Scotogenic majorana neutrino masses in a predictive orbifold theory of flavour

The use of extra space-time dimensions provides a promising approach to the flavour problem. The chosen compactification of a 6-dimensional orbifold implies a remnant family symmetry $A_4$. This makes interesting predictions for quark and lepton masses, for neutrino oscillations and neutrinoless double beta decay, providing also a very good global description of all flavour observables. Due to an auxiliary $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry, we implement a scotogenic Majorana neutrino mass generation mechanism with a viable WIMP dark matter candidate.

$SU(5)$ Grand Unified Theory with $A_4$ Modular Symmetry

We present the first example of a grand unified theory (GUT) with a modular symmetry interpreted as a family symmetry. The theory is based on supersymmetric $SU(5)$ in 6d, where the two extra dimensions are compactified on a $T_2/\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold. We have shown that, if there is a finite modular symmetry, then it can only be $A_4$ with an (infinite) discrete choice of moduli, where we focus on $τ= ω=e^{i2π/3}$, the unique solution with $|τ|=1$. The fields on the branes respect a generalised CP and flavour symmetry $A_4\ltimes \mathbb{Z}_2$ which is isomorphic to $S_4$ which leads to an effective $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry at low energies, implying maximal atmospheric mixing and maximal leptonic CP violation. We construct an explicit model along these lines with two triplet flavons in the bulk, whose vacuum alignments are determined by orbifold boundary conditions, analogous to those used for $SU(5)$ breaking with doublet-triplet splitting. There are two right-handed neutrinos on the branes whose Yukawa couplings are determined by modular weights. The charged lepton and down-type quarks have diagonal and hierarchical Yukawa matrices, with quark mixing due to a hierarchical up-quark Yukawa matrix.

Emergent gravity from off-shell energy fixing

Off-shell processes do not preserve the Energy Momentum Tensor (EMT) in QFT. Fixing the EMT throughout off-shell processes, implies a graviton-like quantum field to emerge without dynamics. Its dynamics are generated through quantum corrections. This Fixed Off-Shell Energy Condition (FOSEC) implies the existence of a linear gravity-like theory, and in special cases the full Poincarè gauge theory. In this work it is shown that imposing the FOSEC in QFT implies the emergence of a viable quantum theory of gravity.

Flavour and CP predictions from orbifold compactification

We propose a theory for fermion masses and mixings in which an $A_4$ family symmetry arises naturally from a six-dimensional spacetime after orbifold compactification. The flavour symmetry leads to the successful "golden" quark-lepton unification formula. The model reproduces oscillation parameters with good precision, giving sharp predictions for the CP violating phases of quarks and leptons, in particular $δ^\ell \simeq +268 ^\circ$. The effective neutrinoless double-beta decay mass parameter is also sharply predicted as $\langle m_{ββ}\rangle \simeq 2.65\ meV$.

Gauge-flavon unification

In this paper we propose the idea that flavons can emerge from extra dimensional gauge fields, referred to as gauge-flavon unification (GFU) analogous to gauge-Higgs unification (GHU). We assume that there is a gauged family symmetry in extra dimensions and that the flavons are the extra dimensional components of the gauge field. This provides a simple mechanism to align the VEVs of the flavons through a combination of Wilson lines and orbifold symmetry breaking. We present some simple 5d examples of GFU based on $SO(3)$ and $SU(4)$ gauged family symmetry, the latter case yielding $SU(3)\times U(1)$ gauged family symmetry in 4d, broken by triplet and antitriplet flavons, with effective couplings to fermions. We also present a general formalism for Wilson lines and orbifolds, in any number of dimensions, including non-commutative aspects Wilson lines, which may be useful for aligning additional flavons as required for realistic models.

Probing the predictions of an orbifold theory of flavor

We examine the implications of a recently proposed theory of fermion masses and mixings in which an $A_4$ family symmetry emerges from orbifold compactification. We analyse two variant schemes concerning their predictions for neutrino oscillations, neutrinoless double-beta decay and the golden quark-lepton unification mass relation. We find that upcoming experiments DUNE as well as LEGEND and nEXO offer good chances of exploring a substantial region of neutrino parameters.

Towards a complete $Δ(27) \times SO(10)$ SUSY GUT

We propose a renormalisable model based on $Δ(27)$ family symmetry with an $SO(10)$ grand unified theory (GUT) leading to a novel form of spontaneous geometrical CP violation. The symmetries, including $Δ(27)$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{9} \times \mathbb{Z}_{12} \times \mathbb{Z}_{4}^{R}$, are broken close to the GUT breaking scale to yield the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with the standard R-parity. $SO(10)$ is broken via $SU(5)$ with doublet-triplet splitting achieved by a version of the Dimopoulos-Wilczek (missing VEV) mechanism. Low-scale Yukawa structure is dictated by the coupling of matter to $ Δ(27) $ antitriplets $ \barϕ $ whose VEVs are aligned in the CSD3 directions by the superpotential. Light physical Majorana neutrinos masses emerge from a specific implementation of the seesaw mechanism within $SO(10)$. The model predicts a normal neutrino mass hierarchy with the best-fit lightest neutrino mass $ m_1 = 0.13 $ meV and the PMNS mixing parameters $θ^l_{13} \approx 8.35^{\circ}$, $θ^l_{12}\approx 34^{\circ}$, $θ^l_{23}\approx 43^{\circ}$ and an oscillation phase $δ^l\approx -90^{\circ}$.

Left Right Model from Gauge Higgs Unification with Dark Matter

We propose a five dimensional model based on the idea of Gauge Higgs Unification with the gauge group $SO(5)\times U(1)$ in Randall-Sundrum spacetime. We obtain a Left-Right symmetric model with a stable scalar therefore, a dark matter candidate. This scalar scalar obtains a vacuum expectation value which gives mass to the top quark in the bulk through the Hosotani Mechanism. All the other fermions from the Standard Model are localized on a brane and obtain their mass from the vacuum expectation value of a brane localized scalar. This scalar fits the observed Higgs boson data. We are able to fit all the Standard Model observables while evading constraints.

Leptogenesis in minimal predictive seesaw models

We estimate the Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) arising from leptogenesis within a class of minimal predictive seesaw models involving two right-handed neutrinos and simple Yukawa structures with one texture zero. The two right-handed neutrinos are dominantly responsible for the "atmospheric" and "solar" neutrino masses with Yukawa couplings to $(ν_e, ν_μ, ν_τ)$ proportional to $(0,1,1)$ and $(1,n,n-2)$, respectively, where $n$ is a positive integer. The neutrino Yukawa matrix is therefore characterised by two proportionality constants with their relative phase providing a leptogenesis-PMNS link, enabling the lightest right-handed neutrino mass to be determined from neutrino data and the observed BAU. We discuss an $SU(5)$ SUSY GUT example, where $A_4$ vacuum alignment provides the required Yukawa structures with $n=3$, while a $\mathbb{Z}_9$ symmetry fixes the relatives phase to be a ninth root of unity.

Towards a complete $A_4 \times SU(5)$ SUSY GUT

We propose a renormalisable model based on $A_4$ family symmetry with an $SU(5)$ grand unified theory (GUT) which leads to the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with a two right-handed neutrino seesaw mechanism. Discrete $\mathbb{Z}_9\times \mathbb{Z}_6$ symmetry provides the fermion mass hierarchy in both the quark and lepton sectors, while $\mathbb{Z}_4^R$ symmetry is broken to $\mathbb{Z}_2^R$, identified as usual R-parity. Proton decay is highly suppressed by these symmetries. We discuss both the $A_4$ and $SU(5)$ symmetry breaking sectors, including doublet-triplet splitting, Higgs mixing and the origin of the $μ$ term. The model provides an excellent fit (better than one sigma) to all quark and lepton (including neutrino) masses and mixing with spontaneous CP violation. With the $A_4$ vacuum alignments, $(0,1,1)$ and $(1,3,1)$, the model predicts the entire PMNS mixing matrix with no free parameters, up to a relative phase, selected to be $2π/3$ from a choice of the nine complex roots of unity, providing a direct link between neutrino oscillations and leptogenesis.

Electroweak scale neutrinos and decaying dark matter

We explore the scalar phenomenology of a model of electroweak scale neutrinos that incorporates the presence of a lepton number violating singlet scalar. An analysis of the pseudoscalar-Majoron field associated to this singlet field is carried out in order to verify the viability of the model and to restrict its parameter space. In particular we study the Majoron decay $J \to νν$ and use the bounds on the Majoron mass and width obtained in a modified Majoron Decaying Dark Matter scenario.
