Kinetic heating by Alfvén waves in magnetic shears

With first-principles kinetic simulations, we show that a large-scale Alfvén wave (AW) propagating in an inhomogeneous background decays into kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs), triggering ion and electron energization. We demonstrate that the two species can access unequal amounts of the initial AW energy, experiencing differential heating. During the decay process, the electric field carried by KAWs produces non-Maxwellian features in the particle VDFs, in accordance with space observations. The process we present solely requires the interaction of a large-scale AW with a magnetic shear and may be relevant for several astrophysical and laboratory plasmas.

Exact hybrid-kinetic equilibria for magnetized plasmas with shearing flows

Context. Magnetized plasmas characterized by shearing flows are present in many natural contexts, such as the Earth's magnetopause and the solar wind. The collisionless nature of involved plasmas requires a kinetic description. When the width of the shear layer is of the order of ion scales, the Hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell approach can be adopted. Aims. The aim of the paper is to derive explicit forms for stationary configurations of magnetized plasmas with planar shearing flows, within the Hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell description. Two configurations are considered: the first with a uniform magnetic field obliquely directed with respect to the bulk velocity; and the second with a uniform-magnitude variable-direction magnetic field. Methods. Stationary ion distribution functions are obtained by combining single-particle constant of motions, which are derived studying particle dynamics. Preliminary information about the form of the distribution functions are analytically derived considering a local approximation for the background electromagnetic field. Then, a numerical method is set up to obtain a solution for general profiles. Results. The explicit distribution functions that are found allow to obtain profiles of density, bulk velocity, temperature and heat flux. Anisotropy and agyrotropy in the distribution function are also evaluated. Stationarity of the solution during numerical simulations is checked in the uniform oblique magnetic field case. Conclusions. The considered configurations can be used as models for the Earth's magnetopause in simulations of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability.

Kinetic Alfvén wave generation by velocity shear in collisionless plasmas

The evolution of a linearly-polarized, long-wavelength Alfvén wave --propagating in a collisionless magnetized plasma with a sheared parallel-directed velocity flow-- is here studied by means of two-dimensional hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell (HVM) simulations. The unperturbed sheared flow has been represented by an exact solution of the HVM set of equations (Malara {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. E 97, 053212), this avoiding spurious oscillations that would arise from the non-stationary initial state and inevitably affect the dynamics of the system. We have considered the evolution of both a small and a moderate amplitude Alfvén wave, in order to separate linear wave-shear flow couplings from kinetic effects, the latter being more relevant for larger wave amplitudes. The phase-mixing generated by the shear flow modifies the initial perturbation, leading to the formation of small-scale transverse fluctuations at scales comparable with the proton inertial length. By analyzing both the polarization and group velocity of perturbations in the shear regions, we identify them as Kinetic Alfvén Waves (KAWs). In the moderate amplitude run, kinetic effects distort the proton distribution function in the shear region. This leads to the formation of a proton beam, at the Alfvén speed and parallel to the magnetic field. Such a feature, due to the parallel electric field associated with KAWs, positively compares with solar-wind observations of suprathermal ions' populations, suggesting that it may be related to the presence of ion-scales KAW-like fluctuations.

A fast algorithm for a three-dimensional synthetic model of intermittent turbulence

Synthetic turbulence models are a useful tool that provide realistic representations of turbulence, necessary to test theoretical results, to serve as background fields in some numerical simulations, and to test analysis tools. Models of 1D and 3D synthetic turbulence previously developed still required large computational resources. A new wavelet-based model of synthetic turbulence, able to produce a field with tunable spectral law, intermittency and anisotropy, is presented here. The rapid algorithm introduced, based on the classic $p$-model of intermittent turbulence, allows to reach a broad spectral range using a modest computational effort. The model has been tested against the standard diagnostics for intermittent turbulence, i.e. the spectral analysis, the scale-dependent statistics of the field increments, and the multifractal analysis, all showing an excellent response.

Enhancing Hot Carrier Collection for Solar Water Splitting with Plasmonic Titanium Nitride

The use of hot electrons generated from the decay of surface plasmons is a new paradigm to increase the conversion yield in solar energy technologies. Titanium nitride (TiN) is an emerging plasmonic ceramic that offers compatibility with CMOS technology, corrosion resistance, as well as mechanical strength and durability thus outperforming noble metals (i.e., Au, Ag) in terms of cost, mechanical, chemical and thermal stability. Here, we show that plasmonic TiN nanoparticles produce 25% higher photocurrent enhancement than Au nanoparticles decorated on TiO2 nanowires for photoelectrochemical water splitting. Our results highlight that TiN offers superior performance in hot carrier generation due to enhanced absorption efficiency, increased electron mean free path, and the ability to form an Ohmic junction with TiO2, thus enabling an extremely efficient electron collection not achievable with plasmonic Au nanoparticles. Our findings show that transition metal nitrides enable practical plasmonic devices with enhanced performance for solar energy conversion.
