On representations of Gal(Q‾/Q)\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q}), GT^\widehat{GT} and Aut(F^2)\mathrm{Aut}(\hat{F}_2)

By work of Belyi, the absolute Galois group GQ=Gal(Q‾/Q)G_{\mathbb{Q}}=\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q}) of the field Q\mathbb{Q} of rational numbers can be embedded into A=Aut(F2^)A=\mathrm{Aut}(\widehat{F_2}), the automorphism group of the free profinite group F2^\widehat{F_2} on two generators. The image of GQG_{\mathbb{Q}} lies inside GT^\widehat{GT}, the Grothendieck-Teichmüller group. While it is known that every abelian representation of GQG_{\mathbb{Q}} can be extended to GT^\widehat{GT}, Lochak and Schneps put forward the challenge of constructing irreducible non-abelian representations of GT^\widehat{GT}. We do this virtually, namely by showing that a rich class of arithmetically defined representations of GQG_{\mathbb{Q}} can be extended to finite index subgroups of GT^\widehat{GT}. This is achieved, in fact, by extending these representations all the way to finite index subgroups of A=Aut(F2^)A=\mathrm{Aut}(\widehat{F_2}). We do this by developing a profinite version of the work of Grunewald and Lubotzky, which provided a rich collection of representations for the discrete group Aut(Fd)\mathrm{Aut}(F_d).

Galois structure of the holomorphic differentials of curves

Let XX be a smooth projective geometrically irreducible curve over a perfect field kk of positive characteristic pp. Suppose GG is a finite group acting faithfully on XX such that GG has non-trivial cyclic Sylow pp-subgroups. We show that the decomposition of the space of holomorphic differentials of XX into a direct sum of indecomposable k[G]k[G]-modules is uniquely determined by the lower ramification groups and the fundamental characters of closed points of XX that are ramified in the cover X→X/GX\to X/G. We apply our method to determine the PSL(2,Fℓ)\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{F}_\ell)-module structure of the space of holomorphic differentials of the reduction of the modular curve X(ℓ)\mathcal{X}(\ell) modulo pp when pp and ℓ\ell are distinct odd primes and the action of PSL(2,Fℓ)\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{F}_\ell) on this reduction is not tamely ramified. This provides some non-trivial congruences modulo appropriate maximal ideals containing pp between modular forms arising from isotypic components with respect to the action of PSL(2,Fℓ)\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{F}_\ell) on X(ℓ)\mathcal{X}(\ell).

The geometry of finite dimensional algebras with vanishing radical square

Let ΛΛ be a basic finite dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field, with the property that the square of the Jacobson radical JJ vanishes. We determine the irreducible components of the module variety Modd(Λ)\text{Mod}_{\bf d}(Λ) for any dimension vector d\bf d. Our description leads to a count of the components in terms of the underlying Gabriel quiver. A closed formula for the number of components when ΛΛ is local extends existing counts for the two-loop quiver to quivers with arbitrary finite sets of loops. For any algebra ΛΛ with J2=0J^2 = 0, our criteria for identifying the components of Modd(Λ)\text{Mod}_{\bf d}(Λ) permit us to characterize the modules parametrized by the individual irreducible components. Focusing on such a component, we explore generic properties of the corresponding modules by establishing a geometric bridge between the algebras with zero radical square on one hand and their stably equivalent hereditary counterparts on the other. The bridge links certain closed subvarieties of Grassmannians parametrizing the modules with fixed top over the two types of algebras. By way of this connection, we transfer results of Kac and Schofield from the hereditary case to algebras of Loewy length 22. Finally, we use the transit of information to show that any algebra of Loewy length 22 which enjoys the dense orbit property in the sense of Chindris, Kinser and Weyman has finite representation type.

Inverse Problems for deformation rings

Let W\mathcal{W} be a complete local commutative Noetherian ring with residue field kk of positive characteristic pp. We study the inverse problem for the versal deformation rings RW(Γ,V)R_{\mathcal{W}}(Γ,V) relative to W\mathcal{W} of finite dimensional representations VV of a profinite group ΓΓ over kk. We show that for all pp and n≥1n \ge 1, the ring W[[t]]/(pnt,t2)\mathcal{W}[[t]]/(p^n t,t^2) arises as a universal deformation ring. This ring is not a complete intersection if pnW≠{0}p^n\mathcal{W}\neq\{0\}, so we obtain an answer to a question of M. Flach in all characteristics. We also study the `inverse inverse problem' for the ring W[[t]]/(pnt,t2)\mathcal{W}[[t]]/(p^n t,t^2); this is to determine all pairs (Γ,V)(Γ, V) such that RW(Γ,V)R_{\mathcal{W}}(Γ,V) is isomorphic to this ring.

Universal deformation rings of modules for algebras of dihedral type of polynomial growth

Let k be an algebraically closed field, and let Λ be an algebra of dihedral type of polynomial growth as classified by Erdmann and Skowroński. We describe all finitely generated Λ-modules V whose stable endomorphism rings are isomorphic to k and determine their universal deformation rings R(Λ,V). We prove that only three isomorphism types occur for R(Λ,V): k, k[[t]]/(t^2) and k[[t]].

Universal deformation rings of modules over Frobenius algebras

Let kk be a field, and let ΛΛ be a finite dimensional kk-algebra. We prove that if ΛΛ is a self-injective algebra, then every finitely generated ΛΛ-module VV whose stable endomorphism ring is isomorphic to kk has a universal deformation ring R(Λ,V)R(Λ,V) which is a complete local commutative Noetherian kk-algebra with residue field kk. If ΛΛ is also a Frobenius algebra, we show that R(Λ,V)R(Λ,V) is stable under taking syzygies. We investigate a particular Frobenius algebra Λ0Λ_0 of dihedral type, as introduced by Erdmann, and we determine R(Λ0,V)R(Λ_0,V) for every finitely generated Λ0Λ_0-module VV whose stable endomorphism ring is isomorphic to kk.

Deformation rings which are not local complete intersections

We study the inverse problem for the versal deformation rings R(Γ,V)R(Γ,V) of finite dimensional representations VV of a finite group ΓΓ over a field kk of positive characteristic pp. This problem is to determine which complete local commutative Noetherian rings with residue field kk can arise up to isomorphism as such R(Γ,V)R(Γ,V). We show that for all integers n≥1n \ge 1 and all complete local commutative Noetherian rings W\mathcal{W} with residue field kk, the ring W[[t]]/(pnt,t2)\mathcal{W}[[t]]/(p^n t,t^2) arises in this way. This ring is not a local complete intersection if pnW≠{0}p^n\mathcal{W}\neq\{0\}, so we obtain an answer to a question of M. Flach in all characteristics.

Dihedral blocks with two simple modules

Let kk be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2, and let GG be a finite group. Suppose BB is a block of kGkG with dihedral defect groups such that there are precisely two isomorphism classes of simple BB-modules. The description by Erdmann of the quiver and relations of the basic algebra of BB is usually only given up to a certain parameter cc which is either 0 or 1. In this article, we show that c=0c=0 if there exists a central extension G^\hat{G} of GG by a group of order 2 together with a block B^\hat{B} of kG^k\hat{G} with generalized quaternion defect groups such that BB is contained in the image of B^\hat{B} under the natural surjection from kG^k\hat{G} onto kGkG. As a special case, we obtain that c=0c=0 if G=PGL2(Fq)G=\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q) for some odd prime power qq and BB is the principal block of kPGL2(Fq)k \mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q).

Universal deformation rings and dihedral blocks with two simple modules

Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2, and let W be the ring of infinite Witt vectors over k. Suppose G is a finite group and B is a block of kG with a dihedral defect group D such that there are precisely two isomorphism classes of simple B-modules. We determine the universal deformation ring R(G,V) for every finitely generated kG-module V which belongs to B and whose stable endomorphism ring is isomorphic to k. The description by Erdmann of the quiver and relations of the basic algebra of B is usually only determined up to a certain parameter c which is either 0 or 1. We show that R(G,V) is isomorphic to a subquotient ring of WD for all V as above if and only if c=0, giving an answer to a question raised by the first author and Chinburg in this case. Moreover, we prove that c=0 if and only if B is Morita equivalent to a principal block.

Universal deformation rings and generalized quaternion defect groups

We determine the universal deformation ring R(G,V) of certain mod 2 representations V of a finite group G which belong to a 2-modular block of G whose defect groups are isomorphic to a generalized quaternion group D. We show that for these V, a question raised by the author and Chinburg concerning the relation of R(G,V) to D has an affirmative answer. We also show that R(G,V) is a complete intersection even though R(G/N,V) need not be for certain normal subgroups N of G which act trivially on V.

Universal deformation rings for the symmetric group S_5 and one of its double covers

Let S5S_5 denote the symmetric group on 5 letters, and let S^5\hat{S}_5 denote a non-trivial double cover of S5S_5 whose Sylow 2-subgroups are generalized quaternion. We determine the universal deformation rings R(S5,V)R(S_5,V) and R(S^5,V)R(\hat{S}_5,V) for each mod 2 representation VV of S5S_5 that belongs to the principal 2-modular block of S5S_5 and whose stable endomorphism ring is given by scalars when it is inflated to S^5\hat{S}_5. We show that for these VV, a question raised by the first author and Chinburg concerning the relation of the universal deformation ring of VV to the Sylow 2-subgroups of S5S_5 and S^5\hat{S}_5, respectively, has an affirmative answer.

Universal deformation rings for the symmetric group S_4

Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2, and let W be the ring of infinite Witt vectors over k. Let S_4 denote the symmetric group on 4 letters. We determine the universal deformation ring R(S_4,V) for every kS_4-module V which has stable endomorphism ring k and show that R(S_4,V) is isomorphic to either k, or W[t]/(t^2,2t), or the group ring W[Z/2]. This gives a positive answer in this case to a question raised by the first author and Chinburg whether the universal deformation ring of a representation of a finite group with stable endomorphism ring k is always isomorphic to a subquotient ring of the group ring over W of a defect group of the modular block associated to the representation.
