Multiscale analysis of a kinetic equation for mechanotaxis

We present a new kinetic equation for cell migration driven by mechanical interactions with the substrate, an effect not previously captured in kinetic models, and essential for explaining observed collective behaviors such as those in bacterial colonies. The model introduces an acceleration term that accounts for the dynamics of motile cells undergoing mechanotaxis, where extracellular signals modulate the forces arising from cell-substrate interactions. From this formulation, we derive a family of macroscopic limit equations and analyze their principal properties. In particular, we examine linear stability and pattern formation ability through theoretical analysis, supported by numerical simulations.

Compactness property of the linearized Boltzmann operator for a polyatomic gas undergoing resonant collisions

In this paper, we investigate a compactness property of the linearized Boltzmann operator in the context of a polyatomic gas whose molecules undergo resonant collisions. The peculiar structure of resonant collision rules allows to tensorize the problem into a velocity-related one, neighbouring the monatomic case, and an internal energy-related one. Our analysis is based on a specific treatment of the contributions due to the internal energy of the molecules. We also propose a geometric variant of Grad's proof of the same compactness property in the monatomic case.

Kinetic approach to the collective dynamics of the rock-paper-scissors binary game

This article studies the kinetic dynamics of the rock-paper-scissors binary game. We first prove existence and uniqueness of the solution of the kinetic equation and subsequently we prove the rigorous derivation of the quasi-invariant limit for two meaningful choices of the domain of definition of the independent variables. We notice that the domain of definition of the problem plays a crucial role and heavily influences the behavior of the solution. The rigorous proof of the relaxation limit does not need the use of entropy estimates for ensuring compactness.

On a nonlinear parabolic problem arising in the quantum diffusive description of a degenerate fermion gas

This article studies, both theoretically and numerically, a nonlinear drift-diffusion equation describing a gas of fermions in the zero-temperature limit. The equation is considered on a bounded domain whose boundary is divided into an "insulating" part, where homogeneous Neumann conditions are imposed, and a "contact" part, where nonhomogeneous Dirichlet data are assigned. The existence of stationary solutions for a suitable class of Dirichlet data is proven by assuming a simple domain configuration. The long-time behavior of the time-dependent solution, for more complex domain configurations, is investigated by means of numerical experiments.

The Logit lane assignment model: first results

The Logit lane assignment model has been introduced recently in order to describe multi-lane traffic flow from a macroscopic point of view. The model is based on the idea that each available lane has a specific utility for each driver, who chooses the lane with the highest utility. The model is expressed by a system of conservation laws with a smooth but implicitly defined flux function. The first aim of the paper is to explore on two data-sets how traffic data supports the fact that traffic speed constitutes an explanatory variable of lane assignment. Second the paper addresses the problem of discretization of the model. Several numerical schemes are proposed: Lax-Friedrichs, Euler-lagrange remap, Lagrange, and their convergence properties are illustrated on the treatment of the Riemann problem. Directions for future research are outlined.

The nonlinear diffusion limit for generalized Carleman models: the initial-boundary value problem

Consider the initial-boundary value problem for the 2-speed Carleman model of the Boltzmann equation of the kinetic theory of gases set in some bounded interval with boundary conditions prescribing the density of particles entering the interval. Under the usual parabolic scaling, a nonlinear diffusion limit is established for this problem. In fact, the techniques presented here allow treating generalizations of the Carleman system where the collision frequency is proportional to some power of the macroscopic density, with exponent in [-1,1].
