Magneto-optical evidence of double exchange in a percolating lattice

Substituting $Eu$ by $Ca$ in ferromagnetic $EuB_6$ leads to a percolation limited magnetic ordering. We present and discuss magneto-optical data of the $Eu_{1-x}Ca_{x}B_6$ series, based on measurements of the reflectivity $R(ω)$ from the far infrared up to the ultraviolet, as a function of temperature and magnetic field. Via the Kramers-Kronig transformation of $R(ω)$ we extract the complete absorption spectra of samples with different values of $x$. The change of the spectral weight in the Drude component by increasing the magnetic field agrees with a scenario based on the double exchange model, and suggests a crossover from a ferromagnetic metal to a ferromagnetic Anderson insulator upon increasing $Ca$-content at low temperatures.

Optical evidence for a magnetically driven structural transition in the spin web $Cu_3TeO_6$

$Cu_3TeO_6$ is a modest frustrated $S=1/2$ spin system, which undergoes an anti-ferromagnetic transition at $T_N\sim61$ $K$. The anti-ferromagnetic spin alignment in $Cu_3TeO_6$ below $T_N$ is supposed to induce a magneto-elastic strain of the lattice. The complete absorption spectrum of $Cu_3TeO_6$ is obtained through Kramers-Kronig transformation of the optical reflectivity, measured from the far-infrared up to the ultraviolet spectral range as a function of temperature ($T$). Below $T^*\sim 50$ $K$, we find a new mode at 208 $cm^{-1}$. The spectral weight associated to this additional mode increases as $\propto (T^*-T)^{1/2}$ with decreasing $T$ below $T^*$. The implication of the optical findings will be discussed in relation to the magnetic phase transition at $T_N$.

Optical evidence for the proximity to a spin-density-wave metallic state in Na$_{0.7}$CoO$_2$

We present the optical properties of \na single crystals, measured over a broad spectral range as a function of temperature ($T$). The capability to cover the energy range from the far-infrared up to the ultraviolet allows us to perform reliable Kramers-Kronig transformation, in order to obtain the absorption spectrum (i.e., the complex optical conductivity). To the complex optical conductivity we apply the generalized Drude model, extracting the frequency dependence of the scattering rate ($Γ$) and effective mass ($m^*$) of the itinerant charge carriers. We find that $Γ(ω)\sim ω$ at low temperatures and for $ω> T$. This suggests that \na is at the verge of a spin-density-wave metallic phase.

Giant phonon anomalies in the pseudo-gap phase of TiOCl

We report infrared and Raman spectroscopy results of the spin-1/2 quantum magnet TiOCl. Giant anomalies are found in the temperature dependence of the phonon spectrum, which hint to unusual coupling of the electronic degrees of freedom to the lattice. These anomalies develop over a broad temperature interval, suggesting the presence of an extended fluctuation regime. This defines a pseudo-gap phase, characterized by a local spin-gap. Below 100 K a dimensionality cross-over leads to a dimerized ground state with a global spin-gap of about 2$Δ_{spin}\approx$~430 K.

Magneto-optical Kerr effect in $Eu_{1-x}Ca_{x}B_{6}$

We have measured the magneto-optical Kerr rotation of ferromagnetic $Eu_{1-x}Ca_{x}B_{6}$ with x=0.2 and 0.4, as well as of $YbB_{6}$ serving as the non-magnetic reference material. As previously for $EuB_{6}$, we could identify a feature at 1 $eV$ in the Kerr response which is related with electronic transitions involving the localized 4f electron states. The absence of this feature in the data for $YbB_{6}$ confirms the relevance of the partially occupied 4f states in shaping the magneto-optical features of $Eu$-based hexaborides. Disorder by $Ca$-doping broadens the itinerant charge carrier contribution to the magneto-optical spectra.
