Closed and transitive transformation groups of a surface

The purpose of this paper is to survey the structure of closed and transitive transformation groups acting on a closed surface. In particular, we prove a number of relations between groups acting on the sphere that contain the rotation group, together with a diagram of how these groups are connected. In addition, we describe transformation groups acting on the torus and higher genus surfaces.

Homogeneous Transformation Groups of the Sphere

In this paper, we study the structure of homogeneous subgroups of the homeomorphism group of the sphere, which are defined as closed groups of homeomorphisms of the sphere that contain the rotation group. We prove two structure theorems about the behaviour and properties of such groups and present a diagram of the structure of these groups partly on the basis of these results. In addition, we prove a number of explicit relations between the groups in the diagram.

A Classification of Minimal Sets of Torus Homeomorphisms

We provide a classification of minimal sets of homeomorphisms of the two-torus, in terms of the structure of their complement. We show that this structure is exactly one of the following types: (1) a disjoint union of topological disks, or (2) a disjoint union of essential annuli and topological disks, or (3) a disjoint union of one doubly essential component and bounded topological disks. Periodic bounded disks can only occur in type 3. This result provides a framework for more detailed investigations, and additional information on the torus homeomorphism allows to draw further conclusions. In the non-wandering case, the classification can be significantly strengthened and we obtain that a minimal set other than the whole torus is either a periodic orbit, or the orbit of a periodic circloid, or the extension of a Cantor set. Further special cases are given by torus homeomorphisms homotopic to an Anosov, in which types 1 and 2 cannot occur, and the same holds for homeomorphisms homotopic to the identity with a rotation set which has non-empty interior. If a non-wandering torus homeomorphism has a unique and totally irrational rotation vector, then any minimal set other than the whole torus has to be the extension of a Cantor set.

Focal rigidity of hyperbolic surfaces

In this note, we consider the rigidity of the focal decomposition of closed hyperbolic surfaces. We show that, generically, the focal decomposition of a closed hyperbolic surface does not allow for non-trivial topological deformations, without changing the hyperbolic structure of the surface. By classical rigidity theory this is also true in dimension $n \geq 3$. Our current result extends a previous result that flat tori in dimension $n \geq 2$ that are focally equivalent are isometric modulo rescaling.

Minimal sets of non-resonant torus homeomorphisms

As was known to H. Poincare, an orientation preserving circle homeomorphism without periodic points is either minimal or has no dense orbits, and every orbit accumulates on the unique minimal set. In the first case the minimal set is the circle, in the latter case a Cantor set. In this paper we study a two-dimensional analogue of this classical result: we classify the minimal sets of non-resonant torus homeomorphisms; that is, torus homeomorphisms isotopic to the identity for which the rotation set is a point with rationally independent irrational coordinates.

Quasiconformal Homogeneity of Genus Zero Surfaces

A Riemann surface $M$ is said to be $K$-quasiconformally homogeneous if for every two points $p,q \in M$, there exists a $K$-quasiconformal homeomorphism $f \colon M \rightarrow M$ such that $f(p) = q$. In this paper, we show there exists a universal constant $K_0 > 1$ such that if $M$ is a $K$-quasiconformally homogeneous hyperbolic genus zero surface other than the disk $\mathbb{D}$, then $K \geq K_0$. This answers a question by Gehring and Palka.

Focal Rigidity of Flat Tori

Given a closed Riemannian manifold (M, g), there is a partition Σ_i of its tangent bundle TM called the focal decomposition. The sets Σ_i are closely associated to focusing of geodesics of (M, g), i.e. to the situation where there are exactly i geodesic arcs of the same length joining points p and q in M. In this note, we study the topological structure of the focal decomposition of a closed Riemannian manifold and its relation with the metric structure of the manifold. Our main result is that the flat n-tori are focally rigid, in the sense that if two flat tori are focally equivalent, then the tori are isometric up to rescaling.

Topological Entropy and Diffeomorphisms of Surfaces with Wandering Domains

Let $M$ be a closed surface and $f$ a diffeomorphism of $M$. A diffeomorphism is said to permute a dense collection of domains, if the union of the domains are dense and the iterates of any one domain are mutually disjoint. In this note, we show that if $f \in \diff^{1+α}(M)$, with $α>0$, and permutes a dense collection of domains with bounded geometry, then $f$ has zero topological entropy.
