Tunable magnetically induced transparency spectra in magnon-magnon coupled Y3Fe5O12/permalloy bilayers

Hybrid magnonic systems host a variety of characteristic quantum phenomena such as the magnetically-induced transparency (MIT) and Purcell effect, which are considered useful for future coherent quantum information processing. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a tunable MIT effect in the Y3Fe5O12(YIG)/Permalloy(Py) magnon-magnon coupled system via changing the magnetic field orientations. By probing the magneto-optic effects of Py and YIG, we identify clear features of MIT spectra induced by the mode hybridization between the uniform mode of Py and the perpendicular standing spin-wave modes of YIG. By changing the external magnetic field orientations, we observe a tunable coupling strength between the YIG's spin-wave modes and the Py's uniform mode, upon the application of an out-of-plane magnetic field. This observation is theoretically interpreted by a geometrical consideration of the Py and YIG magnetization under the oblique magnetic field even at a constant interfacial exchange coupling. Our findings show high promise for investigating tunable coherent phenomena with hybrid magnonic platforms.

Writable spin wave nanochannels in an artificial-spin-ice-mediated ferromagnetic thin film

Magnonics, which employs spin-waves to transmit and process information, is a promising venue for low-power data processing. One of the major challenges is the local control of the spin-wave propagation path. Here, we introduce the concept of writable magnonics by taking advantage of the highly flexible reconfigurability and rewritability of artificial spin ice systems. Using micromagnetic simulations, we show that globally switchable spin-wave propagation and the locally writable spin-wave nanochannels can be realized in a ferromagnetic thin film underlying an artificial pinwheel spin ice. The rewritable magnonics enabled by reconfigurable spin wave nanochannels provides a unique setting to design programmable magnonic circuits and logic devices for ultra-low power applications.

Nano-engineering the evolution of skyrmion crystal in synthetic antiferromagnets

The evolution of skyrmion crystal encapsulates skyrmion critical behaviors, such as nucleation, deformation and annihilation. Here, we achieve a tunable evolution of artificial skyrmion crystal in nanostructured synthetic antiferromagnet multilayers, which are comprised of perpendicular magnetic multilayers and nanopatterned arrays of magnetic nanodots. The out-of-plane magnetization hysteresis loops and first-order reversal curves show that the nucleation and annihilation of the artificial skyrmion can be controlled by tuning the diameter of and spacing between the nanodots. Moreover, when the bottom layer thickness increases, the annihilation of skyrmion shifts from evolving into a ferromagnetic spin texture to evolving into an antiferromagnetic spin texture. Most significantly, non-volatile multiple states are realized at zero magnetic field via controlling the proportion of the annihilated skyrmions in the skyrmion crystal. Our results demonstrate the tunability and flexibility of the artificial skyrmion platform, providing a promising route to achieve skyrmion-based multistate devices, such as neuromorphic spintronic devices.

Strong coupling between magnons confined in a single magnonic cavity

Strong coupling between magnons and cavity photons was studied extensively for quantum electrodynamics in the past few years. Recently, the strong magnon-magnon coupling between adjacent layers in magnetic multilayers has been reported. However, the strongly coupled magnons confined in a single nanomagnet remains to be revealed. Here, we report the interaction between different magnon modes in a single magnonic cavity. The intermodel coupling between edge and center magnon modes in the strong coupling regime was approached with a maximum coupling strength of 0.494 GHz and cooperativity of 60.1 with a damping of 1X10-3. Furthermore, it is found that the coupling strength is highly dependent on the geometric parameters of the magnonic cavity. Our findings could greatly enrich the still evolving field of quantum magnonics.

Enhancement of Zero-Field Skyrmion Density in [Pt/Co/Fe/Ir]2 Multilayers by FORC

Magnetic skyrmions are novel topological spin textures on the nanoscale, and significant efforts have been taken to improve their zero-field density at room temperature (RT). In this work, we reported an approach of improving zero-field skyrmion density in [Pt/Co/Fe/Ir]2 multilayers at RT by using the first-order reversal curve (FORC) technique. Firstly, we investigated the nucleation and annihilation mechanism of magnetic skyrmions using polar magneto-optical Kerr effect measurement. Secondly, the FORC technique was used to obtain information on the irreversible or reversible behaviors in the magnetization switching process. It was found from FORC diagram that the magnetization reversal mechanism can be characterized into three stages: (1) reversible labyrinth stripe domains expanding or shrinking stage; (2) irreversible stripe domains fracturing stage; and (3) irreversible skyrmion annihilation stage. At the end, we demonstrated that the zero-field skyrmion density can be highly improved by choosing reversal field from the irreversible stages. Our results have established the FORC measurement as a valuable tool for investigating magnetic multilayers of high skyrmion densities.

Emergent Geometric Frustration of Artificial Magnetic Skyrmion Crystals

Magnetic skyrmions have been receiving growing attention as potential information storage and magnetic logic devices since an increasing number of materials have been identified that support skyrmion phases. Explorations of artificial frustrated systems have led to new insights into controlling and engineering new emergent frustration phenomena in frustrated and disordered systems. Here, we propose a skyrmion spin ice, giving a unifying framework for the study of geometric frustration of skyrmion crystals in a non-frustrated artificial geometrical lattice as a consequence of the structural confinement of skyrmions in magnetic potential wells. The emergent ice rules from the geometrically frustrated skyrmion crystals highlight a novel phenomenon in this skyrmion system: emergent geometrical frustration. We demonstrate how skyrmion crystal topology transitions between a non-frustrated periodic configuration and a frustrated ice-like ordering can also be realized reversibly. The proposed artificial frustrated skyrmion systems can be annealed into different ice phases with an applied current induced spin-transfer torque, including a long range ordered ice rule obeying ground state, as-relaxed random state, biased state and monopole state. The spin-torque reconfigurability of the artificial skyrmion ice states, difficult to achieve in other artificial spin ice systems, is compatible with standard spintronic device fabrication technology, which makes the semiconductor industrial integration straightforward.
