Decays of the Heavy Top and New Insights on $ε_K$ in a one-VLQ Minimal Solution to the CKM Unitarity Problem

We propose a minimal extension of the Standard Model where an up-type vector-like quark, denoted $T$, is introduced and provides a simple solution to the CKM unitarity problem. We adopt the Botella-Chau parametrization in order to extract the $4\times 3$ quark mixing matrix which contains the three angles of the $3\times 3$ CKM matrix plus three new angles denoted $θ_{14}$, $θ_{24}$, $θ_{34}$. It is assumed that the mixing of $T$ with standard quarks is dominated by $θ_{14}$. Imposing a recently derived, and much more restrictive, upper-bound on the New Physics contributions to $ε_{K}$, we find, in the limit of exact $θ_{14}$ dominance where the other extra angles vanish, that $ε_{K}^{\text{NP}}$ is too large. However, if one relaxes the exact $θ_{14}$ dominance limit, there exists a parameter region, where one may obtain $ε_{K}^{\text{NP}}$ in agreement with experiment while maintaining the novel pattern of $T$ decays with the heavy quark decaying predominantly to the light quarks $d$ and $u$. We also find a reduction in the decay rate of $K_L\rightarrow π^o ν\barν$.

Type-I Seesaw with eV-Scale Neutrinos

We consider seesaw type-I models including at least one (mostly-)sterile neutrino with mass at the eV scale. Three distinct situations are found, where the presence of light extra neutrinos is naturally justified by an approximately conserved lepton number symmetry. To analyse these scenarios consistently, it is crucial to employ an exact parametrisation of the full mixing matrix. We provide additional exact results, including generalised versions of the seesaw relation and of the Casas-Ibarra parametrisation, valid for every scale of seesaw. We find that the existence of a light sterile neutrino imposes an upper bound on the lightest neutrino mass. We further assess the impact of light sterile states on short- and long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, emphasise future detection prospects, and address CP Violation in this framework via the analysis of CP asymmetries and construction of weak basis invariants. The proposed models can accommodate enough active-sterile mixing to play a role in the explanation of short-baseline anomalies.

Flavour Changing Higgs Couplings in a Class of Two Higgs Doublet Models

We analyse various flavour changing processes like $t\to hu,hc$, $h\to τe,τμ$ as well as hadronic decays $h\to bs,bd$, in the framework of a class of two Higgs doublet models where there are flavour changing neutral scalar currents at tree level. These models have the remarkable feature of having these flavour-violating couplings entirely determined by the CKM and PMNS matrices as well as $\tanβ$. The flavour structure of these scalar currents results from a symmetry of the Lagrangian and therefore it is natural and stable under the renormalization group. We show that in some of the models the rates of the above flavour changing processes can reach the discovery level at the LHC at 13 TeV even taking into account the stringent bounds on low energy processes, in particular $μ\to eγ$.

What if the Masses of the First Two Quark Families are not Generated by the Standard Higgs?

We point out that, in the context of the SM, $|V^2_{13}| + | V^2_{23}|$ is expected to be large, of order one. The fact that $|V^2_{13}| + |V^2_{23}| \approx 1.6 \times 10^{-3}$ motivates the introduction of a symmetry S which leads to $V_{CKM} ={1\>\!\!\!\mathrm{I}} $, with only the third generation of quarks acquiring mass. We consider two scenarios for generating the mass of the first two quark generations and full quark mixing. One consists of the introduction of a second Higgs doublet which is neutral under S. The second scenario consists of assuming New Physics at a high energy scale , contributing to the masses of light quark generations, in an effective field theory approach. This last scenario leads to couplings of the Higgs particle to $s\overline s$ and $c \overline c$ which are significantly enhanced with respect to those of the SM. In both schemes, one has scalar-mediated flavour- changing neutral currents which are naturally suppressed. Flavour violating top decays are predicted in the second scenario at the level $ \mbox{Br} (t \rightarrow h c ) \geq 5\times 10^{-5}$.

Group-theoretic restrictions on generation of CP-violation in multi-Higgs-doublet models

It has been known since decades that imposing a symmetry group G on the scalar sector of multi-Higgs-doublet models has consequences for CP-violation. In all examples of two- and three-Higgs-doublet models equipped with symmetries, one observes the following intriguing property: if G prevents explicit CP-violation (CPV), at least in the neutral Higgs sector, then it also prevents spontaneous CPV, and if G allows explicit CPV, then it allows for spontaneous CPV. One is led to conjecture that this is a general phenomenon. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for any rephasing symmetry group G and any number of doublets.

Natural Quasi-Alignment with two Higgs Doublets and RGE Stability

In the context of two Higgs doublet models, we study the conditions required in order to have stable quasi-alignment in flavour space. We show that stability under the RGE imposes strong constraints on the flavour structure of the Yukawa couplings associated to each one of the Higgs doublets. In particular, we find a novel solution, where all Yukawa couplings are proportional to the so-called democratic matrix. This solution is rather unique, since it is the only stable solution which is a good starting point for reproducing the observed pattern of quark masses and mixing. We also show that this stable solution can be obtained by imposing on the Lagrangian a $Z_3 \times Z^\prime_3$ flavour symmetry. Quark masses of the lighter quark generations are generated through the breaking of this discrete symmetry, and, at this stage, scalar mediated FCNC arise, but are naturally suppressed by the smallness of light quark masses. In this way, we relate Higgs alignment to the hierarchy of quark masses through a discrete family symmetry.

Quasidegeneracy of Majorana Neutrinos and the Origin of Large Leptonic Mixing

We propose that the observed large leptonic mixing may just reflect a quasidegeneracy of three Majorana neutrinos. The limit of exact degeneracy of Majorana neutrinos is not trivial, as leptonic mixing and even CP violation may occur. We conjecture that the smallness of $|U_{13}|$, when compared to the other elements of $U_{PMNS}$, may just reflect the fact that, in the limit of exact mass degeneracy, the leptonic mixing matrix necessarily has a vanishing element. We show that the lifting of the mass degeneracy can lead to the measured value of $|U_{13}|$ while at the same time accommodating the observed solar and atmospheric mixing angles. In the scenario we consider for the breaking of the mass degeneracy there is only one CP violating phase, already present in the limit of exact degeneracy, which upon the lifting of the degeneracy generates both Majorana and Dirac-type CP violation in the leptonic sector. We analyse some of the correlations among physical observables and point out that in most of the cases considered, the implied strength of leptonic Dirac-type CP violation is large enough to be detected in the next round of experiments.

Mixing asymmetries in B meson systems, the D0 like-sign dimuon asymmetry and generic New Physics

The measurement of a large like-sign dimuon asymmetry $A^b_{SL}$ by the D0 experiment at the Tevatron departs noticeably from Standard Model expectations and it may be interpreted as a hint of physics beyond the Standard Model contributing to $ΔB\neq 0$ transitions. In this work we analyse how the natural suppression of $A^b_{SL}$ in the SM can be circumvented by New Physics. We consider generic Standard Model extensions where the charged current mixing matrix is enlarged with respect to the usual $3\times 3$ unitary Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, and show how, within this framework, a significant enhancement over Standard Model expectations for $A^b_{SL}$ is easily reachable through enhancements of the semileptonic asymmetries $A^d_{SL}$ and $A^s_{SL}$ of both $B^0_d$ - $\bar B^0_d$ and $B^0_s$ - $\bar B^0_s$ systems. Despite being insufficient to reproduce the D0 measurement, such deviations from SM expectations may be probed by the LHCb experiment.

Physical Constraints on a Class of Two-Higgs Doublet Models with FCNC at tree level

We analyse the constraints and some of the phenomenological implications of a class of two Higgs doublet models where there are flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNC) at tree level but the potentially dangerous FCNC couplings are suppressed by small entries of the CKM matrix $V$. This class of models have the remarkable feature that, as a result of a discrete symmetry of the Lagrangian, the FCNC couplings are entirely fixed in the quark sector by $V$ and the ratio $v_2 /v_1$ of the vevs of the neutral Higgs. The discrete symmetry is extended to the leptonic sector, so that there are FCNC in the leptonic sector with their flavour structure fixed by the leptonic mixing matrix. We analyse a large number of processes, including decays mediated by charged Higgs at tree level, processes involving FCNC at tree level, as well as loop induced processes. We show that in this class of models one has new physical scalars beyond the standard Higgs boson, with masses reachable at the next round of experiments.

New Physics in the Flavour Sector in the presence of Flavour Changing Neutral Currents

Flavour-Changing-Neutral-Currents (FCNC) play an important r\^ ole in testing the Standard Model (SM) while probing the possibility of having New Physics beyond the SM. In the SM, FCNC are forbidden at three level, but arise through calculable one-loop contributions. We review some of the features of FCNC in two examples of minimal extensions of the SM. In the first example, we consider an extension of the SM consisting of the addition of one vector-like quark either of the up-type ($Q=2/3$) or the down type ($Q=- 1/3$). In this extension there are non-vanishing but naturally suppressed Z-mediated FCNC at tree level. In the second example, we discuss extensions of the SM with two Higgs doublets, without the assumption of natural flavour conservation, giving rise to Higgs mediated FCNC. The existence of strict experimental limits on processes sensitive to Higgs FCNC requires a strong suppression of these currents. We present scenarios resulting from discrete symmetries where all new flavour structures in the quark sector are parametrized by elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, together with the ratio of vacuum expectation values of the Higgs doublets in the Higgs basis defined by the symmetry. We extend these scenarios to the leptonic sector with the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix playing a r\^ ole similar to the CKM matrix in the quark sector.

Universal Democracy Instead of Anarchy

We propose for the flavour structure of both the quark and lepton sectors, the principle of Universal Democracy (UD), which reflects the presence of a $Z_3$ symmetry. In the quark sector, we emphasize the importance of UD for obtaining small mixing and flavour alignment, while in the lepton sector, large mixing, including the recently measured value of $U_{e3}$, is obtained in the UD framework through the seesaw mechanism. An interesting correlation between the values of $U_{e3}$ and $\sin^2(θ_{23})$ is pointed out, with the prediction of $\sin^2(θ_{23})\approx 0.42$ in the region where $U_{e3}$ is in agreement with the DAYA-BAY experiment.

Universality of Strength of Yukawa Couplings, Quark Singlets and Strength of CP Violation

We analyse the strength of CP violation in an extension of the standard model with an extra $Q=-1/3$ vector-like singlet quark, in the framework of the hypothesis of universality of strength of Yukawa couplings connecting standard quarks. We show that the correct pattern of quark masses and mixing can be obtained, including the observed strength of CP violation.

Invariants and Flavour in the General Two-Higgs Doublet Model

The flavour structure of the general Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) is analysed and a detailed study of the parameter space is presented, showing that flavour mixing in the 2HDM can be parametrized by various unitary matrices which arise from the misalignment in flavour space between pairs of various Hermitian flavour matrices which can be constructed within the model. This is entirely analogous to the generation of the CKM matrix in the Standard Model (SM). We construct weak basis invariants which can give insight into the physical implications of any flavour model, written in an arbitrary weak basis (WB) in the context of 2HDM. We apply this technique to two special cases, models with MFV and models with NNI structures. In both cases non-trivial CP-odd WB invariants arise in a mass power order much smaller than what one encounters in the SM, which can have important implications for baryogenesis in the framework of the general 2HDM.

Leptonic CP violation

Several topics on CP violation in the lepton sector are reviewed. A few theoretical aspects concerning neutrino masses, leptonic mixing, and CP violation will be covered, with special emphasis on seesaw models. A discussion is provided on observable effects which are manifest in the presence of CP violation, particularly, in neutrino oscillations and neutrinoless double beta decay processes, and their possible implications in collider experiments such as the LHC. The role that leptonic CP violation may have played in the generation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe through the mechanism of leptogenesis is also discussed.

Spontaneous leptonic CP violation and nonzero $θ_{13}$

We consider a simple extension of the Standard Model by adding two Higgs triplets and a complex scalar singlet to its particle content. In this framework, the CP symmetry is spontaneously broken at high energies by the complex vacuum expectation value of the scalar singlet. Such a breaking leads to leptonic CP violation at low energies. The model also exhibits an $A_4\times Z_4$ flavour symmetry which, after being spontaneously broken at a high-energy scale, yields a tribimaximal pattern in the lepton sector. We consider small perturbations around the tribimaximal vacuum alignment condition in order to generate nonzero values of $θ_{13}$, as required by the latest neutrino oscillation data. It is shown that the value of $θ_{13}$ recently measured by the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment can be accommodated in our framework together with large Dirac-type CP violation. We also address the viability of leptogenesis in our model through the out-of-equilibrium decays of the Higgs triplets. In particular, the CP asymmetries in the triplet decays into two leptons are computed and it is shown that the effective leptogenesis and low-energy CP-violating phases are directly linked.

The Hunt for New Physics in the Flavour Sector with up vector-like quarks

We analyse the possible presence of New Physics (NP) in the Flavour Sector and evaluate its potential for solving the tension between the experimental values of $\AJPKs$ and $\BTNu$ with respect to the Standard Model (SM) expectations. Updated model independent analyses, where NP contributions are allowed in Bd - anti-Bd and Bs - anti-Bs transitions, suggest the need of New Physics in the $bd$ sector. A detailed analysis of recent Flavour data is then presented in the framework of a simple extension of the SM, where a $Q=2/3$ vector-like isosinglet quark is added to the spectrum of the SM. Special emphasis is given to the implications of this model for correlations among various measurable quantities. We include constraints from all the relevant quark flavour sectors and give precise predictions for selected rare processes. We find important deviations from the SM in observables in the $bd$ sector like the semileptonic asymmetry $\asld$, $B_{d}^{0}\to μ^{+}μ^{-}$ and $A^s_{SL}-A^d_{SL}$. Other potential places where NP can show up include $A_{J/ΨΦ}$, $γ$, $K_{L}^{0}\to π^{0}ν\barν$, $t\to Zq$ and $D^{0}\to μ^{+}μ^{-}$ among others. The experimental data favours in this model the existence of an up vector-like quark with a mass below $600(1000)$ GeV at $1(2)$ $σ$.

Invariants, Alignment and the Pattern of Fermion Masses and Mixing

We show that the main features of the pattern of fermion masses and mixing can be expressed in terms of simple relations among weak-basis invariants. In the quark sector, we identify the weak-basis invariants which signal the observed alignment of the up and down quark mass matrices in flavour space. In the lepton sector, we indicate how a set of conditions on weak-basis invariants can lead to an approximate tribimaximal lepton mixing matrix. We also show the usefulness of these invariants in the study of specific ansätze for the flavour structure of fermion mass matrices.

Theory and phenomenology of two-Higgs-doublet models

We discuss theoretical and phenomenological aspects of two-Higgs-doublet extensions of the Standard Model. In general, these extensions have scalar mediated flavour changing neutral currents which are strongly constrained by experiment. Various strategies are discussed to control these flavour changing scalar currents and their phenomenological consequences are analysed. In particular, scenarios with natural flavour conservation are investigated, including the so-called type I and type II models as well as lepton-specific and inert models. Type III models are then discussed, where scalar flavour changing neutral currents are present at tree level, but are suppressed by either specific ansatze for the Yukawa couplings or by the introduction of family symmetries. We also consider the phenomenology of charged scalars in these models. Next we turn to the role of symmetries in the scalar sector. We discuss the six symmetry-constrained scalar potentials and their extension into the fermion sector. The vacuum structure of the scalar potential is analysed, including a study of the vacuum stability conditions on the potential and its renormalization-group improvement. The stability of the tree level minimum of the scalar potential in connection with electric charge conservation and its behaviour under CP is analysed. The question of CP violation is addressed in detail, including the cases of explicit CP violation and spontaneous CP violation. We present a detailed study of weak basis invariants which are odd under CP. A careful study of spontaneous CP violation is presented, including an analysis of the conditions which have to be satisfied in order for a vacuum to violate CP. We present minimal models of CP violation where the vacuum phase is sufficient to generate a complex CKM matrix, which is at present a requirement for any realistic model of spontaneous CP violation.

Two-Higgs Leptonic Minimal Flavour Violation

We construct extensions of the Standard Model with two Higgs doublets, where there are flavour changing neutral currents both in the quark and leptonic sectors, with their strength fixed by the fermion mixing matrices $V_{CKM}$ and $V_{PMNS}$. These models are an extension to the leptonic sector of the class of models previously considered by Branco, Grimus and Lavoura, for the quark sector. We consider both the cases of Dirac and Majorana neutrinos and identify the minimal discrete symmetry required in order to implement the models in a natural way.

Nearest-Neighbour Interaction from an Abelian Symmetry and Deviations from Hermiticity

We show that Nearest-Neighbour Interaction (NNI) textures for the quark mass matrices can be obtained through the introduction of an Abelian flavour symmetry. The minimal realisation requires a Z_4 symmetry in the context of a two Higgs doublet model. It is further shown that the NNI textures can be in agreement with all present experimental data on quark masses and mixings, provided one allows for deviations of Hermiticity in the quark mass matrices at the 20% level.

Spontaneous CP Violation in a SUSY Model with a complex CKM

It is pointed out that the recent measurement of the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle, providing irrefutable evidence for a complex Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, presents a great challenge for supersymmetric models with spontaneous CP violation. We construct a new minimal extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), with spontaneous CP breaking, which leads to a complex CKM matrix, thus conforming to present experimental data. This is achieved through the introduction of two singlet chiral superfields and a vector-like quark chiral superfield which mixes with the standard quarks. A $Z_3$ symmetry is introduced in order to have a potential solution to the strong CP problem.

New Physics and Evidence for a Complex CKM

We carefully analyse the present experimental evidence for a complex CKM matrix, even allowing for New Physics contributions to $ε_{K}$, $a_{J/ΨK_S}$, $ΔM_{B_{d}}$, $ΔM_{B_{s}}$, and the $ΔI=1/2$ piece of $B\toρρ$ and $B\toρπ$. We emphasize the crucial r\^ ole played by the angle $γ$ in both providing irrefutable evidence for a complex CKM matrix and placing constraints on the size of NP contributions. It is shown that even if one allows for New Physics a real CKM matrix is excluded at a 99.92% C.L., and the probability for the phase $γ$ to be in the interval $[-170^\circ;-10^\circ]\cup [10^\circ;170^\circ]$ is 99.7%.

The size of chi = arg (-Vts Vtb* Vcs* Vcb) and physics beyond the Standard Model

We analyse the allowed range of values of chi, both in the Standard Model and in models with New Physics, pointing out that a relatively large value of chi, e.g. of order lambda, is only possible in models where the unitarity of the 3x3 Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix is violated through the introduction of extra Q=2/3 quarks. We study the interesting case where the extra quark is an isosinglet, determining the allowed range for chi and the effect of a large chi on various low-energy observables, such as CP asymmetries in B meson decays. We also discuss the correlated effects which would be observable at high energy colliders, like decays t -> cZ, modifications of the cross section and forward-backward asymmetry in e+ e- -> ttbar and the direct production of a new quark.

Universality of Yukawa Couplings Confronts Recent Neutrino Data

We propose a flavour structure for the leptonic sector of the Standard Model, based on the idea of universality of Yukawa couplings, which accommodates all the experimental data on neutrino masses and mixing, at the same time predicting specific correlations between low energy measurable quantities, such as the ratio of neutrino squared mass differences, $|U_{13}|$, the leptonic Dirac phase, and the double-beta decay mass parameter. We also point out that it is possible, in this framework, to generate a sufficient amount of baryon asymmetry of the Universe through leptogenesis.

CP violation versus flavour in supersymmetric theories

We show that the quark flavour structure and CP violating phenomena are strongly correlated in supersymmetric theories. For a generic pattern of supersymmetry breaking the two broad categories of Yukawa couplings, democratic and hierarchical textures, have entirely different phenomenological implications. With hierarchical Yukawas, the rephasing invariant phase, arg(V_us V_cb V_cb^* V_cs^*), in the CKM mixing matrix has to be of order unity, while the SUSY CP violating phases are severely constrained by electric dipole moments, giving rise to the so-called SUSY CP problem. With democratic Yukawas, all experimental CP results can be accommodated with small values for the CKM and SUSY CP violating phases (i.e., CP can be considered as an approximate symmetry at the high energy scale). We also show that within this scenario, an entirely real CKM matrix in supersymmetric models is still allowed by the present experimental results.

Extra Dimensions, Isosinglet Charged Leptons and Neutrino Factories

Isosinglet fermions naturally arise in a variety of extensions of the Standard Model, in particular in models with extra dimensions. In this paper, we study the effect of the addition of a new isosinglet charged lepton to the standard spectrum, with special emphasis on implications for neutrino asymmetries to be measured at future neutrino factories. Lepton flavour violation in neutral current and lepton universality constraints are extensively discussed. We show that new physics effects in $ν_e-ν_μ$ CP asymmetries are significantly enhanced due to leptonic maximal mixings but still too small to give a signature at future neutrino factories. A signal for CP asymmetries in $ν_μ-ν_τ$ channel due to new physics could be observed at $1-3 σ$ if lepton flavour violating $τ$ decays are seen in a very close future in B-factories like BELLE experiment.

Split Fermions in Extra Dimensions and CP Violation

We discuss CP violation in the quark sector within a novel approach to the Yukawa puzzle proposed by Arkani-Hamed and Schmaltz, where Yukawa hierarchies result from localising the Standard Model quark field wave-functions, at different positions (in the extra dimensions) in a ``fat-brane.'' We show that at least two extra dimensions are necessary in order to obtain sufficient CP violation while reproducing the correct quark mass spectrum and mixing angles.

Spontaneous CP Violation in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model Revisited

We re-examine spontaneous CP violation at the tree level in the context of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM) with two Higgs doublets and a gauge singlet field. We analyse the most general Higgs potential without a discrete Z_3 symmetry, and derive an upper bound on the mass of the lightest neutral Higgs boson consistent with present experimental data. We investigate, in particular, its dependence on the admixture and CP-violating phase of the gauge singlet field, as well as on tan(beta). To assess the viability of the spontaneous CP violation scenario, we estimate epsilon_K by applying the mass insertion approximation. We find that a non-trivial flavour structure in the soft-breaking A terms is required to account for the observed CP violation in the neutral kaon sector. Furthermore, combining the minimisation conditions for spontaneous CP violation with the constraints coming from K0-K0bar mixing, we find that the upper bound on the lightest Higgs-boson mass becomes stronger. We also point out that the electric dipole moments of electron and neutron are a serious challenge for SUSY models with spontaneous CP violation.

CP violation from new quarks in the chiral limit

We characterize CP violation in the SU(2)xU(1) model due to an extra vector-like quark or sequential family, giving special emphasis to the chiral limit m_{u,d,s}=0. In this limit, CP is conserved in the three generation Standard Model (SM), thus implying that all CP violation is due to the two new CP violating phases whose effects may manifest either at high energy in processes involving the new quark or as deviations from SM unitarity equalities among imaginary parts of invariant quartets (or, equivalently, areas of unitarity triangles). In our analysis we use an invariant formulation, independent of the choice of weak quark basis or the phase convention in the generalized Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. We identify the three weak-basis invariants, as well as the three imaginary parts of quartets B_{1-3} which, in the chiral limit, give the strength of CP violation beyond the SM. We find that for an extra vector-like quark |B_i| <= 10^{-4}, whereas for an extra sequential family |B_i| <= 10^{-2}.

Texture Zeros and Weak Basis Transformations

We investigate the physical meaning of some of the "texture zeros" which appear in most of the Ansatze on quark masses and mixings. It is shown that starting from arbitrary quark mass matrices and making a suitable weak basis transformation one can obtain some of these sets of zeros which therefore have no physical content. We then analyse the physical implications of a four-texture zero Ansatz which is in agreement with all present experimental data.

Electroweak Baryogenesis in the Presence of an Isosinglet Quark

We consider the possibility of electroweak baryogenesis in a simple extension of the standard model with an extra singlet complex scalar and a vector-like down quark. We show that in the present model the first-order electroweak phase transition can be strong enough to avoid the baryon asymmetry washout by sphalerons and that the CP-violating effects can be sufficient to explain the observed baryon-to-entropy ratio nB/s ~ 10^(-10). Other appealing features of the model include the generation of a CKM phase from spontaneous CP breaking at a high energy scale and a possible solution of the strong CP problem through the natural suppression of the parameter theta.

Quasi degenerate Neutrino Masses with Universal Strength Yukawa Couplings

A simple ansatz is proposed for neutrino and charged lepton mass matrices, within the framework of universal strength for Yukawa couplings. In this framework all Yukawa couplings have equal moduli and the flavour dependence is only in their phases. We take into account the solar neutrino deficit and the atmospheric neutrino anomaly, assuming three neutrino families only. The ansatz leads in a natural way to small mixing involving neutrinos of quasi degenerate masses, as required to explain the solar neutrino deficit in the nonadiabatic MSW solution, while having the large mixing necessary to explain the atmospheric neutrino anomaly.

How sensitive to FCNC can $B^0$ CP asymmetries be?

We show that the study of CP asymmetries in neutral B-meson decays provides a very sensitive probe of flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNC). We introduce two new angles, $α_{SM}$ and $β_{SM}$, whose main feature is that they can be readily obtained from the measurement of the CP asymmetries $a_{J/ψK_s}$, $a_{π^+ π^-}$ and the ratio $R_u \equiv|V_{ud}V_{ub}^*|/|V_{cd}V_{cb}^*|$, providing a quantitative test of the presence of new physics in a model-independent way. Assuming that new physics is due to the presence of an isosinglet down-type quark, we indicate how to reconstruct the unitarity quadrangles and point out that the measurements of the above asymmetries, within the expected experimental errors, may detect FCNC effects, even for values of $|\sum_{i=1}^3 V_{id} V_{ib}^* / (V_{td} V_{tb}^*)| $ at the level of a few times $10^{-2}$.

A New Approach to the Yukawa Puzzle

We do a systematic analysis of the question of calculability of CKM matrix elements in terms of quark mass ratios, within the framework of the hypothesis of universality of strength for Yukawa couplings (USY), where all Yukawa couplings have equal moduli, and the flavor dependence is only in their phases. We use the fact that the limit $m_u=m_d=0$ is specially simple in USY, to construct the various ansätze. It is shown that the experimentally observed CKM matrix can be obtained within USY ansätze corresponding to simple relations among phases of Yukawa couplings. Within USY, one finds a natural explanation why Cabibbo mixing is significantly larger than the other CKM mixings. In the most successful of the USY ansätze, one obtains in leading order: $|V_{us}|=\sqrt{m_d/{m_s}}$ ; $ |V_{cb}|=\sqrt{2}(m_s/m_b)$ $ |V_{ub}|= (1/\sqrt{2})\sqrt{m_dm_s/m_b^2}$ ; $|V_{td}|= 3|V_{ub}|$. We study the behavior of this USY ansatz under the renormalization group.

$D^0 - \bar D^0$ Mixing in the Presence of Isosinglet Quarks

We analyse $ΔC=2$ transitions in the framework of a minimal extension of the Standard Model where either a $Q=2/3$ or a $Q=-1/3$ isosinglet quark is added to the standard quark spectrum. In the case of a $Q=2/3$ isosinglet quark, it is shown that there is a significant region of parameter space where $D^0 - \bar D^0$ mixing is sufficiently enhanced to be observed at the next round of experiments. On the contrary, in the case of a $Q=-1/3$ isosinglet quark, it is pointed out that obtaining a substancial enhancement of $D^0 - \bar D^0$ mixing, while complying with the experimental constraints on rare kaon decays, requires a contrived choice of parameters.

Supersymmetric Contributions to $\BB$ and $\KK$ Mixings

We show that in the supersymmetric standard model (SSM) box diagrams mediated by charginos and up-type squarks may give large contributions to $\BB$ and $\KK$ mixings. This is due to the fact that a heavy top quark mass allows large mass differences among the up-type squarks, which leads to a less efficient cancellation among the different squark diagrams. If the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the Higgs bosons is of order of unity, box diagrams mediated by charged Higgs bosons also contribute appreciably. For sizable regions of the SSM parameter space, the SSM contributions could be sufficiently large to affect significantly the evaluation of the CKM matrix from the experimental values of the mixing parameter $x_d$ and the $CP$ violation parameter $ε$.
