Hall anomaly, Quantum Oscillations and Possible Lifshitz Transitions in Kondo Insulator YbB$_{12}$: Evidence for Unconventional Charge Transport

In correlated electronic systems, strong interactions and the interplay between different degrees of freedom may give rise to anomalous charge transport properties, which can be tuned by external parameters like temperature and magnetic field. Recently, magnetic quantum oscillations and metallic low-temperature thermal conductivity have been observed in the Kondo insulator YbB$_{12}$, whose resistivity is a few orders of magnitude higher than those of conventional metals. As yet, these unusual observations are not fully understood. Here we present a detailed investigation of the behavior of YbB$_{12}$ under intense magnetic fields using both transport and torque magnetometry measurements. A low-field Hall anomaly, reminiscent of the Hall response associated with "strange-metal" physics, develops at $T < 1.5$ K. At two characteristic magnetic fields ($μ_0H_1= 19.6$ T and $μ_0H_2 \sim 31$ T), signatures appear in the Hall coefficient, magnetic torque, and magnetoresistance. We suggest that they are likely to be field-induced Lifshitz transitions. Moreover, above 35 T, the background resistivity displays an unusual, nonmetallic $T^α$-behavior, with $α$ being field-dependent and varying between -1.5 and -2. By normalizing the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation amplitude to this $T^α$-dependence, the calculated cyclotron mass becomes more consistent with that deduced from de Haas-van Alphen oscillations. Our results support a novel two-fluid scenario in YbB$_{12}$: a Fermi-liquid-like fluid of charge-neutral quasiparticles coexists with charge carriers that remain in a nonmetallic state. The former experience successive Lifshitz transitions and develop Landau quantization in applied magnetic fields, whilst scattering between both fluids allows the Shubnikov-de Haas effect to be observed in the electrical transport.

Surface Kondo Effect and Non-Trivial Metallic State of the Kondo Insulator YbB12

A synergistic effect between strong electron correlation and spin-orbit interaction (SOI) has been theoretically predicted to result in a new topological state of quantum matter on Kondo insulators (KIs), so-called topological Kondo insulators (TKIs). One TKI candidate has been experimentally observed on the KI SmB6(001), and the origin of the surface states (SS) and the topological order of SmB6 has been actively discussed. Here, we show a metallic SS on the clean surface of another TKI candidate YbB12(001), using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The SS showed temperature-dependent reconstruction corresponding with the Kondo effect observed for bulk states. Despite the low-temperature insulating bulk, the reconstructed SS with c-f hybridization was metallic, forming a closed Fermi contour surrounding $\barΓ$ on the surface Brillouin zone and agreeing with the theoretically expected behavior for SS on TKIs. These results demonstrate the temperature-dependent holistic reconstruction of two-dimensional states localized on KIs surface driven by the Kondo effect.

Evidence for Gamma_8 Ground-State Symmetry of Cubic YbB12 Probed by Linear Dichroism in Core-Level Photoemission

We have successfully observed linear dichroism in angle-resolved Yb3+ 3d5/2 core-level photoemission spectra for YbB12 in cubic symmetry. Its anisotropic 4f charge distribution due to the crystal-field splitting is responsible for the linear dichroism, which has been verified by spectral simulations using ionic calculations with the full multiplet theory for a single-site Yb3+ ion in cubic symmetry. The observed linear dichroism as well as the polarization-dependent spectra in two different photoelectron directions for YbB12 are quantitatively reproduced by theoretical analysis for the Gamma_8 ground state, indicating the Gamma_8 ground-state symmetry for the Yb3+ ions mixed with the Yb2+ state.

Spin-polarized angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of the so-predicted Kondo topological insulator SmB6

Undoped and slightly Eu-doped SmB6 show the opening of a gap with decreasing temperature below ~150 K. The spectral shapes near the Fermi level (EF) at 15 K have shown strong increase in intensity of a peak at a binding energy (EB) of around 12 meV with decreasing the photon energy (hn) from 17 eV down to 7 eV. Angle resolved spectra of SmB6 measured at hn = 35 eV just after the in-situ cleavage showed clear dispersions of several bands in the EB region from EF to 4 eV. Spin-polarized photoelectron spectra were then measured at 12 K and light incidence angle of ~50 deg. In contrast to the lack of spin polarization for the linearly polarized light excitation, clear spin polarization was observed in the case of circularly polarized light excitation. The two prominent peaks at EB~12 and ~150 meV have shown opposite signs of spin polarization which are reversed when the helicity of the light is reversed. The sign and the magnitude of spin- polarization are consistent with a theoretical prediction for the 6H5/2 and 6H7/2 states.

Effect of Nd substitution on the magnetic order in Ce_xNd_{1-x}B_6 solid solutions

Neutron powder diffraction measurements have been performed on Ce_xNd_{1-x}B_6 (x = 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, and 0.8) solid solutions to determine the type of magnetic order occurring in these compounds as a result of the interplay between magnetic dipole exchange and antiferroquadrupolar interactions. In the Ce-rich range, the sequence of two magnetic phases, with an incommensurate order [k = (1/4 -δ, 1/4 -δ, 1/2)] forming below T N followed by a lock-in--type transition at lower temperature, is quite similar to that reported earlier for Ce_xPr_{1-x} B_6. For x = 0.5, on the other hand, the same antiferromagnetic order as in pure NdB6 first occurs at TN, then coexists with an incommensurate component below the lower transition temperature. These results are in good agreement with previous resistivity measurements and support the idea that Ce and Nd magnetic moments in this system can be relatively decoupled.

Magnetic-Field-Induced 4f-Octupole in CeB6 Probed by Resonant X-ray Diffraction

CeB6, a typical Gamma_8-quartet system, exhibits a mysterious antiferroquadrupolar ordered phase in magnetic fields, which is considered as originating from the T_{xyz}-type magnetic octupole moment induced by the field. By resonant x-ray diffraction in magnetic fields, we have verified that the T_{xyz}-type octupole is indeed induced in the 4f-orbital of Ce with a propagation vector (1/2, 1/2, 1/2), thereby supporting the theory. We observed an asymmetric field dependence of the intensity for an electric quadrupole (E2) resonance when the field was reversed, and extracted a field dependence of the octupole by utilizing the interference with an electric dipole (E1) resonance. The result is in good agreement with that of the NMR-line splitting, which reflects the transferred hyperfine field at the Boron nucleus from the anisotropic spin distribution of Ce with an O_{xy}-type quadrupole. The field-reversal method used in the present study opens up the possibility of being widely applied to other multipole ordering systems such as NpO2, Ce_{x}La_{1-x}B_{6}, SmRu_{4}P_{12}, and so on.
