Measurement-based VLC channel characterization for I2V communications in a real urban scenario

Visible light communication (VLC) is nowadays envisaged as a promising technology to enable new classes of services in intelligent transportation systems ranging, e.g., from assisted driving to autonomous vehicles. The assessment of the performance of VLC for automotive applications requires as a basic step a model of the transmission pattern and propagation of the VLC signal when real traffic-lights and road scenarios are involved. In this paper an experimental measurement campaign has been carried out by using a regular traffic-light as source (red light) and a photoreceiver positioned, statically, at different distances and heights along the road. A linear regression technique is used to come up with different propagation models. The proposed models have been compared, in terms of accuracy and complexity, to the conventional Lambertian model to describe the VLC channel in a real urban scenario. The proposed models provides a significant higher accuracy with comparable complexity.

Quantum Internet: Networking Challenges in Distributed Quantum Computing

The Quantum Internet is envisioned as the final stage of the quantum revolution, opening fundamentally new communications and computing capabilities, including the distributed quantum computing. But the Quantum Internet is governed by the laws of quantum mechanics. Phenomena with no counterpart in classical networks, such as no-cloning, quantum measurement, entanglement and teleporting, impose very challenging constraints for the network design. Specifically, classical network functionalities, ranging from error-control mechanisms to overhead-control strategies, are based on the assumption that classical information can be safely read and copied. But this assumption does not hold in the Quantum Internet. As a consequence, the design of the Quantum Internet requires a major network-paradigm shift to harness the quantum mechanics specificities. The goal of this work is to shed light on the challenges and the open problems of the Quantum Internet design. To this aim, we first introduce some basic knowledge of quantum mechanics, needed to understand the differences between a classical and a quantum network. Then, we introduce quantum teleportation as the key strategy for transmitting quantum information without physically transferring the particle that stores the quantum information or violating the principles of the quantum mechanics. Finally, the key research challenges to design quantum communication networks are described.

Quantum state reconstruction on Atom-Chips

We realize on an Atom-Chip a practical, experimentally undemanding, tomographic reconstruction algorithm relying on the time-resolved measurements of the atomic population distribution among atomic internal states. More specifically, we estimate both the state density matrix as well as the dephasing noise present in our system by assuming complete knowledge of the Hamiltonian evolution. The proposed scheme is based on routinely performed measurements and established experimental procedures, hence providing a simplified methodology for quantum technological applications.

Robust luminescence of the silicon-vacancy center in diamond at high temperatures

We performed high-temperature luminescence studies of silicon-vacancy color centers obtained by ion implantation in single crystal diamond. We observed reduction of the integrated fluorescence upon increasing temperature, ascribable to a transition channel with an activation energy of 180 meV that populates a shelving state. Nonetheless, the signal decreased only 50% and 75% with respect to room temperature at 500 K and 700 K, respectively. In addition, the color center is found highly photostable at temperatures exceeding 800 K. The luminescence of this color center is thus extremely robust even at large temperatures and it holds promise for novel diamond-based light-emitting devices.

Stochastic Quantum Zeno by Large Deviation Theory

Quantum measurements are crucial to observe the properties of a quantum system, which however unavoidably perturb its state and dynamics in an irreversible way. Here we study the dynamics of a quantum system while being subject to a sequence of projective measurements applied at random times. In the case of independent and identically distributed intervals of time between consecutive measurements, we analytically demonstrate that the survival probability of the system to remain in the projected state assumes a large-deviation (exponentially decaying) form in the limit of an infinite number of measurements. This allows us to estimate the typical value of the survival probability, which can therefore be tuned by controlling the probability distribution of the random time intervals. Our analytical results are numerically tested for Zeno-protected entangled states, which also demonstrates that the presence of disorder in the measurement sequence further enhances the survival probability when the Zeno limit is not reached (as it happens in experiments). Our studies provide a new tool for protecting and controlling the amount of quantum coherence in open complex quantum systems by means of tunable stochastic measurements.

Experimental realization of quantum zeno dynamics

It is generally impossible to probe a quantum system without disturbing it. However, it is possible to exploit the back-action of quantum measurements and strong couplings to tailor and protect the coherent evolution of a quantum system. This is a profound and counterintuitive phenomenon known as quantum Zeno dynamics (QZD). Here we demonstrate QZD with a rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate in a five-level Hilbert space. We harness measurements and strong couplings to dynamically disconnect different groups of quantum states and constrain the atoms to coherently evolve inside a two-level subregion. In parallel to the foundational importance due to the realization of a dynamical superselection rule and the theory of quantum measurements, this is an important step forward in protecting and controlling quantum dynamics and, broadly speaking, quantum information processing.

Optimal preparation of quantum states on an atom chip device

Atom chips provide compact and robust platforms towards practical quantum technologies. A quick and faithful preparation of arbitrary input states for these systems is crucial but represents a very challenging experimental task. This is especially difficult when the dynamical evolution is noisy and unavoidable setup imperfections have to be considered. Here, we experimentally prepare with very high small errors different internal states of a Rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate realized on an atom chip. As a possible application of our scheme, we apply it to improve the sensitivity of an atomic interferometer.

Fisica e fumetti: Paperone ed il deposito sotterraneo

I fumetti, come i film, spesso utilizzano idee scientifiche "fantasiose". ----- Comics and cartoon movies sometimes exploit fictitious scientific ideas. It is often the case that these ideas, althought wrong, actually reflect the popular vision of some natural phenomenon. We do not refer here to the implicit violation of physical laws in fictions, a practice allowed by the underlining "poetic licence" of comics. However, sometimes wrong scientific "explanations" are proposed, and those may be accepted by the public without further inspection. On the other hand, these errors may be a good starting point for a didactic illustration of physical principles. We analyse here the comics Paperone ed il deposito sotterraneo (Uncle Scrooge and the underground money bin) by Perrin e Cavezzano.
