On the transmission of turbulent structures across the Earth's Bow Shock

Collisionless shocks and plasma turbulence are crucial ingredients for a broad range of astrophysical systems. The shock-turbulence interaction, and in particular the transmission of fully developed turbulence across the quasi-perpendicular Earth's bow shock, is here addressed using a combination of spacecraft observations and local numerical simulations. An alignment between the Wind (upstream) and MMS (downstream) spacecraft is used to study the transmission of turbulent structures across the shock, revealing an increase of their magnetic helicity content in its downstream. Local kinetic simulations, in which the dynamics of turbulent structures is followed through their transmission across a perpendicular shock, confirm this scenario, revealing that the observed magnetic helicity increase is associated with the compression of turbulent structures at the shock front.

Diagnosing collisionless energy transfer using field-particle correlations: Alfven-Ion Cyclotron Turbulence

We apply field-particle correlations -- a technique that tracks the time-averaged velocity-space structure of the energy density transfer rate between electromagnetic fields and plasma particles -- to data drawn from a hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell simulation of Alfvén Ion-Cyclotron turbulence. Energy transfer in this system is expected to include both Landau and cyclotron wave-particle resonances, unlike previous systems to which the field-particle correlation technique has been applied. In this simulation, the energy transfer rate mediated by the parallel electric field $E_\parallel$ comprises approximately $60\%$ of the total rate, with the remainder mediated by the perpendicular electric field $E_\perp$. The parallel electric field resonantly couples to protons, with the canonical bipolar velocity-space signature of Landau damping identified at many points throughout the simulation. The energy transfer mediated by $E_\perp$ preferentially couples to particles with $v_{tp} \lesssim v_\perp \lesssim 3 v_{tp}$ in agreement with the expected formation of a cyclotron diffusion plateau. Our results demonstrate clearly that the field-particle correlation technique can distinguish distinct channels of energy transfer using single-point measurements, even at points in which multiple channels act simultaneously, and can be used to determine quantitatively the rates of particle energization in each channel.

Exact hybrid-kinetic equilibria for magnetized plasmas with shearing flows

Context. Magnetized plasmas characterized by shearing flows are present in many natural contexts, such as the Earth's magnetopause and the solar wind. The collisionless nature of involved plasmas requires a kinetic description. When the width of the shear layer is of the order of ion scales, the Hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell approach can be adopted. Aims. The aim of the paper is to derive explicit forms for stationary configurations of magnetized plasmas with planar shearing flows, within the Hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell description. Two configurations are considered: the first with a uniform magnetic field obliquely directed with respect to the bulk velocity; and the second with a uniform-magnitude variable-direction magnetic field. Methods. Stationary ion distribution functions are obtained by combining single-particle constant of motions, which are derived studying particle dynamics. Preliminary information about the form of the distribution functions are analytically derived considering a local approximation for the background electromagnetic field. Then, a numerical method is set up to obtain a solution for general profiles. Results. The explicit distribution functions that are found allow to obtain profiles of density, bulk velocity, temperature and heat flux. Anisotropy and agyrotropy in the distribution function are also evaluated. Stationarity of the solution during numerical simulations is checked in the uniform oblique magnetic field case. Conclusions. The considered configurations can be used as models for the Earth's magnetopause in simulations of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability.

Kinetic Alfvén wave generation by velocity shear in collisionless plasmas

The evolution of a linearly-polarized, long-wavelength Alfvén wave --propagating in a collisionless magnetized plasma with a sheared parallel-directed velocity flow-- is here studied by means of two-dimensional hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell (HVM) simulations. The unperturbed sheared flow has been represented by an exact solution of the HVM set of equations (Malara {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. E 97, 053212), this avoiding spurious oscillations that would arise from the non-stationary initial state and inevitably affect the dynamics of the system. We have considered the evolution of both a small and a moderate amplitude Alfvén wave, in order to separate linear wave-shear flow couplings from kinetic effects, the latter being more relevant for larger wave amplitudes. The phase-mixing generated by the shear flow modifies the initial perturbation, leading to the formation of small-scale transverse fluctuations at scales comparable with the proton inertial length. By analyzing both the polarization and group velocity of perturbations in the shear regions, we identify them as Kinetic Alfvén Waves (KAWs). In the moderate amplitude run, kinetic effects distort the proton distribution function in the shear region. This leads to the formation of a proton beam, at the Alfvén speed and parallel to the magnetic field. Such a feature, due to the parallel electric field associated with KAWs, positively compares with solar-wind observations of suprathermal ions' populations, suggesting that it may be related to the presence of ion-scales KAW-like fluctuations.

Local and global properties of energy transfer in models of plasma turbulence

The nature of the turbulent energy transfer rate is studied using direct numerical simulations of weakly collisional space plasmas. This is done comparing results obtained from hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell simulations of colissionless plasmas, Hall-magnetohydrodynamics, and Landau fluid models reproducing low-frequency kinetic effects, such as the Landau damping. In this partially developed turbulent scenario, estimates of the local and global scaling properties of different energy channels are obtained using a proxy of the local energy transfer (LET). This approach provides information on the structure of energy fluxes, under the assumption that the turbulent cascade transfers most of the energy that is then dissipated at small scales by various kinetic processes in this kind of plasmas.

Collisional effects on the numerical recurrence in Vlasov-Poisson simulations

The initial state recurrence in numerical simulations of the Vlasov-Poisson system is a well-known phenomenon. Here we study the effect on recurrence of artificial collisions modeled through the Lenard-Bernstein operator [A. Lenard and I. B. Bernstein, Phys. Rev. 112, 1456-1459 (1958)]. By decomposing the linear Vlasov-Poisson system in the Fourier-Hermite space, the recurrence problem is investigated in the linear regime of the damping of a Langmuir wave and of the onset of the bump-on-tail instability. The analysis is then confirmed and extended to the nonlinear regime through a Eulerian collisional Vlasov-Poisson code. It is found that, despite being routinely used, an artificial collisionality is not a viable way of preventing recurrence in numerical simulations without compromising the kinetic nature of the solution. Moreover, it is shown how numerical effects associated to the generation of fine velocity scales, can modify the physical features of the system evolution even in nonlinear regime. This means that filamentation-like phenomena, usually associated with low amplitude fluctuations contexts, can play a role even in nonlinear regime.

Safe Human-Inspired Mesoscopic Hybrid Automaton for Autonomous Vehicles

In this paper a mesoscopic hybrid model, i.e. a microscopic hybrid model that takes into account macroscopic parameters, is introduced for designing a human-inspired Adaptive Cruise Control. A control law is proposed with the design goal of replacing and imitating the behaviour of a human driver in a car-following situation where lane changes are possible. First, a microscopic hybrid automaton model is presented, based on human psycho-physical behavior, for both longitudinal and lateral vehicle control. Then a rule for changing time headway on the basis of macroscopic quantities is used to describe the interaction among next vehicles and their impact on driver performance. Simulation results show the advantages of the mesoscopic model. A feasibility analysis of the needed communication network is also presented.

Vlasov simulations of multi-ion plasma turbulence in the solar wind

Hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell simulations are employed to investigate the role of kinetic effects in a two-dimensional turbulent multi-ion plasma, composed of protons, alpha particles and fluid electrons. In the typical conditions of the solar-wind environment, and in situations of decaying turbulence, the numerical results show that the velocity distribution functions of both ion species depart from the typical configuration of thermal equilibrium. These non-Maxwellian features are quantified through the statistical analysis of the temperature anisotropy, for both protons and alpha particles, in the reference frame given by the local magnetic field. Anisotropy is found to be higher in regions of high magnetic stress. Both ion species manifest a preferentially perpendicular heating, although the anisotropy is more pronounced for the alpha particles, according with solar wind observations. Anisotropy of the alpha particle, moreover, is correlated to the proton anisotropy, and also depends on the local differential flow between the two species. Evident distortions of the particle distribution functions are present, with the production of bumps along the direction of the local magnetic field. The physical phenomenology recovered in these numerical simulations reproduces very common measurements in the turbulent solar wind, suggesting that the multi-ion Vlasov model constitutes a valid approach to the understanding of the nature of complex kinetic effects in astrophysical plasmas.
