Schrödinger operators on the half-line with integrable complex potentials

In our previous work, we introduced the concept of a \emph{spectral pair} for a half-line Schrödinger operator with a \emph{complex} bounded potential $q$, serving as a substitute for the spectral measure in a non-self-adjoint setting. In this paper, we study the case of $q \in L^1(\mathbb{R}_+)$. We derive explicit formulas for the spectral pair in terms of the Jost solutions of a system of two equations naturally associated with the non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operator. A key component of our work, which is of independent interest, is the existence proof and analysis of these Jost solutions.

Asymptotic spectral properties of the Hilbert $L$-matrix

We study asymptotic spectral properties of the generalized Hilbert $L$-matrix \[ L_{n}(ν)=\left(\frac{1}{\max(i,j)+ν}\right)_{i,j=0}^{n-1}, \] for large order $n$. First, for general $ν\neq0,-1,-2,\dots$, we deduce the asymptotic distribution of eigenvalues of $L_{n}(ν)$ outside the origin. Second, for $ν>0$, asymptotic formulas for small eigenvalues of $L_{n}(ν)$ are derived. Third, in the classical case $ν=1$, we also prove asymptotic formulas for large eigenvalues of $L_{n}\equiv L_{n}(1)$. I particular, we obtain an asymptotic expansion of $\|L_{n}\|$ improving Wilf's formula for the best constant in truncated Hardy's inequality.

Non-self-adjoint Toeplitz matrices whose principal submatrices have real spectrum

We introduce and investigate a class of complex semi-infinite banded Toeplitz matrices satisfying the condition that the spectra of their principal submatrices accumulate onto a real interval when the size of the submatrix grows to $\infty$. We prove that a banded Toeplitz matrix belongs to this class if and only if its symbol has real values on a Jordan curve located in $\mathbb{C}\setminus\{0\}$. Surprisingly, it turns out that, if such a Jordan curve is present, the spectra of all the submatrices have to be real. The latter claim is also proven for matrices given by a more general symbol. Further, the limiting eigenvalue distribution of a real banded Toeplitz matrix is related to the solution of a determinate Hamburger moment problem. We use this to derive a formula for the limiting measure using a parametrization of the Jordan curve. We also describe a Jacobi operator, whose spectral measure coincides with the limiting measure. We show that this Jacobi operator is a compact perturbation of a tridiagonal Toeplitz matrix. Our main results are illustrated by several concrete examples; some of them allow an explicit analytic treatment, while some are only treated numerically. Update: The proof of Theorem 8 contains an error. An erratum is attached in the end

The Hilbert $L$-matrix

We analyze spectral properties of the Hilbert $L$-matrix $$\left(\frac{1}{\max(m,n)+ν}\right)_{m,n=0}^{\infty}$$ regarded as an operator $L_ν$ acting on $\ell^{2}(\mathbb{N}_{0})$, for $ν\in\mathbb{R}$, $ν\neq0,-1,-2,\dots$. The approach is based on a spectral analysis of the inverse of $L_ν$, which is an unbounded Jacobi operator whose spectral properties are deducible in terms of the unit argument ${}_{3}F_{2}$-hypergeometric functions. In particular, we give answers to two open problems concerning the operator norm of $L_ν$ published by L. Bouthat and J. Mashreghi in [Oper. Matrices 15, No. 1 (2021), 47--58]. In addition, several general aspects concerning the definition of an $L$-operator, its positivity, and Fredholm determinants are also discussed.

The asymptotic zero distribution of Lommel polynomials as polynomials of the order with a variable complex argument

We study the asymptotic distribution of roots of Lommel polynomials as polynomials of the order with a variable and purely imaginary argument. The roots are complex and accumulate on certain curves in the complex plane. We prove existence of the weak limit of corresponding root-counting measures and deduce formulas for the supporting curves and density. The obtained result represents a solvable example of a more general problem which is still open. Numerical illustrations of the main result are also involved.

On Lieb--Thirring inequalities for one-dimensional non-self-adjoint Jacobi and Schr{\" o}dinger operators

We study to what extent Lieb--Thirring inequalities are extendable from self-adjoint to general (possibly non-self-adjoint) Jacobi and Schrödinger operators. Namely, we prove the conjecture of Hansmann and Katriel from [Complex Anal. Oper. Theory 5, No. 1 (2011), 197-218] and answer another open question raised therein. The results are obtained by means of asymptotic analysis of eigenvalues of discrete Schrödinger operators with rectangular barrier potential and complex coupling. Applying the ideas in the continuous setting, we also solve a similar open problem for one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with complex-valued potentials published by Demuth, Hansmann, and Katriel in [Integral Equations Operator Theory 75, No. 1 (2013), 1-5].

The Hurwitz-type theorem for the regular Coulomb wave function via Hankel determinants

We derive a closed formula for the determinant of the Hankel matrix whose entries are given by sums of negative powers of the zeros of the regular Coulomb wave function. This new identity applied together with results of Grommer and Chebotarev allows us to prove a Hurwitz-type theorem about the zeros of the regular Coulomb wave function. As a particular case, we obtain a new proof of the classical Hurwitz's theorem from the theory of Bessel functions that is based on algebraic arguments. In addition, several Hankel determinants with entries given by the Rayleigh function and Bernoulli numbers are also evaluated.

Nevanlinna extremal measures for polynomials related to $q^{-1}$-Fibonacci polynomials

The aim of this paper is the study of $q^{-1}$-Fibonacci polynomials with $0<q<1$. First, the $q^{-1}$-Fibonacci polynomials are related to a $q$-exponential function which allows an asymptotic analysis to be worked out. Second, related basic orthogonal polynomials are investigated with the emphasis on their orthogonality properties. In particular, a compact formula for the reproducing kernel is obtained that allows to describe all the N-extremal measures of orthogonality in terms of basic hypergeometric functions and their zeros. Two special cases involving $q$-sine and $q$-cosine are discussed in more detail.

Spectral analysis of two doubly infinite Jacobi matrices with exponential entries

We provide a complete spectral analysis of all self-adjoint operators acting on $\ell^{2}(\mathbb{Z})$ which are associated with two doubly infinite Jacobi matrices with entries given by $$ q^{-n+1}δ_{m,n-1}+q^{-n}δ_{m,n+1} $$ and $$ δ_{m,n-1}+αq^{-n}δ_{m,n}+δ_{m,n+1}, $$ respectively, where $q\in(0,1)$ and $α\in\mathbb{R}$. As an application, we derive orthogonality relations for the Ramanujan entire function and the third Jackson $q$-Bessel function.

On extremal properties of Jacobian elliptic functions with complex modulus

A thorough analysis of values of the function $m\mapsto\mbox{sn}(K(m)u\mid m)$ for complex parameter $m$ and $u\in (0,1)$ is given. First, it is proved that the absolute value of this function never exceeds 1 if $m$ does not belong to the region in $\mathbb{C}$ determined by inequalities $|z-1|<1$ and $|z|>1$. The global maximum of the function under investigation is shown to be always located in this region. More precisely, it is proved that, if $u\leq1/2$, then the global maxim is located at $m=1$ with the value equal to $1$. While if $u>1/2$, then the global maximum is located in the interval $(1,2)$ and its value exceeds $1$. In addition, more subtle extremal properties are studied numerically. Finally, applications in a Laplace-type integral and spectral analysis of some complex Jacobi matrices are presented.
