On the transmission of turbulent structures across the Earth's Bow Shock

Collisionless shocks and plasma turbulence are crucial ingredients for a broad range of astrophysical systems. The shock-turbulence interaction, and in particular the transmission of fully developed turbulence across the quasi-perpendicular Earth's bow shock, is here addressed using a combination of spacecraft observations and local numerical simulations. An alignment between the Wind (upstream) and MMS (downstream) spacecraft is used to study the transmission of turbulent structures across the shock, revealing an increase of their magnetic helicity content in its downstream. Local kinetic simulations, in which the dynamics of turbulent structures is followed through their transmission across a perpendicular shock, confirm this scenario, revealing that the observed magnetic helicity increase is associated with the compression of turbulent structures at the shock front.

Coherent events at ion scales in the inner Heliosphere: \textit{Parker Solar Probe} observations during the first Encounter

\textit{Parker Solar Probe} has shown the ubiquitous presence of strong magnetic field deflections, namely switchbacks, during its first perihelion where it was embedded in a highly Alfvénic slow stream. Here, we study the turbulent magnetic fluctuations around ion scales in three intervals characterized by a different switchback activity, identified by the behaviour of the magnetic field radial component, $B_r$. \textit{Quiet} ($B_r$ does not show significant fluctuations), \textit{weak} ($B_r$ has strong fluctuations but no reversals) and \textit{strong} ($B_r$ has full reversals) periods show a different behaviour also for ion quantities and Alfvénicity. However, the spectral analysis shows that each stream is characterized by the typical Kolmogorov/Kraichnan power law in the inertial range, followed by a break around the characteristic ion scales. This frequency range is characterized by strong intermittent activity, with the presence of non-compressive coherent structures, such as current sheets and vortex-like structures, and wave packets, identified as ion cyclotron modes. Although, all these intermittent events have been detected in the three periods, they have a different influence in each of them. Current sheets are dominant in the \textit{strong} period, wave packets are the most common in the \textit{quiet} interval; while, in the \textit{weak} period, a mixture of vortices and wave packets is observed. This work provides an insight into the heating problem in collisionless plasmas, fitting in the context of the new solar missions, and, especially for \textit{Solar Orbiter}, which will allow an accurate magnetic connectivity analysis, to link the presence of different intermittent events to the source region.

Local and global properties of energy transfer in models of plasma turbulence

The nature of the turbulent energy transfer rate is studied using direct numerical simulations of weakly collisional space plasmas. This is done comparing results obtained from hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell simulations of colissionless plasmas, Hall-magnetohydrodynamics, and Landau fluid models reproducing low-frequency kinetic effects, such as the Landau damping. In this partially developed turbulent scenario, estimates of the local and global scaling properties of different energy channels are obtained using a proxy of the local energy transfer (LET). This approach provides information on the structure of energy fluxes, under the assumption that the turbulent cascade transfers most of the energy that is then dissipated at small scales by various kinetic processes in this kind of plasmas.

Observational quantification of three-dimensional anisotropies and scalings of space plasma turbulence at kinetic scales

A statistical survey of spectral anisotropy of space plasma turbulence is performed using five years measurements from MMS in the magnetosheath. By measuring the five-point second-order structure functions of the magnetic field, we have for the first time quantified the three-dimensional anisotropies and scalings at sub-ion-scales ($<$ 100 km). In the local reference frame $(\hat L_{\perp}, \hat l_{\perp}, \hat l_{\parallel})$ defined with respect to local mean magnetic field $\boldsymbol {B}_0$ (Chen et al. 2012), the "statistical eddies" are found to be mostly elongated along $\boldsymbol {B}_0$ and shortened in the direction perpendicular to both $\boldsymbol {B}_0$ and local field fluctuations. From several $d_i$ (ion inertial length) toward $\sim$ 0.05 $d_i$, the ratio between eddies' parallel and perpendicular lengths features a trend of rise then fall, whereas the anisotropy in the perpendicular plane appears scale-invariant. Specifically, the anisotropy relations for the total magnetic field at 0.1-1.0 $d_i$ are obtained as $l_{\parallel} \simeq 2.44 \cdot l_{\perp}^{0.71}$, and $L_{\perp} \simeq 1.58 \cdot l_{\perp}^{1.08}$, respectively. Our results provide new observational evidence to compare with phenomenological models and numerical simulations, which may help to better understand the nature of kinetic scale turbulence.

Vlasov simulations of multi-ion plasma turbulence in the solar wind

Hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell simulations are employed to investigate the role of kinetic effects in a two-dimensional turbulent multi-ion plasma, composed of protons, alpha particles and fluid electrons. In the typical conditions of the solar-wind environment, and in situations of decaying turbulence, the numerical results show that the velocity distribution functions of both ion species depart from the typical configuration of thermal equilibrium. These non-Maxwellian features are quantified through the statistical analysis of the temperature anisotropy, for both protons and alpha particles, in the reference frame given by the local magnetic field. Anisotropy is found to be higher in regions of high magnetic stress. Both ion species manifest a preferentially perpendicular heating, although the anisotropy is more pronounced for the alpha particles, according with solar wind observations. Anisotropy of the alpha particle, moreover, is correlated to the proton anisotropy, and also depends on the local differential flow between the two species. Evident distortions of the particle distribution functions are present, with the production of bumps along the direction of the local magnetic field. The physical phenomenology recovered in these numerical simulations reproduces very common measurements in the turbulent solar wind, suggesting that the multi-ion Vlasov model constitutes a valid approach to the understanding of the nature of complex kinetic effects in astrophysical plasmas.
