Covert symmetries in the neutrino mass matrix

The flavour neutrino puzzle is often addressed by considering neutrino mass matrices $m$ with a certain number of vanishing entries ($m_{ij}=0$ for some values of the indices), since a reduction in the number of free parameters increases the predictive power. Symmetries that can enforce textures zero can also enforce a more general type of conditions $f(m_{ij})=0$ with $f$ some function of the matrix elements $m_{ij}$. In this case $m$ can have all entries non-vanishing with no reduction in its predictive power. We classify all generation-dependent $U(1)$ symmetries which, in the presence of two leptonic Higgs doublets, can reduce the number of independent high-energy parameters of type-I seesaw to the minimum number compatible with non-vanishing neutrino mixings and CP violation. These symmetries are broken above the scale where the effective operator is generated and can thus remain covert, in the sense that no explicit evidence of the symmetry can be read off the neutrino mass matrix, and different symmetries can give rise to the same low-energy structure. We find that only two cases are viable: one yields a structure with two zero-textures already considered in the literature, the other has no zero-textures and has never been considered before. It predicts normal ordering, a lightest neutrino mass $ \sim 10$ meV, a Dirac phase $δ\sim \frac{3π}{2}$ and definite values for the Majorana phases.

Axion-electron decoupling in nucleophobic axion models

The strongest upper bounds on the axion mass come from astrophysical observations like the neutrino burst duration of SN1987A, which depends on the axion couplings to nucleons, or the white-dwarf cooling rates and red-giant evolution, which involve the axion-electron coupling. It has been recently argued that in variants of DFSZ models with generation-dependent Peccei-Quinn charges an approximate axion-nucleon decoupling can occur, strongly relaxing the SN1987A bound. However, as in standard DFSZ models, the axion remains in general coupled to electrons, unless an ad hoc cancellation is engineered. Here we show that axion-electron decoupling can be implemented without extra tunings in DFSZ-like models with three Higgs doublets. Remarkably, the numerical value of the quark mass ratio $m_u/m_d\sim 1/2$ is crucial to open up this possibility.

Towards a complete $Δ(27) \times SO(10)$ SUSY GUT

We propose a renormalisable model based on $Δ(27)$ family symmetry with an $SO(10)$ grand unified theory (GUT) leading to a novel form of spontaneous geometrical CP violation. The symmetries, including $Δ(27)$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{9} \times \mathbb{Z}_{12} \times \mathbb{Z}_{4}^{R}$, are broken close to the GUT breaking scale to yield the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with the standard R-parity. $SO(10)$ is broken via $SU(5)$ with doublet-triplet splitting achieved by a version of the Dimopoulos-Wilczek (missing VEV) mechanism. Low-scale Yukawa structure is dictated by the coupling of matter to $ Δ(27) $ antitriplets $ \barϕ $ whose VEVs are aligned in the CSD3 directions by the superpotential. Light physical Majorana neutrinos masses emerge from a specific implementation of the seesaw mechanism within $SO(10)$. The model predicts a normal neutrino mass hierarchy with the best-fit lightest neutrino mass $ m_1 = 0.13 $ meV and the PMNS mixing parameters $θ^l_{13} \approx 8.35^{\circ}$, $θ^l_{12}\approx 34^{\circ}$, $θ^l_{23}\approx 43^{\circ}$ and an oscillation phase $δ^l\approx -90^{\circ}$.

Testing constrained sequential dominance models of neutrinos

Constrained sequential dominance (CSD) is a natural framework for implementing the see-saw mechanism of neutrino masses which allows the mixing angles and phases to be accurately predicted in terms of relatively few input parameters. We analyze a class of CSD($n$) models where, in the flavour basis, two right-handed neutrinos are dominantly responsible for the "atmospheric" and "solar" neutrino masses with Yukawa couplings to $(ν_e, ν_μ, ν_τ)$ proportional to $(0,1,1)$ and $(1,n,n-2)$, respectively, where $n$ is a positive integer. These coupling patterns may arise in indirect family symmetry models based on $A_4$. With two right-handed neutrinos, using a $χ^2$ test, we find a good agreement with data for CSD(3) and CSD(4) where the entire PMNS mixing matrix is controlled by a single phase $η$, which takes simple values, leading to accurate predictions for mixing angles and the magnitude of the oscillation phase $|δ_{CP}|$. We carefully study the perturbing effect of a third "decoupled" right-handed neutrino, leading to a bound on the lightest physical neutrino mass $m_1 \lesssim 1$ meV for the viable cases, corresponding to a normal neutrino mass hierarchy. We also discuss a direct link between the oscillation phase $δ_{CP} $ and leptogenesis in CSD($n$) due to the same see-saw phase $η$ appearing in both the neutrino mass matrix and leptogenesis.
