Electronic nematicity in URu2Si2 revisited

The nature of the hidden-order (HO) state in URu2Si2 remains one of the major unsolved issues in heavy-fermion physics. Recently, torque magnetometry, x-ray diffraction and elastoresistivity data have suggested that the HO phase transition at THO = 17.5 K is driven by electronic nematic effects. Here, we search for thermodynamic signatures of this purported structural instability using anisotropic thermal-expansion, YoungÅ› modulus, elastoresistivity and specific-heat measurements. In contrast to the published results, we find no evidence of a rotational symmetry-breaking in any of our data. Interestingly, our elastoresistivity measurements, which are in full agreement with published results, exhibit a Curie-Weiss divergence, which we however attribute to a volume and not to a symmetry-breaking effect. Finally, clear evidence for thermal fluctuations is observed in our heat-capacity data, from which we estimate the HO correlation length.

High-Pressure Evolution of the Specific Heat of a Strongly Underdoped Ba(Fe0.963Co0.037)As2 Iron-Based Superconductor

We report specific-heat experiments under the influence of high pressure on a strongly underdoped Co-substituted BaFe2As2 single crystal. This allows us to study the phase diagram of this iron pnictide superconductor with a bulk thermodynamic method and pressure as a clean control parameter. The data show large specific-heat anomalies at the superconducting transition temperature, which proves the bulk nature of pressure-induced superconductivity. The transitions in the specific heat are sharper than in resistivity, which demonstrates the necessity of employing bulk thermodynamic methods to explore the exact phase diagram of pressure-induced Fe-based superconductors. The Tc at optimal pressure and the superconducting condensation energy are found to be larger than in optimally Co-doped samples at ambient pressure, which we attribute to a weak pair breaking effect of the Co ions.

Multiband Superconductivity in KFe2As2: Evidence for one Isotropic and several Liliputian Energy Gaps

We report a detailed low-temperature thermodynamic investigation (heat capacity and magnetization) of the superconducting state of KFe2As2 for H || c axis. Our measurements reveal that the properties of KFe2As2 are dominated by a relatively large nodeless energy gap (Delta?0 = 1.9 kBTc) which excludes dx2-y2 symmetry. We prove the existence of several additional extremely small gaps (?Delta0 < 1.0 kBTc) that have a profound impact on the low-temperature and low-field behavior, similar to MgB2, CeCoIn5 and PrOs4Sb12. The zero-field heat capacity is analyzed in a realistic self-consistent 4-band BCS model which qualitatively reproduces the recent laser ARPES results of Okazaki et al. (Science 337 (2012) 1314). Our results show that extremely low-temperature measurements, i.e. T < 0.1 K, will be required in order to resolve the question of the existence of line nodes in this compound.

Decoupling between Field-instabilities of Antiferromagnetism and Pseudo-metamagnetism in Rh-doped CeRu2Si2 Kondo Lattice

Doping Kondo lattice system CeRu2Si2 with Rh-8% (Ce(Ru0.92Rh0.08)2Si2) leads to drastic consequences due to the mismatch of the lattice parameters between CeRu2Si2 and CeRh2Si2. A large variety of experiments clarifies the unusual properties of the ground state induced by the magnetic field from longitudinal antiferromagnetic (AF) mode at H = 0 to polarized paramagnetic phase in very high magnetic field. The separation between AF phase, paramagnetic phase and polarized paramagnetic phase varying with temperature, magnetic field and pressure is discussed on the basis of the experiments down to very low temperature. Similarities and differences between Rh and La substituted alloys are discussed with emphasis on the competition between transverse and longitudinal AF modes, and ferromagnetic fluctuations.

Field-induced Phenomena in Ferromagnetic Superconductors UCoGe and URhGe

We review our recent studies on ferromagnetic superconductors, UGe2, URhGe and UCoGe, where the spin-triplet state with the so-called equal spin pairing is realized. We focus on experimental results of URhGe and UCoGe in which the superconductivity occurs already at ambient pressure. The huge upper critical field Hc2 on UCoGe for the field along the hard magnetization axis (b-axis) is confirmed by the AC susceptibility measurements by the fine tuning of field angle. Contrary to the huge Hc2 along the hard-magnetization axis, Hc2 along the easy-magnetization axis (c-axis) is relatively small in value. However, the initial slope of Hc2, namely dHc2/dT (H -> 0) both in UCoGe and in URhGe indicates the large value, which can be explained by the magnetic domain effect detected in the magnetization measurements. The specific heat measurements using a high quality single crystal of UCoGe demonstrate the bulk superconductivity, which is extended under magnetic field for the field along c-axis.

Properties of Ferromagnetic Superconductors

Thanks to the discovery in the last decade of three uranium ferromagnetic superconductors, UGe2, URhGe and UCoGe, the fascinating aspects of the interplay between the triplet state of Cooper pairing and ferromagnetism have emerged. Furthermore, as the ferromagnetic properties in the normal state are quite different with respect to the proximity of the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic instabilities, the feedback with the coexistence of superconductivity gives rise to quite different boundaries in pressure and magnetic field. Special attention is given on the location of the materials with respect to the tricriticality and on the reinforcement of superconductivity in a transverse field response with respect to the direction of the ferromagnetic sublattice magnetization. The other facts of the interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity is briefly mentioned.

Superconductivity Reinforced by Magnetic Field and the Magnetic Instability in Uranium Ferromagnets

We review our recent results on ferromagnetic superconductors, URhGe and UCoGe. High quality single crystals of both compounds were successfully grown. The specific heat shows a clear jump related to the superconducting transition in UCoGe. The finite values of C/T at 0K are discussed in terms of the self-induced vortex state and the value of the ordered moment. With increasing fields for H // b-axis in URhGe, the jump of thermal expansion increases and shifts to lower temperature. The re-entrant and S-shaped superconducting phases for URhGe and UCoGe respectively are explained by the unusual field dependence of the effective mass, which is induced by the ferromagnetic instability when the field is applied along the hard magnetization b-axis. The magnetic fluctuations are very sensitive to the field orientation. This is reflected in the Hc2 and the anisotropy of the effective mass.

A Ni-based Superconductor: the Heusler Compound ZrNi$_2$Ga

This work reports on the novel Heusler superconductor ZrNi2Ga. Compared to other nickel-based superconductors with Heusler structure, ZrNi2Ga exhibits a relatively high superconducting transition temperature of Tc=2.9 K and an upper critical field of 1.5 T. Electronic structure calculations show that this relatively high transition temperature is caused by a van Hove singularity, which leads to an enhanced density of states at the Fermi energy. The van Hove singularity originates from a higher order valence instability at the L-point in the electronic structure. The enhanced density of states at the Fermi level was confirmed by specific heat and susceptibility measurements. Although many Heusler compounds are ferromagnetic, our measurements of ZrNi2Ga indicate a paramagnetic state above Tc and could not reveal any traces of magnetic order down to temperatures of at least 0.35 K. We investigated in detail the superconducting state with specific heat, magnetization, and resistivity measurements. The resulting data show the typical behavior of a conventional, weakly coupled BCS (s-wave) superconductor.

Large anisotropic uniaxial pressure dependencies of Tc in single crystalline Ba(Fe0.92Co0.08)2As2

Using high-resolution dilatometry, we study the thermodynamic response of the lattice parameters to superconducting order in a self-flux grown Ba(Fe0.92Co0.08)2As2 single crystal. The uniaxial pressure dependencies of the critical temperature of Tc, calculated using our thermal expansion and specific heat data via the Ehrenfest relation, are found to be quite large and very anisotropic (dTc/dpa = 3.1(1) K/GPa and dTc/dpc = - 7.0(2) K/GPa). Our results show that there is a strong coupling of the c/a ratio to superconducting order, which demonstrates that Tc is far from the optimal value. A surprising similarity with the uniaxial pressure effects in several other layered superconductors is discussed.
