Towards a derivation of Classical ElectroDynamics of charges and fields from QED

The purpose of this article is twofold. On one hand, we rigorously derive the Newton--Maxwell equation in the Coulomb gauge from first principles of quantum electrodynamics in agreement with the formal Bohr's correspondence principle of quantum mechanics. On the other hand, we establish the global well-posedness of the Newton--Maxwell system on energy-spaces under weak assumptions on the charge distribution. Both results improve the state of the art, and are obtained by incorporating semiclassical and measure theoretical techniques. One of the novelties is the use of quantum propagation properties in order to build global solutions of the Newton--Maxwell equation.

Ground states and associated path measures in the renormalized Nelson model

We prove the existence, uniqueness, and strict positivity of ground states of the possibly massless renormalized Nelson operator under an infrared regularity condition and for Kato decomposable electrostatic potentials fulfilling a binding condition. If the infrared regularity condition is violated, then we show non-existence of ground states of the massless renormalized Nelson operator with an arbitrary Kato decomposable potential. Furthermore, we prove the existence, uniqueness, and strict positivity of ground states of the massless renormalized Nelson operator in a non-Fock representation where the infrared condition is unnecessary. Exponential and superexponential estimates on the pointwise spatial decay and the decay with respect to the boson number for elements of spectral subspaces below localization thresholds are provided. Moreover, some continuity properties of ground state eigenvectors are discussed. Byproducts of our analysis are a hypercontractivity bound for the semigroup and a new remark on Nelson's operator theoretic renormalization procedure. Finally, we construct path measures associated with ground states of the renormalized Nelson operator. Their analysis entails improved boson number decay estimates for ground state eigenvectors, as well as upper and lower bounds on the Gaussian localization with respect to the field variables in the ground state. As our results on uniqueness, positivity, and path measures exploit the ergodicity of the semigroup, we restrict our attention to one matter particle. All results are non-perturbative.

Enhanced binding of an N-particle system interacting with a scalar field II.Relativistic version

An enhanced binding of $N$-{\it relativistic} particles coupled to a massless scalar bose field is investigated. It is not assumed that the system has a ground state for the zero-coupling. It is shown, however, that there exists a ground state for sufficiently large coupling. The proof is based on checking the stability condition and showing a uniform exponential decay of infrared regularized ground states.

Periodic Solutions of Generalized Schrödinger Equations on Cayley Trees

In this paper we define a discrete generalized Laplacian with arbitrary real power on a Cayley tree. This Laplacian is used to define a discrete generalized Schrödinger operator on the tree. The case discrete fractional Schrödinger operators with index $0 < α< 2$ is considered in detail, and periodic solutions of the corresponding fractional Schrödinger equations are described. This periodicity depends on a subgroup of a group representation of the Cayley tree. For any subgroup of finite index we give a criterion for eigenvalues of the Schrödinger operator under which periodic solutions exist. For a normal subgroup of infinite index we describe a wide class of periodic solutions.

Self-adjointness of semi-relativistic Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian

The spinless semi-relativistic Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian $H$ in quantum electrodynamics is considered. The self-adjointness and essential self-adjointness of $H$ are shown. It is emphasized that it includes the massless case. Furthermore, the self-adjointness and the essential self-adjointness of the semi-relativistic Pauli-Fierz model with a fixed total momentum is also proven.

Translation invariant models in QFT without ultraviolet cutoffs

The translation invariant model in quantum field theory is considered by functional integrations. Ultraviolet renormalization of the translation invariant Nelson model with a fixed total momentum is proven by functional integrations. As a corollary it can be shown that the Nelson Hamiltonian with zero total momentum has a ground state for arbitrary values of coupling constants in two dimension. Furthermore the ultraviolet renormalization of the polaron model is also studied.

Functional integral approach to semi-relativistic Pauli-Fierz models

By means of functional integrations spectral properties of semi-relativistic Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonians in quantum electrodynamics is considered. Two self-adjoint extensions of a semi-relativistic Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian are defined. An essential self-adjointness, a spatial decay of bound states, a Gaussian domination of the ground state and the existence of a measure associated with the ground state are shown.

Spectrum of the semi-relativistic Pauli-Fierz model I

HVZ type theorem for semi-relativistic Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian, $$\HHH=\sqrt{(p\otimes \one -A)^2+M^2}+V\otimes \one +\one\otimes \hf,\quad M\geq 0,$$ in quantum electrodynamics is studied. Here $H$ is a self-adjoint operator in Hilbert space $\LR\otimes \fff\cong \int^\oplus_{\RR^d}\fff {\rm d}x$, and $A=\int^\oplus_{\RR^d} A(x) {\rm d}x$ a quantized radiation field and $\hf$ the free field Hamiltonian defined by the second quantization of a dispersion relation $ω:\RR^d\to \RR$. It is emphasized that massless case, $M=0$, is included. Let $E=\inf σ(\HHH)$ be the bottom of the spectrum of $\HHH$. Suppose that the infimum of $ω$ is $m>0$. Then it is shown that $σ_{\rm ess}(\HHH)=[E+m, \infty)$. In particular the existence of the ground state of $\HHH$ can be proven.

Spin-Boson Model through a Poisson-Driven Stochastic Process

We give a functional integral representation of the semigroup generated by the spin-boson Hamiltonian by making use of a Poisson point process and a Euclidean field. We present a method of constructing Gibbs path measures indexed by the full real line which can be applied also to more general stochastic processes with jump discontinuities. Using these tools we then show existence and uniqueness of the ground state of the spin-boson, and analyze ground state properties. In particular, we prove super-exponential decay of the number of bosons, Gaussian decay of the field operators, derive expressions for the positive integer, fractional and exponential moments of the field operator, and discuss the field fluctuations in the ground state.

Spectral analysis of non-commutative harmonic oscillators: the lowest eigenvalue and no crossing

The lowest eigenvalue of non-commutative harmonic oscillators $Q$ is studied. It is shown that $Q$ can be decomposed into four self-adjoint operators, and all the eigenvalues of each operator are simple. We show that the lowest eigenvalue $E$ of $Q$ is simple. Furthermore a Jacobi matrix representation of $Q$ is given and spectrum of $Q$ is considered numerically.

The Spectrum of Non-Local Discrete Schroedinger Operators with a delta-Potential

The behaviour of the spectral edges (embedded eigenvalues and resonances) is discussed at the two ends of the continuous spectrum of non-local discrete Schrödinger operators with a $δ$-potential. These operators arise by replacing the discrete Laplacian by a strictly increasing $C^1$-function of the discrete Laplacian. The dependence of the results on this function and the lattice dimension are explicitly derived. It is found that while in the case of the discrete Schrödinger operator these behaviours are the same no matter which end of the continuous spectrum is considered, an asymmetry occurs for the non-local cases. A classification with respect to the spectral edge behaviour is also offered.

Enhanced Binding in Quantum Field Theory

This lecture note consists of three parts. Fundamental facts on Boson Fock space are introduced in Part I. Ref. 1.and 3. are reviewed in Part II and, Ref. 2. and 4. in Part III. In Part I a symplectic structure of a Boson Fock space is studied and a projective unitary representation of an infinite dimensional symplectic group through Bogoliubov transformations is constructed. In Part II the so-called Pauli-Fierz model (PF model) with the dipole approximation in non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics is investigated. This model describes a minimal interaction between a massless quantized radiation field and a quantum mechanical particle (electron) governed by Schrödinger operator. By applying the Bogoliubov transformation introduced in Part I we investigate the spectrum of the PF model. First the translation invariant case is considered and the dressed electron state with a fixed momentum is studied. Secondly the absence of ground state is proven by extending the Birman-Schwinger principle. Finally the enhanced binding of a ground state is discussed and the transition from unbinding to binding is shown. In Part III the so-called $N$-body Nelson model is studied. This model describes a linear interaction between a scalar field and $N$-body quantum mechanical particles. First the enhanced binding is shown by checking the so-called stability condition. Secondly the Nelson model with variable coefficients is discussed, which model can be derived when the Minkowskian space-time is replaced by a static Riemannian manifold, and the absence of ground state is proven, if the variable mass decays to zero sufficiently fast. The strategy is based on a path measure argument.

Note on the spectrum of discrete Schrödinger operators

The spectrum of discrete Schrödinger operator $L+V$ on the $d$-dimensional lattice is considered, where $L$ denotes the discrete Laplacian and $V$ a delta function with mass at a single point. Eigenvalues of $L+V$ are specified and the absence of singular continuous spectrum is proven. In particular it is shown that an embedded eigenvalue does appear for $d\geq5$ but does not for $1\leq d\leq 4$.

Probabilistic Representation and Fall-Off of Bound States of Relativistic Schrödinger Operators with Spin 1/2

A Feynman-Kac type formula of relativistic Schrödinger operators with unbounded vector potential and spin 1/2 is given in terms of a three-component process consisting of Brownian motion, a Poisson process and a subordinator. This formula is obtained for unbounded magnetic fields and magnetic field with zeros. From this formula an energy comparison inequality is derived. Spatial decay of bound states is established separately for growing and decaying potentials by using martingale methods.

A Probabilistic Representation of the Ground State Expectation of Fractional Powers of the Boson Number Operator

We give a formula in terms of a joint Gibbs measure on Brownian paths and the measure of a random-time Poisson process of the ground state expectations of fractional (in fact, any real) powers of the boson number operator in the Nelson model. We use this representation to obtain tight two-sided bounds. As applications, we discuss the polaron and translation invariant Nelson models.

Infrared problem for the Nelson model on static space-times

We consider the Nelson model with variable coefficients and investigate the problem of existence of a ground state and the removal of the ultraviolet cutoff. Nelson models with variable coefficients arise when one replaces in the usual Nelson model the flat Minkowski metric by a static metric, allowing also the boson mass to depend on position. A physical example is obtained by quantizing the Klein-Gordon equation on a static space-time coupled with a non-relativistic particle. We investigate the existence of a ground state of the Hamiltonian in the presence of the infrared problem, i.e. assuming that the boson mass tends to 0 at infinity.

The No-Binding Regime of the Pauli-Fierz Model

The Pauli-Fierz model $H(α)$ in nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics is considered. The external potential $V$ is sufficiently shallow and the dipole approximation is assumed. It is proven that there exist constants $0<α_-< α_+$ such that $H(α)$ has no ground state for $|α|<α_-$, which complements an earlier result stating that there is a ground state for $|α| > α_+$. We develop a suitable extension of the Birman-Schwinger argument. Moreover for any given $δ>0$ examples of potentials $V$ are provided such that $α_+-α_-<δ$.

Absence of ground state for the Nelson model on static space-times

We consider the Nelson model on some static space-times and investigate the problem of absence of a ground state. Nelson models with variable coefficients arise when one replaces in the usual Nelson model the flat Minkowski metric by a static metric, allowing also the boson mass to depend on position. We investigate the absence of a ground state of the Hamiltonian in the presence of the infrared problem, i.e. assuming that the boson mass $m(x)$ tends to $0$ at spatial infinity. Using path space techniques, we show that if $m(x)\leq C |x|^{-μ}$ at infinity for some $C>0$ and $μ>1$ then the Nelson Hamiltonian has no ground state.

On the ionization energy of the semi-relativistic Pauli-Fierz model for a single particle

A semi-relativistic Pauli-Fierz model is defined by the sum of the free Hamiltonian $H_{\rm f}$ of a Boson Fock space, an nuclear potential $V$ and a relativistic kinetic energy: $$ H=\sqrt{[σ\cdot(\mathbf{p}+e\mathbf{A})]^2+M^2} - M + V + H_{\rm f}. $$ Let $-e_0<0$ be the ground state energy of a semi-relativistic Schrödinger operator $$ H_{\rm p}=\sqrt{\mathbf{p}^2+M^2} - M + V. $$ It is shown that the ionization energy $E^{\rm ion}$ of $H$ satisfies $$E^{\rm ion}\geq e_0>0$$ for all values of both of the coupling constant $e\in\mathbb{R}$ and the rest mass $M\geq 0$. In particular our result includes the case of M=0.

Path Integral Representation for Schroedinger Operators with Bernstein Functions of the Laplacian

Path integral representations for generalized Schrödinger operators obtained under a class of Bernstein functions of the Laplacian are established. The one-to-one correspondence of Bernstein functions with Lévy subordinators is used, thereby the role of Brownian motion entering the standard Feynman-Kac formula is taken here by subordinated Brownian motion. As specific examples, fractional and relativistic Schrödinger operators with magnetic field and spin are covered. Results on self-adjointness of these operators are obtained under conditions allowing for singular magnetic fields and singular external potentials as well as arbitrary integer and half-integer spin values. This approach also allows to propose a notion of generalized Kato class for which hypercontractivity of the associated generalized Schrödinger semigroup is shown. As a consequence, diamagnetic and energy comparison inequalities are also derived.

Mass renormalization in nonrelativistic QED

In nonrelativistic QED the charge of an electron equals its bare value, whereas the self-energy and the mass have to be renormalized. In our contribution we study perturbative mass renormalization, including second order in the fine structure constant $α$, in the case of a single, spinless electron. As well known, if $m$ denotes the bare mass and $\mass$ the mass computed from the theory, to order $α$ one has $$\frac{\mass}{m} =1+\frac{8α}{3π} \log(1+\half (Λ/m))+O(α^2)$$ which suggests that $\mass/m=(Λ/m)^{8α/3π}$ for small $α$. If correct, in order $α^2$ the leading term should be $\displaystyle \half ((8α/3π)\log(Λ/m))^2$. To check this point we expand $\mass/m$ to order $α^2$. The result is $\sqrt{Λ/m}$ as leading term, suggesting a more complicated dependence of $m_{\mathrm{eff}}$ on $m$.
