Large $t\to cZ$ as a Sign of Vector-Like Quarks in Light of the $W$ Mass

The rare flavour changing top quark decay $t\to cZ$ is a clear sign of new physics and experimentally very interesting due to the huge number of top quarks produced at the LHC. However, there are few (viable) models which can generate a sizable branching ratio for $t\to cZ$ -- in fact vector-like quarks seem to be the only realistic option. In this paper, we investigate all three representations (under the Standard Model gauge group) of vector-like quarks ($U$, $Q_1$ and $Q_7$) that can generate a sizable branching ratio for $t\to cZ$ without violating bounds from $B$ physics. Importantly, these are exactly the three vector-like quarks which can lead to a sizable positive shift in the prediction for $W$ mass, via the couplings to the top quark also needed for a sizable Br($t\to cZ$). Calculating and using the one-loop matching of vector-like quarks on the Standard Model Effective Field Theory, we find that Br($t\to cZ$) can be of the order of $10^{-6}$, $10^{-5}$ and $10^{-4}$ for $U$, $Q_1$ and $Q_7$, respectively and that in all three cases the large $W$ mass measurement can be accommodated.

Renormalization group effects in astrophobic axion models

It has been recently pointed out that in certain axion models it is possible to suppress simultaneously both the axion couplings to nucleons and electrons, realising the so-called astrophobic axion scenarios, wherein the tight bounds from SN1987A and from stellar evolution of red giants and white dwarfs are greatly relaxed. So far, however, the conditions for realising astrophobia have only been set out in tree-level analyses. Here we study whether these conditions can still be consistently implemented once renormalization group effects are included in the running of axion couplings. We find that axion astrophobia keeps holding, albeit within fairly different parameter space regions, and we provide analytical insights into this result. Given that astrophobic axion models generally feature flavour violating axion couplings, we also assess the impact of renormalization group effects on axion-mediated flavour violating observables.

Stellar Evolution confronts Axion Models

Axion production from astrophysical bodies is a topic in continuous development, because of theoretical progress in the estimate of stellar emission rates and, especially, because of improved stellar observations. We carry out a comprehensive analysis of the most informative astrophysics data, revisiting the bounds on axion couplings to photons, nucleons and electrons, and reassessing the significance of various hints of anomalous stellar energy losses. We confront the performance of various theoretical constructions in accounting for these hints, while complying with the observational limits on axion couplings. We identify the most favorable models, and the regions in the mass/couplings parameter space which are preferred by the global fit. Finally, we scrutinize the discovery potential for such models at upcoming helioscopes, namely IAXO and its scaled versions.

Introducing tools to test Higgs interactions via $WW$ scattering I: one-loop calculations and renormalization in the HEFT

Effective field theories are useful tools to search for physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). However, effective theories can lead to non-unitary behavior with fastly growing amplitudes. This unphysical behavior may lead to large sensitivity to SM deviations, making necessary a unitarization of the amplitudes prior to a comparison with experiment. In the present work, we focus on all the processes entering the two-Higgs production by longitudinal $WW$ scattering: we perform a full one-loop calculation of all relevant processes, we determine the necessary counterterms in the on-shell scheme, and we study how the full inclusion of the gauge degrees of freedom modifies the previously computed masses and widths of the dynamical resonances arising from the unitarization process in the vector-isovector channel. Altogether, we are able to provide the technical tools that are needed to study the low-energy couplings in the Higgs effective theory under the requirements of unitarity and causality.

Covert symmetries in the neutrino mass matrix

The flavour neutrino puzzle is often addressed by considering neutrino mass matrices $m$ with a certain number of vanishing entries ($m_{ij}=0$ for some values of the indices), since a reduction in the number of free parameters increases the predictive power. Symmetries that can enforce textures zero can also enforce a more general type of conditions $f(m_{ij})=0$ with $f$ some function of the matrix elements $m_{ij}$. In this case $m$ can have all entries non-vanishing with no reduction in its predictive power. We classify all generation-dependent $U(1)$ symmetries which, in the presence of two leptonic Higgs doublets, can reduce the number of independent high-energy parameters of type-I seesaw to the minimum number compatible with non-vanishing neutrino mixings and CP violation. These symmetries are broken above the scale where the effective operator is generated and can thus remain covert, in the sense that no explicit evidence of the symmetry can be read off the neutrino mass matrix, and different symmetries can give rise to the same low-energy structure. We find that only two cases are viable: one yields a structure with two zero-textures already considered in the literature, the other has no zero-textures and has never been considered before. It predicts normal ordering, a lightest neutrino mass $ \sim 10$ meV, a Dirac phase $δ\sim \frac{3π}{2}$ and definite values for the Majorana phases.

Axion-electron decoupling in nucleophobic axion models

The strongest upper bounds on the axion mass come from astrophysical observations like the neutrino burst duration of SN1987A, which depends on the axion couplings to nucleons, or the white-dwarf cooling rates and red-giant evolution, which involve the axion-electron coupling. It has been recently argued that in variants of DFSZ models with generation-dependent Peccei-Quinn charges an approximate axion-nucleon decoupling can occur, strongly relaxing the SN1987A bound. However, as in standard DFSZ models, the axion remains in general coupled to electrons, unless an ad hoc cancellation is engineered. Here we show that axion-electron decoupling can be implemented without extra tunings in DFSZ-like models with three Higgs doublets. Remarkably, the numerical value of the quark mass ratio $m_u/m_d\sim 1/2$ is crucial to open up this possibility.

New physics in $b\to s\ell\ell$ transitions at one loop

We investigate new-physics contributions to $b\to s \ell\ell$ transitions in the context of an effective field theory extension of the Standard Model, including operator mixing at one loop. We identify the few scenarios where a single Wilson coefficient, $C/Λ^2 \sim 1/{\rm TeV}^2$, induces a substantial shift in the lepton flavour universality ratios $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ at one loop, while evading $Z$-pole precision tests, collider bounds, and other flavour constraints. Good fits to the present data are achieved by a left-handed current operator with quark-flavour indices $(2,2)$ or $(3,3)$, hitherto overlooked. Interestingly, the running of the Standard Model Yukawa matrices gives the dominant effect for these scenarios. We match the favoured effective-theory scenarios to minimal, single-mediator models, which are subject to additional stringent constraints. Notably, we recognise three viable instances of a leptoquark with one coupling to fermions only. If the anomalies were confirmed, it appears that one-loop explanations have good prospects of being directly tested at the LHC.

Axion-Higgs interplay in the two Higgs-doublet model

We study the Dine-Fischler-Srednicki (DFS) model in the light of the recent Higgs LHC results and electroweak precision data. The DFS model is a natural extension of the two-Higgs doublet model endowed with a Peccei-Quinn symmetry and leading to a physically acceptable axion. For generic couplings, the model reproduces the minimal Standard Model showing only tiny deviations (extreme decoupling scenario) whereas all additional degrees of freedom (with the exception of the axion) are very heavy. Recently, new corners of this model have been highlighted where it may exhibit enlarged global symmetries making the corresponding models technically natural (naturalness scenario). In some cases an additional Higgs could be present at the weak scale. In this case, the new light $0^+$ state would be accompanied by relatively light charged and neutral pseudoscalar Higgses. We will use the oblique corrections, particularly $Δρ$, to constrain the mass spectrum in this case. As a final result, we also work out the non-linear parametrization of the DFS model in the generic case where all scalars except the lightest Higgs and the axion have masses at or beyond the TeV scale.

Interpreting a 2 TeV resonance in WW scattering

A diboson excess has been observed ---albeit with very limited statistical significance--- in $WW$, $WZ$ and $ZZ$ final states at the LHC experiments using the accumulated 8 TeV data. Assuming that these signals are due to resonances resulting from an extended symmetry breaking sector in the standard model and exact custodial symmetry we determine using unitarization methods the values of the relevant low-energy constants in the corresponding effective Lagrangian. Unitarity arguments also predict the widths of these resonances. We introduce unitarized form factors to allow for a proper treatment of the resonances in Monte Carlo generators and a more precise comparison with experiment.

Unitarity and causality constraints in composite Higgs models

We study the scattering of longitudinally polarized W bosons in extensions of the Standard Model where anomalous Higgs couplings to gauge sector and higher order O(p^4) operators are considered. These new couplings with respect to the Standard Model should be thought as the low energy remnants of some new dynamics involving the electroweak symmetry breaking sector. By imposing unitarity and causality constraints on the WW scattering amplitudes we find relevant restrictions on the possible values of the new couplings and the presence of new resonances above 300 GeV. We investigate the properties of these new resonances and their experimental detectability. Custodial symmetry is assumed to be exact throughout and the calculation avoids using the Equivalence Theorem as much as possible.

Radiative corrections to WL WL scattering in composite Higgs models

The scattering of longitudinally polarized electroweak bosons is likely to play an important role in the elucidation of the fundamental nature of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking sector and in determining the Higgs interactions with this sector. In this paper, by making use of the Equivalence Theorem, we determine the renormalization properties of the electroweak effective theory parameters in a model with generic Higgs couplings to the W and Z bosons. When the couplings between the Higgs and the electroweak gauge bosons deviate from their Standard Model values, additional counterterms of O(p^4) in the usual chiral counting are required. We also determine in the same approximation the full radiative corrections to the WL WL->ZL ZL process in this type of models. Assuming custodial invariance, all the related processes can be easily derived from this amplitude.

Complementarity of Bs->mu+mu- and B-> K l+l- in New Physics searches

This year, LHC provided a very stringent bound on Br(Bs->mu+mu-), bringing it closer to the value predicted by the Standard Model (SM). Bs->mu+mu- was believed to be the golden mode at LHCb to find SUSY because a large enhancement was expected in the regime of moderate and large values of tanb. Other scenarios are still possible and a correlation with other decay channels is needed. We show that a complementary information on New Physics (NP) can be obtained model-indepedently from the B-> K l+l- decay mode. We provide a prediction Br(B-> K l+l-) based on the first lattice QCD results for all three relevant form factors, f0(q^2), f+(q^2) and fT(q^2). We were then able to provide the model-independent bounds on the complex couplings to scalar and pseudoscalr operators in the b->s sector.

Complementarity of the constraints on New Physics from B_s -> mu+ mu- and from B -> K l+l- decays

We discuss the advantages of combining the experimental bound on Br(B_s -> mu+ mu-) and the measured Br(B -> K l+l-) to get the model independent constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model. Since the two decays give complementary information, one can study not only the absolute values of the Wilson coefficients that are zero in the Standard Model, but also their phases. To identify the sector in which the new physics might appear, information about the shapes of the transverse asymmetries in B -> K* l+l- at low q^2's can be particularly useful. We also emphasize the importance of measuring the forward-backward asymmetry in B -> K l+l- decay at large q^2's.

Complete Anatomy of B -> K*ll and its angular distribution

We present a complete and optimal set of observables for the exclusive 4-body B meson decay B -> K*(->K pi) l+l- in the low dilepton mass region, that contains a maximal number of clean observables. This basis of observables is built in a systematic way. We show that all the previously defined observables and any observable that one can construct, can be expressed as a function of this basis. This set of observables contains all the information that can be extracted from the angular distribution in the cleanest possible way. We provide explicit expressions for the full and the uniangular distributions in terms of this basis. The conclusions presented here can be easily extended to the large-q^2 region. We study the sensitivity of the observables to right-handed currents and scalars. Finally, we present for the first time all the symmetries of the full distribution including massive terms and scalar contributions.

Natural SUSY and Kaon Mixing in view of recent results from Lattice QCD

Lattice results are available for Delta S=2 matrix elements for the first time in full QCD, which improve considerably the status of hadronic uncertainties in K-Kbar mixing with respect to earlier phenomenological studies. Using an average of the ETMC and RBC results, we analyze epsilonK in Natural SUSY. This scenario arises as a consistent BSM framework after the latest results from the LHC. The analysis is improved with respect to previous studies including next-to-leading order matching conditions of order (alpha_s)^3. We derive new bounds for SUSY mass insertions in the scenario with a light third generation and study the implications for squark and gluino masses, compared with direct searches at the LHC. Assuming natural values for the flavor violating SUSY couplings of both chiralities, we find that the sbottom must be heavier than 3 TeV for a gluino mass up to 10 TeV. In this scenario no natural values for squark and gluino masses can satisfy the flavor bounds.

Pseudo Goldstone Bosons Phenomenology in Minimal Walking Technicolor

We construct the non-linear realized Lagrangian for the Goldstone Bosons associated to the breaking pattern of SU(4) to SO(4). This pattern is expected to occur in any Technicolor extension of the standard model featuring two Dirac fermions transforming according to real representations of the underlying gauge group. We concentrate on the Minimal Walking Technicolor quantum number assignments with respect to the standard model symmetries. We demonstrate that for, any choice of the quantum numbers, consistent with gauge and Witten anomalies the spectrum of the pseudo Goldstone Bosons contains electrically doubly charged states which can be discovered at the Large Hadron Collider.

A Phenomenological Study of Bottom Quark Fragmentation in Top Quark Decay

Top-quark physics is one of the main fields of investigation at the Tevatron accelerator and, ultimately, at the LHC. We perform a phenomenological analysis of ttbar events at hadron colliders, with a focus on observables relying on bottom-quark fragmentation in top-quark decay. In particular, we investigate the B-lepton invariant-mass distribution in the dilepton channel and give an estimate of the contribution of bottom fragmentation to the Monte Carlo uncertainty on the top-quark mass reconstruction.

Exploring the flavour structure of the MSSM with rare K decays

We present an extensive analysis of rare K decays, in particular of the two neutrino modes K+->pi+ nu nu-bar and KL->pi0 nu nu-bar, in the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. We analyse the expectations for the branching ratios of these modes, both within the restrictive framework of the minimal flavour violation hypothesis and within a more general framework with new sources of flavour-symmetry breaking. In both scenarios, the information that can be extracted from precise measurements of the two neutrino modes turn out to be very useful in restricting the parameter space of the model, even after taking into account the possible information on the mass spectrum derived from high-energy colliders, and the constraints from B-physics experiments. In the presence of new sources of flavour-symmetry breaking, additional significant constraints on the model can be derived also from the two KL->pi0 l+l- modes.

Light-quark Loops in K->pi nu nu

We present a comprehensive analysis of the contributions to K->pi nu nu decays not described by the leading dimension-six effective Hamiltonian. These include both dimension-eight four-fermion operators generated at the charm scale, and genuine long-distance contributions which can be described within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. We show that a consistent treatment of the latter contributions, which turn out to be the dominant effect, requires the introduction of new chiral operators already at O(GF^2 p^2). Using this new chiral Lagrangian, we analyze the long-distance structure of K->pi nu nu amplitudes at the one-loop level, and discuss the role of the dimension-eight operators in the matching between short- and long-distance components. From the numerical point of view, we find that these O(GF^2 LambdaQCD^2) corrections enhance the SM prediction of Br(K+->pi+ nu nu) by about 6%
