Bifurcation analysis of the Hardy-Sobolev equation

In this paper, we prove existence of multiple non-radial solutions to the Hardy-Sobolev equation $$\begin{cases} -Δu-\displaystyle\frac γ{|x|^2}u=\displaystyle\frac{1}{|x|^s}|u|^{p_s-2}u & \text{ in } \mathbb{R}^N\setminus\{0\},\\ u\geq 0, & \end{cases}$$ where $N\geq 3$, $s\in[0,2)$, $p_s=\frac{2(N-s)}{N-2}$ and $γ\in (-\infty,\frac{(N-2)^2} 4)$. We extend results of E.N. Dancer, F. Gladiali, M. Grossi, Proc. Roy. Soc. Edinburgh Sect. A 147 (2017) where only the case $s=0$ is considered. Moreover, thanks to monotonicity properties of the solutions, we separate two branches of non-radial solutions.

Concentration phenomena for the Schrödinger-Poisson system in $\mathbb{R}^2$

We perform a semiclassical analysis for the planar Schrödinger-Poisson system \[ \cases{ -\varepsilon^{2} Δψ+V(x)ψ= E(x) ψ\quad \text{in $\mathbb{R}^2$},\cr -ΔE= |ψ|^{2} \quad \text{in $\mathbb{R}^2$}, \cr } \tag{$SP_\varepsilon$} \] where $\varepsilon$ is a positive parameter corresponding to the Planck constant and $V$ is a bounded external potential. We detect solution pairs $(u_\varepsilon, E_\varepsilon)$ of the system $(SP_\varepsilon)$ as~$\ge \rightarrow 0$.

Equilibrium measures and equilibrium potentials in the Born-Infeld model

In this paper, we consider the electrostatic Born-Infeld model \begin{equation*} \tag{$\mathcal{BI}$} \left\{ \begin{array}{rcll} -\operatorname{div}\left(\displaystyle\frac{\nabla ϕ}{\sqrt{1-|\nabla ϕ|^2}}\right)&=& ρ& \hbox{in }\mathbb{R}^N, \\[6mm] \displaystyle\lim_{|x|\to \infty}ϕ(x)&=& 0 \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $ρ$ is a charge distribution on the boundary of a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$. We are interested in its equilibrium measures, i.e. charge distributions which minimize the electrostatic energy of the corresponding potential among all possible distributions with fixed total charge. We prove existence of equilibrium measures and we show that the corresponding equilibrium potential is unique and constant in $\overline Ω$. Furthermore, for smooth domains, we obtain the uniqueness of the equilibrium measure, we give its precise expression, and we verify that the equilibrium potential solves ($\mathcal{BI}$). Finally we characterize balls in $\mathbb{R}^N$ as the unique sets among all bounded $C^{2,α}$-domains $Ω$ for which the equilibrium distribution is a constant multiple of the surface measure on $\partialΩ$. The same results are obtained also for Taylor approximations of the electrostatic energy.

Long-time dynamics of a hinged-free plate driven by a non-conservative force

A partially hinged, partially free rectangular plate is considered, with the aim to address the possible unstable end behaviors of a suspension bridge subject to wind. This leads to a nonlinear plate evolution equation with a nonlocal stretching active in the span-wise direction. The wind-flow in the chord-wise direction is modeled through a piston-theoretic approximation, which provides both weak (frictional) dissipation and non-conservative forces. The long-time behavior of solutions is analyzed from various points of view. Compact global attractors, as well as fractal exponential attractors, are constructed using the recent quasi-stability theory. The non-conservative nature of the dynamics requires the direct construction of a uniformly absorbing ball, and this relies on the superlinearity of the stretching. For some parameter ranges, the non-triviality of the attractor is shown through the spectral analysis of the stationary linearized (non self-adjoint) equation and the existence of multiple unimodal solutions is shown. Several stability results, obtained through energy estimates under various smallness conditions and/or assumptions on the equilibrium set, are also provided. Finally, the existence of a finite set of determining modes for the dynamics is demonstrated, justifying the usual modal truncation in engineering for the study of the qualitative behavior of suspension bridge dynamics.

Nodal Solutions for sublinear-type problems with Dirichlet boundary conditions

We consider nonlinear second order elliptic problems of the type \[ -Δu=f(u) \text{ in } Ω, \qquad u=0 \text{ on } \partial Ω, \] where $Ω$ is an open $C^{1,1}$-domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 2$, under some general assumptions on the nonlinearity that include the case of a sublinear pure power $f(s)=|s|^{p-1}s$ with $0<p<1$ and of Allen-Cahn type $f(s)=λ(s-|s|^{p-1}s)$ with $p>1$ and $λ>λ_2(Ω)$ (the second Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Laplacian). We prove the existence of a least energy nodal (i.e. sign changing) solution, and of a nodal solution of mountain-pass type. We then give explicit examples of domains where the associated levels do not coincide. For the case where $Ω$ is a ball or annulus and $f$ is of class $C^1$, we prove instead that the levels coincide, and that least energy nodal solutions are nonradial but axially symmetric functions. Finally, we provide stronger results for the Allen-Cahn type nonlinearities in case $Ω$ is either a ball or a square. In particular we give a complete description of the solution set for $λ\sim λ_2(Ω)$, computing the Morse index of the solutions.

On the Born-Infeld equation for electrostatic fields with a superposition of point charges

In this paper, we study the static Born-Infeld equation $$ -\mathrm{div}\left(\frac{\nabla u}{\sqrt{1-|\nabla u|^2}}\right)=\sum_{k=1}^n a_kδ_{x_k}\quad\mbox{in }\mathbb R^N,\qquad \lim_{|x|\to\infty}u(x)=0, $$ where $N\ge3$, $a_k\in\mathbb R$ for all $k=1,\dots,n$, $x_k\in\mathbb R^N$ are the positions of the point charges, possibly non symmetrically distributed, and $δ_{x_k}$ is the Dirac delta distribution centered at $x_k$. For this problem, we give explicit quantitative sufficient conditions on $a_k$ and $x_k$ to guarantee that the minimizer of the energy functional associated to the problem solves the associated Euler-Lagrange equation. Furthermore, we provide a more rigorous proof of some previous results on the nature of the singularities of the minimizer at the points $x_k$'s depending on the sign of charges $a_k$'s. For every $m\in\mathbb N$, we also consider the approximated problem $$ -\sum_{h=1}^mα_hΔ_{2h}u=\sum_{k=1}^n a_kδ_{x_k}\quad\mbox{in }\mathbb R^N, \qquad\lim_{|x|\to\infty}u(x)=0 $$ where the differential operator is replaced by its Taylor expansion of order $2m$, see (2.1). It is known that each of these problems has a unique solution. We study the regularity of the approximating solution, the nature of its singularities, and the asymptotic behavior of the solution and of its gradient near the singularities.

A quasilinear bistable equation in cylinders and timelike heteroclinics in special relativity

In this note we consider the action functional \[ \int_{\mathbb{R} \times ω} \left( 1 - \sqrt{ 1 - |\nabla u|^2 } + W(u) \right) \, \mathrm{d}t, \] where $W$ is a double well potential and $ω$ is a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^{N-1}$. We prove existence, one-dimensionality and uniqueness (up to translation) of a smooth minimizing phase transition between the two stable states $u=1$ and $u=-1$. The question of existence of at least one minimal heteroclinic connection for the non autonomous model \[ \int_{\mathbb{R}} \left( 1 - \sqrt{1-|u'|^2} + a(t) W(u) \right) \, \mathrm{d}t \] is also addressed. For this, we look for the possible assumptions on $a(t)$ ensuring the existence of a minimizer.

Multiple positive solutions of the stationary Keller-Segel system

We consider the stationary Keller-Segel equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δv+v=λe^v, \quad v>0 \quad & \text{in }Ω,\\ \partial_νv=0 &\text{on } \partial Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $Ω$ is a ball. In the regime $λ\to 0$, we study the radial bifurcations and we construct radial solutions by a gluing variational method. For any given natural positive number $n$, we build a solution having multiple layers at $r_1,\ldots,r_n$ by which we mean that the solutions concentrate on the spheres of radii $r_i$ as $λ\to 0$ (for all $i=1,\ldots,n$). A remarkable fact is that, in opposition to previous known results, the layers of the solutions do not accumulate to the boundary of $Ω$ as $λ\to 0$. Instead they satisfy an optimal partition problem in the limit.

Multiple radial positive solutions of semilinear elliptic problems with Neumann boundary conditions

Assuming $B_{R}$ is a ball in $\mathbb R^{N}$, we analyze the positive solutions of the problem \[ \begin{cases} -Δu+u= |u|^{p-2}u, &\text{ in } B_{R},\newline \partial_νu=0,&\text{ on } \partial B_{R}, \end{cases} \] that branch out from the constant solution $u=1$ as $p$ grows from $2$ to $+\infty$. The non-zero constant positive solution is the unique positive solution for $p$ close to $2$. We show that there exist arbitrarily many positive solutions as $p\to\infty$ (in particular, for supercritical exponents) or as $R \to \infty$ for any fixed value of $p>2$, answering partially a conjecture in [Bonheure-Noris-Weth]. We give the explicit lower bounds for $p$ and $R$ so that a given number of solutions exist. The geometrical properties of those solutions are studied and illustrated numerically. Our simulations motivate additional conjectures. The structure of the least energy solutions (among all or only among radial solutions) and other related problems are also discussed.

One-dimensional symmetry and Liouville type results for the fourth order Allen-Cahn equation in R$^N$

In this paper, we prove an analogue of Gibbons' conjecture for the extended fourth order Allen-Cahn equation in R N , as well as Liouville type results for some solutions converging to the same value at infinity in a given direction. We also prove a priori bounds and further one-dimensional symmetry and rigidity results for semilinear fourth order elliptic equations with more general nonlinearities.

Paths to uniqueness of critical points and applications to partial differential equations

We prove a unified and general criterion for the uniqueness of critical points of a functional in the presence of constraints such as positivity, boundedness, or fixed mass. Our method relies on convexity properties along suitable paths and significantly generalizes well-known uniqueness theorems. Due to the flexibility in the construction of the paths, our approach does not depend on the convexity of the domain and can be used to prove uniqueness in subsets, even if it does not hold globally. The results apply to all critical points and not only to minimizers, thus they provide uniqueness of solutions to the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations. For functionals emerging from elliptic problems, the assumptions of our abstract theorems follow from maximum principles, decay properties, and novel general inequalities. To illustrate our method we present a unified proof of known results, as well as new theorems for mean-curvature type operators, fractional Laplacians, Hamiltonian systems, Schrödinger equations, and Gross-Pitaevski systems.

Existence and symmetry of least energy nodal solutions for Hamiltonian elliptic systems

In this paper we prove existence of least energy nodal solutions for the Hamiltonian elliptic system with Hénon-type weights \[ -Δu = |x|^β |v|^{q-1}v, \quad -Δv =|x|^α|u|^{p-1}u\quad { in } Ω, \qquad u=v=0 { on } \partial Ω, \] where $Ω$ is a bounded smooth domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 1$, $α, β\geq 0$ and the nonlinearities are superlinear and subcritical, namely \[ 1> \frac{1}{p+1}+\frac{1}{q+1}> \frac{N-2}{N}. \] When $Ω$ is either a ball or an annulus centred at the origin and $N \geq 2$, we show that these solutions display the so-called foliated Schwarz symmetry. It is natural to conjecture that these solutions are not radially symmetric. We provide such a symmetry breaking in a range of parameters where the solutions of the system behave like the solutions of a single equation. Our results on the above system are new even in the case of the Lane-Emden system (i.e. without weights). As far as we know, this is the first paper that contains results about least energy nodal solutions for strongly coupled elliptic systems and their symmetry properties.

Nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation: concentration on circles driven by an external magnetic field

In this paper, we study the semiclassical limit for the stationary magnetic nonlinear Schrödinger equation \begin{align}\label{eq:initialabstract}\left( i \hbar \nabla + A(x) \right)^2 u + V(x) u = |u|^{p-2} u, \quad x\in \mathbb{R}^{3},\end{align}where $p\textgreater{}2$, $A$ is a vector potential associated to a given magnetic field $B$, i.e $\nabla \times A =B$ and $V$ is a nonnegative, scalar (electric) potential which can be singular at the origin and vanish at infinity or outside a compact set.We assume that $A$ and $V$ satisfy a cylindrical symmetry. By a refined penalization argument, we prove the existence of semiclassical cylindrically symmetric solutions of upper equation whose moduli concentrate, as $\hbar \to 0$, around a circle. We emphasize that the concentration is driven by the magnetic and the electric potentials. Our result thus shows that in the semiclassical limit, the magnetic field also influences the location of the solutions of $(\ref{eq:initialabstract})$ if their concentration occurs around a locus, not a single point.

On the electrostatic Born-Infeld equation with extended charges

In this paper, we deal with the electrostatic Born-Infeld equation \begin{equation}\label{eq:BI-abs} \tag{$\mathcal{BI}$} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} -\operatorname{div}\left(\displaystyle\frac{\nabla ϕ}{\sqrt{1-|\nabla ϕ|^2}}\right)= ρ, & \hbox{in } \mathbb{R}^N, \\ \displaystyle\lim_{|x|\to \infty}ϕ(x)= 0, \end{array} \right. \end{equation} where $ρ$ is an assigned extended charge density. We are interested in the existence and uniqueness of the potential $ϕ$ and finiteness of the energy of the electrostatic field $-\nabla ϕ$. We first relax the problem and treat it with the direct method of the Calculus of Variations for a broad class of charge densities. Assuming $ρ$ is radially distributed, we recover the weak formulation of \eqref{eq:BI-abs} and the regularity of the solution of the Poisson equation (under the same smootheness assumptions). In the case of a locally bounded charge, we also recover the weak formulation without assuming any symmetry. The solution is even classical if $ρ$ is smooth. Then we analyze the case where the density $ρ$ is a superposition of point charges and discuss the results in [Kiessling, Comm. Math. Phys. 314 (2012), 509--523]. Other models are discussed, as for instance a system arising from the coupling of the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with the Born-Infeld theory.

Hamiltonian elliptic systems: a guide to variational frameworks

Consider a Hamiltonian system of type \[ -Δu=H_{v}(u,v),\ -Δv=H_{u}(u,v) \ \ \text{ in } Ω, \qquad u,v=0 \text{ on } \partial Ω\] where $H$ is a power-type nonlinearity, for instance $H(u,v)= |u|^p/p+|v|^q/q$, having subcritical growth, and $Ω$ is a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 1$. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the several variational frameworks that can be used to treat such a system. Within each approach, we address existence of solutions, and in particular of ground state solutions. Some of the available frameworks are more adequate to derive certain qualitative properties; we illustrate this in the second half of this survey, where we also review some of the most recent literature dealing mainly with symmetry, concentration, and multiplicity results. This paper contains some original results as well as new proofs and approaches to known facts.

Increasing radial solutions for Neumann problems without growth restrictions

We study the existence of positive increasing radial solutions for superlinear Neumann problems in the ball. We do not impose any growth condition on the nonlinearity at infinity and our assumptions allow for interactions with the spectrum. In our approach we use both topological and variational arguments, and we overcome the lack of compactness by considering the cone of nonnegative, nondecreasing radial functions of H^1.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equation with unbounded or vanishing potentials: solutions concentrating on lower dimensional spheres

We study positive bound states for the semiclassical stationary nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We are especially interested in solutions which concentrate on a lower dimensional sphere. We adopt a purely variational approach which allows us to consider broader classes of potentials than those treated in previous works. For example, the potentials might be singular at the origin or vanish superquadratically at infinity.
