Feshbach resonances and their interaction in light scattering off photonic crystal slabs

The concept of Feshbach resonances developed for quantum mechanical scattering is applied in the analysis of classical light scattering off photonic crystal slabs. It is shown that this concept can be realized almost perfectly in these systems. As an application guided-mode resonances in the grating waveguide structure (GWS) are studied in detail. Using simple resonance dominance approximation the characteristic properties of isolated Feshbach resonances in light scattering are exhibited. Formation and interaction of overlapping resonances are investigated. The relevant parameters of the GWS are identified which control the shape of the reflectivity of interacting resonances as well as the enhancement of the electromagnetic field. The differences in the properties of TE and TM resonances is emphasized for both isolated and interacting resonances.

Topological Concepts in Gauge Theories

In these lecture notes, an introduction to topological concepts and methods in studies of gauge field theories is presented. The three paradigms of topological objects, the Nielsen-Olesen vortex of the abelian Higgs model, the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole of the non-abelian Higgs model and the instanton of Yang-Mills theory, are discussed. The common formal elements in their construction are emphasized and their different dynamical roles are exposed. The discussion of applications of topological methods to Quantum Chromodynamics focuses on confinement. An account is given of various attempts to relate this phenomenon to topological properties of Yang-Mills theory. The lecture notes also include an introduction to the underlying concept of homotopy with applications from various areas of physics.

Compact Variables and Singular Fields in QCD

Subject of our investigations is QCD formulated in terms of physical degrees of freedom. Starting from the Faddeev-Popov procedure, the canonical formulation of QCD is derived for static gauges. Particular emphasis is put on obstructions occurring when implementing gauge conditions and on the concomitant emergence of compact variables and singular fields. A detailed analysis of non-perturbative dynamics associated with such exceptional field configurations within Coulomb- and axial gauge is described. We present evidence that compact variables generate confinement-like phenomena in both gauges and point out the deficiencies in achieving a satisfactory non-perturbative treatment concerning all variables. Gauge fixed formulations are shown to constitute also a useful framework for phenomenological studies. Phenomenological insights into the dynamics of Polyakov loops and monopoles in confined and deconfined phases are presented within axial gauge QCD
