ^0_b$ baryon to decay into the $p μ^- \overlineν_μ$ final state relative to the $Λ^+_c μ^- \overlineν_μ$ final state is measured. Combined with theoretical calculations of the strong interaction and a previously measured value of $|V_{cb}|$, the first $|V_{ub}|$ measurement to use a baryonic decay is performed. This measurement is consistent with previous determinations of $|V_{ub}|$ using $B$ meson decays to specific final states and confirms the existing incompatibility with those using an inclusive sample of final states.

Evidence for the strangeness-changing weak decay $Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-$

Using a $pp$ collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0~fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb detector, we present the first search for the strangeness-changing weak decay $Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-$. No $b$ hadron decay of this type has been seen before. A signal for this decay, corresponding to a significance of 3.2 standard deviations, is reported. The relative rate is measured to be ${f_{Ξ_b^-}\over{f_{Λ_b^0}}}{\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-) = (5.7\pm1.8^{+0.8}_{-0.9})\times10^{-4}$, where $f_{Ξ_b^-}$ and $f_{Λ_b^0}$ are the $b\toΞ_b^-$ and $b\toΛ_b^0$ fragmentation fractions, and ${\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-)$ is the branching fraction. Assuming $f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0}$ is bounded between 0.1 and 0.3, the branching fraction ${\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-)$ would lie in the range from $(0.57\pm0.21)\%$ to $(0.19\pm0.07)\%$.

First measurement of the differential branching fraction and $C\!P$ asymmetry of the $B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^-$ decay

The differential branching fraction with respect to the dimuon invariant mass squared, and the $C\!P$ asymmetry of the $B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^-$ decay are measured for the first time. The CKM matrix elements $|V_{td}|$ and $|V_{ts}|$, and the ratio $|V_{td}/V_{ts}|$ are determined. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The total branching fraction and $C\!P$ asymmetry of $B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^-$ decays are measured to be \begin{eqnarray} \mathcal{B}(B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^-) &=& (1.83 \pm 0.24 \pm 0.05) \times 10^{-8}\,\,\,\mathrm{and} \nonumber\\ \mathcal{A}_{C\!P}(B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^-) &=& -0.11 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.01\,, \nonumber \end{eqnarray} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The first observation of the $B^0_s \to D_s^{*\mp} K^{\pm}$ decay is reported using 3.0$fb^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment. The $D_s^{*\mp}$ mesons are reconstructed through the decay chain $D_s^{*\mp} \to γD_s^{\mp}(K^{\mp}K^{\pm}π^{\mp})$. Using a recent measurement of $BR(B^0_s \to D_s^{*-} π^{+})$ the absolute branching fraction of $B^0_s \to D_s^{*\mp} K^{\pm}$ is measured as ( 16.3 $\pm$ 1.2 (stat) $^{+0.7}_{-0.5}$ (syst) $\pm$ 4.8 (norm) ) $\times$ 10$^{-5}$, where the third uncertainty is due to the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the normalisation channel.

First observation of top quark production in the forward region

Top quark production in the forward region in proton-proton collisions is observed for the first time. The $W\!+\!b$ final state with $W\toμν$ is reconstructed using muons with a transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, larger than 25 GeV in the pseudorapidity range $2.0<η<4.5$. The $b$ jets are required to have $50 < p_{\rm T} < 100$ GeV and $2.2 < η< 4.2$, while the transverse component of the sum of the muon and $b$-jet momenta must satisfy $p_{\rm T} > 20$ GeV. The results are based on data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.0 and $2.0$ fb$^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV by LHCb. The inclusive top quark production cross-sections in the fiducial region are $σ({\rm top})[7\rm{TeV}] = 239\pm53({\rm stat})\pm33({\rm syst})\pm24({\rm theory})\,{\rm fb}$ and $σ({\rm top})[8\rm{TeV}] = 289\pm43({\rm stat})\pm40({\rm syst})\pm29({\rm theory})\,{\rm fb}$. These results, along with the observed differential yields and charge asymmetries, are in agreement with next-to-leading order Standard Model predictions.

Identification of beauty and charm quark jets at LHCb

Identification of jets originating from beauty and charm quarks is important for measuring Standard Model processes and for searching for new physics. The performance of algorithms developed to select $b$- and $c$-quark jets is measured using data recorded by LHCb from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV in 2011 and at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV in 2012. The efficiency for identifying a $b(c)$ jet is about 65%(25%) with a probability for misidentifying a light-parton jet of 0.3% for jets with transverse momentum $p_{\rm T} > 20$ GeV and pseudorapidity $2.2 < η< 4.2$. The dependence of the performance on the $p_{\rm T}$ and $η$ of the jet is also measured.

LHCb Detector Performance

The LHCb detector is a forward spectrometer at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The experiment is designed for precision measurements of CP violation and rare decays of beauty and charm hadrons. In this paper the performance of the various LHCb sub-detectors and the trigger system are described, using data taken from 2010 to 2012. It is shown that the design criteria of the experiment have been met. The excellent performance of the detector has allowed the LHCb collaboration to publish a wide range of physics results, demonstrating LHCb's unique role, both as a heavy flavour experiment and as a general purpose detector in the forward region.

Measurement of forward $\rm Z\rightarrow e^+e^-$ production at $\sqrt{s}=8$TeV

The acceptance is defined by the requirements $2.0<η<4.5$ and $p_{\rm T}>20$GeV for the pseudorapidities and transverse momenta of the leptons. Their invariant mass is required to lie in the range 60--120GeV. The cross-section is determined to be $$ σ({\rm pp\to Z\to e^+e^-})=93.81\pm0.41({\rm stat})\pm1.48({\rm syst})\pm1.14({\rm lumi})\;{\rm pb}\,,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second reflects all systematic effects apart from that arising from the luminosity, which is given as the third uncertainty. Differential cross-sections are presented as functions of the Z-boson rapidity and of the angular variable $ϕ^*$, which is related to the Z-boson transverse momentum.

Measurement of indirect $CP$ asymmetries in $D^0\rightarrow K^-K^+$ and $D^0\rightarrow π^-π^+$ decays using semileptonic $B$ decays

Time-dependent $CP$ asymmetries in the decay rates of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays $D^0\rightarrow K^-K^+$ and $D^0\rightarrow π^-π^+$ are measured in $pp$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment. The $D^0$ mesons are produced in semileptonic $b$-hadron decays, where the charge of the accompanying muon is used to determine the initial state as $D^0$ or $\bar{D}^0$. The asymmetries in effective lifetimes between $D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0$ decays, which are sensitive to indirect $CP$ violation, are determined to be \begin{align*} A_Γ(K^-K^+) = (-0.134 \pm 0.077 \; {}^{+0.026}_{-0.034})\% \, A_Γ(π^-π^+) = (-0.092\pm 0.145 \; {}^{+0.025}_{-0.033})\% \, \end{align*} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. This result is in agreement with previous measurements and with the hypothesis of no indirect $CP$ violation in $D^0$ decays.

This is the most precise measurement of this branching fraction to date, representing a factor five reduction in the statistical uncertainty compared with the previous best measurement. Measurement of the $ν_μ$ CCQE cross section on carbon with the ND280 detector at T2K

The Charged-Current Quasi-Elastic (CCQE) interaction, $ν_{l} + n \rightarrow l^{-} + p$, is the dominant CC process at $E_ν\sim 1$ GeV and contributes to the signal in accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments operating at intermediate neutrino energies. This paper reports a measurement by the T2K experiment of the $ν_μ$ CCQE cross section on a carbon target with the off-axis detector based on the observed distribution of muon momentum ($p_μ$) and angle with respect to the incident neutrino beam ($θ_μ$). The flux-integrated CCQE cross section was measured to be $(0.83 \pm 0.12) \times 10^{-38}\textrm{ cm}^{2}$ in good agreement with NEUT MC value of ${0.88 \times 10^{-38}} \textrm{ cm}^{2}$. The energy dependence of the CCQE cross section is also reported. The axial mass, $M_A^{QE}$, of the dipole axial form factor was extracted assuming the Smith-Moniz CCQE model with a relativistic Fermi gas nuclear model. Using the absolute (shape-only) $p_μcosθ_μ$ distribution, the effective $M_A^{QE}$ parameter was measured to be ${1.26^{+0.21}_{-0.18} \textrm{ GeV}/c^{2}}$ (${1.43^{+0.28}_{-0.22} \textrm{ GeV}/c^{2}}$).

Using $pp$ collision data collected by LHCb at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$, the ratio of the branching fraction of the $B_c^+ \rightarrow ψ(2S)π^+$ decay relative to that of the $B_c^+ \rightarrow J/ψπ^+$ decay is measured to be 0.268 $\pm$ 0.032 (stat) $\pm$ 0.007 (syst) $\pm$ 0.006 (BF). The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainties on the branching fractions of the $J/ψ\rightarrow μ^+μ^-$ and $ψ(2S) \rightarrow μ^+μ^-$ decays. This measurement is consistent with the previous LHCb result, and the statistical uncertainty is halved.

Measurement of the Electron Neutrino Charged-current Interaction Rate on Water with the T2K ND280 pi-zero Detector

This paper presents a measurement of the charged current interaction rate of the electron neutrino beam component of the beam above $1.5$~GeV using the large fiducial mass of the T2K $π^0$ detector. The predominant poriton of the $ν_e$ flux ($\sim$85 %) at these energies comes from kaon decays. The measured ratio of the observed beam interaction rate to the predicted rate in the detector with water targets filled is 0.89 $\pm$ 0.08 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.11 (sys.), and with the water targets emptied is 0.90 $\pm$ 0.09 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.13 (sys.). The ratio obtained for the interactions on water only from an event subtraction method is 0.87 $\pm$ 0.33 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.21 (sys.). This is the first measurement of the interaction rate of electron neutrinos on water, which is particularly of interest to experiments with water Cherenkov detectors.

Measurement of the exclusive $Υ$ production cross-section in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$7 TeV and 8 TeV

A study is presented of central exclusive production of $Υ(nS)$ states, where the $Υ(nS)$ resonances decay to the $μ^+μ^-$ final state, using $pp$ collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment. The cross-section is measured in the rapidity range $2<y(Υ)<4.5$ where the muons are reconstructed in the pseudorapidity range $2<η(μ^\pm)<4.5$. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 fb$^{-1}$ and was collected at centre-of-mass energies of $7$ TeV and $8$ TeV. The measured $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ production cross-sections are \begin{eqnarray} σ(pp \to pΥ(1S)p) &=& 9.0 \pm 2.1 \pm 1.7\textrm{ pb and}\nonumber\\ σ(pp \to pΥ(2S)p) &=& 1.3 \pm 0.8 \pm 0.3\textrm{ pb},\nonumber \end{eqnarray} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The $Υ(1S)$ cross-section is also measured as a function of rapidity and is found to be in good agreement with Standard Model predictions. An upper limit is set at 3.4 pb at the 95\% confidence level for the exclusive $Υ(3S)$ production cross-section, including possible contamination from $χ_b(3P)\toΥ(3S)γ$ decays.

Measurement of the forward $Z$ boson production cross-section in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV

A measurement of the production cross-section for $Z$ bosons that decay to muons is presented. The data were recorded by the LHCb detector during $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$. The cross-section is measured for muons in the pseudorapidity range $2.0 < η< 4.5$ with transverse momenta $p_{T} > 20$ GeV/c. The dimuon mass is restricted to $60 < M_{μ^{+}μ^{-}} < 120$ GeV/c$^{2}$. The measured cross-section is $$σ_{Z\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}} = (76.0 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.5 \pm 1.0 \pm 1.3) \, \text{pb}$$ where the uncertainties are due to the sample size, systematic effects, the beam energy and the luminosity. This result is in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. The cross-section is also measured differentially as a function of kinematic variables of the $Z$ boson. Ratios of the production cross-sections of electroweak bosons are presented using updated LHCb measurements of $W$ boson production. A precise test of the Standard Model is provided by the measurement of the ratio $$\frac{σ_{W^{+}\rightarrowμ^{+}ν_μ} + σ_{W^{-}\rightarrowμ^{-}\barν_μ}}{σ_{Z\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}}} = 20.63\pm0.09\pm0.12\pm0.05,$$ where the uncertainty due to luminosity cancels.

Measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry in $Z/γ^{\ast} \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decays and determination of the effective weak mixing angle

The forward-backward charge asymmetry for the process $q\bar{q} \rightarrow Z/γ^{\ast} \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-}$ is measured as a function of the invariant mass of the dimuon system. Measurements are performed using proton proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ and 8\tev, corresponding to integrated luminosities of $1$fb$^{-1}$ and $2$fb$^{-1}$ respectively. Within the Standard Model the results constrain the effective electroweak mixing angle to be $$sin^{2}θ_{W}^{eff} = 0.23142 \pm 0.00073 \pm 0.00052 \pm 0.00056 $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third theoretical. This result is in agreement with the current world average, and is one of the most precise determinations at hadron colliders to date.

Measurement of the muon neutrino inclusive charged-current cross section in the energy range of 1-3 GeV with the T2K INGRID detector

We report a measurement of the $ν_μ$-nucleus inclusive charged current cross section (=$σ^{cc}$) on iron using data from exposed to the J-PARC neutrino beam. The detector consists of 14 modules in total, which are spread over a range of off-axis angles from 0$^\circ$ to 1.1$^\circ$. The variation in the neutrino energy spectrum as a function of the off-axis angle, combined with event topology information, is used to calculate this cross section as a function of neutrino energy. The cross section is measured to be $σ^{cc}(1.1\text{ GeV}) = 1.10 \pm 0.15$ $(10^{-38}\text{cm}^2/\text{nucleon})$, $σ^{cc}(2.0\text{ GeV}) = 2.07 \pm 0.27$ $(10^{-38}\text{cm}^2/\text{nucleon})$, and $σ^{cc}(3.3\text{ GeV}) = 2.29 \pm 0.45$ $(10^{-38}\text{cm}^2/\text{nucleon})$, at energies of 1.1, 2.0, and 3.3 GeV, respectively. These results are consistent with the cross section calculated by the neutrino interaction generators currently used by T2K. More importantly, the method described here opens up a new way to determine the energy dependence of neutrino-nucleus cross sections.

Measurement of the semileptonic $CP$ asymmetry in $B^0-\overline{B}{}^0$ mixing

The semileptonic $CP$ asymmetry in $B^0-\overline{B}{}^0$ mixing, $a_{\rm sl}^d$, is measured in proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$, recorded by the LHCb experiment. Semileptonic $B^0$ decays are reconstructed in the inclusive final states $D^-μ^+$ and $D^{*-}μ^+$, where the $D^-$ meson decays into the $K^+π^-π^-$ final state, and the $D^{*-}$ meson into the $\overline{D}{}^0(\rightarrow K^+π^-)π^-$ final state. The asymmetry between the numbers of $D^{(*)-}μ^+$ and $D^{(*)+}μ^-$ decays is measured as a function of the decay time of the $B^0$ mesons. The $CP$ asymmetry is measured to be $a_{\rm sl}^d = (-0.02 \pm 0.19 \pm 0.30)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the most precise measurement of $a_{\rm sl}^d$ to date and is consistent with the prediction from the Standard Model.

Measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetries in $B_s^0\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^0$

The first measurement of decay-time-dependent CP asymmetries in the decay $B_s^0\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^0$ and an updated measurement of the ratio of branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^0)/\mathcal{B}(B_d^0\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^0)$} are presented. The results are obtained using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions recorded with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The results on the CP asymmetries are $A_{ΔΓ}(B_s^0\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^0) = 0.49_{-0.65}^{+0.77}(stat) \pm 0.06(syst)$, $C_{\rm dir}(B_s^0\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^0) = -0.28 \pm 0.41(stat) \pm 0.08(syst)$ and $S_{\rm mix}(B_s^0\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^0) = -0.08 \pm 0.40(stat) \pm 0.08(syst)$. The ratio $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^0)/\mathcal{B}(B_d^0\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^0)$ is measured to be $0.0431 \pm 0.0017(stat) \pm 0.0012(syst) \pm 0.0025(f_s/f_d)$, where the last uncertainty is due to the knowledge of the $B_s^0$ and $B_d^0$ production fractions.

Measurement of the time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry in $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ decays

The time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry in the decay $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ is measured using $3 fb^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The flavour of the $D^0$ meson is determined by use of the decay $D^{*+} \to D^0 π^+$ and its charge conjugate mode. The result is \[ {\cal A}_{CP} = -0.029 \pm 0.052 \pm 0.022, \] where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The result is consistent with Standard Model expectations and improves the uncertainty with respect to the only previous measurement of this quantity by more than a factor of three.

Measurement of the Z+b-jet cross-section in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7{\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}}$ in the forward region

The associated production of a Z boson or an off-shell photon $γ^*$ with a bottom quark in the forward region is studied using proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $7{\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}}$. The Z bosons are reconstructed in the ${\text{Z}/γ^*}\!\rightarrow{μ^{+}μ^{-}}$ final state from muons with a transverse momentum larger than $20{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}$, while two transverse momentum thresholds are considered for jets ($10{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}$ and $20{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}$). Both muons and jets are reconstructed in the pseudorapidity range $2.0 < η< 4.5$. The results are based on data corresponding to $1.0{\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}}$ recorded in 2011 with the LHCb detector. The measurement of the Z+b-jet cross-section is normalized to the Z+jet cross-section. The measured cross-sections are \begin{equation*} σ(\text{$\text{Z}/γ^*(μ^{+}μ^{-})$+b-jet}) = 295 \pm 60~(\text{stat}) \pm 51~(\text{syst}) \pm 10~(\text{lumi}) {\,\mbox{fb}} \end{equation*} for ${p_{\rm T}}$(jet)$>10{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}$, and \begin{equation*} σ(\text{$\text{Z}/γ^*(μ^{+}μ^{-})$+b-jet}) = 128 \pm 36~(\text{stat}) \pm 22~(\text{syst}) \pm 5~(\text{lumi}) {\,\mbox{fb}} \end{equation*} for ${p_{\rm T}}$(jet)$>20{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}$.

Measurements of neutrino oscillation in appearance and disappearance channels by the T2K experiment with 6.6E20 protons on target

We report on measurements of neutrino oscillation using data from the T2K long-baseline neutrino experiment collected between 2010 and 2013. In an analysis of muon neutrino disappearance alone, we find the following estimates and 68% confidence intervals for the two possible mass hierarchies: Normal Hierarchy: $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.514^{+0.055}_{-0.056}$ and $Δm^2_{32}=(2.51\pm0.10)\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$/c$^4$ Inverted Hierarchy: $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.511\pm0.055$ and $Δm^2_{13}=(2.48\pm0.10)\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$/c$^4$ The analysis accounts for multi-nucleon mechanisms in neutrino interactions which were found to introduce negligible bias. We describe our first analyses that combine measurements of muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance to estimate four oscillation parameters and the mass hierarchy. Frequentist and Bayesian intervals are presented for combinations of these parameters, with and without including recent reactor measurements. At 90% confidence level and including reactor measurements, we exclude the region: $δ_{CP}=[0.15,0.83]π$ for normal hierarchy and $δ_{CP}=[-0.08,1.09]π$ for inverted hierarchy. The T2K and reactor data weakly favor the normal hierarchy with a Bayes Factor of 2.2. The most probable values and 68% 1D credible intervals for the other oscillation parameters, when reactor data are included, are: $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.528^{+0.055}_{-0.038}$ and $|Δm^2_{32}|=(2.51\pm0.11)\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$/c$^4$.

Neutrino Oscillation Physics Potential of the T2K Experiment

The observation of the recent electron neutrino appearance in a muon neutrino beam and the high-precision measurement of the mixing angle $θ_{13}$ have led to a re-evaluation of the physics potential of the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Sensitivities are explored for CP violation in neutrinos, non-maximal $\sin^22θ_{23}$, the octant of $θ_{23}$, and the mass hierarchy, in addition to the measurements of $δ_{CP}$, $\sin^2θ_{23}$, and $Δm^2_{32}$, for various combinations of $ν$-mode and \(\barν\)-mode data-taking. With an exposure of $7.8\times10^{21}$~protons-on-target, T2K can achieve 1-$σ$ resolution of 0.050(0.054) on $\sin^2θ_{23}$ and $0.040(0.045)\times10^{-3}~\rm{eV}^2$ on $Δm^2_{32}$ for 100\%(50\%) neutrino beam mode running assuming $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.5$ and $Δm^2_{32} = 2.4\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$. T2K will have sensitivity to the CP-violating phase $δ_{\rm{CP}}$ at 90\% C.L. or better over a significant range. For example, if $\sin^22θ_{23}$ is maximal (i.e $θ_{23}$=$45^\circ$) the range is $-115^\circ<δ_{\rm{CP}}<-60^\circ$ for normal hierarchy and $+50^\circ<δ_{\rm{CP}}<+130^\circ$ for inverted hierarchy. When T2K data is combined with data from the NO$ν$A experiment, the region of oscillation parameter space where there is sensitivity to observe a non-zero $δ_{CP}$ is substantially increased compared to if each experiment is analyzed alone.

Observation of $J/ψp$ resonances consistent with pentaquark states in ${Λ_b^0\to J/ψK^-p}$ decays

Observations of exotic structures in the $J/ψp$ channel, that we refer to as pentaquark-charmonium states, in $Λ_b^0\to J/ψK^- p$ decays are presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3/fb acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8 TeV pp collisions. An amplitude analysis is performed on the three-body final-state that reproduces the two-body mass and angular distributions. To obtain a satisfactory fit of the structures seen in the $J/ψp$ mass spectrum, it is necessary to include two Breit-Wigner amplitudes that each describe a resonant state. The significance of each of these resonances is more than 9 standard deviations. One has a mass of $4380\pm 8\pm 29$ MeV and a width of $205\pm 18\pm 86$ MeV, while the second is narrower, with a mass of $4449.8\pm 1.7\pm 2.5$ MeV and a width of $39\pm 5\pm 19$ MeV. The preferred $J^P$ assignments are of opposite parity, with one state having spin 3/2 and the other 5/2.

More than 600 ${\B^0 \to (π^+π^-)(π^+π^-)}$ signal decays are selected and used to perform an amplitude analysis from which the ${B^0 \to ρ^0 ρ^0}$ decay is observed for the first time with 7.1 standard deviations significance. The ${B^0 \to ρ^0 ρ^0}$ branching fraction, using the ${\B^0 \to ϕK^*(892)^{0}}$ decay as reference, is also reported as ${\BF(B^0 \to ρ^0 ρ^0) = (0.94 \pm 0.17 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.09 ({\rm syst}) \pm 0.06 ({\rm BF})) \times 10^{-6}}$.

The branching fraction relative to the $B^0\rightarrow ψ(2S) K^+ π^-$ decay mode is measured to be \begin{equation} \frac{{\cal B}(\overline{B}^0_s \rightarrow ψ(2S) K^+ π^-)}{{\cal B}(B^0 \rightarrow ψ(2S) K^+ π^-)} = 5.38 \pm 0.36 (stat) \pm 0.22 (syst) \pm 0.31 \, (f_s/f_d) \, \%,\nonumber \end{equation} where $f_s/f_d$ indicates the uncertainty due to the ratio of probabilities for a $b$ quark to hadronise into a $B_s^0$ or $B^0$ meson. Using an amplitude analysis, the fraction of decays proceeding via an intermediate $K^*(892)^0$ meson is measured to be $0.645 \pm 0.049 (stat) \pm 0.049 (syst)$ and its longitudinal polarisation fraction is $0.524 \pm 0.056 (stat) \pm 0.029 (syst)$. Observation of the rare $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay from the combined analysis of CMS and LHCb data

A joint measurement is presented of the branching fractions $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC by the CMS and LHCb experiments. The data samples were collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and in 2012 at 8 TeV. The combined analysis produces the first observation of the $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. Furthermore, evidence for the $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM.

Observation of two new $Ξ_b^-$ baryon resonances

Two structures are observed close to the kinematic threshold in the $Ξ_b^0 π^-$ mass spectrum in a sample of proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment. In the quark model, two baryonic resonances with quark content $bds$ are expected in this mass region: the spin-parity $J^P = \frac{1}{2}^+$ and $J^P=\frac{3}{2}^+$ states, denoted $Ξ_b^{\prime -}$ and $Ξ_b^{*-}$. Interpreting the structures as these resonances, we measure the mass differences and the width of the heavier state to be $m(Ξ_b^{\prime -}) - m(Ξ_b^0) - m(π^{-}) = 3.653 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.006$ MeV$/c^2$, $m(Ξ_b^{*-}) - m(Ξ_b^0) - m(π^{-}) = 23.96 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.06$ MeV$/c^2$, $Γ(Ξ_b^{*-}) = 1.65 \pm 0.31 \pm 0.10$ MeV, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The width of the lighter state is consistent with zero, and we place an upper limit of $Γ(Ξ_b^{\prime -}) < 0.08$ MeV at 95% confidence level. Relative production rates of these states are also reported.

Physics Potential of a Long Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiment Using J-PARC Neutrino Beam and Hyper-Kamiokande

In this paper, the physics potential of a long baseline neutrino experiment using the Hyper-Kamiokande detector and a neutrino beam from the J-PARC proton synchrotron is presented. The analysis uses the framework and systematic uncertainties derived from the ongoing T2K experiment. With a total exposure of 7.5 MW $\times$ 10$^7$ sec integrated proton beam power (corresponding to $1.56\times10^{22}$ protons on target with a 30 GeV proton beam) to a $2.5$-degree off-axis neutrino beam, it is expected that the leptonic $CP$ phase $δ_{CP}$ can be determined to better than 19 degrees for all possible values of $δ_{CP}$, and $CP$ violation can be established with a statistical significance of more than $3\,σ$ ($5\,σ$) for $76\%$ ($58\%$) of the $δ_{CP}$ parameter space. Using both $ν_e$ appearance and $ν_μ$ disappearance data, the expected 1$σ$ uncertainty of $\sin^2θ_{23}$ is 0.015(0.006) for $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.5(0.45)$.

Search for hidden-sector bosons in $B^0 \!\to K^{*0}μ^+μ^-$ decays

A search is presented for hidden-sector bosons, $χ$, produced in the decay ${B^0\!\to K^*(892)^0χ}$, with $K^*(892)^0\!\to K^{+}π^{-}$ and $χ\!\toμ^+μ^-$. The search is performed using $pp$-collision data corresponding to 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. No significant signal is observed in the accessible mass range $214 \leq m(χ) \leq 4350$ MeV, and upper limits are placed on the branching fraction product $\mathcal{B}(B^0\!\to K^*(892)^0χ)\times\mathcal{B}(χ\!\toμ^+μ^-)$ as a function of the mass and lifetime of the $χ$ boson. These limits are of the order of $10^{-9}$ for $χ$ lifetimes less than 100 ps over most of the $m(χ)$ range, and place the most stringent constraints to date on many theories that predict the existence of additional low-mass bosons.

Search for the rare decays $B^{0}\to J/ψγ$ and $B^{0}_{s} \to J/ψγ$

A search for the rare decay of a $B^{0}$ or $B^{0}_{s}$ meson into the final state $J/ψγ$ is performed, using data collected by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$. The observed number of signal candidates is consistent with a background-only hypothesis. Branching fraction values larger than $1.7\times 10^{-6}$ for the $B^{0}\to J/ψγ$ decay mode are excluded at 90% confidence level. For the $B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψγ$ decay mode, branching fraction values larger than $7.4\times 10^{-6}$ are excluded at 90% confidence level, this is the first branching fraction limit for this decay.

Study of $B^{-}\to DK^-π^+π^-$ and $B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^-$ decays and determination of the CKM angle $γ$

We report a study of the suppressed $B^-\to DK^-π^+π^-$ and favored $B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^-$ decays, where the neutral $D$ meson is detected through its decays to the $K^{\mp}π^{\pm}$ and CP-even $K^+K^-$ and $π^+π^-$ final states. The measurement is carried out using a proton-proton collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0~fb$^{-1}$. We observe the first significant signals in the CP-even final states of the $D$ meson for both the suppressed $B^-\to DK^-π^+π^-$ and favored $B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^-$ modes, as well as in the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed $D\to K^+π^-$ final state of the $B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^-$ decay. Evidence for the ADS suppressed decay $B^{-}\to DK^-π^+π^-$, with $D\to K^+π^-$, is also presented. From the observed yields in the $B^-\to DK^-π^+π^-$, $B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^-$ and their charge conjugate decay modes, we measure the value of the weak phase to be $γ=(74^{+20}_{-19})^{\rm o}$. This is one of the most precise single-measurement determinations of $γ$ to date.

Study of $W$ boson production in association with beauty and charm

The associated production of a $W$ boson with a jet originating from either a light parton or heavy-flavor quark is studied in the forward region using proton-proton collisions. The analysis uses data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.0 and $2.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. The $W$ bosons are reconstructed using the $W\toμν$ decay and muons with a transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, larger than 20 GeV in the pseudorapidity range $2.0<η<4.5$. The partons are reconstructed as jets with $p_{\rm T} > 20$ GeV and $2.2 < η< 4.2$. The sum of the muon and jet momenta must satisfy $p_{\rm T} > 20$ GeV. The fraction of $W+$jet events that originate from beauty and charm quarks is measured, along with the charge asymmetries of the $W\!+\!b$ and $W\!+\!c$ production cross-sections. The ratio of the $W+$jet to $Z+$jet production cross-sections is also measured using the $Z\toμμ$ decay. All results are in agreement with Standard Model predictions.

Study of the rare $B_s^0$ and $B^0$ decays into the $π^+π^-μ^+μ^-$ final state

A search for the rare decays $B_s^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-$ and $B^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-$ is performed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Decay candidates with pion pairs that have invariant mass in the range 0.5-1.3 GeV/$c^2$ and with muon pairs that do not originate from a resonance are considered. The first observation of the decay $B_s^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-$ and the first evidence of the decay $B^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-$ are obtained and the branching fractions, restricted to the dipion-mass range considered, are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-)=(8.6\pm 1.5\,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.7\,({\rm syst})\pm 0.7\,({\rm norm}))\times 10^{-8}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-)=(2.11\pm 0.51\,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.15\,({\rm syst})\pm 0.16\,({\rm norm}) )\times 10^{-8}$, where the third uncertainty is due to the branching fraction of the decay $B^0\to J/ψ(\to μ^+μ^-)K^*(890)^0(\to K^+π^-)$, used as a normalisation.

A new study of $^{25}$Mg($α$,n)$^{28}$Si angular distributions at $E_α$ = 3 - 5 MeV

The observation of $^{26}$Al gives us the proof of active nucleosynthesis in the Milky Way. However the identification of the main producers of $^{26}$Al is still a matter of debate. Many sites have been proposed, but our poor knowledge of the nuclear processes involved introduces high uncertainties. In particular, the limited accuracy on the $^{25}$Mg($α$,n)$^{28}$Si reaction cross section has been identified as the main source of nuclear uncertainty in the production of $^{26}$Al in C/Ne explosive burning in massive stars, which has been suggested to be the main source of $^{26}$Al in the Galaxy. We studied this reaction through neutron spectroscopy at the CN Van de Graaff accelerator of the Legnaro National Laboratories. Thanks to this technique we are able to discriminate the ($α$,n) events from possible contamination arising from parasitic reactions. In particular, we measured the neutron angular distributions at 5 different beam energies (between 3 and 5 MeV) in the \ang{17.5}-\ang{106} laboratory system angular range. The presented results disagree with the assumptions introduced in the analysis of a previous experiment.

Experimental study of the microwave emission from electrons in air

We searched for the emission of microwave radiation in the Ku band generated by a 95 keV electron beam in air. We unequivocally detected the radiation, and measured its yield and angular dependence. Both the emitted power and its angular pattern are well described by a model, where microwave photons are generated via bremsstrahlung in the free-electron atomic-nucleus collisions, during the slowdown of the electrons. As a consequence, the radiation is not isotropic but peaked in the forward direction. The emission yield scales proportionally with the number of electrons. This contrasts a previous claim that the yield scales with the number squared, due to coherence. With a Monte Carlo simulation we extrapolate our results to the Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray energy range.

Measurement of the CP-violating phase $β$ in $B^0\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-$ decays and limits on penguin effects

Time-dependent CP violation is measured in the $B^0\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-$ channel for each $π^+π^-$ resonant final state using data collected with an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ in $pp$ collisions using the LHCb detector. The final state with the largest rate, $J/ψρ^0(770)$, is used to measure the CP-violating angle $2β^{\rm eff}$ to be $(41.7\pm 9.6_{-6.3}^{+2.8})^{\circ}$. This result can be used to limit the size of penguin amplitude contributions to CP violation measurements in, for example, $B_s^0\rightarrow J/ψϕ$ decays. Assuming approximate SU(3) flavour symmetry and neglecting higher order diagrams, the shift in the CP-violating phase $ϕ_s$ is limited to be within the interval [$-1.05^\circ$, +$1.18^\circ$] at 95% confidence level. Changes to the limit due to SU(3) symmetry breaking effects are also discussed.

Measurement of the inclusive $ν_μ$ charged current cross section on iron and hydrocarbon in the T2K on-axis neutrino beam

We report a measurement of the $ν_μ$ inclusive charged current cross sections on iron and hydrocarbon in the T2K on-axis neutrino beam. The measured inclusive charged current cross sections on iron and hydrocarbon averaged over the T2K on-axis flux with a mean neutrino energy of 1.51 GeV are $(1.444\pm0.002(stat.)_{-0.157}^{+0.189}(syst.))\times 10^{-38}\mathrm{cm}^2/\mathrm{nucleon}$, and $(1.379\pm0.009(stat.)_{-0.147}^{+0.178}(syst.))\times 10^{-38}\mathrm{cm}^2/\mathrm{nucleon}$, respectively, and their cross section ratio is $1.047\pm0.007(stat.)\pm0.035(syst.)$. These results agree well with the predictions of the neutrino interaction model, and thus we checked the correct treatment of the nuclear effect for iron and hydrocarbon targets in the model within the measurement precisions.

Measurement of the Inclusive Electron Neutrino Charged Current Cross Section on Carbon with the T2K Near Detector

The T2K off-axis near detector, ND280, is used to make the first differential cross-section measurements of electron neutrino charged current interactions at energies ~1 GeV as a function of electron momentum, electron scattering angle and four-momentum transfer of the interaction. The total flux-averaged $ν_e$ charged current cross-section on carbon is measured to be $1.11\pm0.09~(stat)\pm0.18~(syst)\times10^{-38} cm^2/nucleon$. The differential and total cross-section measurements agree with the predictions of two leading neutrino interaction generators, NEUT and GENIE. The NEUT prediction is $1.23\times10^{-38} cm^2/nucleon$ and the GENIE prediction is $1.08\times10^{-38} cm^2/nucleon$. The total $ν_e$ charged current cross-section result is also in agreement with data from the Gargamelle experiment.

Measurement of the inelastic $pp$ cross-section at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV

The cross-section for inelastic proton-proton collisions, with at least one prompt long-lived charged particle of transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}>0.2$ GeV/$c$ in the pseudorapidity range $2.0<η<4.5$, is measured by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV. The cross-section in this kinematic range is determined to be $σ_{\rm inel}^{\rm acc} = 55.0 \pm 2.4$ mb within the spectrometer acceptance with an experimental uncertainty that is dominated by systematic contributions. Measurement of the intrinsic electron neutrino component in the T2K neutrino beam with the ND280 detector

The T2K experiment has reported the first observation of the appearance of electron neutrinos in a muon neutrino beam. The main and irreducible background to the appearance signal comes from the presence in the neutrino beam of a small intrinsic component of electron neutrinos originating from muon and kaon decays. In T2K, this component is expected to represent 1.2% of the total neutrino flux. A measurement of this component using the near detector (ND280), located 280 m from the target, is presented. The charged current interactions of electron neutrinos are selected by combining the particle identification capabilities of both the time projection chambers and electromagnetic calorimeters of ND280. The measured ratio between the observed electron neutrino beam component and the prediction is 1.01+-0.10 providing a direct confirmation of the neutrino fluxes and neutrino cross section modeling used for T2K neutrino oscillation analyses. Electron neutrinos coming from muons and kaons decay are also separately measured, resulting in a ratio with respect to the prediction of 0.68+-0.30 and 1.10+-0.14, respectively.

Measurement of the lifetime of the $B_c^+$ meson using the $B_c^+\rightarrow J/ψπ^+$ decay mode

The difference in total widths between the $B_c^+$ and $B^+$ mesons is measured using 3.0fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the LHCb experiment in 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Through the study of the time evolution of $B_c^+ \rightarrow J/ψπ^+$ and $B^+\rightarrow J/ψK^+$ decays, the width difference is measured to be $$ ΔΓ\equiv Γ_{B_c^+} - Γ_{B^+} = 4.46 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.07mm^{-1}c,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The known lifetime of the $B^+$ meson is used to convert this to a precise measurement of the $B_c^+$ lifetime, $$τ_{B_c^+} = 513.4 \pm 11.0 \pm 5.7fs,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Measurement of the neutrino-oxygen neutral-current interaction cross section by observing nuclear deexcitation $γ$ rays

We report the first measurement of the neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielastic (NCQE) cross section. It is obtained by observing nuclear deexcitation $γ$-rays which follow neutrino-oxygen interactions at the Super-Kamiokande water Cherenkov detector. We use T2K data corresponding to $3.01 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target. By selecting only events during the T2K beam window and with well-reconstructed vertices in the fiducial volume, the large background rate from natural radioactivity is dramatically reduced. We observe 43 events in the $4-30$ MeV reconstructed energy window, compared with an expectation of 51.0, which includes an estimated 16.2 background events. The background is primarily nonquasielastic neutral-current interactions and has only 1.2 events from natural radioactivity. The flux-averaged NCQE cross section we measure is $1.55 \times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$ with a 68\% confidence interval of $(1.22, 2.20) \times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$ at a median neutrino energy of 630 MeV, compared with the theoretical prediction of $2.01 \times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$.

Precise Measurement of the Neutrino Mixing Parameter θ_{23} from Muon Neutrino Disappearance in an Off-axis Beam

New data from the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment produce the most precise measurement of the neutrino mixing parameter theta_{23}. Using an off-axis neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV and a data set corresponding to 6.57 x 10^{20} protons on target, T2K has fit the energy-dependent nu_mu oscillation probability to determine oscillation parameters. Marginalizing over the values of other oscillation parameters yields sin^2 (theta_{23}) = 0.514 +0.055/-0.056 (0.511 +- 0.055), assuming normal (inverted) mass hierarchy. The best-fit mass-squared splitting for normal hierarchy is Delta m^2_{32} = (2.51 +- 0.10) x 10^{-3} eV^2/c^4 (inverted hierarchy: Delta m^2_{13} = (2.48 +- 0.10) x 10^{-3} eV^2/c^4). Adding a model of multinucleon interactions that affect neutrino energy reconstruction is found to produce only small biases in neutrino oscillation parameter extraction at current levels of statistical uncertainty.

Precision luminosity measurements at LHCb

Measuring cross-sections at the LHC requires the luminosity to be determined accurately at each centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$. In this paper results are reported from the luminosity calibrations carried out at the LHC interaction point 8 with the LHCb detector for $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.76, 7 and 8 TeV (proton-proton collisions) and for $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5 TeV (proton-lead collisions). Both the "van der Meer scan" and "beam-gas imaging" luminosity calibration methods were employed. It is observed that the beam density profile cannot always be described by a function that is factorizable in the two transverse coordinates. The introduction of a two-dimensional description of the beams improves significantly the consistency of the results. For proton-proton interactions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV a relative precision of the luminosity calibration of 1.47% is obtained using van der Meer scans and 1.43% using beam-gas imaging, resulting in a combined precision of 1.12%. Applying the calibration to the full data set determines the luminosity with a precision of 1.16%. This represents the most precise luminosity measurement achieved so far at a bunched-beam hadron collider.

Precision measurement of $CP$ violation in $B_s^0 \to J/ψK^+K^-$ decays

The time-dependent $CP$ asymmetry in $B_s^0 \to J/ψK^+K^-$ decays is measured using $pp$ collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0$fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of $7$ and $8$TeV. In a sample of 96 000 $B_s^0 \to J/ψK^+K^-$ decays, the $CP$-violating phase $ϕ_s$ is measured, as well as the decay widths $Γ_{L}$ and $Γ_{H}$ of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the $B_s^0-\bar{B}_s^0$ system. The values obtained are $ϕ_s = -0.058 \pm 0.049 \pm 0.006$ rad, $Γ_s \equiv (Γ_{L}+Γ_{H})/2 = 0.6603 \pm 0.0027 \pm 0.0015$ps$^{-1}$, and$ΔΓ_s \equiv Γ_{L} - Γ_{H} = 0.0805 \pm 0.0091 \pm 0.0032$ps$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements of those quantities to date. A combined analysis with $B_s^{0} \to J/ψπ^+π^-$ decays gives $ϕ_s = -0.010 \pm 0.039 $rad. All measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. For the first time the phase $ϕ_s$ is measured independently for each polarisation state of the $K^+K^- $ system and shows no evidence for polarisation dependence.

Precision measurement of the mass and lifetime of the Xi_b^- baryon

We report on measurements of the mass and lifetime of the Xi_b^- baryon using about 1800 Xi_b^- decays reconstructed in a proton-proton collision data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. The decays are reconstructed in the Xi_b^- --> Xi_c^0 pi^-, Xi_c^0 --> pK-K-pi+ channel and the mass and lifetime are measured using the Lambda_b^0 --> Lambda_c^+ pi- mode as a reference. We measure M(Xi_b^-) - M(Lambda_b^0) = 178.36 +- 0.46 +- 0.16 MeV/c^2 and tau(Xi_b^-)/tau(Lambda_b^0) = 1.089 +- 0.026 +- 0.011, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. These results lead to a factor of two better precision on the Xi_b^- mass and lifetime compared to previous best measurements, and are consistent with theoretical expectations.

Measurement of Neutrino Oscillation Parameters from Muon Neutrino Disappearance with an Off-axis Beam

The T2K collaboration reports a precision measurement of muon neutrino disappearance with an off-axis neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV. Near detector measurements are used to constrain the neutrino flux and cross section parameters. The Super-Kamiokande far detector, which is 295 km downstream of the neutrino production target, collected data corresponding to $3.01 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target. In the absence of neutrino oscillations, $205 \pm 17$ (syst.) events are expected to be detected and only 58 muon neutrino event candidates are observed. A fit to the neutrino rate and energy spectrum assuming three neutrino flavors, normal mass hierarchy and $θ_{23}\leq π/4$ yields a best-fit mixing angle $\sin^2(2θ_{23})=1.000$ and mass splitting $|Δm^2_{32}| =2.44 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$/c$^4$. If $θ_{23}\geq π/4$ is assumed, the best-fit mixing angle changes to $\sin^2(2θ_{23})=0.999$ and the mass splitting remains unchanged.

The EUROnu Project

The EUROnu project has studied three possible options for future, high intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe. The first is a Super Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of pions created by bombarding targets with a 4 MW proton beam from the CERN High Power Superconducting Proton Linac. The far detector for this facility is the 500 kt MEMPHYS water Cherenkov, located in the Fréjus tunnel. The second facility is the Neutrino Factory, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of μ+ and μ- beams in a storage ring. The far detector in this case is a 100 kt Magnetised Iron Neutrino Detector at a baseline of 2000 km. The third option is a Beta Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of beta emitting isotopes, in particular 6He and 18Ne, also stored in a ring. The far detector is also the MEMPHYS detector in the Fréjus tunnel. EUROnu has undertaken conceptual designs of these facilities and studied the performance of the detectors. Based on this, it has determined the physics reach of each facility, in particular for the measurement of CP violation in the lepton sector, and estimated the cost of construction. These have demonstrated that the best facility to build is the Neutrino Factory. However, if a powerful proton driver is constructed for another purpose or if the MEMPHYS detector is built for astroparticle physics, the Super Beam also becomes very attractive.

The NESSiE Concept for Sterile Neutrinos

Neutrino physics is nowadays receiving more and more attention as a possible source of information for the long-standing problem of new physics beyond the Standard Model. The recent measurement of the third mixing angle theta13 in the standard mixing oscillation scenario encourages us to pursue the still missing results on leptonic CP violation and absolute neutrino masses. However, several puzzling measurements exist, which deserve an exhaustive evaluation. The NESSiE Collaboration has been setup to undertake a definitive experiment to clarify the muon disappearance measurements at small L/E, which will be able to put severe constraints to any model with more than the three-standard neutrinos, or even to robustly measure the presence of a new kind of neutrino oscillation for the first time. Within the context of the current CERN project, aimed to revitalize the neutrino field in Europe, we will illustrate the achievements that can be obtained by a double muon-spectrometer system, with emphasis on the search for sterile neutrinos.

The T2K Neutrino Flux Prediction

The Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) experiment studies neutrino oscillations using an off-axis muon neutrino beam with a peak energy of about 0.6 GeV that originates at the J-PARC accelerator facility. Interactions of the neutrinos are observed at near detectors placed at 280 m from the production target and at the far detector -- Super-Kamiokande (SK) -- located 295 km away. The flux prediction is an essential part of the successful prediction of neutrino interaction rates at the T2K detectors and is an important input to T2K neutrino oscillation and cross section measurements. A FLUKA and GEANT3 based simulation models the physical processes involved in the neutrino production, from the interaction of primary beam protons in the T2K target, to the decay of hadrons and muons that produce neutrinos. The simulation uses proton beam monitor measurements as inputs. The modeling of hadronic interactions is re-weighted using thin target hadron production data, including recent charged pion and kaon measurements from the NA61/SHINE experiment. For the first T2K analyses the uncertainties on the flux prediction are evaluated to be below 15% near the flux peak. The uncertainty on the ratio of the flux predictions at the far and near detectors is less than 2% near the flux peak.

First Muon-Neutrino Disappearance Study with an Off-Axis Beam

We report a measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in the T2K experiment. The 295-km muon-neutrino beam from Tokai to Kamioka is the first implementation of the off-axis technique in a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. With data corresponding to 1.43 10**20 protons on target, we observe 31 fully-contained single muon-like ring events in Super-Kamiokande, compared with an expectation of 104 +- 14 (syst) events without neutrino oscillations. The best-fit point for two-flavor nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations is sin**2(2 theta_23) = 0.98 and |Δm**2_32| = 2.65 10**-3 eV**2. The boundary of the 90 % confidence region includes the points (sin**2(2 theta_23),|Δm**2_32|) = (1.0, 3.1 10**-3 eV**2), (0.84, 2.65 10**-3 eV**2) and (1.0, 2.2 10**-3 eV**2).

Search for "anomalies" from neutrino and anti-neutrino oscillations at Delta_m^2 ~ 1eV^2 with muon spectrometers and large LAr-TPC imaging detectors

This proposal describes an experimental search for sterile neutrinos beyond the Standard Model with a new CERN-SPS neutrino beam. The experiment is based on two identical LAr-TPC's followed by magnetized spectrometers, observing the electron and muon neutrino events at 1600 and 300 m from the proton target. This project will exploit the ICARUS T600, moved from LNGS to the CERN "Far" position. An additional 1/4 of the T600 detector will be constructed and located in the "Near" position. Two spectrometers will be placed downstream of the two LAr-TPC detectors to greatly complement the physics capabilities. Spectrometers will exploit a classical dipole magnetic field with iron slabs, and a new concept air-magnet, to perform charge identification and muon momentum measurements in a wide energy range over a large transverse area. In the two positions, the radial and energy spectra of the nu_e beam are practically identical. Comparing the two detectors, in absence of oscillations, all cross sections and experimental biases cancel out, and the two experimentally observed event distributions must be identical. Any difference of the event distributions at the locations of the two detectors might be attributed to the possible existence of ν-oscillations, presumably due to additional neutrinos with a mixing angle sin^2(2theta_new) and a larger mass difference Delta_m^2_new. The superior quality of the LAr imaging TPC, in particular its unique electron-pi_zero discrimination allows full rejection of backgrounds and offers a lossless nu_e detection capability. The determination of the muon charge with the spectrometers allows the full separation of nu_mu from anti-nu_mu and therefore controlling systematics from muon mis-identification largely at high momenta.

Search for anomalies in the neutrino sector with muon spectrometers and large LArTPC imaging detectors at CERN

A new experiment with an intense ~2 GeV neutrino beam at CERN SPS is proposed in order to definitely clarify the possible existence of additional neutrino states, as pointed out by neutrino calibration source experiments, reactor and accelerator experiments and measure the corresponding oscillation parameters. The experiment is based on two identical LAr-TPCs complemented by magnetized spectrometers detecting electron and muon neutrino events at Far and Near positions, 1600 m and 300 m from the proton target, respectively. The ICARUS T600 detector, the largest LAr-TPC ever built with a size of about 600 ton of imaging mass, now running in the LNGS underground laboratory, will be moved at the CERN Far position. An additional 1/4 of the T600 detector (T150) will be constructed and located in the Near position. Two large area spectrometers will be placed downstream of the two LAr-TPC detectors to perform charge identification and muon momentum measurements from sub-GeV to several GeV energy range, greatly complementing the physics capabilities. This experiment will offer remarkable discovery potentialities, collecting a very large number of unbiased events both in the neutrino and antineutrino channels, largely adequate to definitely settle the origin of the observed neutrino-related anomalies.

Indication of Electron Neutrino Appearance from an Accelerator-produced Off-axis Muon Neutrino Beam

The T2K experiment observes indications of $ν_μ\rightarrow ν_e$ appearance in data accumulated with $1.43\times10^{20}$ protons on target. Six events pass all selection criteria at the far detector. In a three-flavor neutrino oscillation scenario with $|Δm_{23}^2|=2.4\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$, $\sin^2 2θ_{23}=1$ and $\sin^2 2θ_{13}=0$, the expected number of such events is 1.5$\pm$0.3(syst.). Under this hypothesis, the probability to observe six or more candidate events is 7$\times10^{-3}$, equivalent to 2.5$σ$ significance. At 90% C.L., the data are consistent with 0.03(0.04)$<\sin^2 2θ_{13}<$ 0.28(0.34) for $δ_{\rm CP}=0$ and a normal (inverted) hierarchy.

Measurements of the T2K neutrino beam properties using the INGRID on-axis near detector

Precise measurement of neutrino beam direction and intensity was achieved based on a new concept with modularized neutrino detectors. INGRID (Interactive Neutrino GRID) is an on-axis near detector for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. INGRID consists of 16 identical modules arranged in horizontal and vertical arrays around the beam center. The module has a sandwich structure of iron target plates and scintillator trackers. INGRID directly monitors the muon neutrino beam profile center and intensity using the number of observed neutrino events in each module. The neutrino beam direction is measured with accuracy better than 0.4 mrad from the measured profile center. The normalized event rate is measured with 4% precision.

Prospect for Charge Current Neutrino Interactions Measurements at the CERN-PS

Tensions in several phenomenological models grew with experimental results on neutrino/antineutrino oscillations at Short-Baseline (SBL) and with the recent, carefully recomputed, antineutrino fluxes from nuclear reactors. At a refurbished SBL CERN-PS facility an experiment aimed to address the open issues has been proposed [1], based on the technology of imaging in ultra-pure cryogenic Liquid Argon (LAr). Motivated by this scenario a detailed study of the physics case was performed. We tackled specific physics models and we optimized the neutrino beam through a full simulation. Experimental aspects not fully covered by the LAr detection, i.e. the measurements of the lepton charge on event-by-event basis and their energy over a wide range, were also investigated. Indeed the muon leptons from Charged Current (CC) (anti-)neutrino interactions play an important role in disentangling different phenomenological scenarios provided their charge state is determined. Also, the study of muon appearance/disappearance can benefit of the large statistics of CC muon events from the primary neutrino beam. Results of our study are reported in detail in this proposal. We aim to design, construct and install two Spectrometers at "NEAR" and "FAR" sites of the SBL CERN-PS, compatible with the already proposed LAr detectors. Profiting of the large mass of the two Spectrometers their stand-alone performances have also been exploited.

Empirical parameterization of the K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decay Dalitz plot

As first observed by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS, the $\p0p0$ invariant mass (M00) distribution from $\kcnn$ decay shows a cusp-like anomaly at M00=2m+, where m+ is the charged pion mass. An analysis to extract the pi pi scattering lengths in the isospin I=0 and I=2 states, a0 and a2, respectively, has been recently reported. In the present work the Dalitz plot of this decay is fitted to a new empirical parameterization suitable for practical purposes, such as Monte Carlo simulations of K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decays.
