Monitoring water contaminants in coastal areas through ML algorithms leveraging atmospherically corrected Sentinel-2 data

Monitoring water contaminants is of paramount importance, ensuring public health and environmental well-being. Turbidity, a key parameter, poses a significant problem, affecting water quality. Its accurate assessment is crucial for safeguarding ecosystems and human consumption, demanding meticulous attention and action. For this, our study pioneers a novel approach to monitor the Turbidity contaminant, integrating CatBoost Machine Learning (ML) with high-resolution data from Sentinel-2 Level-2A. Traditional methods are labor-intensive while CatBoost offers an efficient solution, excelling in predictive accuracy. Leveraging atmospherically corrected Sentinel-2 data through the Google Earth Engine (GEE), our study contributes to scalable and precise Turbidity monitoring. A specific tabular dataset derived from Hong Kong contaminants monitoring stations enriches our study, providing region-specific insights. Results showcase the viability of this integrated approach, laying the foundation for adopting advanced techniques in global water quality management.

SEN2DWATER: A Novel Multispectral and Multitemporal Dataset and Deep Learning Benchmark for Water Resources Analysis

Climate change has caused disruption in certain weather patterns, leading to extreme weather events like flooding and drought in different parts of the world. In this paper, we propose machine learning methods for analyzing changes in water resources over a time period of six years, by focusing on lakes and rivers in Italy and Spain. Additionally, we release open-access code to enable the expansion of the study to any region of the world. We create a novel multispectral and multitemporal dataset, SEN2DWATER, which is freely accessible on GitHub. We introduce suitable indices to monitor changes in water resources, and benchmark the new dataset on three different deep learning frameworks: Convolutional Long Short Term Memory (ConvLSTM), Bidirectional ConvLSTM, and Time Distributed Convolutional Neural Networks (TD-CNNs). Future work exploring the many potential applications of this research is also discussed.

Near-Infrared Photometry of Globular Clusters Towards the Galactic Bulge: Observations and Photometric Metallicity Indicators

We present wide field JHKs photometry of 16 Galactic globular clusters located towards the Galactic bulge, calibrated on the 2MASS photometric system. Differential reddening corrections and statistical field star decontamination are employed for all of these clusters before fitting fiducial sequences to the cluster red giant branches (RGBs). Observed values and uncertainties are reported for several photometric features, including the magnitude of the RGB bump, tip, the horizontal branch (HB) and the slope of the upper RGB. The latest spectroscopically determined chemical abundances are used to build distance- and reddening-independent relations between observed photometric features and cluster metallicity, optimizing the sample size and metallicity baseline of these relations by supplementing our sample with results from the literature. We find that the magnitude different between the HB and the RGB bump can be used to predict metallicities, in terms of both iron abundance [Fe/H] and global metallicity [M/H], with a precision of better than 0.1 dex in all three near-IR bandpasses for relative metal-rich ([M/H]$\gtrsim$-1) clusters. Meanwhile, both the slope of the upper RGB and the magnitude difference between the RGB tip and bump are useful metallicity indicators over the entire sampled metallicity range (-2$\lesssim$[M/H]$\lesssim$0) with a precision of 0.2 dex or better, despite model predictions that the RGB slope may become unreliable at high (near-solar) metallicities. Our results agree with previous calibrations in light of the relevant uncertainties, and we discuss implications for clusters with controversial metallicities as well as directions for further investigation.

Wide Field Near-Infrared Photometry of 12 Galactic Globular Clusters: Observations Versus Models on the Red Giant Branch

We present wide field near-infrared photometry of 12 Galactic globular clusters, typically extending from the tip of the cluster red giant branch (RGB) to the main sequence turnoff. Using recent homogenous values of cluster distance, reddening and metallicity, the resulting photometry is directly compared to the predictions of several recent libraries of stellar evolutionary models. Of the sets of models investigated, Dartmouth and Victoria-Regina models best reproduce the observed RGB morphology, albeit with offsets in J-Ks color which vary in their significance in light of all sources of observational uncertainty. Therefore, we also present newly recalibrated relations between near-IR photometric indices describing the upper RGB versus cluster iron abundance as well as global metallicity. The influence of enhancements in alpha elements and helium are analyzed, finding that the former affect the morphology of the upper RGB in accord with model predictions. Meanwhile, the empirical relations we derive are in good agreement with previous results, and minor discrepancies can likely be attributed to differences in the assumed cluster distances and reddenings. In addition, we present measurements of the horizontal branch (HB) and RGB bump magnitudes, finding a non-negligible dependence of the near-IR HB magnitude on cluster metallicity. Lastly, we discuss the influence of assumed cluster distances, reddenings and metallicities on our results, finding that our empirical relations are generally insensitive to these factors to within their uncertainties.

Stroemgren - near-infrared photometry of the Baade's Window. I. The bulge globular cluster NGC6528 and the surrounding field

We present Stroemgren-NIR photometry of NGC6528 and its surroundings in the Baade's Window. uvby images were collected with EFOSC2@NTT, while NIR catalogs are based on VIRCAM@VISTA and SOFI@NTT data. The matching with HST photometry allowed us to obtain proper-motion-cleaned samples of cluster and bulge stars. The huge color sensitivity of Stroemgren-NIR CMDs helped us in disentangling age and metallicity effects. The RGB of NGC6528 is reproduced by scaled-solar isochrones with solar abundance or alpha-enhanced isochrones with the same iron content, and an age of t = 11+/-1 Gyr. These findings support literature age estimates for NGC6528. We also performed a theoretical metallicity calibration based on the Stroemgren index m1 and on visual-NIR colors for RGs, by adopting scaled-solar and alpha-enhanced models. We applied the calibration to estimate the metallicity of NGC6528, finding [Fe/H] = -0.04+/-0.02, with an intrinsic dispersion of 0.27 dex (by averaging abundances based on the scaled-solar [m], y - J and [m], y - K Metallicity-Index-Color relations), and of -0.11+/-0.01 (sig = 0.27 dex), by using the m1, y - J and m1, y - K relations. These findings support the results of Zoccali et al. (2004) which give [Fe/H] = -0.10+/-0.2, and a low alpha-enhancement, [alpha/Fe] = 0.1, and of Carretta et al. (2001), that find [Fe/H] = 0.07+/-0.01, with [alpha/Fe] = 0.2. By applying the scaled-solar MIC relations to Baade's window RGs, we find a metallicity distribution extending from [Fe/H] ~ -1.0 to ~ 1 dex, with peaks at [Fe/H] ~ -0.2 and +0.55 ([m], y - J and [m], y - K relations), and [Fe/H] ~ -0.25 and +0.4 (m1, y - J and m1, y - K relations). These findings are in good agreement with the spectroscopic studies of Hill et al. (2011) for the Baade's window, of Uttenthaler et al. (2012) for a region centered at (l,b) = (0, -10), and with the results of the ARGOS survey (Ness et al. 2013a).

Investigating potential planetary nebula/cluster pairs

Fundamental parameters characterizing the end-state of intermediate-mass stars may be constrained by discovering planetary nebulae (PNe) in open clusters (OCs). Cluster membership may be exploited to establish the distance, luminosity, age, and physical size for PNe, and the intrinsic luminosity and mass of its central star. Four potential PN-OC associations were investigated, to assess the cluster membership for the PNe. Radial velocities were measured from intermediate-resolution optical spectra, complemented with previous estimates in the literature. When the radial velocity study supported the PN/OC association, we analyzed if other parameters (e.g., age, distance, reddening, central star brightness) were consistent with this conclusion. Our measurements imply that the PNe VBe3 and HeFa1 are not members of the OCs NGC5999 and NGC6067, respectively, and likely belong to the background bulge population. Conversely, consistent radial velocities indicate that NGC2452/NGC2453 could be associated, but our results are not conclusive and additional observations are warranted. Finally, we demonstrate that all the available information point to He2-86 being a young, highly internally obscured PN member of NGC4463. New near-infrared photometry acquired via the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea ESO public survey was used in tandem with existing UBV photometry to measure the distance, reddening, and age of NGC4463, finding d=1.55+-0.10 kpc, E(B-V)=0.41+-0.02, and tau=65+-10 Myr, respectively. The same values should be adopted for the PN if the proposed cluster membership will be confirmed.

The VVV-SkZ pipeline: an automatic PSF-fitting photometric pipeline for the VVV survey

We present the VVV-SkZ_pipeline, a DAOPHOT-based photometric pipeline, created to perform PSF-fitting photometry of "VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea" (VVV) ESO Public Survey data. The pipeline replaces the user avoiding repetitive interaction in all the operations, retaining all of the benefits of the power and accuracy of the DAOPHOT suite. The pipeline provides an astrometrized photometric catalog reliable up to more than 2 magnitudes brighter than the saturation limit, where other techniques fail. It also produces deeper and more accurate photometry. These achievements allow the VVV-SkZ_pipeline to produce data well anchored to the selected standard photometric system and analyze important phenomena (i.e. TRGB, RGB slope, HB morphology, RR Lyrae), that other methods are not able to manage.

Double Horizontal Branches in NGC 6440 and NGC 6569 unveiled by the VVV Survey

We report the discovery of a peculiar horizontal branch (HB) in NGC 6440 and NGC 6569, two massive and metal-rich Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) located in the Galactic bulge, within 4 kpc from the Galactic Center. In both clusters, two distinct clumps are detected at the level of the cluster HB, separated by only ~ 0.1 magnitudes in the Ks band. They were detected with IR photometric data collected with the "VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea" (VVV) Survey, and confirmed in independent IR catalogs available in the literature, and HST optical photometry. Our analysis demonstrates that these clumps are real cluster features, not a product of field contamination or interstellar reddening. The observed split HBs could be a signature of two stellar sub-populations with different chemical composition and/or age, as recently found in Terzan 5, but it cannot be excluded that they are caused by evolutionary effects, in particular for NGC 6440. This interpretation, however, requires an anomalously high helium content (Y > 0.30). Our discovery suggests that such a peculiar HB morphology could be a common feature of massive, metal-rich bulge GGCs.

New Evidence Supporting Membership for TW Nor in Lynga 6 and the Centaurus Spiral Arm

The putative association between the 10.8 d classical Cepheid TW Nor and the open cluster Lynga 6 has generated considerable debate in the literature. New JHKs photometry in tandem with existing radial velocities for Lynga 6 stars imply cluster membership for TW Nor, and establish the variable as a high-weight calibrator for classical Cepheid relations. Fundamental mean parameters determined for Lynga 6 are: d=1.91+-0.10 kpc, E(J-H)=0.38+-0.02, and log(t)=7.9+-0.1. The Benedict et al.(2007)/Turner (2010) Galactic VIc Wesenheit function was revised using TW Nor's new parameters: W_VI,0=(-3.37+-0.08)log(P_0)-2.48+-0.08. TW Nor/Lynga 6 lie beyond the Sagittarius-Carina spiral arm and occupy the Centaurus arm, along with innumerable young Cepheids and clusters (e.g., VW Cen & VVV CL070).

New Galactic Star Clusters Discovered in the VVV Survey

VISTA Variables in the V\'ıa Láctea (VVV) is one of the six ESO Public Surveys operating on the new 4-meter Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA). VVV is scanning the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the disk, where star formation activity is high. One of the principal goals of the VVV Survey is to find new star clusters of different ages. In order to trace the early epochs of star cluster formation we concentrated our search in the directions to those of known star formation regions, masers, radio, and infrared sources. The disk area covered by VVV was visually inspected using the pipeline processed and calibrated $K_{\rm S}$-band tile images for stellar overdensities. Subsequently, we examined the composite $JHK_{\rm S}$ and $ZJK_{\rm S}$ color images of each candidate. PSF photometry of $15\times15$ arcmin fields centered on the candidates was then performed on the Cambridge Astronomy Survey Unit reduced images. After statistical field-star decontamination, color-magnitude and color-color diagrams were constructed and analyzed. We report the discovery of 96 new infrared open clusters and stellar groups. Most of the new cluster candidates are faint and compact (with small angular sizes), highly reddened, and younger than 5\,Myr. For relatively well populated cluster candidates we derived their fundamental parameters such as reddening, distance, and age by fitting the solar-metallicity Padova isochrones to the color-magnitude diagrams.
