Counting elliptic curves with prescribed level structures over number fields

Harron and Snowden counted the number of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ up to height $X$ with torsion group $G$ for each possible torsion group $G$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. In this paper we generalize their result to all number fields and all level structures $G$ such that the corresponding modular curve $X_G$ is a weighted projective line $\mathbb{P}(w_0,w_1)$ and the morphism $X_G\to X(1)$ satisfies a certain condition. In particular, this includes all modular curves $X_1(m,n)$ with coarse moduli space of genus $0$. We prove our results by defining a size function on $\mathbb{P}(w_0,w_1)$ following unpublished work of Deng, and working out how to count the number of points on $\mathbb{P}(w_0,w_1)$ up to size $X$.

Hyperelliptic modular curves $X_0(n)$ and isogenies of elliptic curves over quadratic fields

Let $n$ be an integer such that the modular curve $X_0(n)$ is hyperelliptic of genus $\ge2$ and such that the Jacobian of $X_0(n)$ has rank $0$ over $\mathbb Q$. We determine all points of $X_0(n)$ defined over quadratic fields, and we give a moduli interpretation of these points. As a consequence, we show that up to $\overline{\mathbb Q}$-isomorphism, all but finitely many elliptic curves with $n$-isogenies over quadratic fields are in fact $\mathbb Q$-curves, and we list all exceptions. We also show that, again with finitely many exceptions up to $\overline{\mathbb Q}$-isomorphism, every $\mathbb Q$-curve $E$ over a quadratic field $K$ admitting an $n$-isogeny is $d$-isogenous, for some $d\mid n$, to the twist of its Galois conjugate by some quadratic extension $L$ of $K$; we determine $d$ and $L$ explicitly.

Splitting of primes in number fields generated by points on some modular curves

We study the splitting of primes in number fields generated by points on modular curves. Momose was the first to notice that quadratic points on $X_1(n)$ generate quadratic fields over which certain primes split in a particular way and his results were later expanded upon by Krumm. We prove results about the splitting behaviour of primes in quadratic fields generated by points on the modular curves $X_0(n)$ which are hyperelliptic (except for $n=37$) and in cubic fields generated by points on $X_1(2, 14)$.

Growth of torsion groups of elliptic curves upon base change

We study how the torsion of elliptic curves over number fields grows upon base change, and in particular prove various necessary conditions for torsion growth. For a number field $F$, we show that for a large set of number fields $L$, whose Galois group of their normal closure over $F$ has certain properties, it will hold that $E(L)_{tors}=E(F)_{tors}$ for all elliptic curves $E$ defined over $F$. Our methods turn out to be particularly useful in studying the possible torsion groups $E(K)_{tors}$, where $K$ is a number field and $E$ is a base change of an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb Q$. Suppose that $E$ is a base change of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb Q$ for the remainder of the abstract. We prove that $E(K)_{tors}=E(\mathbb Q)_{tors}$ for all elliptic curves $E$ defined over $\mathbb Q$ and all number fields $K$ of degree $d$, where $d$ is not divisible by a prime $\leq 7$. Using this fact, we determine all the possible torsion groups $E(K)_{tors}$ over number fields $K$ of prime degree $p\geq 7$. We determine all the possible degrees of $[\mathbb Q(P):\mathbb Q]$, where $P$ is a point of prime order $p$ for all $p$ such that $p\not\equiv 8 \pmod 9$ or $\left( \frac{-D}{p}\right)=1$ for any $D\in \{1,2,7,11,19,43,67,163\}$; this is true for a set of density $\frac{1535}{1536}$ of all primes and in particular for all $p<3167$. Using this result, we determine all the possible prime orders of a point $P\in E(K)_{tors}$, where $[K:\mathbb Q]=d$, for all $d\leq 3342296$. Finally, we determine all the possible groups $E(K)_{tors}$, where $K$ is a quartic number field and $E$ is an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb Q$ and show that no quartic sporadic point on a modular curves $X_1(m,n)$ comes from an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb Q$.

Tamagawa Numbers of elliptic curves with $C_{13}$ torsion over quadratic fields

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over a number field $K$, $c_v$ the Tamagawa number of $E$ at $v$, and let $c_E=\prod_{v}c_v$. Lorenzini proved that $v_{13}(c_E)$ is postive for all elliptic curves over quadratic fields with a point of order $13$. Krumm conjectured, based on extensive computation, that the $13$-adic valuation of $c_E$ is even for all such elliptic curves. In this note we prove this conjecture and furhtermore prove that there is an unique such curve satisfying $v_{13}(c_E)=2$.

A criterion to rule out torsion groups for elliptic curves over number fields

We present a criterion for proving that certain groups of the form $\mathbb Z/m\mathbb Z\oplus\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z$ do not occur as the torsion subgroup of any elliptic curve over suitable (families of) number fields. We apply this criterion to eliminate certain groups as torsion groups of elliptic curves over cubic and quartic fields. We also use this criterion to give the list of all torsion groups of elliptic curves occurring over a specific cubic field and over a specific quartic field.

Isogenies of non-CM elliptic curves with rational $j$-invariants over number fields

We unconditionally determine $I_\Q(d)$, the set of possible prime degrees of cyclic $K$-isogneies of elliptic curves with $\Q$-rational $j$-invariants and without complex multiplication over number fields $K$ of degree $\leq d$, for $d\leq 7$, and give an upper bound for $I_\Q(d)$ for $d>7$. Assuming Serre's uniformity conjecture, we determine $I_\Q(d)$ exactly for all positive integers $d$.

Exceptional elliptic curves over quartic fields

We study the number of elliptic curves, up to isomorphism, over a fixed quartic field $K$ having a prescribed torsion group $T$ as a subgroup. Let $T=\Z/m\Z \oplus \Z/n\Z$, where $m|n$, be a torsion group such that the modular curve $X_1(m,n)$ is an elliptic curve. Let $K$ be a number field such that there is a positive and finite number of elliptic curves $E_T$ over $K$ having $T$ as a subgroup. We call such pairs $(E_T, K)$ \emph{exceptional}. It is known that there are only finitely many exceptional pairs when $K$ varies through all quadratic or cubic fields. We prove that when $K$ varies through all quartic fields, there exist infinitely many exceptional pairs when $T=\Z/14\Z$ or $\Z/15\Z$ and finitely many otherwise.

The growth of the rank of Abelian varieties upon extensions

We study the growth of the rank of elliptic curves and, more generally, Abelian varieties upon extensions of number fields. First, we show that if $L/K$ is a finite Galois extension of number fields such that $\Gal(L/K)$ does not have an index 2 subgroup and $A/K$ is an Abelian variety, then $\rk A(L)-\rk A(K)$ can never be 1. We obtain more precise results when $\Gal(L/K)$ is of odd order, alternating, $\SL_2(\F_p)$ or $\PSL_2(\F_p)$. This implies a restriction on $\rk E(K(E[p]))-\rk E(K(ζ_p))$ when $E/K$ is an elliptic curve whose mod $p$ Galois representation is surjective. Similar results are obtained for the growth of the rank in certain non-Galois extensions. Second, we show that for every $n\ge2$ there exists an elliptic curve $E$ over a number field $K$ such that $\Q\otimes_\Q\Res_{K/\Q} E$ contains a number field of degree $2^n$. We ask whether every elliptic curve $E/K$ has infinite rank over $K\Q(2)$, where $\Q(2)$ is the compositum of all quadratic extensions of $\Q$. We show that if the answer is yes, then for any $n\ge2$, there exists an elliptic curve $E/K$ admitting infinitely many quadratic twists whose rank is a positive multiple of $2^n$.

Ranks of elliptic curves with prescribed torsion over number fields

We study the structure of the Mordell--Weil group of elliptic curves over number fields of degree 2, 3, and 4. We show that if $T$ is a group, then either the class of all elliptic curves over quadratic fields with torsion subgroup $T$ is empty, or it contains curves of rank~0 as well as curves of positive rank. We prove a similar but slightly weaker result for cubic and quartic fields. On the other hand, we find a group $T$ and a quartic field $K$ such that among the elliptic curves over $K$ with torsion subgroup $T$, there are curves of positive rank, but none of rank~0. We find examples of elliptic curves with positive rank and given torsion in many previously unknown cases. We also prove that all elliptic curves over quadratic fields with a point of order 13 or 18 and all elliptic curves over quartic fields with a point of order 22 are isogenous to one of their Galois conjugates and, by a phenomenon that we call \emph{false complex multiplication}, have even rank. Finally, we discuss connections with elliptic curves over finite fields and applications to integer factorization.

Torsion of elliptic curves over cubic fields

Although it is not known which groups can appear as torsion groups of elliptic curves over cubic number fields, it is known which groups can appear for infinitely many non-isomorphic curves. We denote the set of these groups as $S$. In this paper we deal with three problems concerning the torsion of elliptic curves over cubic fields. First, we study the possible torsion groups of elliptic curves that appear over the field with smallest absolute value of its discriminant and having Galois group $S_3$ and over the field with smallest absolute value of its discriminant and having Galois group $\Z/3\Z$. Secondly, for all except two groups $G\in S$, we find the field $K$ with smallest absolute value of its discriminant such that there exists an elliptic curve over $K$ having $G$ as torsion. Finally, for every $G\in S$ and every cubic field $K$ we determine whether there exists infinitely many non-isomorphic elliptic curves with torsion $G$.

Complete classification of torsion of elliptic curves over quadratic cyclotomic fields

In a previous paper, the author examined the possible torsions of an elliptic curve over the quadratic fields $\mathbb Q(i)$ and $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{-3})$. Although all the possible torsions were found if the elliptic curve has rational coefficients, we were unable to eliminate some possibilities for the torsion if the elliptic curve has coefficients that are not rational. In this note, by finding all the points of two hyperelliptic curves over $\mathbb Q(i)$ and $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{-3})$, we solve this problem completely and thus obtain a classification of all possible torsions of elliptic curves over $\mathbb Q(i)$ and $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{-3})$.
