Garside elements, inertia and Galois action on braid groups

An important piece of information in the theory of the arithmetic Galois action on the geometric fundamental groups of schemes is that divisorial inertia is acted on cyclotomically. We detail in this note the content of this fact in the case of the profinite braid groups arising from complex reflection groups, naturally viewing them as the geometric fundamental groups of the attending classifying spaces. We also include the case of the full (non colored) braid groups, whose completed classifying spaces are Deligne-Mumford stacks rather than schemes.

The integer cohomology algebra of toric arrangements

We compute the cohomology ring of the complement of a toric arrangement with integer coefficients and investigate its dependency from the arrangement's combinatorial data. To this end, we study a morphism of spectral sequences associated to certain combinatorially defined subcomplexes of the toric Salvetti category in the complexified case, and use a technical argument in order to extend the results to full generality. As a byproduct we obtain: -a "combinatorial" version of Brieskorn's lemma in terms of Salvetti complexes of complexified arrangements, -a uniqueness result for realizations of arithmetic matroids with at least one basis of multiplicity 1.

On models of the braid arrangement and their hidden symmetries

The De Concini-Procesi wonderful models of the braid arrangement of type $A_{n-1}$ are equipped with a natural $S_n$ action, but only the minimal model admits an `hidden' symmetry, i.e. an action of $S_{n+1}$ that comes from its moduli space interpretation. In this paper we explain why the non minimal models don't admit this extended action: they are `too small'. In particular we construct a {\em supermaximal} model which is the smallest model that can be projected onto the maximal model and again admits an extended $S_{n+1}$ action. We give an explicit description of a basis for the integer cohomology of this supermaximal model. Furthermore, we deal with another hidden extended action of the symmetric group: we observe that the symmetric group $S_{n+k}$ acts by permutation on the set of $k$-codimensionl strata of the minimal model. Even if this happens at a purely combinatorial level, it gives rise to an interesting permutation action on the elements of a basis of the integer cohomology.

Salvetti complex, spectral sequences and cohomology of Artin groups

The aim of this short survey is to give a quick introduction to the Salvetti complex as a tool for the study of the cohomology of Artin groups. In particular we show how a spectral sequence induced by a filtration on the complex provides a very natural and useful method to study recursively the cohomology of Artin groups, simplifying many computations. In the last section some examples of applications are presented.

Cohomology of braids, principal congruence subgroups and geometric representations

The main purpose of this article is to give the integral cohomology of classical principal congruence subgroups in SL(2,Z) as well as their analogues in the third braid group with local coefficients in symmetric powers of the natural symplectic representation. The resulting answers (1) correspond to certain modular forms in characteristic zero, and (2) the cohomology of certain spaces in homotopy theory in characteristic p. The torsion is given in terms of the structure of a "p-divided power algebra". The work is an extension of the work in arXiv:1204.5390v1 as well as extensions of a classical computation of Shimura to integral coefficients. The results here contrast the local coefficients such as that in [Looijenga, J. Alg. Geom., 5, '96] and [Tillmann, Q. J. Math., 61, '10].

The cohomology of the braid group B_3 and of SL_2(Z) with coefficients in a geometric representation

The purpose of this article is to describe the integral cohomology of the braid group B_3 and SL_2(Z) with local coefficients in a classical geometric representation given by symmetric powers of the natural symplectic representation. These groups have a description in terms of the so called "divided polynomial algebra". The results show a strong relation between torsion part of the computed cohomology and fibrations related to loop spaces of spheres.

Homology computations for complex braid groups

Complex braid groups are the natural generalizations of braid groups associated to arbitrary (finite) complex reflection groups. We investigate several methods for computing the homology of these groups. In particular, we get the Poincaré polynomial with coefficients in a finite field for one large series of such groups, and compute the second integral cohomology group for all of them. As a consequence we get non-isomorphism results for these groups.

The K(π, 1) problem for the affine Artin group of type \widetilde{B}_n and its cohomology

In this paper we prove that the complement to the affine complex arrangement of type \widetilde{B}_n is a K(π, 1) space. We also compute the cohomology of the affine Artin group G of type \widetilde{B}_n with coefficients over several interesting local systems. In particular, we consider the module Q[q^{\pm 1}, t^{\pm 1}], where the first n-standard generators of G act by (-q)-multiplication while the last generator acts by (-t)-multiplication. Such representation generalizes the analog 1-parameter representation related to the bundle structure over the complement to the discriminant hypersurface, endowed with the monodromy action of the associated Milnor fibre. The cohomology of G with trivial coefficients is derived from the previous one.
