Non-CSS color codes on 2D lattices : Models and Topological Properties

The two-dimensional color code is an alternative to the toric code that encodes more logical qubits while maintaining crucial features of the $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ toric code in the long wavelength limit. However its short range physics include single qubit Pauli operations that violate either three or six stabilisers as opposed to the toric code where single qubit Pauli operations violate two or four stabilisers. Exploiting this fact we construct several non-CSS versions of the two-dimensional color code falling into two families - those where either three, four or five stabilisers are violated and those which violate exactly four stabilisers for all the three types of single qubit Pauli operations. These models are not equivalent to the original color code by a local unitary transformation. Nevertheless the code spaces of the CSS and non-CSS versions are related by local unitaries which reflects the fact that their long range physics coincide. This also implies that the non-CSS versions host transversal Clifford gates and hence support fault-tolerant computations. As a consequence of the non-CSS structure, the logical operators are of a mixed type which in some cases include all the three Pauli operators making them potentially useful for protection against biased Pauli noise.

Braiding quantum gates from partition algebras

Unitary braiding operators can be used as robust entangling quantum gates. We introduce a solution-generating technique to solve the $(d,m,l)$-generalized Yang-Baxter equation, for $m/2\leq l \leq m$, which allows to systematically construct such braiding operators. This is achieved by using partition algebras, a generalization of the Temperley-Lieb algebra encountered in statistical mechanics. We obtain families of unitary and non-unitary braiding operators that generate the full braid group. Explicit examples are given for a 2-, 3-, and 4-qubit system, including the classification of the entangled states generated by these operators based on Stochastic Local Operations and Classical Communication.

Highly entangled spin chains and 2D quantum gravity

Motzkin and Fredkin spin chains exhibit the extraordinary amount of entanglement scaling as a square-root of the volume, which is beyond logarithmic scaling in the ordinary critical systems. Intensive study of such spin systems is urged to reveal novel features of quantum entanglement. As a study of the systems from a different viewpoint, we introduce large-N matrix models with so-called ABAB interactions, in which correlation functions reproduce the entanglement scaling in tree and planar Feynman diagrams. Including loop diagrams naturally defines an extension of the Motzkin and Fredkin spin chains. Contribution from the whole loop effects at large N gives the growth of the power of 3/2 (with logarithmic correction), further beyond the square-root scaling. The loop contribution provides fluctuating two-dimensional bulk geometry, and the enhancement of the entanglement is understood as an effect of quantum gravity.

Quantum entanglement, supersymmetry, and the generalized Yang-Baxter equation

Entangled states, such as the Bell and GHZ states, are generated from separable states using matrices known to satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation and its generalization. This remarkable fact hints at the possibility of using braiding operators as quantum entanglers, and is part of a larger speculated connection between topological and quantum entanglement. We push the analysis of this connection forward, by showing that supersymmetry algebras can be used to construct large families of solutions of the spectral parameter-dependent generalized Yang-Baxter equation. We present a number of explicit examples and outline a general algorithm for arbitrary numbers of qubits. The operators we obtain produce, in turn, all the entangled states in a multi-qubit system classified by the Stochastic Local Operations and Classical Communication protocol introduced in quantum information theory.

A one-loop test for construction of 4D N=4 SYM from 2D SYM via fuzzy sphere geometry

As a perturbative check of the construction of four-dimensional (4D) ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) from mass deformed ${\cal N}=(8,8)$ SYM on the two-dimensional (2D) lattice, the one-loop effective action for scalar kinetic terms is computed in ${\cal N}=4$ $U(k)$ SYM on ${\mathbb R}^2 \times$ (fuzzy $S^2$), which is obtained by expanding 2D ${\cal N}=(8,8)$ $U(N)$ SYM with mass deformation around its fuzzy sphere classical solution. The radius of the fuzzy sphere is proportional to the inverse of the mass. We consider two successive limits: (1) decompactify the fuzzy sphere to a noncommutative (Moyal) plane and (2) turn off the noncommutativity of the Moyal plane. It is straightforward at the classical level to obtain the ordinary ${\cal N}=4$ SYM on ${\mathbb R}^4$ in the limits, while it is nontrivial at the quantum level. The one-loop effective action for $SU(k)$ sector of the gauge group $U(k)$ coincides with that of the ordinary 4D ${\cal N}=4$ SYM in the above limits. Although "noncommutative anomaly" appears in the overall $U(1)$ sector of the $U(k)$ gauge group, this can be expected to be a gauge artifact not affecting gauge invariant observables.

Large-$N$ limit of the gradient flow in the 2D $O(N)$ nonlinear sigma model

The gradient flow equation in the 2D $O(N)$ nonlinear sigma model with lattice regularization is solved in the leading order of the $1/N$ expansion. By using this solution, we analytically compute the thermal expectation value of a lattice energy--momentum tensor defined through the gradient flow. The expectation value reproduces thermodynamic quantities obtained by the standard large-$N$ method. This analysis confirms that the above lattice energy--momentum tensor restores the correct normalization automatically in the continuum limit, in a system with a non-perturbative mass gap.

Lattice Formulation for 2d N=(2,2), (4,4) Super Yang-Mills Theories without Admissibility Conditions

We present a lattice formulation for two-dimensional N=(2,2) and (4,4) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories that resolves vacuum degeneracy for gauge fields without imposing admissibility conditions. Cases of U(N) and SU(N) gauge groups are considered, gauge fields are expressed by unitary link variables, and one or two supercharges are preserved on the two-dimensional square lattice. There does not appear fermion doubler, and no fine-tuning is required to obtain the desired continuum theories in a perturbative argument. This formulation is expected to serve as a more convenient basis for numerical simulations. The same approach will also be useful to other two-dimensional supersymmetric lattice gauge theories with unitary link variables constructed so far -- for example, N=(8,8) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and N=(2,2) supersymmetric QCD.

Supersymmetric double-well matrix model as two-dimensional type IIA superstring on RR background

In the previous paper, the authors pointed out correspondence of a supersymmetric double-well matrix model with two-dimensional type IIA superstring theory on a nontrivial Ramond-Ramond background from the viewpoint of symmetries and spectrum. In this paper we further investigate the correspondence from dynamical aspects by comparing scattering amplitudes in the matrix model and those in the type IIA theory. In the latter, cocycle factors are introduced to vertex operators in order to reproduce correct transformation laws and target-space statistics. By a perturbative treatment of the Ramond-Ramond background as insertions of the corresponding vertex operators, various IIA amplitudes are explicitly computed including quantitatively precise numerical factors. We show that several kinds of amplitudes in both sides indeed have exactly the same dependence on parameters of the theory. Moreover, we have a number of relations among coefficients which connect quantities in the type IIA theory and those in the matrix model. Consistency of the relations convinces us of the validity of the correspondence.

Tracy-Widom distribution as instanton sum of 2D IIA superstrings

We present an analytic expression of the nonperturbative free energy of a double-well supersymmetric matrix model in its double scaling limit, which corresponds to two-dimensional type IIA superstring theory on a nontrivial Ramond-Ramond background. To this end we draw upon the wisdom of random matrix theory developed by Tracy and Widom, which expresses the largest eigenvalue distribution of unitary ensembles in terms of a Painleve II transcendent. Regularity of the result at any value of the string coupling constant shows that the third-order phase transition between a supersymmetry-preserving phase and a supersymmetry-broken phase, previously found at the planar level, becomes a smooth crossover in the double scaling limit. Accordingly, the supersymmetry is always broken spontaneously as its order parameter stays nonzero for the whole region of the coupling constant. Coincidence of the result with the unitary one-matrix model suggests that one-dimensional type 0 string theories partially correspond to the type IIA superstring theory. Our formulation naturally allows for introduction of an instanton chemical potential, and reveals the presence of a novel phase transition, possibly interpreted as condensation of instantons.

SUSY breaking by nonperturbative dynamics in a matrix model for 2D type IIA superstrings

We explicitly compute nonperturbative effects in a supersymmetric double-well matrix model corresponding to two-dimensional type IIA superstring theory on a nontrivial Ramond-Ramond background. We analytically determine the full one-instanton contribution to the free energy and one-point function, including all perturbative fluctuations around the one-instanton background. The leading order two-instanton contribution is determined as well. We see that supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by instantons, and that the breaking persists after taking a double scaling limit which realizes the type IIA theory from the matrix model. The result implies that spontaneous supersymmetry breaking occurs by nonperturbative dynamics in the target space of the IIA theory. Furthermore, we numerically determine the full nonperturbative effects by recursive evaluation of orthogonal polynomials. The free energy of the matrix model appears well-defined and finite even in the strongly coupled limit of the corresponding type IIA theory. The result might suggest a weakly coupled theory appearing as an S-dual to the two-dimensional type IIA superstring theory.

New critical behavior in a supersymmetric double-well matrix model

We compute various correlation functions at the planar level in a simple supersymmetric matrix model, whose scalar potential is in shape of a double-well. The model has infinitely degenerate vacua parametrized by filling fractions ν_\pm representing the numbers of matrix eigenvalues around the two minima of the double-well. The computation is done for general filling fractions corresponding to general two-cut solutions for the eigenvalue distribution. The model is mapped to the O(n) model on a random surface with n=-2, and some sector of the model is described by two-dimensional quantum gravity with c=-2 matter or (2,1) minimal string theory. For the other sector in which such description is not possible, we find new critical behavior of powers of logarithm for correlation functions. We regard the matrix model as a supersymmetric analog of the Penner model, and discuss correspondence of the matrix model to two-dimensional type IIA superstring theory from the viewpoint of symmetry and spectrum. In particular, single-trace operators in the matrix model are naturally interpreted as vertex operators in the type IIA theory. Also, the result of the correlation functions implies that the corresponding type IIA theory has a nontrivial Ramond-Ramond background.

Non-perturbative construction of 2D and 4D supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with 8 supercharges

In this paper, we consider two-dimensional N=(4,4) supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory and deform it by a mass parameter M with keeping all supercharges. We further add another mass parameter m in a manner to respect two of the eight supercharges and put the deformed theory on a two-dimensional square lattice, on which the two supercharges are exactly preserved. The flat directions of scalar fields are stabilized due to the mass deformations, which gives discrete minima representing fuzzy spheres. We show in the perturbation theory that the lattice continuum limit can be taken without any fine tuning. Around the trivial minimum, this lattice theory serves as a non-perturbative definition of two-dimensional N=(4,4) SYM theory. We also discuss that the same lattice theory realizes four-dimensional N = 2 U(k) SYM on R^2 x (Fuzzy R^2) around the minimum of k-coincident fuzzy spheres.

Recent progress of lattice and non-lattice super Yang-Mills

We report recent progress of non-perturbative formulation of supersymmetric Yang-Mills. Although lattice formulations of two-dimensional theories which are fine tuning free to all order in perturbation theory are known for almost ten years, however, there were only few evidence for the validity at non-perturbative level. In this talk we argue that most numerical studies so far do not capture the physics in continuum, and add new evidence that lattice formulation works at non-perturbatively. We further point out that, by combining two-dimensional lattice and matrix model techniques inspired by D-brane dynamics in superstring theory, a non-perturbative formulation of the four-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, which is free from the fine tuning at least to all order in perturbation theory, is obtained.

Systematic study of the SO(10) symmetry breaking vacua in the matrix model for type IIB superstrings

We study the properties of the space-time that emerges dynamically from the matrix model for type IIB superstrings in ten dimensions. We calculate the free energy and the extent of space-time using the Gaussian expansion method up to the third order. Unlike previous works, we study the SO(d) symmetric vacua with all possible values of d within the range $2 \le d \le 7$, and observe clear indication of plateaus in the parameter space of the Gaussian action, which is crucial for the results to be reliable. The obtained results indeed exhibit systematic dependence on d, which turns out to be surprisingly similar to what was observed recently in an analogous work on the six-dimensional version of the model. In particular, we find the following properties: i) the extent in the shrunken directions is given by a constant, which does not depend on d; ii) the ten-dimensional volume of the Euclidean space-time is given by a constant, which does not depend on d except for d = 2; iii) The free energy takes the minimum value at d = 3. Intuitive understanding of these results is given by using the low-energy effective theory and some Monte Carlo results.

Two-dimensional lattice for four-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills

We construct a lattice formulation of a mass-deformed two-dimensional N=(8,8) super Yang-Mills theory with preserving two supercharges exactly. Gauge fields are represented by compact unitary link variables, and the exact supercharges on the lattice are nilpotent up to gauge transformations and SU(2)_R rotations. Due to the mass deformation, the lattice model is free from the vacuum degeneracy problem, which was encountered in earlier approaches, and flat directions of scalar fields are stabilized giving discrete minima representing fuzzy S^2. Around the trivial minimum, quantum continuum theory is obtained with no tuning, which serves a nonperturbative construction of the IIA matrix string theory. Moreover, around the minimum of k-coincident fuzzy spheres, four-dimensional N=4 U(k) super Yang-Mills theory with two commutative and two noncommutative directions emerges. In this theory, sixteen supersymmetries are broken by the mass deformation to two. Assuming the breaking is soft, we give a scenario leading to undeformed N=4 super Yang-Mills on R^4 without any fine tuning. As an evidence for the validity of the assumption, some computation of 1-loop radiative corrections is presented.

A Nonperturbative Proposal for Nonabelian Tensor Gauge Theory and Dynamical Quantum Yang-Baxter Maps

We propose a nonperturbative approach to nonabelian two-form gauge theory. We formulate the theory on a lattice in terms of plaquette as fundamental dynamical variable, and assign U(N) Chan-Paton colors at each boundary link. We show that, on hypercubic lattices, such colored plaquette variables constitute Yang-Baxter maps, where holonomy is characterized by certain dynamical deformation of quantum Yang-Baxter equations. Consistent dimensional reduction to Wilson's lattice gauge theory singles out unique compactness condition. We study a class of theories where the compactness condition is solved by Lax pair ansatz. We find that, in naive classical continuum limit, these theories recover Lorentz invariance but have degrees of freedom that scales as N^2 at large N. This implies that nontrivial quantum continuum limit must be sought for. We demonstrate that, after dimensional reduction, these theories are reduced to Wilson's lattice gauge theory. We also show that Wilson surfaces are well-defined physical observables without ordering ambiguity. Utilizing lattice strong coupling expansion, we compute partition function and correlation functions of the Wilson surfaces. We discover that, at large $N$ limit, the character expansion coefficients exhibit large-order behavior growing faster than exponential, in striking contrast to Wilson's lattice gauge theory. This hints a hidden, weakly coupled theory dual to the proposed tensor gauge theory. We finally discuss relevance of our study to topological quantum order in strongly correlated systems.

Spontaneous supersymmetry breaking in matrix models from the viewpoints of localization and Nicolai mapping

In the previous work, it was shown that, in supersymmetric (matrix) discretized quantum mechanics, inclusion of an external field twisting the boundary condition of fermions enables us to discuss spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry (SUSY) in the path-integral formalism in a well-defined way. In the present work, we continue investigating the same systems from the points of view of localization and Nicolai mapping. The localization is studied by changing of integration variables in the path integral, which is applicable whether or not SUSY is explicitly broken. We examine in detail how the integrand of the partition function with respect to the integral over the auxiliary field behaves as the auxiliary field vanishes, which clarifies a mechanism of the localization. In SUSY matrix models, we obtain a matrix-model generalization of the localization formula. In terms of eigenvalues of matrix variables, we observe that eigenvalues' dynamics is governed by balance of attractive force from the localization and repulsive force from the Vandermonde determinant. The approach of the Nicolai mapping works even in the presence of the external field. It enables us to compute the partition function of SUSY matrix models for finite N (N is the rank of matrices) with arbitrary superpotential at least in the leading nontrivial order of an expansion with respect to the small external field. We confirm the restoration of SUSY in the large-N limit of a SUSY matrix model with a double-well scalar potential observed in the previous work.

Spontaneous supersymmetry breaking in large-$N$ matrix models with slowly varying potential

We construct a class of matrix models, where supersymmetry (SUSY) is spontaneously broken at the matrix size $N$ infinite. The models are obtained by dimensional reduction of matrix-valued SUSY quantum mechanics. The potential of the models is slowly varying, and the large-$N$ limit is taken with the slowly varying limit. First, we explain our formalism, introducing an external field to detect spontaneous SUSY breaking, analogously to ordinary (bosonic) symmetry breaking. It is observed that SUSY is possibly broken even in systems in less than one-dimension, for example, discretized quantum mechanics with a finite number of discretized time steps. Then, we consider spontaneous SUSY breaking in the SUSY matrix models with slowly varying potential, where the external field is turned off after the large-$N$ and slowly varying limit, analogously to the thermodynamic limit in statistical systems. On the other hand, without taking the slowly varying limit, in the SUSY matrix model with a double-well potential whose SUSY is broken due to instantons for finite $N$, a number of supersymmetric behavior is explicitly seen at large $N$. It convinces us that the instanton effect disappears and the SUSY gets restored in the large-$N$ limit.

T-duality of ZZ-brane

We examine how nonperturbative effects in string theory are transformed under the T-duality in its nonperturbative framework by analyzing the c=1/2 noncritical string theory as a simplest example. We show that in the T-dual theory they also take the form of exp(-S_0/g_s) in the leading order and that the instanton actions S_0 of the dual ZZ-branes are exactly the same as those in the original c=1/2 string theory. Furthermore we present formulas for coefficients of exp(-S_0/g_s) in the dual theory.

Two-Dimensional Compact N=(2,2) Lattice Super Yang-Mills Theory with Exact Supersymmetry

We construct two-dimensional N=(2,2) lattice super Yang-Mills theory, where the gauge and Higgs fields are all represented by U(N) compact variables, with keeping one exact supercharge along the line of the papers [1,2,3]. Interestingly, requirements of the exact supersymmetry as well as of the compact gauge and Higgs fields lead to the gauge group U(N) rather than SU(N). As a result of the perturbative renormalization argument, the model is shown to flow to the target continuum theory without any fine-tuning. Different from the case of noncompact Higgs fields, the path integral along the flat directions is well-defined in this model.

Gaussian expansion analysis of a matrix model with the spontaneous breakdown of rotational symmetry

Recently the gaussian expansion method has been applied to investigate the dynamical generation of 4d space-time in the IIB matrix model, which is a conjectured nonperturbative definition of type IIB superstring theory in 10 dimensions. Evidence for such a phenomenon, which is associated with the spontaneous breaking of the SO(10) symmetry down to SO(4), has been obtained up to the 7-th order calculations. Here we apply the same method to a simplified model, which is expected to exhibit an analogous spontaneous symmetry breaking via the same mechanism as conjectured for the IIB matrix model. The results up to the 9-th order demonstrate a clear convergence, which allows us to unambiguously identify the actual symmetry breaking pattern by comparing the free energy of possible vacua and to calculate the extent of ``space-time'' in each direction.

Gaussian and Mean Field Approximations for Reduced 4D Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Integral

In this paper, we consider a reduced supersymmetric Yang-Mills integral with four supercharges by using a Gaussian approximation scheme and its improved version. We calculate the free energy and the expectation values of Polyakov loop and Wilson loop operators by extending the method employed in the bosonic case in the previous paper. Our results nicely match to the exact and the numerical results obtained before. The loop amplitudes exhibit good scaling behaviors similarly as in the bosonic case. The 't Hooft like large $N$ limit leads simple formulas for the case of the loop length smaller. Also, the Polyakov loop and the Wilson loop are computed for the case of the loop length sufficiently large, where we see that the behavior of the Wilson loop reproduces the result simulated for a few smaller values of $N$ at least qualitatively.
