Overdetermined problems and relative Cheeger sets in unbounded domains

In this paper we study a partially overdetermined mixed boundary value problem for domains ΩΩ contained in an unbounded set C\mathcal C. We introduce the notion of Cheeger set relative to C\mathcal C and show that if a domain Ω⊂CΩ\subset \mathcal C admits a solution of the overdetermined problem, then it coincides with its relative Cheeger set. We also study the related problem of characterizing constant mean curvature surfaces ΓΓ inside C\mathcal C. In the case when C\mathcal C is a cylinder we obtain further results whenever the relative boundary of ΩΩ or the surface ΓΓ is a graph on the base of the cylinder.

Existence of nonradial domains for overdetermined and isoperimetric problems in nonconvex cones

In this work we address the question of the existence of nonradial domains inside a nonconvex cone for which a mixed boundary overdetermined problem admits a solution. Our approach is variational, and consists in proving the existence of nonradial minimizers, under a volume constraint, of the associated torsional energy functional. In particular we give a condition on the domain DD on the sphere spanning the cone which ensures that the spherical sector is not a minimizer. Similar results are obtained for the relative isoperimetric problem in nonconvex cones.

On a class of fully nonlinear elliptic equation in dimension two

We study existence and asymptotic behavior of radial positive solutions of some fully nonlinear equations involving Pucci's extremal operators in dimension two. In particular we prove the existence of a positive solution of a fully nonlinear version of the Liouville equation in the plane. Moreover for the Mλ,Λ−\mathcal{M}^-_{λ,Λ} operator, we show the existence of a critical exponent and give bounds for it.

A computer-assisted existence proof for Emden's equation on an unbounded L-shaped domain

We prove existence, non-degeneracy, and exponential decay at infinity of a non-trivial solution to Emden's equation −Δu=∣u∣3-Δu = | u |^3 on an unbounded LL-shaped domain, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions. Besides the direct value of this result, we also regard this solution as a building block for solutions on expanding bounded domains with corners, to be established in future work. Our proof makes heavy use of computer assistance: Starting from a numerical approximate solution, we use a fixed-point argument to prove existence of a near-by exact solution. The eigenvalue bounds established in the course of this proof also imply non-degeneracy of the solution.

A Morse index formula for radial solutions of Lane-Emden problems

We consider the semilinear Lane-Emden problem: \begin{equation}\label{problemAbstract}\left\{\begin{array}{lr}-Δu= |u|^{p-1}u\qquad \mbox{ in }B u=0\qquad\qquad\qquad\mbox{ on }\partial B \end{array}\right.\tag{Ep\mathcal E_p} \end{equation} where BB is the unit ball of RN\mathbb R^N, N≥3N\geq3, centered at the origin and 1<p<pS1<p<p_S, pS=N+2N−2p_S=\frac{N+2}{N-2}. We prove that for any radial solution upu_p of \eqref{problemAbstract} with mm nodal domains its Morse index m(up)\mathsf{m}(u_p) is given by the formula m(up)=m+N(m−1)\mathsf{m}(u_p)=m+N(m-1) if pp is sufficiently close to pSp_S.

Asymptotic analysis for the Lane-Emden problem in dimension two

We consider the Lane-Emden Dirichlet problem \begin{equation}\tag{1} \left\{\begin{array}{lr}-Δu= |u|^{p-1}u\qquad \mbox{ in }Ωu=0\qquad\qquad\qquad\mbox{ on }\partial Ω\end{array}\right. \end{equation} when p>1p>1 and Ω⊂R2Ω\subset\mathbb R^2 is a smooth bounded domain. The aim of the paper is to survey some recent results on the asymptotic behavior of solutions of (1) as the exponent p→∞p\rightarrow \infty .

Asymptotic profile of positive solutions of Lane-Emden problems in dimension two

We consider families upu_p of solutions to the problem \begin{equation}\label{problemAbstract} \left\{\begin{array}{lr}-Δu= u^p & \mbox{ in }Ω\\ u>0 & \mbox{ in }Ω\\ u=0 & \mbox{ on }\partial Ω\end{array}\right.\tag{Ep\mathcal E_p} \end{equation} where p>1p>1 and ΩΩ is a smooth bounded domain of R2\mathbb R^2. We give a complete description of the asymptotic behavior of upu_p as p→+∞p\rightarrow +\infty, under the condition \[p\int_Ω |\nabla u_p|^2\,dx\rightarrow β\in\mathbb R\qquad\mbox{ as $p\rightarrow +\infty$}.\]

Exact Morse index computation for nodal radial solutions of Lane-Emden problems

We consider the semilinear Lane-Emden problem \begin{equation}\label{problemAbstract} \left\{\begin{array}{lr}-Δu= |u|^{p-1}u\qquad \mbox{ in }B u=0\qquad\qquad\qquad\mbox{ on }\partial B \end{array}\right.\tag{Ep\mathcal E_p} \end{equation} where BB is the unit ball of RN\mathbb R^N, N≥2N\geq2, centered at the origin and 1<p<pS1<p<p_S, with pS=+∞p_S=+\infty if N=2N=2 and pS=N+2N−2p_S=\frac{N+2}{N-2} if N≥3N\geq3. Our main result is to prove that in dimension N=2N=2 the Morse index of the least energy sign-changing radial solution upu_p of \eqref{problemAbstract} is exactly 1212 if pp is sufficiently large. As an intermediate step we compute explicitly the first eigenvalue of a limit weighted problem in RN\mathbb R^N in any dimension N≥2N\geq2.

Existence results for fully nonlinear equations in radial domains

We consider the fully nonlinear problem \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -F(x,D^2u)=|u|^{p-1}u & \text{in ΩΩ}\\ u=0 & \text{on ∂Ω\partialΩ} \end{cases} \end{equation*} where FF is uniformly elliptic, p>1p>1 and ΩΩ is either an annulus or a ball in $\Rn$, n≥2n\geq2. \\ We prove the following results: \begin{itemize} \item[i)] existence of a positive/negative radial solution for every exponent p>1p>1, if ΩΩ is an annulus; \item[ii)] existence of infinitely many sign changing radial solutions for every p>1p>1, characterized by the number of nodal regions, if ΩΩ is an annulus; \item[iii)] existence of infinitely many sign changing radial solutions characterized by the number of nodal regions, if FF is one of the Pucci's operator, ΩΩ is a ball and pp is subcritical.

A nonexistence result for sign-changing solutions of the Brezis-Nirenberg problem in low dimensions

We consider the Brezis-Nirenberg problem: \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δu = λu + |u|^{2^* -2}u & \hbox{in}\ Ω\\ u=0 & \hbox{on}\ \partial Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where ΩΩ is a smooth bounded domain in RN\mathbb{R}^N, N≥3N\geq 3, 2∗=2NN−22^{*}=\frac{2N}{N-2} is the critical Sobolev exponent and λ>0λ>0 a positive parameter. The main result of the paper shows that if N=4,5,6N=4,5,6 and λλ is close to zero there are no sign-changing solutions of the form uλ=PUδ1,ξ−PUδ2,ξ+wλ,u_λ=PU_{δ_1,ξ}-PU_{δ_2,ξ}+w_λ, where PUδiPU_{δ_i} is the projection on H01(Ω)H_0^1(Ω) of the regular positive solution of the critical problem in RN\mathbb{R}^N, centered at a point ξ∈Ωξ\in Ω and wλw_λ is a remainder term. Some additional results on norm estimates of wλw_λ and about the concentrations speeds of tower of bubbles in higher dimensions are also presented.

Morse index of radial nodal solutions of Hénon type equations in dimension two

We consider non-autonomous semilinear elliptic equations of the type −Δu=∣x∣αf(u),  x∈Ω,  u=0on  ∂Ω, -Δu = |x|^α f(u), \ \ x \in Ω, \ \ u=0 \quad \text{on} \ \ \partial Ω, where Ω⊂R2Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^2 is either a ball or an annulus centered at the origin, α>0α>0 and f:R →Rf: {\mathbb R}\ \rightarrow {\mathbb R} is C1,βC^{1, β} on bounded sets of R{\mathbb R}. We address the question of estimating the Morse index m(u)m(u) of a sign changing radial solution uu. We prove that m(u)≥3m(u) \geq 3 for every α>0α>0 and that m(u)≥α+3m(u)\geq α+ 3 if αα is even. If ff is superlinear the previous estimates become m(u)≥n(u)+2m(u) \geq n(u)+2 and m(u)≥α+n(u)+2m(u) \geq α+ n(u)+2, respectively, where n(u)n(u) denotes the number of nodal sets of uu, i.e. of connected components of {x∈Ω;u(x)≠0}\{ x\in Ω; u(x) \neq 0\}. Consequently, every least energy nodal solution uαu_α is not radially symmetric and m(uα)→+∞m(u_α) \rightarrow + \infty as α→+∞α\rightarrow + \infty along the sequence of even exponents αα.

Symmetry and spectral properties for viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear equations

We study symmetry properties of viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations. We show that if uu is a viscosity solution of a rotationally invariant equation of the form F(x,D2u)+f(x,u)=0F(x,D^2u)+f(x,u)=0, then the operator Lu=M++∂f∂u(x,u)\mathcal{L}_u=\mathcal{M}^++\frac{\partial f}{\partial u}(x,u), where M+\mathcal{M}^+ is the Pucci's sup--operator, plays the role of the linearized operator at uu. In particular, we prove that if uu is a solution in a radial bounded domain, if ff is convex in uu and if the principal eigenvalue of Lu\mathcal{L}_u (associated with positive eigenfunctions) in any half domain is nonnegative, then uu is foliated Schwarz symmetric. We apply our symmetry results to obtain bounds on the spectrum and to deduce properties of possible nodal eigenfunctions for the operator M+\mathcal{M}^+.

Asymptotic analysis and sign changing bubble towers for Lane-Emden problems

We consider the semilinear Lane-Emden problem in a smooth bounded domain of the plane. The aim of the paper is to analyze the asymptotic behavior of sign changing solutions as the exponent p of the nonlinearity goes to infinity. Among other results we show, under some symmetry assumptions on the domain, that the positive and negative parts of a family of symmetric solutions concentrate at the same point, as p goes to infinity, and the limit profile looks like a tower of two bubbles given by a superposition of a regular and a singular solution of the Liouville problem in the plane.

Hénon type equations and concentration on spheres

In this paper we study the concentration profile of various kind of symmetric solutions of some semilinear elliptic problems arising in astrophysics and in diffusion phenomena. Using a reduction method we prove that doubly symmetric positive solutions in a 2m2m-dimensional ball must concentrate and blow up on (m−1)(m-1)-spheres as the concentration parameter tends to infinity. We also consider axially symmetric positive solutions in a ball in RN\mathbb{R}^N, N≥3N \geq 3, and show that concentration and blow up occur on two antipodal points, as the concentration parameter tends to infinity.

Morse index and sign changing bubble towers for Lane-Emden problems

We consider the semilinear Lane-Emden problem \begin{equation}\label{problemAbstract}\left\{ \begin{array}{lr} -Δu= |u|^{p-1}u\qquad \mbox{ in }Ω\\ u=0\qquad\qquad\qquad\mbox{ on }\partial Ω\end{array} \right.\tag{Ep\mathcal E_p} \end{equation} where p>1p>1 and ΩΩ is a smooth bounded symmetric domain of R2\mathbb R^2. We show that for families (up)(u_p) of sign-changing symmetric solutions of \eqref{problemAbstract} an upper bound on their Morse index implies concentration of the positive and negative part, up±u_p^\pm, at the same point, as p→+∞p\to+\infty. Then an asymptotic analysis of up+u_p^+ and up−u_p^- shows that the asymptotic profile of (up)(u_p), as p→+∞p\to+\infty, is that of a tower of two different bubbles.

Sign-changing stationary solutions and blowup for the nonlinear heat equation in dimension two

Consider the nonlinear heat equation v_t-Δv=|v|^{p-1}v in the unit ball of R^2, with Dirichlet boundary condition. Let u_{p,K} be a radially symmetric, sign-changing stationary solution having a fixed number K of nodal regions. We prove that the solution of the equation with initial value λu_{p,K} blows up in finite time if |λ-1|>0 is sufficiently small and if p is sufficiently large. The proof is based on the analysis of the asymptotic behavior of up,Ku_{p,K} and of the linearized operator L= -Δ- p |u_{p,K}|^{p-1}. To show this we consider the linearized operator L= -Δ- p|u_p|^{p-1} and study the behavior of its first eigenvalue and of its first normalized eigenfunction for large p.

Blow up of solutions of semilinear heat equations in general domains

Consider the nonlinear heat equation vt−Δv=∣v∣p−1vv_t -Δv= |v|^{p-1} v in a bounded smooth domain Ω⊂RnΩ\subset \R^n with n>2n>2 and Dirichlet boundary condition. Given upu_{p} a sign-changing stationary solution fulfilling suitable assumptions, we prove that the solution with initial value θupθu_{p} blows up in finite time if ∣θ−1∣>0 |θ-1|>0 is sufficiently small and if pp is sufficiently close to the critical exponent. Since for θ=1θ=1 the solution is global, this shows that, in general, the set of the initial data for which the solution is global is not star-shaped. This phenomenon had been previously observed in the case when the domain is a ball and the stationary solution is radially symmetric.

Bubble concentration on spheres for supercritical elliptic problems

We consider the supercritical Lane-Emden problem $$(P_\eps)\qquad -Δv= |v|^{p_\eps-1} v \ \hbox{in}\ \mathcal{A} ,\quad u=0\ \hbox{on}\ \partial\mathcal{A} $$ where A\mathcal A is an annulus in $\rr^{2m},$ m≥2m\ge2 and $p_\eps={(m+1)+2\over(m+1)-2}-\eps$, $\eps>0.$ We prove the existence of positive and sign changing solutions of $(P_\eps)$ concentrating and blowing-up, as $\eps\to0$, on (m−1)−(m-1)-dimensional spheres. Using a reduction method (see Ruf-Srikanth (2010) J. Eur. Math. Soc. and Pacella-Srikanth (2012) arXiv:1210.0782)we transform problem $(P_\eps)$ into a nonhomogeneous problem in an annulus $\mathcal D\subset \rr^{m+1}$ which can be solved by a Ljapunov-Schmidt finite dimensional reduction.

Lane Emden problems with large exponents and singular Liouville equations

We consider the Lane-Emden Dirichlet problem -Δu = \abs{u}^{p-1}u, in B, u =0, on \partial B, where p>1p>1 and BB denotes the unit ball in $\IR^2$. We study the asymptotic behavior of the least energy nodal radial solution upu_p, as p→+∞p\rightarrow +\infty. Assuming w.l.o.g. that up(0)<0u_p(0) < 0, we prove that a suitable rescaling of the negative part up−u_p^- converges to the unique regular solution of the Liouville equation in $\IR^2$, while a suitable rescaling of the positive part up+u_p^+ converges to a (singular) solution of a singular Liouville equation in $\IR^2$. We also get exact asymptotic values for the L∞L^\infty-norms of up−u_p^- and up+u_p^+, as well as an asymptotic estimate of the energy. Finally, we have that the nodal line $\N_p:={x\in B : \abs{x}= r_p}$ shrinks to a point and we compute the rate of convergence of rpr_p.

On the pure critical exponent problem for the pp-Laplacian

In this paper we prove existence and multiplicity of positive and sign-changing solutions to the pure critical exponent problem for the pp-Laplacian operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a bounded domain having nontrivial topology and discrete symmetry. Pioneering works related to the case p=2p=2 are H. Brezis and L. Nirenberg [4], J.-M. Coron [10], and A. Bahri and J.-M. Coron [3]. A global compactness analysis is given for the Palais-Smale sequences in the presence of symmetries.

Sign changing solutions of Lane Emden problems with interior nodal line and semilinear heat equations

We consider the semilinear Lane Emden problem in a smooth bounded simply connected domain in the plane, invariant by the action of a finite symmetry group G. We show that if the orbit of each point in the domain, under the action of the group G, has cardinality greater than or equal to four then, for p sufficiently large, there exists a sign changing solution of the problem with two nodal regions whose nodal line does not touch the boundary of the domain. This result is proved as a consequence of an analogous result for the associated parabolic problem.

Symmetry results for cooperative elliptic systems in unbounded domains

In this paper we prove symmetry results for classical solutions of semilinear cooperative elliptic systems in R^N, or in the exterior of a ball. We consider the case of fully coupled systems and nonlinearities which are either convex or have a convex derivative. The solutions are shown to be foliated Schwarz symmetric if a bound on their Morse index holds. As a consequence of the symmetry results we also obtain some nonexistence theorems.

A Computer-Assisted Uniqueness Proof for a Semilinear Elliptic Boundary Value Problem

A wide variety of articles, starting with the famous paper (Gidas, Ni and Nirenberg in Commun. Math. Phys. 68, 209-243 (1979)) is devoted to the uniqueness question for the semilinear elliptic boundary value problem -Δu=λu+u^p in Ω, u>0 in Ω, u=0 on the boundary of Ω, where λ ranges between 0 and the first Dirichlet Laplacian eigenvalue. So far, this question was settled in the case of Ω being a ball and, for more general domains, in the case λ=0. In (McKenna et al. in J. Differ. Equ. 247, 2140-2162 (2009)), we proposed a computer-assisted approach to this uniqueness question, which indeed provided a proof in the case Ω=(0,1)x(0,1), and p=2. Due to the high numerical complexity, we were not able in (McKenna et al. in J. Differ. Equ. 247, 2140-2162 (2009)) to treat higher values of p. Here, by a significant reduction of the complexity, we will prove uniqueness for the case p=3.

A Reduction Method for Semilinear Elliptic Equations and Solutions Concentrating on Spheres

We show that any general semilinear elliptic problem with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions in an annulus A in R^2m ;m >1, invariant by the action of a certain symmetry group can be reduced to a nonhomogenous similar problem in an annulus D in R^(m+1), invariant by another related symmetry. We apply this result to prove the existence of positive and sign changing solutions of a singularly perturbed elliptic problem in A which concentrate on one or two (m-1) dimensional spheres. We also prove that the Morse indices of these solutions tend to infinity as the parameter of concentration tends to infinity.

Alternating sign multibump solutions of nonlinear elliptic equations in expanding tubular domains

Let ΓΓ denote a smooth simple curve in RN\mathbb{R}^{N}, N≥2N\geq2, possibly with boundary. Let ΩRΩ_{R} be the open normal tubular neighborhood of radius 1 of the expanded curve RΓ:={Rx∣x∈Γ∖∂Γ}RΓ:=\{Rx\mid x\in Γ\smallsetminus\partialΓ\}. Consider the superlinear problem −Δu+λu=f(u)-Δu+λu=f(u) on the domains ΩRΩ_{R}, as R→∞R\rightarrow \infty, with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. We prove the existence of multibump solutions with bumps lined up along RΓRΓ with alternating signs. The function ff is superlinear at 0 and at ∞\infty, but it is not assumed to be odd. If the boundary of the curve is nonempty our results give examples of contractible domains in which the problem has multiple sign changing solutions.

Solutions of semilinear elliptic equations in tubes

Given a smooth compact k-dimensional manifold Λembedded in Rm\mathbb {R}^m, with m\geq 2 and 1\leq k\leq m-1, and given ε>0, we define B_ε(Λ) to be the geodesic tubular neighborhood of radius εabout Λ. In this paper, we construct positive solutions of the semilinear elliptic equation Δu + u^p = 0 in B_ε(Λ) with u = 0 on \partial B_ε(Λ), when the parameter εis chosen small enough. In this equation, the exponent p satisfies either p > 1 when n:=m-k \leq 2 or p\in (1, \frac{n+2}{n-2}) when n>2. In particular p can be critical or supercritical in dimension m\geq 3. As εtends to zero, the solutions we construct have Morse index tending to infinity. Moreover, using a Pohozaev type argument, we prove that our result is sharp in the sense that there are no positive solutions for p>\frac{n+2}{n-2}, n\geq 3, if εis sufficiently small.
