Magnetovolume Effect on the First-Order Metamagnetic Transition in UTe$_2$

The link between the metamagnetic transition and novel spin-triplet superconductivity of UTe$_2$ was discussed thermodynamically through magnetostriction measurements in a pulsed-magnetic field. We revealed a discontinuous magnetostriction across the metamagnetic transition at $μ_0H_{\rm m}\approx 35$~T for the applied magnetic fields along the crystallographic $b$ axis in the orthorhombic structure. The resultanting volume magnetostriction of $ΔV/V \approx-5.9\times 10^{-4}$ gives the initial pressure dependence of $H_{\rm m}$ by employing the Clausius-Clapeyron's equation, which agrees with previous pressure experiments. Further, significant anisotropic magnetostriction (AMS), derived by subtracting the averaged linear magnetostriction, was revealed. Contrary to the weakly field-dependent AMS along the $a$ axis, those along the $b$ and $c$ axes show strong field dependences with a similar magnitude but with opposite signs, indicating its lattice instability. The relationship between characteristic energy scales of magnetic fields and temperatures was discussed in terms of the Grüneisen parameters compared to the other $f$-electron systems. The volume shrinkage in UTe$_2$ at $H_{\rm m}$, contrary to the volume expansion in typical heavy fermion metamagnets, pushes to invoke the link with the valence instability related to the itinerant-localized dual nature of the U magnetism.

Slow Electronic Dynamics in the Paramagnetic State of UTe$_2$

$^{125}$Te NMR experiments in field ($H$) applied along the easy magnetization axis (the $a$-axis) revealed slow electronic dynamics developing in the paramagnetic state of UTe$_2$. The observed slow fluctuations are concerned with a successive growth of long-range electronic correlations below 30$-$40 K, where the spin susceptibility along the hard magnetization axis (the $b$-axis) shows a broad maximum. The experiments also imply that tiny amounts of disorder or defects locally disturb the long-range electronic correlations and develop an inhomogeneous electronic state at low temperatures, leading to a low temperature upturn observed in the bulk-susceptibility in $H\|a$. We suggest that UTe$_2$ would be located on the paramagnetic side near an electronic phase boundary, where either magnetic or Fermi-surface instability would be the origin of the characteristic fluctuations.

Superconducting order parameter in UTe$_2$ determined by Knight shift measurement

This study investigates the spin susceptibility in U-based superconductor UTe$_2$ in the superconducting (SC) state by using Knight shift measurements for a magnetic field $H$ along the $a$ axis, which is the magnetic easy axis of UTe$_2$. Although a tiny anomaly ascribed to the SC diamagnetic effect was observed just below the SC transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$, the $a$-axis Knight shift in the SC state shows no significant decrease, following the extrapolation from the normal-state temperature dependence. This indicates that the spin susceptibility is nearly unchanged below $T_{\rm c}$. Considering the previous Knight shift results for $H \parallel b$ and $H \parallel c$, the dominant SC state is determined to be $B_{\rm 3u}$ in the spin-triplet pairing, which is consistent with the spin anisotropy in the normal state. The present result shows that UTe$_2$ is a spin-triplet superconductor with spin degrees of freedom.

Tricritical fluctuations and elastic properties of the Ising antiferromagnet UIrSi$_3$

Elastic constants, thermal expansion, magnetostriction and heat capacity measurements were performed with and without applied magnetic field on a single crystal of UIrSi$_3$. The elastic properties were interpreted within the theory of the strain-exchange effect. The exchange-striction model together with the Ising model for the behavior of magnetic localized 5$f$ electrons and itinerant electrons of uranium correctly reproduces the main features of our magneto-acoustic experiments in UIrSi$_3$. Data on thermal expansion and magnetostriction confirm the conclusion that the dominant contribution of the measured temperature and field change in the speed of sound comes from the change in the elastic modulus itself. Based on the analysis of heat capacity measurements in the magnetic field, we explain the significant anomalies at the second-order branch of the phase transition boundary as a manifestation of the tricritical fluctuations, dominating the region below the tricritical point. The outcome confirms the 3D Ising model, at zero and low magnetic fields, with a crossover to the mean-field tricritical behavior at fields close to the tricritical point, where tricritical fluctuations dominate the temperature evolution of the given property.

Multiple Superconducting Phases and Unusual Enhancement of the Upper Critical Field in UTe2

We performed AC calorimetry and magnetoresistance measurements under pressure for H || a-axis (easy-magnetization axis) in the novel heavy-fermion superconductor UTe2. Thanks to the thermodynamic information, multiple superconducting phases have been revealed under pressure and magnetic field. The (H,T) phase diagram of superconductivity under pressure displays an abrupt increase of the upper critical field (Hc2) at low temperature and in the high field region, and a strong convex curvature of Hc2 at high temperature. This behavior of Hc2 and the multiple superconducting phases require a state for the superconducting order parameter more complex than a spin-triplet equal spin pairing. Above the superconducting critical pressure, Pc, we find strong indications that the possible magnetic order is closer to antiferromagnetism than to ferromagnetism.

Orientation of point nodes and nonunitary triplet pairing tuned by the easy-axis magnetization in UTe2

The gap structure of a novel uranium-based superconductor UTe$_2$, situated in the vicinity of ferromagnetic quantum criticality, has been investigated via specific-heat $C(T,H,Ω)$ measurements in various field orientations. Its angular $Ω(ϕ,θ)$ variation shows a characteristic shoulder anomaly with a local minimum in $H \parallel a$ at moderate fields rotated within the $ab$ and $ac$ planes. Based on the theoretical calculations, these features can be attributed to the presence of point nodes in the superconducting gap along the $a$ direction. Under the field orientation along the easy-magnetization $a$ axis, an unusual temperature dependence of the upper critical field at low fields together with a convex downward curvature in $C(H)$ were observed. These anomalous behaviors can be explained on the basis of a nonunitary triplet state model with equal-spin pairing whose $T_{\rm c}$ is tuned by the magnetization along the $a$ axis. From these results, the gap symmetry of UTe$_2$ is most likely described by a vector order parameter of $d(k)=(b + ic)(k_b + ik_c)$.

Spin-Triplet Superconductivity in UTe2 and Ferromagnetic Superconductors

The spin-triplet state is most likely realized in uranium ferromagnetic superconductors, UGe2, URhGe, UCoGe. The microscopic coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity means that the Cooper pair should be realized under the strong internal field due the ferromagnetism, leading to the spin-triplet state with equal spin pairing. The field-reinforced superconductivity, which is observed in all three materials when the ferromagnetic fluctuations are enhanced, is one of the strong evidences for the spin-triplet superconductivity. We present here the results of a newly discovered spin-triplet superconductor, UTe2, and compare those with the results of ferromagnetic superconductors. Although no magnetic order is found in UTe2, there are similarities between UTe2 and ferromagnetic superconductors. For example, the huge upper critical field exceeding the Pauli limit and the field-reentrant superconductivity for H || b-axis are observed in UTe2, URhGe and UCoGe. We also show the specific heat results on UTe2 in different quality samples, focusing on the residual density of states in the superconducting phase.

Properties and Collapse of the Ferromagnetism in UCo1-xRuxAl Studied in Single Crystals

We have investigated the ferromagnetic (FM) phase which suddenly develops in UCo1-xRuxAl and is isolated by paramagnetic regions on both sides from the parent UCoAl and URuAl. For that purpose we have grown high quality single crystals with x = 0.62, 0.70, 0.74, 0.75 and 0.78. The properties of the FM phase have been investigated by microscopic and macroscopic methods. Polarized neutron diffraction on a single crystal with x = 0.62 revealed the gradual growth of the hybridization between U and T-site in the U - T plane with increasing x. Hybridization works here as a mediator of the strong indirect interaction, while the delocalized character of the 5 f states is still conserved. As a result very weak spontaneous magnetic moments are observed for all alloys with magnitude nearly in proportion to the TC for x < 0.62, while an enormous disproportion exists between them near xcrit.. The magnetization, specific heat, electrical resistivity, and Hall effect measurements confirmed that the FM transition is suppressed continuously at the critical concentration xcrit. = 0.77. Two quantum critical points are then expected on both sides of the FM dome. We propose a scenario that the order of the FM/PM transition differs at opposite boundaries of the FM dome. We conclude that both criticalities are influenced by disorder. Criticality on the UCoAl side has the character of a clean FM metal, while on the Ru rich side it has the character of a magnetically inhomogeneous system involving a Griffiths phase.
