Asymptotic one-dimensional symmetry for the Fisher-KPP equation

Let $u$ be a solution of the Fisher-KPP equation $$ \partial_t u=Δu+f(u),\quad t>0,\ x\in\mathbb{R}^N. $$ We address the following question: does $u$ become locally planar as $t\to+\infty$ ? Namely, does $u(t_n,x_n+\cdot)$ converge locally uniformly, up to subsequences, towards a one-dimensional function, for any sequence $((t_n,x_n))_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ in $(0,+\infty)\times\mathbb{R}^N$ such that $t_n\to+\infty$ as $n\to+\infty$ ? This question is in the spirit of a conjecture of De Giorgi for stationary solutions of Allen-Cahn equations. The answer depends on the initial datum $u_0$ of $u$. It is known to be affirmative when the support of $u_0$ is bounded or when it lies between two parallel half-spaces. Instead, the answer is negative when the support of $u_0$ is "V-shaped". We prove here that $u$ is asymptotically locally planar when the support of $u_0$ is a convex set (satisfying in addition a uniform interior ball condition), or, more generally, when it is at finite Hausdorff distance from a convex set. We actually derive the result under an even more general geometric hypothesis on the support of $u_0$. We recover in particular the aforementioned results known in the literature. We further characterize the set of directions in which $u$ is asymptotically locally planar, and we show that the asymptotic profiles are monotone. Our results apply in particular when the support of $u_0$ is the subgraph of a function with vanishing global mean.

Spreading sets and one-dimensional symmetry for reaction-diffusion equations

We consider reaction-diffusion equations $\partial_tu=Δu+f(u)$ in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$ and we are interested in the large-time dynamics of solutions ranging in the interval $[0,1]$, with general unbounded initial support. Under the hypothesis of the existence of a traveling front connecting $0$ and $1$ with a positive speed, we discuss the existence of spreading speeds and spreading sets, which describe the large-time global shape of the level sets of the solutions. The spreading speed in any direction is expressed as a Freidlin-Gärtner type formula. This formula holds under general assumptions on the reaction and for solutions emanating from initial conditions with general unbounded support, whereas most of earlier results were concerned with more specific reactions and compactly supported or almost-planar initial conditions. We then investigate the local properties of the level sets at large time. Some flattening properties of the level sets of the solutions, if initially supported on subgraphs, will be presented. We also investigate the special case of asymptotically conical-shaped initial conditions. For Fisher-KPP equations, we state some asymptotic local one-dimensional and monotonicity symmetry properties for the elements of the $Ω$-limit set of the solutions, in the spirit of a conjecture of De Giorgi for stationary solutions of Allen-Cahn equations. Lastly, we present some logarithmic-in-time estimates of the lag of the position of the solutions with respect to that of a planar front with minimal speed, for initial conditions which are supported on subgraphs with logarithmic growth at infinity. Some related conjectures and open problems are also listed.

Adaptation in a heterogeneous environment. I: Persistence versus extinction

Understanding how a diversity of plants in agroecosystems affects the adaptation of pathogens in a key issue in agroecology. We analyze PDE systems describing the dynamics of adaptation of two phenotypically structured populations, under the effects of mutation, selection and migration in a two-patches environment, each patch being associated with a different phenotypic optimum. We consider two types of growth functions that depend on the n--dimensional phenotypic trait: either local and linear or nonlocal nonlinear. In both cases, we obtain existence and uniqueness results as well as a characterization of the large-time behaviour of the solution (persistence or extinction) based on the sign of a principal eigenvalue. We show that migration between the two environments decreases the chances of persistence, with in some cases a 'lethal migration threshold' above which persistence is not possible. Comparison with stochastic individual-based simulations shows that the PDE approach accurately captures this threshold. Our results illustrate the importance of cultivar mixtures for disease prevention and control.

Reaction-diffusion fronts in funnel-shaped domains

We consider bistable reaction-diffusion equations in funnel-shaped domains of R N made up of straight parts and conical parts with positive opening angles. We study the large time dynamics of entire solutions emanating from a planar front in the straight part of such a domain and moving into the conical part. We show a dichotomy between blocking and spreading, by proving especially some new Liouville type results on stable solutions of semilinear elliptic equations in the whole space R N. We also show that any spreading solution is a transition front having a global mean speed, which is the unique speed of planar fronts, and that it converges at large time in the conical part of the domain to a well-formed front whose position is approximated by expanding spheres. Moreover, we provide sufficient conditions on the size R of the straight part of the domain and on the opening angle $α$ of the conical part, under which the solution emanating from a planar front is blocked or spreads completely in the conical part. We finally show the openness of the set of parameters (R, $α$) for which the propagation is complete.

Large time monotonicity of solutions of reaction-diffusion equations in R^N

In this paper, we consider nonnegative solutions of spatially heterogeneous Fisher-KPP type reaction-diffusion equations in the whole space. Under some assumptions on the initial conditions, including in particular the case of compactly supported initial conditions, we show that, above any arbitrary positive value, the solution is increasing in time at large times. Furthermore, in the one-dimensional case, we prove that, if the equation is homogeneous outside a bounded interval and the reaction is linear around the zero state, then the solution is time-increasing in the whole line at large times. The question of the monotonicity in time is motivated by a medical imagery issue.

One-dimensional symmetry and Liouville type results for the fourth order Allen-Cahn equation in R$^N$

In this paper, we prove an analogue of Gibbons' conjecture for the extended fourth order Allen-Cahn equation in R N , as well as Liouville type results for some solutions converging to the same value at infinity in a given direction. We also prove a priori bounds and further one-dimensional symmetry and rigidity results for semilinear fourth order elliptic equations with more general nonlinearities.

Sharp thresholds between finite spread and uniform convergence for a reaction-diffusion equation with oscillating initial data

We investigate the large-time dynamics of solutions of multi-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations with ignition type nonlinearities. We consider solutions which are in some sense locally persistent at large time and initial data which asymptotically oscillate around the ignition threshold. We show that, as time goes to infinity, any solution either converges uniformly in space to a constant state, or spreads with a finite speed uniformly in all directions. Furthermore, the transition between these two behaviors is sharp with respect to the period vector of the asymptotic profile of the initial data. We also show the convergence to planar fronts when the initial data are asymptotically periodic in one direction.

Shear flows of an ideal fluid and elliptic equations in unbounded domains

We prove that, in a two-dimensional strip, a steady flow of an ideal incompressible fluid with no stationary point and tangential boundary conditions is a shear flow. The same conclusion holds for a bounded steady flow in a half-plane. The proofs are based on the study of the geometric properties of the streamlines of the flow and on one-dimensional symmetry results for solutions of some semilinear elliptic equations. Some related rigidity results of independent interest are also shown in n-dimensional slabs in any dimension n.

Transition fronts and stretching phenomena for a general class of reaction-dispersion equations

We consider a general form of reaction-dispersion equations with non-local dispersal and local reaction. Under some general conditions, we prove the non-existence of transition fronts, as well as some stretching properties at large time for the solutions of the Cauchy problem. These conditions are satisfied in particular when the reaction is monostable and when the dispersal operator is either the fractional Laplacian, a convolution operator with a fat-tailed kernel or a nonlinear fast diffusion operator.

Comparison results for semilinear elliptic equations using a new symmetrization method

In this paper, we prove some pointwise comparison results between the solutions of some second-order semilinear elliptic equations in a domain $Ω$ of $\R^n$ and the solutions of some radially symmetric equations in the equimeasurable ball $Ω^*$. The coefficients of the symmetrized equations in~$Ω^*$ satisfy similar constraints as the original ones in~$Ω$. We consider both the case of equations with linear growth in the gradient and the case of equations with at most quadratic growth in the gradient. Lastly, we show some improved quantified comparisons when the original domain is not a ball. The method is based on a symmetrization of the second-order terms.

Generalized transition waves and their properties

In this paper, we generalize the usual notions of waves, fronts and propagation speeds in a very general setting. These new notions, which cover all classical situations, involve uniform limits, with respect to the geodesic distance, to a family of hypersurfaces which are parametrized by time. We prove the existence of new such waves for some time-dependent reaction-diffusion equations, as well as general intrinsic properties, some monotonicity properties and uniqueness results for almost planar fronts. The classification results, which are obtained under appropriate assumptions, show the robustness of our general definition
