Understanding the first measurement of $\mathcal{B}(B\to K ν\barν)$

Recently, Belle II reported on the first measurement of $\mathcal{B}(B^\pm\to K^\pm ν\barν)$ which appears to be almost $3σ$ larger than predicted in the Standard Model. We point out the important correlation with $\mathcal{B}(B\to K^{\ast} ν\barν)$ so that the measurement of that decay mode could help restraining the possible options for building the model of New Physics. We then try to interpret this new experimental result in terms of physics beyond the Standard Model by using SMEFT and find that a scenario with coupling only to $τ$ can accommodate the current experimental constraints but fails in getting a desired $R_{D^{(\ast )}}^\mathrm{exp}/R_{D^{(\ast )}}^\mathrm{SM}$, unless one turns the other SMEFT operators that are not related to $b\to s\ell\ell$ or/and $b\to sνν$.

Angular distributions of $\bar B \to D^{(\ast)}\ell\bar ν_\ell$ decays and search of New Physics

We derive the expressions for the full angular distributions of $\bar B\to D\ell\bar ν_\ell$ and $\bar B\to D^{\ast }\ell\bar ν_\ell$ decays and discuss the spectra on each angle separately. The coefficient functions, depending on helicity amplitudes, can then be combined in an ensemble of observables which can then be used to check for the presence of New Physics. We examine the sensitivity of each of these observables on the presence of non-Standard Model interaction terms at low energies. The expressions presented here are general and can be used for studying any other semileptonic pseudoscalar to pseudoscalar/vector meson decay. We also examine the problem of pollution of the $\bar B\to D^{\ast}(\to Dπ)_S\ell\bar ν_\ell$ decay sample by the $\bar B\to D_0^{\ast}(\to Dπ)\ell\bar ν_\ell$ events, and point out that a measurement of two particular quantities could clarify whether or not the $(Dπ)_{S-\rm wave}$ in the vicinity of $D^\ast$-peak is (approximately) described by the Breit-Wigner formula.

Can the new resonance at LHC be a CP-Odd Higgs boson?

A plausible explanation of the recent experimental indication of a resonance in the two-photon spectrum at LHC is that it corresponds to the CP-odd Higgs boson. We explore such a possibility in a generic framework of the two Higgs doublet models (2HDM), and combine $m_A \approx 750$GeV with the known $m_h =125.7(4)$~GeV to show that the charged Higgs boson and the other CP-even scalar masses become bounded from bellow and from above. We show that this possibility is also consistent with the electroweak precision data and the low energy observables, which we test in a few leptonic and semileptonic decay modes.

Lepton Flavor Violation in Exclusive $b\to s$ Decays

Starting from the general effective hamiltonian relevant to the $b\to s$ transitions, we derive the expressions for the full angular distributions of the $B \to K^{(\ast )} \ell_1 \ell_2$ decay modes, as well as for ${\cal B}(B_s \to \ell_1\ell_2 )$ ($\ell_1\neq \ell_2$). We point out the differences in the treatment of the lepton flavor violating modes with respect to the lepton flavor conserving ones. Concerning the relevant Wilson coefficients we evaluate them in two different scenarios: (i) The (pseudo-)scalar coefficients are obtained using the (pseudo-)scalar coupling extracted from the experimental non-zero value of ${\cal B}(h\to μτ)$, (ii) Revisiting a $Z^\prime$-model in which the flavor changing neutral couplings are allowed. We provide the numerical estimates of the branching fractions of the above-mentioned modes in both scenarios.

Lepton flavor violating decays of vector quarkonia and of the $Z$ boson

We address the impact of sterile fermions on the lepton flavor violating decays of quarkonia as well as of the $Z$ boson. We compute the relevant Wilson coefficients and show that the ${\rm B}(V\to\ell_α\ell_β)$, where $V=ϕ,ψ^{(n)}$, $Υ^{(n)},Z$ can be significantly enhanced in the case of large sterile fermion masses and a non-negligible active-sterile mixing. We illustrate that feature in a specific minimal realization of the inverse seesaw mechanism, known as $(2,3)$-ISS, and in an effective model in which the presence of non-standard sterile fermions is parameterized by means of one heavy sterile (Majorana) neutrino.

'Bs --> Ds l nu' near zero recoil in and beyond the Standard Model

We compute the normalization of the form factor entering the Bs --> Ds l nu decay amplitude by using numerical simulations of QCD on the lattice. From our study with Nf=2 dynamical light quarks, and by employing the maximally twisted Wilson quark action, we obtain in the continuum limit G(1) = 1.052(46). We also compute the scalar and tensor form factors in the region near zero recoil and find f0(t0)/f+(t0)=0.77(2), fT(t0,mb)/f+(t0)=1.08(7), for t0=11.5 GeV^2. These latter results are useful for searching the effects of physics beyond the Standard Model in Bs --> Ds l nu decays. Our results for the similar form factors relevant to the non-strange case indicate that the method employed here can be used to achieve the precision determination of the B --> D l nu decay amplitude as well.

Insight into $D/B\to π\ell ν_\ell$ decay using the pole models

After improving the knowledge about residua of the semileptonic form factor at its first two poles we show that $f_+^{Dπ}(q^2)$ is not saturated when compared with the experimental data. To fill the difference we approximate the rest of discontinuity by an effective pole and show that the data can be described very well with the position of the effective pole larger than the next excitation in the spectrum of $D^\ast$ state. The results of fits with experimental data also suggest the validity of superconvergence which in the pole models translates to a vanishing of the sum of residua of the form factor at all poles. A similar discussion in the case of $B\to π\ellν_\ell$ leads to the possibility of extracting $\vert V_{ub}\vert$, the error of which appears to be dominated by $g_{B^\ast Bπ}$, which can be nowadays computed on the lattice. In evaluating the residua of the form factors at their nearest pole we needed the vector meson decay constants $f_{D^\ast}$ and $f_{B^\ast}$, which we computed by using the numerical simulations of QCD on the lattice with $N_{\rm f}=2$ dynamical quarks. We obtain, $f_{D^\ast}/f_D=1.208(27)$ and $f_{B^\ast}/f_B=1.051(17)$.

Lattice QCD and QCD Sum Rule determination of the decay constants of eta_c, J/psi and hc states

We compute the decay constants of the lowest ccbar-states with quantum numbers J(PC)=0(-+) [eta_c], 1(--) [J/psi], and 1(+-) [hc] by using lattice QCD and QCD sum rules. We consider the coupling of J/psi to both the vector and tensor currents. Lattice QCD results are obtained from the unquenched (Nf=2) simulations using twisted mass QCD at four lattice spacings, allowing us to take the continuum limit. On the QCD sum rule side we use the moment sum rules. The results are then used to discuss the rate of eta_c --> gamma gamma decay, and to comment on the factorization in B --> X K decays, with X being either eta_c or J/psi.

Lattice QCD estimate of the $η_{c}(2S)\to J/ψγ$ decay rate

We compute the hadronic matrix element relevant to the physical radiative decay $η_{c}(2S)\to J/ψγ$ by means of lattice QCD. We use the (maximally) twisted mass QCD action with Nf=2 light dynamical quarks and from the computations made at four lattice spacings we were able to take the continuum limit. The value of the mass ratio $m_{η_c(2S)}/m_{η_c(1S)}$ we obtain is consistent with the experimental value, and our prediction for the form factor is $V^{η_{c}(2S)\to J/ψγ}(0)\equiv V_{12}(0)=0.32(6)(2)$, leading to $Γ(η_c (2S) \to J/ψγ) = (15.7\pm 5.7)$ keV, which is much larger than $Γ(ψ(2S) \to η_cγ)$ and within reach of modern experiments.

Lattice QCD study of $B_s\to D_s \ell \barν_\ell$ decay near zero recoil

We study the hadronic matrix elements describing the $B_s \to D_s\ell \barν_\ell$ decay in and beyond the Standard Model. By using the twisted mass QCD on the lattice with $N_f=2$ dynamical flavors we compute the normalization $\mathscr G_s(1)$ of the form factor dominating $B_s\to D_s \ell \barν_\ell$ in the SM. We also make the first lattice determination of $F_0(q^2)/F_+(q^2)$ and $F_T(q^2)/F_+(q^2)$ near zero recoil (near $q^2_{\rm max}$). We briefly discuss the non-strange case $B \to D\ell \barν_\ell$ as well.

On the significance of B-decays to radially excited D

We discuss the possibilities of testing the recent claims of a relatively large value of the B --> D' transition form factor through B0--> D' pi+ and B- --> D' pi- decay modes. To estimate the width of the latter we need the decay constant of the radially excited D-meson that we computed in lattice QCD with Nf=2 dynamical flavors and after taking the continuum limit we found f(D')=117(25) MeV. We also provide an update for the values of the D-meson decay constants obtained by using maximally twisted mass QCD.

Radiative decays of charmonia on the lattice

We present the results of our lattice QCD study of the hadronic matrix elements relevant to the physical radiative J/psi -> eta_c gamma and hc -> eta_c gamma decays. From computations with Nf=2 dynamical quark in twisted mass QCD at four lattice spacings, we were able to take the continuum limit and obtained Gamma(J/psi -> eta_c gamma) = 2.64(11) keV and Gamma(hc -> eta_c gamma) = 0.72(5) MeV. We also computed the the hyperfine splitting and found that it does not depend from the sea quark mass and we obtain Delta = m_J/psi - m_eta_c = 112(4) MeV.

Testing the Standard Model in $B \to D τ\bar ν$ decay with minimal theory input

Recent experimental results for the ratio of the branching fractions of $\bar B \to D^{(*)}τν_τ$ and $B\to D^{(*)} μν_μ$ decays came as a surprise and lead to a discussion of possibility to constraining new physics through these modes. Here we focus on $Br(B \to D τ\barν_τ)/Br(B \to D μ\barν_μ)$ and argue that the result is consistent with the Standard Model within $2\,σ$ and that the test of compatibility of this ratio with the Standard Model can be done experimentally with a minimal theory input. We also show that these two decay channels can provide us with quite good constraints of the new physics couplings.

Theoretical estimate of the $D^* \to Dπ$ decay rate

We present the results of our lattice QCD study of the $g_{D^* Dπ}i$ coupling, relevant to the $D^\ast \to Dπ$ decay. Our computation is made on the gauge field configurations that include $N_f=2$ dynamical light quarks by using the twisted mass QCD action. From the results obtained at four different lattice spacings we were able to take for the first time the continuum limit of this quantity computed on the lattice. Our final value, $g_c=0.53(3)(3)$, leads to $Γ(D^{\ast +}\to \bar{D}^0 π^+)= (50\pm 5\pm 6)$ keV, and is in good agreement with the experimental results for the width of the charged $D^\ast$-meson.

$\bar B\to Dτ\bar ν_τ$ vs. $\bar B\to Dμ\bar ν_μ$

Recent experimental results for the ratio of the branching fractions of $\bar B\to D^{(*)}τ\bar ν_τ$ and $\bar B\to D^{(*)}μ\bar ν_μ$ decays came as a surprise and lead to a discussion of possibility to constraining New Physics through these modes. Here we focus on ${\cal B}(\bar B\to Dτ\bar ν_τ)/{\cal B}(\bar B\to Dμ\bar ν_μ)$ and argue that the result is consistent with the Standard Model within $2σ$, and that the test of compatibility of this ratio with the Standard Model can be done experimentally with a minimal theory input. We also show that these two decay channels can provide us with quite good constraints of the New Physics couplings.

Complementarity of Bs->mu+mu- and B-> K l+l- in New Physics searches

This year, LHC provided a very stringent bound on Br(Bs->mu+mu-), bringing it closer to the value predicted by the Standard Model (SM). Bs->mu+mu- was believed to be the golden mode at LHCb to find SUSY because a large enhancement was expected in the regime of moderate and large values of tanb. Other scenarios are still possible and a correlation with other decay channels is needed. We show that a complementary information on New Physics (NP) can be obtained model-indepedently from the B-> K l+l- decay mode. We provide a prediction Br(B-> K l+l-) based on the first lattice QCD results for all three relevant form factors, f0(q^2), f+(q^2) and fT(q^2). We were then able to provide the model-independent bounds on the complex couplings to scalar and pseudoscalr operators in the b->s sector.

Complementarity of the constraints on New Physics from B_s -> mu+ mu- and from B -> K l+l- decays

We discuss the advantages of combining the experimental bound on Br(B_s -> mu+ mu-) and the measured Br(B -> K l+l-) to get the model independent constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model. Since the two decays give complementary information, one can study not only the absolute values of the Wilson coefficients that are zero in the Standard Model, but also their phases. To identify the sector in which the new physics might appear, information about the shapes of the transverse asymmetries in B -> K* l+l- at low q^2's can be particularly useful. We also emphasize the importance of measuring the forward-backward asymmetry in B -> K l+l- decay at large q^2's.

D-meson decay constants and a check of factorization in non-leptonic B-decays

We compute the vector meson decay constants fD*, fDs* from the simulation of twisted mass QCD on the lattice with Nf = 2 dynamical quarks. When combining their values with the pseudoscalar D(s)-meson decay constants, we were able (i) to show that the heavy quark spin symmetry breaking effects with the charm quark are large, fDs*/fDs = 1.26(3), and (ii) to check the factorization approximation in a few specific B-meson non-leptonic decay modes. Besides our main results, fD* = 278 \pm 13 \pm 10 MeV, and fDs* = 311 \pm 9 MeV, other phenomenologically interesting results of this paper are: fDs*/fD* = 1.16 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.06, fDs*/fD = 1.46 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.06, and fDs/fD* = 0.89 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.03. Finally, we correct the value for B(B0 \rightarrow D+ pi-) quoted by PDG, and find B(B0 \rightarrow D+ pi-) = (7.8 \pm 1.4) \times 10-7. Alternatively, by using the ratios discussed in this paper, we obtain B(B0 \rightarrow D+ pi-) = (8.3 \pm 1.0 \pm 0.8)\times10-7.

Future prospects for the determination of the Wilson coefficient $C_{7γ}^\prime$

We discuss the possibilities of assessing a non-zero $C_{7γ}^\prime$ from the direct and the indirect measurements of the photon polarization in the exclusive $b \to sγ^{(*)}$ decays. We focus on three methods and explore the following three decay modes: $B \to K^*(\to K_Sπ^0)γ$, $B \to K_1(\to Kππ)γ$, and $B \to K^*(\to Kπ)\ell^+\ell^-$. By studying different New Physics scenarios we show that the future measurement of conveniently defined observables in these decays could provide us with the full determination of $C_{7γ}$ and $C_{7γ}^\prime$.

Impact of $B\to K^\ast_0 \ell^+\ell^-$ on the New Physics search in $B\to K^\ast \ell^+\ell^-$ decay

We discuss the uncertainty related to the amount of unwanted $B\to K_0^\ast (Kπ)\ell^+\ell^-$ events in the sample of $B\to K^\ast (Kπ)\ell^+\ell^-$. Those events can increase the measured differential decay rate by up to 10% in the low $q^2$ region, and can be a source of non-negligible uncertainty in the full angular distribution of the $B\to K^\ast (Kπ)\ell^+\ell^-$ decay. Although the transverse asymmetries should be unaffected by the presence of the $S$-wave $Kπ$ pairs, coming from the scalar $K_0^\ast$ meson, we show that in practice their normalization might be sensitive to those events and could entail a sizable uncertainty in transverse asymmetries around $q^2=2 GeV^2$. For other $q^2$'s that error is under about 10%.

Lattice QCD study of the radiative decays $J/ψ\to η_cγ$ and $h_c\to η_cγ$

We present the results of our lattice QCD study of the hadronic matrix elements relevant to the physical radiative $J/ψ\to η_cγ$ and $h_c\to η_cγ$ decays. We used the twisted mass QCD action with $N_{\rm f}=2$ light dynamical quarks and from the computations made at four lattice spacings we were able to take the continuum limit. Besides the form factors parameterizing the above decays we also computed: (i) the hyperfine splitting and obtained $Δ= 112\pm 4$ MeV, (ii) the annihilation constant $f_{J/ψ}$ which agrees with the one inferred from the measured $Γ(J/ψ\to e^+e^-)$.

On transverse asymmetries in B --> K* l+l-

We discuss the three independent asymmetries, AT(2)(q2), AT(im)(q2) and AT(re)(q2), that one can build from the amplitudes A_perp(q2) and A_par(q2). These quantities are expected to be accessible from the new B-physics experiments, they are sensitive to the presence of new physics, and they are not significantly sensitive to hadronic uncertainties. Studying their low q2-dependence can be helpful in discerning among various possible new physics scenarios. All three asymmetries can be extracted from the full angular analysis of B-->K* l+l-. Our formulas apply to both the massless and the massive lepton case.

Pionic couplings to the lowest heavy-light mesons of positive and negative parity

We present the method and compute the strong couplings of the lowest and first orbitally excited heavy-light mesons to a soft pion in the static heavy quark limit on the lattice. Besides the usual g^ and g couplings, we were able to make the first computation of the coupling h using the relevant radial distributions. Our results are obtained from the simulations of QCD with Nf=2 light Wilson-Clover quarks, combined with the improved static quark actions. The hierarchy among couplings that emerges from our study is g < g^ < h.

Spatial distributions in static heavy-light mesons: a comparison of quark models with lattice QCD

Lattice measurements of spatial distributions of the light quark bilinear densities in static mesons allow to test directly and in detail the wave functions of quark models. These distributions are gauge invariant quantities directly related to the spatial distribution of wave functions. We make a detailed comparison of the recent lattice QCD results with our own quark models, formulated previously for quite different purposes. We find a striking agreement not only between our two quark models, but also with the lattice QCD data for the ground state in an important range of distances up to about 4/GeV. Moreover the agreement extends to the L=1 states [j^P=(1/2)^+]. An explanation of several particular features completely at odds with the non-relativistic approximation is provided. A rather direct, somewhat unexpected and of course approximate relation between wave functions of certain quark models and QCD has been established.

D*-->Dpi and D*-->Dgamma decays: Axial coupling and Magnetic moment of D* meson

The axial coupling and the magnetic moment of D*-meson or, more specifically, the couplings g(D*Dpi) and g(D*Dgamma), encode the non-perturbative QCD effects describing the decays D*-->Dpi and D*-->Dgamma. We compute these quantities by means of lattice QCD with Nf=2 dynamical quarks, by employing the Wilson ("clover") action. On our finer lattice (a=0.065 fm) we obtain: g(D*Dpi)=20 +/- 2, and g(D0*D0gamma)=[2.0 +/- 0.6]/GeV. This is the first determination of g(D0*D0gamma) on the lattice. We also provide a short phenomenological discussion and the comparison of our result with experiment and with the results quoted in the literature.

g(B*Bpi)-coupling in the static heavy quark limit

By means of QCD simulations on the lattice, we compute the coupling of the heavy-light mesons to a soft pion in the static heavy quark limit. The gauge field configurations used in this calculations include the effect of N_f=2 dynamical Wilson quarks, while for the static quark propagator we use its improved form (so called HYP). On the basis of our results we obtain that the coupling g=0.44 +/- 0.03 (+0.07/-0.00), where the second error is flat (not gaussian).

Soft photons in semileptonic B \to D decays

Determination of V_cb in exclusive semileptonic decays is crucial consistency check against the V_cb determined inclusively. Anticipated precision of V_cb at the Super Flavor factory is ~1%, with most of the theoretical error due to hadronic form factor uncertainties. However, at this level of precision treating electromagnetic effects becomes inevitable. In addition to virtual photon corrections there are also emissions of real photons which are soft enough to avoid detection. The bremsstrahlung part is completely universal and is accounted for in the experimental analyses. However, the so-called structure dependent contribution, which probes the hadronic content of the process and is infrared finite, has been neglected so far. To this end, we estimated fraction of radiative events which are identified as semileptonic by experiment.

Chiral behavior of the B(s,d)-Bbar(s,d) mixing amplitude in the Standard Model and beyond

We compute the chiral logarithmic corrections to the Bd and Bs mixing amplitudes in the Standard Model and beyond. We then investigate the impact of the inclusion of the lowest-lying scalar heavy-light states to the decay constants and bag-parameters and show that this does not modify the pion chiral logarithms, but it does produce corrections which are competitive in size with the K- and eta-meson chiral logarithms. This conclusion is highly relevant to the lattice studies since the pion chiral logarithms represent the most important effect in guiding the chiral extrapolations of the lattice data for these quantities. Also important is to stress that the pion chiral logarithmic corrections are useful in guiding those extrapolations as long as Mpi << Delta, where Delta is the mass gap between the scalar and pseudoscalar heavy-light mesons.

Remarks on the hadronic matrix elements relevant to the SUSY K-Kbar mixing amplitude

We compute the 1-loop chiral corrections to the bag parameters which are needed for the discussion of the SUSY K-Kbar mixing problem in both finite and infinite volume. We then show how the bag parameters can be combined among themselves and with some auxiliary quantities and thus sensibly reduce the systematic errors due to chiral extrapolations as well as those due to finite volume artefacts present in the results obtained from lattice QCD. We also show that in some cases these advantages remain as such even after including the 2-loop chiral corrections. Similar discussion is also made for the K --> pi electro-weak penguin operators.

B --> pi and B --> K transitions in partially quenched chiral perturbation theory

We study the properties of the B-->pi and B-->K transition form factors in partially quenched QCD by using the approach of partially quenched chiral perturbation theory combined with the static heavy quark limit. We show that the form factors change almost linearly when varying the value of the sea quark mass, whereas the dependence on the valence quark mass contains both the standard and chirally divergent (quenched) logarithms. A simple strategy for the chiral extrapolations in the lattice studies with Nsea=2 is suggested. It consists of the linear extrapolations from the realistically accessible quark masses, first in the sea and then in the valence quark mass. From the present approach, we estimate the uncertainty induced by such extrapolations to be within 5%.

An Estimate of the K0-K0bar Mixing Amplitude

We computed the B_K parameter on the lattice by using a non-perturbatively improved Wilson action. From our quenched simulation, in the MSbar scheme and at mu=2 GeV, we obtain B_K=0.73(7)^{+0.05}_{-0.01}. To gain some insight in the systematic errors due to the use of the quenched approximation, we also made the unquenched computation with Wilson fermions. We do not observe any significant deviation with respect to the quenched result.

Improved Constraints on $B \to π\ell \barν_{\ell}$ Form Factors

The behavior of the $\bpi$ form factors in the entire physical range is examined in a model independent way. Unitarity bounds are further constrained by the lattice results (APE). From this analysis, we obtain $f^{+}(0) = 0.38 \pm .03$ if the $B^{*}$-pole dominance behavior is assumed. However, to get the information on the behavior of the form factor $f^{+}$, QSR results are included. We see the deviations from the pole dominance due to the contributions of the higher singularities which are to be treated with more precise lattice data.
