Flavour Changing Higgs Couplings in a Class of Two Higgs Doublet Models

We analyse various flavour changing processes like $t\to hu,hc$, $h\to τe,τμ$ as well as hadronic decays $h\to bs,bd$, in the framework of a class of two Higgs doublet models where there are flavour changing neutral scalar currents at tree level. These models have the remarkable feature of having these flavour-violating couplings entirely determined by the CKM and PMNS matrices as well as $\tanβ$. The flavour structure of these scalar currents results from a symmetry of the Lagrangian and therefore it is natural and stable under the renormalization group. We show that in some of the models the rates of the above flavour changing processes can reach the discovery level at the LHC at 13 TeV even taking into account the stringent bounds on low energy processes, in particular $μ\to eγ$.

What if the Masses of the First Two Quark Families are not Generated by the Standard Higgs?

We point out that, in the context of the SM, $|V^2_{13}| + | V^2_{23}|$ is expected to be large, of order one. The fact that $|V^2_{13}| + |V^2_{23}| \approx 1.6 \times 10^{-3}$ motivates the introduction of a symmetry S which leads to $V_{CKM} ={1\>\!\!\!\mathrm{I}} $, with only the third generation of quarks acquiring mass. We consider two scenarios for generating the mass of the first two quark generations and full quark mixing. One consists of the introduction of a second Higgs doublet which is neutral under S. The second scenario consists of assuming New Physics at a high energy scale , contributing to the masses of light quark generations, in an effective field theory approach. This last scenario leads to couplings of the Higgs particle to $s\overline s$ and $c \overline c$ which are significantly enhanced with respect to those of the SM. In both schemes, one has scalar-mediated flavour- changing neutral currents which are naturally suppressed. Flavour violating top decays are predicted in the second scenario at the level $ \mbox{Br} (t \rightarrow h c ) \geq 5\times 10^{-5}$.

Natural Quasi-Alignment with two Higgs Doublets and RGE Stability

In the context of two Higgs doublet models, we study the conditions required in order to have stable quasi-alignment in flavour space. We show that stability under the RGE imposes strong constraints on the flavour structure of the Yukawa couplings associated to each one of the Higgs doublets. In particular, we find a novel solution, where all Yukawa couplings are proportional to the so-called democratic matrix. This solution is rather unique, since it is the only stable solution which is a good starting point for reproducing the observed pattern of quark masses and mixing. We also show that this stable solution can be obtained by imposing on the Lagrangian a $Z_3 \times Z^\prime_3$ flavour symmetry. Quark masses of the lighter quark generations are generated through the breaking of this discrete symmetry, and, at this stage, scalar mediated FCNC arise, but are naturally suppressed by the smallness of light quark masses. In this way, we relate Higgs alignment to the hierarchy of quark masses through a discrete family symmetry.

Mixing asymmetries in B meson systems, the D0 like-sign dimuon asymmetry and generic New Physics

The measurement of a large like-sign dimuon asymmetry $A^b_{SL}$ by the D0 experiment at the Tevatron departs noticeably from Standard Model expectations and it may be interpreted as a hint of physics beyond the Standard Model contributing to $ΔB\neq 0$ transitions. In this work we analyse how the natural suppression of $A^b_{SL}$ in the SM can be circumvented by New Physics. We consider generic Standard Model extensions where the charged current mixing matrix is enlarged with respect to the usual $3\times 3$ unitary Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, and show how, within this framework, a significant enhancement over Standard Model expectations for $A^b_{SL}$ is easily reachable through enhancements of the semileptonic asymmetries $A^d_{SL}$ and $A^s_{SL}$ of both $B^0_d$ - $\bar B^0_d$ and $B^0_s$ - $\bar B^0_s$ systems. Despite being insufficient to reproduce the D0 measurement, such deviations from SM expectations may be probed by the LHCb experiment.

Physical Constraints on a Class of Two-Higgs Doublet Models with FCNC at tree level

We analyse the constraints and some of the phenomenological implications of a class of two Higgs doublet models where there are flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNC) at tree level but the potentially dangerous FCNC couplings are suppressed by small entries of the CKM matrix $V$. This class of models have the remarkable feature that, as a result of a discrete symmetry of the Lagrangian, the FCNC couplings are entirely fixed in the quark sector by $V$ and the ratio $v_2 /v_1$ of the vevs of the neutral Higgs. The discrete symmetry is extended to the leptonic sector, so that there are FCNC in the leptonic sector with their flavour structure fixed by the leptonic mixing matrix. We analyse a large number of processes, including decays mediated by charged Higgs at tree level, processes involving FCNC at tree level, as well as loop induced processes. We show that in this class of models one has new physical scalars beyond the standard Higgs boson, with masses reachable at the next round of experiments.

Invariants and Flavour in the General Two-Higgs Doublet Model

The flavour structure of the general Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) is analysed and a detailed study of the parameter space is presented, showing that flavour mixing in the 2HDM can be parametrized by various unitary matrices which arise from the misalignment in flavour space between pairs of various Hermitian flavour matrices which can be constructed within the model. This is entirely analogous to the generation of the CKM matrix in the Standard Model (SM). We construct weak basis invariants which can give insight into the physical implications of any flavour model, written in an arbitrary weak basis (WB) in the context of 2HDM. We apply this technique to two special cases, models with MFV and models with NNI structures. In both cases non-trivial CP-odd WB invariants arise in a mass power order much smaller than what one encounters in the SM, which can have important implications for baryogenesis in the framework of the general 2HDM.

The Hunt for New Physics in the Flavour Sector with up vector-like quarks

We analyse the possible presence of New Physics (NP) in the Flavour Sector and evaluate its potential for solving the tension between the experimental values of $\AJPKs$ and $\BTNu$ with respect to the Standard Model (SM) expectations. Updated model independent analyses, where NP contributions are allowed in Bd - anti-Bd and Bs - anti-Bs transitions, suggest the need of New Physics in the $bd$ sector. A detailed analysis of recent Flavour data is then presented in the framework of a simple extension of the SM, where a $Q=2/3$ vector-like isosinglet quark is added to the spectrum of the SM. Special emphasis is given to the implications of this model for correlations among various measurable quantities. We include constraints from all the relevant quark flavour sectors and give precise predictions for selected rare processes. We find important deviations from the SM in observables in the $bd$ sector like the semileptonic asymmetry $\asld$, $B_{d}^{0}\to μ^{+}μ^{-}$ and $A^s_{SL}-A^d_{SL}$. Other potential places where NP can show up include $A_{J/ΨΦ}$, $γ$, $K_{L}^{0}\to π^{0}ν\barν$, $t\to Zq$ and $D^{0}\to μ^{+}μ^{-}$ among others. The experimental data favours in this model the existence of an up vector-like quark with a mass below $600(1000)$ GeV at $1(2)$ $σ$.

Two-Higgs Leptonic Minimal Flavour Violation

We construct extensions of the Standard Model with two Higgs doublets, where there are flavour changing neutral currents both in the quark and leptonic sectors, with their strength fixed by the fermion mixing matrices $V_{CKM}$ and $V_{PMNS}$. These models are an extension to the leptonic sector of the class of models previously considered by Branco, Grimus and Lavoura, for the quark sector. We consider both the cases of Dirac and Majorana neutrinos and identify the minimal discrete symmetry required in order to implement the models in a natural way.

Can one detect new physics in I=0 and/or I=2 contributions to the decays B --> pi pi?

We study the effects of new-physics contributions to B --> pi pi decays, which can be parametrized as four new complex quantities. A simple analysis is provided by utilizing the reparametrization invariance of the decay amplitudes. We find that six quantities can be reabsorbed into the definitions of Standard Model-like parameters. As a result, the usual isospin analysis provides only two constraints on new physics which are independent of estimates for the Standard Model contributions. In particular, we show that one is not sensitive to new physics affecting the I=0 amplitudes. On the other hand, I=2 new physics can be detected, and its parameters can be measured by using independent determinations of the weak phases. We obtain constraints on these new-physics parameters through a fit to the current experimental data.

Measurements of New Physics in B -> pi pi Decays

If new physics (NP) is present in B -> pi pi decays, it can affect the isospin I=2 or I=0 channels. In this paper, we discuss various methods for detecting and measuring this NP. The techniques have increasing amounts of theoretical hadronic input. If NP is eventually detected in B -> pi pi -- there is no evidence for it at present -- one will be able to distinguish I=2 and I=0, and measure its parameters, using these methods.

New Physics and Evidence for a Complex CKM

We carefully analyse the present experimental evidence for a complex CKM matrix, even allowing for New Physics contributions to $ε_{K}$, $a_{J/ΨK_S}$, $ΔM_{B_{d}}$, $ΔM_{B_{s}}$, and the $ΔI=1/2$ piece of $B\toρρ$ and $B\toρπ$. We emphasize the crucial r\^ ole played by the angle $γ$ in both providing irrefutable evidence for a complex CKM matrix and placing constraints on the size of NP contributions. It is shown that even if one allows for New Physics a real CKM matrix is excluded at a 99.92% C.L., and the probability for the phase $γ$ to be in the interval $[-170^\circ;-10^\circ]\cup [10^\circ;170^\circ]$ is 99.7%.

The size of chi = arg (-Vts Vtb* Vcs* Vcb) and physics beyond the Standard Model

We analyse the allowed range of values of chi, both in the Standard Model and in models with New Physics, pointing out that a relatively large value of chi, e.g. of order lambda, is only possible in models where the unitarity of the 3x3 Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix is violated through the introduction of extra Q=2/3 quarks. We study the interesting case where the extra quark is an isosinglet, determining the allowed range for chi and the effect of a large chi on various low-energy observables, such as CP asymmetries in B meson decays. We also discuss the correlated effects which would be observable at high energy colliders, like decays t -> cZ, modifications of the cross section and forward-backward asymmetry in e+ e- -> ttbar and the direct production of a new quark.

Constraining models with vector-like fermions from FCNC in K and B physics

In this work, we update the constraints on tree level FCNC couplings in the framework of a theory with n isosinglet vector-like down quarks. In this context, we emphasize the sensitivity of the B -> J/psi K_S CP asymmetry to the presence of new vector-like down quarks. This CP asymmetry, together with the rare decays B -> X_{s,d} l bar{l} and K -> pi nu bar{nu} are the best options to further constrain the FCNC tree level couplings or even to point out, in the near future, the possible presence of vector-like quarks in the low energy spectrum, as suggested by GUT theories or models of large extra dimensions at the TeV scale.

Tree-level FCNC in the B system: from CP asymmetries to rare decays

Tree-level Flavor-Changing Neutral Currents (FCNC) are characteristic of models with extra vector-like quarks. These new couplings can strongly modify the B^0 CP asymmetries without conflicting with low--energy constraints. In the light of a low CP asymmetry in B --> J/ψK_{S}, we discuss the implications of these contributions. We find that even these low values can be easily accommodated in these models. Furthermore, we show that the new data from B factories tend to favor an O(20) enhancement of the b --> d l \bar{l} transition over the SM expectation.

preprint1997arXiv

How sensitive to FCNC can $B^0$ CP asymmetries be?

We show that the study of CP asymmetries in neutral B-meson decays provides a very sensitive probe of flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNC). We introduce two new angles, $α_{SM}$ and $β_{SM}$, whose main feature is that they can be readily obtained from the measurement of the CP asymmetries $a_{J/ψK_s}$, $a_{π^+ π^-}$ and the ratio $R_u \equiv|V_{ud}V_{ub}^*|/|V_{cd}V_{cb}^*|$, providing a quantitative test of the presence of new physics in a model-independent way. Assuming that new physics is due to the presence of an isosinglet down-type quark, we indicate how to reconstruct the unitarity quadrangles and point out that the measurements of the above asymmetries, within the expected experimental errors, may detect FCNC effects, even for values of $|\sum_{i=1}^3 V_{id} V_{ib}^* / (V_{td} V_{tb}^*)| $ at the level of a few times $10^{-2}$.

P-odd observables at the $Υ$ peak

We study the $γ$-Z interference in the process $e^+ e^-\to Υ\to τ^+ τ^-$ as a means to measure the neutral current coupling of the b-quark. The helicity amplitudes are calculated from resonant and background diagrams and the spin density matrix of the final state is discussed. The spin analyzer of the $τ$'s is illustrated with the decays $πν$ and $ρν\to (ππ) ν$. With $10^8 Υ$ a sensitivity to $g_V^b$ of a few per cent could be reachable.

A Novel Kind of Neutrino Oscillation Experiment

A novel method to look for neutrino oscillations is proposed based on the elastic scattering process $\barν_{i} e^{-}\rightarrow \barν_{i} e^{-}$, taking advantage of the dynamical zero present in the differential cross section for $\barν_{e} e^{-}\rightarrow \barν_{e} e^{-}$. An effective tunable experiment between the "appearance" and "disappearance" limits is made possible. Prospects to exclude the allowed region for atmospheric neutrino oscillations are given.

Jarlskog-like invariants for theories with scalars and fermions

Within the framework of theories where both scalars and fermions are present, we develop a systematic prescription for the construction of CP-violating quantities that are invariant under basis transformations of those matter fields. In theories with Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking, the analysis involves the vevs' transformation properties under a scalar basis change, with a considerable simplification of the study of CP violation in the scalar sector. These techniques are then applied in detail to the two Higgs-doublet model with quarks. It is shown that there are new invariants involving scalar-fermion interactions, besides those already derived in previous analyses for the fermion-gauge and scalar-gauge sectors.

Neutrino Magnetic Moment and the Process $νe \rightarrow νe γ$

The contribution of a neutrino magnetic moment $μ_ν$ to the cross section of the process $νe^{-}\rightarrow νe^{-} γ$ has been calculated and compared with the Standard Electroweak one. The radiative process allows to reach low enough values of $Q^2$ without the need to operate at very small energies of recoil electrons. Regions in the phase space which are more favourable to set bounds on $μ_ν$ are suggested.

preprint1994arXiv

Neutrino Mass and Magnetic Moment from Neutrino-Electron Scattering

We study both the elastic ($νe \rightarrow νe$) and the radiative process ($νe \rightarrow νe γ$) and discuss how these processes can shed light on some current topics in neutrino physics such as a neutrino magnetic moment and neutrino oscillations. The radiative process allows to reach low values of $Q^2$ without the need to operate at very small energies of recoil electrons, a favourable scenario to search for a neutrino magnetic moment. The elastic cross section contains a dynamical zero at $E_ν=m/(4 sin^2θ_{W})$ and forward electrons for the electron antineutrino channel, which is reachable at reactor facilities and accessible after the convolution with the antineutrino spectrum. The implication for lepton flavour changing transitions in that energy region searched for in neutrino oscillation experiments, which combine disappearance and appearance rates, is discussed.

Dynamical zeros in neutrino-electron elastic scattering at leading order

We show the existence of dynamical zeros in the helicity amplitudes for neutrino-electron elastic scattering at lowest order in the standard theory. In particular, the $λ=1/2$ non-flip electron helicity amplitude in the electron antineutrino process vanishes for an incident neutrino energy $E_ν=m_{e}/(4sin^{2}θ_{W})$ and forward electrons (maximum recoil energy). The rest of helicity amplitudes show kinematical zeros in this configuration and therefore the cross section vanishes. Prospects to search for neutrino magnetic moment are discussed.
