Universal scaling of three-dimensional dimerized quantum antiferromagnets on bipartite lattices

Using the first principles quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations, we investigate the previously established universal scaling between the Néel temperature $T_N$ and the staggered magnetization density $M_s$ of three-dimensional (3D) dimerized quantum antiferromagnets. Particularly, the calculations are done on both the stacked honeycomb and the cubic lattices. In addition to simulating models with two types of antiferromagnetic couplings (bonds) like those examined in earlier studies, here a tunable parameter controlling the strength of third type of bond is introduced. Interestingly, while the data of models with two types of bonds obtained here fall on top of the universal scaling curves determined previously, the effects due to microscopic details do appear. Moreover, the most striking result suggested in our study is that with the presence of three kinds of bonds in the investigated models, the considered scaling relations between $T_N$ and $M_s$ can be classified by the coordinate number of the underlying lattice geometries. The findings presented here broaden the applicability of the associated classification schemes formerly discovered. In particular, these results are not only interesting from a theoretical point of view, but also can serve as useful guidelines for the relevant experiments.

Consistency check of charged hadron multiplicities and fragmentation functions in SIDIS

We derived the conditions on certain combinations of integrals of the fragmentation functions of pion using HERMES data of the sum for the charged pion multiplicities from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) off the deuteron target. In our derivation the nucleon parton distribution functions (PDFs) are assumed to be isospin SU(2) symmetric. Similar conditions have also been obtained for the fragmentation functions (FFs) of kaon by the sum of charged kaon multiplicities as well. We have chosen several FFs to study the impact of those conditions we have derived. Among those FFs, only that produced in the nonlocal chiral-quark model (NL$χ$QM) constantly satisfy the conditions. Furthermore, the ratios of the strange PDFs $S(x)$ and the nonstrange PDFs $Q(x,Q^2)$ extracted from the charged pion and kaon multiplicities differ from each other significantly. Finally, we demonstrate that the HERMES pion multiplicity data is unlikely to be compatible with the two widely-used PDFs, namely CTEQ6M and NNPDF3.0.

Real-time dynamics of open quantum spin systems driven by dissipative processes

We study the real-time evolution of large open quantum spin systems in two spatial dimensions, whose dynamics is entirely driven by a dissipative coupling to the environment. We consider different dissipative processes and investigate the real-time evolution from an ordered phase of the Heisenberg or XY-model towards a disordered phase at late times, disregarding unitary Hamiltonian dynamics. The corresponding Kossakowski-Lindblad equation is solved via an efficient cluster algorithm. We find that the symmetry of the dissipative process determines the time scales which govern the approach towards a new equilibrium phase at late times. Most notably, we find a slow equilibration if the dissipative process conserves any of the magnetization Fourier modes. In these cases, the dynamics can be interpreted as a diffusion process of the conserved quantity.

Real-time simulation of dissipation-driven quantum systems

We set up a real-time path integral to study the evolution of quantum systems driven in real-time completely by the coupling of the system to the environment. For specifically chosen interactions, this can be interpreted as measurements being performed on the system. For a spin-1/2 system, in particular, when the measurement results are averaged over, the resulting sign problem completely disappears, and the system can be simulated with an efficient cluster algorithm.

Real-time simulation of non-equilibrium transport of magnetization in large open quantum spin systems driven by dissipation

Using quantum Monte Carlo, we study the non-equilibrium transport of magnetization in large open strongly correlated quantum spin $\frac{1}{2}$ systems driven by purely dissipative processes that conserve the uniform or staggered magnetization. We prepare both a low-temperature Heisenberg ferromagnet and an antiferromagnet in two parts of the system that are initially isolated from each other. We then bring the two subsystems in contact and study their real-time dissipative dynamics for different geometries. The flow of the uniform or staggered magnetization from one part of the system to the other is described by a diffusion equation that can be derived analytically.

Hyperon Electromagnetic Properties in Two-Flavor Chiral Perturbation Theory

The pion mass dependence of hyperon electromagnetic properties is determined using two-flavor heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. Specifically we compute chiral corrections to the charge radii, magnetic moments, and magnetic radii of the spin one-half hyperons, as well as the charge radii, magnetic moments, magnetic radii, electric quadrupole moments, and quadrupole radii of the spin three-half hyperons. Results for the nucleon and delta are also included. Efficacy of the two-flavor theory is investigated by analyzing the role played by virtual kaons. For the electromagnetic properties of spin one-half hyperons, kaon loop contributions are shown to be well described by terms analytic in the pion mass squared. Similarly kaon contributions to the magnetic moments of spin three-half hyperons are well described in the two-flavor theory. The remaining electromagnetic properties of spin three-half resonances can be described in two-flavor chiral perturbation theory, however, this description fails just beyond the physical pion mass. For the case of experimentally known hyperon magnetic moments and charge radii, we demonstrate that chiral corrections are under reasonable control, in contrast to the behavior of these observables in the three-flavor chiral expansion. The formulae we derive are ideal for performing the pion mass extrapolation of lattice QCD data obtained at the physical strange quark mass.

Kaon Thresholds and Two-Flavor Chiral Expansions for Hyperons

Two-flavor chiral expansions provide a useful perturbative framework to study hadron properties. Such expansions should exhibit marked improvement over the conventional three-flavor chiral expansion. Although one can theoretically formulate two-flavor theories for the various hyperon multiplets, the nearness of kaon thresholds can seriously undermine the effectiveness of the perturbative expansion in practice. We investigate the importance of virtual kaon thresholds on hyperon properties, specifically their masses and isovector axial charges. Using a three-flavor expansion that includes SU(3) breaking effects, we uncover the underlying expansion parameter governing the description of virtual kaon thresholds. For spin-half hyperons, this expansion parameter is quite small. Consequently virtual kaon contributions are well described in the two-flavor theory by terms analytic in the pion mass-squared. For spin three-half hyperons, however, one is closer to the kaon production threshold, and the expansion parameter is not as small. Breakdown of SU(2) chiral perturbation theory is shown to arise from a pole in the expansion parameter associated with the kaon threshold. Estimating higher-order corrections to the expansion parameter is necessary to ascertain whether the two-flavor theory of spin three-half hyperons remains perturbative. We find that, despite higher-order corrections, there is a useful perturbative expansion for the masses and isovector axial charges of both spin-half and spin three-half hyperons.
