Application of the convergence of the spatio-temporal processes for visits to small sets

The goal of this article is to point out the importance of spatio-temporal processes in different questions of quantitative recurrence. We focus on applications to the study of the number of visits to a small set before the first visit to another set (question arising from a previous work by Kifer and Rapaport), the study of high records, the study of line processes, the study of the time spent by a flow in a small set. We illustrate these applications by results on billiards or geodesic flows. This paper contains in particular new result of convergence in distribution of the spatio temporal processes associated to visits by the Sinai billiard flow to a small neighbourhood of orbitrary points in the billiard domain.

Continuous-time random walk between Lévy-spaced targets in the real line

We consider a continuous-time random walk which is defined as an interpolation of a random walk on a point process on the real line. The distances between neighboring points of the point process are i.i.d. random variables in the normal domain of attraction of an $α$-stable distribution with $0 < α< 1$. This is therefore an example of a random walk in a Lévy random medium. Specifically, it is a generalization of a process known in the physical literature as Lévy-Lorentz gas. We prove that the annealed version of the process is superdiffusive with scaling exponent $1/(α+ 1)$ and identify the limiting process, which is not càdlàg. The proofs are based on the technique of Kesten and Spitzer for random walks in random scenery.

Multiplicative ergodicity of laplace transforms for additive functional of markov chains with application to age-dependent branching process

We study the exponential growth of bifurcating processes with ancestral dependence. We suppose here that the lifetimes of the cells are dependent random variables, that the numbers of new cells are random and dependent. Lifetimes and new cells's numbers are also assumed to be dependent. We illustrate our results by examples, including some Markov models. Our approach is related to the behaviour of the Laplace transform of nonnegative additive functional of Markov chains and require weak moment assumption (no exponential moment is needed).

Random walks and branching processes in correlated Gaussian environment

We study persistence probabilities for random walks in correlated Gaussian random environment first studied by Oshanin, Rosso and Schehr. From the persistence results, we can deduce properties of critical branching processes with offspring sizes geometrically distributed with correlated random parameters. More precisely, we obtain estimates on the tail distribution of its total population size, of its maximum population, and of its extinction time.

Multiplicative ergodicity of Laplace transforms for additive functional of Markov chains

We study properties of the Laplace transforms of non-negative additive functionals of Markov chains. We are namely interested in a multiplicative ergodicity property used in [18] to study bifurcating processes with ancestral dependence. We develop a general approach based on the use of the operator perturbation method. We apply our general results to two examples of Markov chains, including a linear autoregressive model. In these two examples the operator-type assumptions reduce to some expected finite moment conditions on the functional (no exponential moment conditions are assumed in this work).

On the halphen transform of algebraic space curves

The Halphen transform of a plane curve is the curve obtained by intersecting the tangent lines of the curve with the corresponding polar lines with respect to some conic. This transform has been introduced by Halphen as a branch desingularization method and has also been studied by Coolidge and by Josse. We extend this notion to Halphen transform of a space curve and study several of its properties (birationality, degree, rank, class, desingularization).

On the range of the Campanino and Pétritis random walk

We are interested in the behaviour of the range of the Campanino and Pétritis random walk, namely a simple random walk on the lattice $\mathbb Z^2$ with random orientations of the horizontal layers. We also study the range of random walks in random scenery, from which the asymptotic behaviour of the range of the first coordinate of the Campanino and Pétritis random walk can be deduced.

On the local time of random processes in random scenery

Random walks in random scenery are processes defined by $Z_n:=\sum_{k=1}^nξ_{X_1+...+X_k}$, where basically $(X_k,k\ge 1)$ and $(ξ_y,y\in\mathbb Z)$ are two independent sequences of i.i.d. random variables. We assume here that $X_1$ is $\ZZ$-valued, centered and with finite moments of all orders. We also assume that $ξ_0$ is $\ZZ$-valued, centered and square integrable. In this case H. Kesten and F. Spitzer proved that $(n^{-3/4}Z_{[nt]},t\ge 0)$ converges in distribution as $n\to \infty$ toward some self-similar process $(Δ_t,t\ge 0)$ called Brownian motion in random scenery. In a previous paper, we established that ${\mathbb P}(Z_n=0)$ behaves asymptotically like a constant times $n^{-3/4}$, as $n\to \infty$. We extend here this local limit theorem: we give a precise asymptotic result for the probability for $Z$ to return to zero simultaneously at several times. As a byproduct of our computations, we show that $Δ$ admits a bi-continuous version of its local time process which is locally Hölder continuous of order $1/4-δ$ and $1/6-δ$, respectively in the time and space variables, for any $δ>0$. In particular, this gives a new proof of the fact, previously obtained by Khoshnevisan, that the level sets of $Δ$ have Hausdorff dimension a.s. equal to 1/4. We also get the convergence of every moment of the normalized local time of $Z$ toward its continuous counterpart.

Limit theorems for one and two-dimensional random walks in random scenery

Random walks in random scenery are processes defined by $Z_n:=\sum_{k=1}^nξ_{X_1+...+X_k}$, where $(X_k,k\ge 1)$ and $(ξ_y,y\in{\mathbb Z}^d)$ are two independent sequences of i.i.d. random variables with values in ${\mathbb Z}^d$ and $\mathbb R$ respectively. We suppose that the distributions of $X_1$ and $ξ_0$ belong to the normal basin of attraction of stable distribution of index $α\in(0,2]$ and $β\in(0,2]$. When $d=1$ and $α\ne 1$, a functional limit theorem has been established in \cite{KestenSpitzer} and a local limit theorem in \cite{BFFN}. In this paper, we establish the convergence of the finite-dimensional distributions and a local limit theorem when $α=d$ (i.e. $α= d=1$ or $α=d=2$) and $β\in (0,2]$. Let us mention that functional limit theorems have been established in \cite{bolthausen} and recently in \cite{DU} in the particular case where $β=2$ (respectively for $α=d=2$ and $α=d=1$).

Renewal theorems for random walks in random scenery

Random walks in random scenery are processes defined by $Z_n:=\sum_{k=1}^nξ_{X_1+...+X_k}$, where $(X_k,k\ge 1)$ and $(ξ_y,y\in\mathbb Z)$ are two independent sequences of i.i.d. random variables. We suppose that the distributions of $X_1$ and $ξ_0$ belong to the normal domain of attraction of strictly stable distributions with index $α\in[1,2]$ and $β\in(0,2)$ respectively. We are interested in the asymptotic behaviour as $|a|$ goes to infinity of quantities of the form $\sum_{n\ge 1}{\mathbb E}[h(Z_n-a)]$ (when $(Z_n)_n$ is transient) or $\sum_{n\ge 1}{\mathbb E}[h(Z_n)-h(Z_n-a)]$ (when $(Z_n)_n$ is recurrent) where $h$ is some complex-valued function defined on $\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{Z}$.

A local limit theorem for random walks in random scenery and on randomly oriented lattices

Random walks in random scenery are processes defined by $Z_n:=\sum_{k=1}^nξ_{X_1+...+X_k}$, where $(X_k,k\ge 1)$ and $(ξ_y,y\in\mathbb Z)$ are two independent sequences of i.i.d. random variables. We assume here that their distributions belong to the normal domain of attraction of stable laws with index $α\in (0,2]$ and $β\in (0,2]$ respectively. These processes were first studied by H. Kesten and F. Spitzer, who proved the convergence in distribution when $α\neq 1$ and as $n\to \infty$, of $n^{-δ}Z_n$, for some suitable $δ>0$ depending on $α$ and $β$. Here we are interested in the convergence, as $n\to \infty$, of $n^δ{\mathbb P}(Z_n=\lfloor n^δ x\rfloor)$, when $x\in \RR$ is fixed. We also consider the case of random walks on randomly oriented lattices for which we obtain similar results.

The Nagaev-Guivarc'h method via the Keller-Liverani theorem

The Nagaev-Guivarc'h method, via the perturbation operator theorem of Keller and Liverani, has been exploited in recent papers to establish local limit and Berry-Essen type theorems for unbounded functionals of strongly ergodic Markov chains. The main difficulty of this approach is to prove Taylor expansions for the dominating eigenvalue of the Fourier kernels. This paper outlines this method and extends it by proving a multi-dimensional local limit theorem, a first-order Edgeworth expansion, and a multi-dimensional Berry-Esseen type theorem in the sense of Prohorov metric. When applied to uniformly or geometrically ergodic chains and to iterative Lipschitz models, the above cited limit theorems hold under moment conditions similar, or close, to those of the i.i.d. case.

Back to balls in billiards

We consider a billiard in the plane with periodic configuration of convex scatterers. This system is recurrent, in the sense that almost every orbit comes back arbitrarily close to the initial point. In this paper we study the time needed to get back in an r-ball about the initial point, in the phase space and also for the position, in the limit when r->0. We establish the existence of an almost sure convergence rate, and prove a convergence in distribution for the rescaled return times.

Rate of convergence in the multidimensional central limit theorem for stationary processes. Application to the Knudsen gas and to the Sinai billiard

We show how Rio's method [Probab. Theory Related Fields 104 (1996) 255--282] can be adapted to establish a rate of convergence in ${\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}}$ in the multidimensional central limit theorem for some stationary processes in the sense of the Kantorovich metric. We give two applications of this general result: in the case of the Knudsen gas and in the case of the Sinai billiard.
