Linear and nonlinear waves in quantum plasmas with arbitrary degeneracy of electrons

The purpose of this review is to revisit recent results in the literature where quantum plasmas with arbitrary degeneracy degree are considered. This is different from a frequent approach, where completely degeneracy is assumed in dense plasmas. The general reasoning in the reviewed works is to take a numerical coefficient in from of the Bohm potential term in quantum fluids, in order to fit the linear waves from quantum kinetic theory in the long wavelength limit. Moreover, the equation of state for the ideal Fermi gas is assumed, for arbitrary degeneracy degree. The quantum fluid equations allow the expedite derivation of weakly nonlinear equations from reductive perturbation theory. In this way, quantum Korteweg - de Vries and quantum Zakharov - Kuznetsov equations are derived, together with the conditions for bright and dark soliton propagation. Quantum ion-acoustic waves in unmagnetized and magnetized plasmas, together with magnetosonic waves, have been obtained for arbitrary degeneracy degree. The conditions for the application of the models, and the physical situations where the mixed dense - dilute systems exist, have been identified.

Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal approach for the quantum Vlasov equation

The one-dimensional stationary quantum Vlasov equation is analyzed using the energy as one of the dynamical variables, similarly as in the solution of the Vlasov-Poisson system by means of the Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal method. In the semiclassical case where quantum tunneling effects are small, an infinite series solution is developed and shown to be immediately integrable up to a recursive chain of quadratures in position space only. { As it stands, the treatment of the self-consistent, Wigner-Poisson system is beyond the scope of the method, which assumes} a given smooth { time-independent} external potential. Accuracy tests for the series expansion are also provided. Examples of anharmonic potentials are worked out up to a high order on the quantum diffraction parameter.

High-harmonic generation in a quantum electron gas trapped in a nonparabolic and anisotropic well

An effective self-consistent model is derived and used to study the dynamics of an electron gas confined in a nonparabolic and anisotropic quantum well. This approach is based on the equations of quantum hydrodynamics, which incorporate quantum and nonlinear effects in an approximate fashion. The effective model consists of a set of six coupled differential equations (dynamical system) for the electric dipole and the size of the electron gas. Using this model we show that: (i) High harmonic generation is related to the appearance of chaos in the phase space, as attested by related Poincaré sections; (ii) Higher order harmonics can be excited efficiently and with relatively weak driving fields by making use of chirped electromagnetic waves.

Ion-acoustic cnoidal waves in a quantum plasma

Nonlinear ion-acoustic cnoidal wave structures are studied in an unmagnetized quantum plasma. Using the reductive perturbation method, a Korteweg-de Vries equation is derived for appropriate boundary conditions and nonlinear periodic wave solutions are obtained. The corresponding analytical solution and numerical plots of the ion-acoustic cnoidal waves and solitons in the phase plane are presented using the Sagdeev pseudo-potential approach. The variations in the nonlinear potential of the ion-acoustic cnoidal waves are studied at different values of quantum parameter $H_{e}$ which is the ratio of electron plasmon energy to electron Fermi energy defined for degenerate electrons. It is found that both compressive and rarefactive ion-acoustic cnoidal wave structures are formed depending on the value of the quantum parameter. The dependence of the wavelength and frequency on nonlinear wave amplitude is also presented.

Linear and nonlinear ion-acoustic waves in non-relativistic quantum plasmas with arbitrary degeneracy

Linear and nonlinear ion-acoustic waves are studied in a fluid model for non-relativistic, unmagnetized quantum plasma with electrons with an arbitrary degeneracy degree. The equation of state for electrons follows from a local Fermi-Dirac distribution function and apply equally well both to fully degenerate or classical, non-degenerate limits. Ions are assumed to be cold. Quantum diffraction effects through the Bohm potential are also taken into account. A general coupling parameter valid for dilute and dense plasmas is proposed. The linear dispersion relation of the ion-acoustic waves is obtained and the ion-acoustic speed is discussed for the limiting cases of extremely dense or dilute systems. In the long wavelength limit the results agree with quantum kinetic theory. Using the reductive perturbation method, the appropriate Korteweg-de Vries equation for weakly nonlinear solutions is obtained and the corresponding soliton propagation is analyzed. It is found that soliton hump and dip structures are formed depending on the value of the quantum parameter for the degenerate electrons, which affect the phase velocities in the dispersive medium.

Systematic Derivation of Noether Point Symmetries in Special Relativistic Field Theories

A didactic and systematic derivation of Noether point symmetries and conserved currents is put forward in special relativistic field theories, without a priori assumptions about the transformation laws. Given the Lagrangian density, the invariance condition develops as a set of partial differential equations determining the symmetry transformation. The solution is provided in the case of real scalar, complex scalar, free electromagnetic, and charged electromagnetic fields. Besides the usual conservation laws, a less popular symmetry is analyzed: the symmetry associated with the linear superposition of solutions, whenever applicable. The role of gauge invariance is emphasized. The case of the charged scalar particle under external electromagnetic fields is considered, and the accompanying Noether point symmetries determined.

Influence of flavor oscillations on neutrino beam instabilities

We consider the collective neutrino plasma interactions, and study the electron plasma instabilities produced by a nearly mono-energetic neutrino beam in a plasma. We describe the mutual influence of neutrino flavor oscillations and electron plasma waves. We show that the neutrino flavor oscillations are not only perturbed by electron plasmas waves, but also contribute to the dispersion relation and the growth rates of neutrino beam instabilities.

Fully Non-Dimensional Nusselt Number Correlation for Transient Natural Convection in Tanks

A fully non-dimensional correlation for the Nusselt number associated to cooling processes in vertical storage tanks under laminar natural convection is presented. The derived correlation depends on the average temperature and can be used for the improvement of temperature profiles found from global methods. A Finite Volume method is employed using a transient bi-dimensional model in cylindrical coordinates and is experimentally validated. Forty cases of cooling with four aspect ratios, five overall heat transfer coefficients and two different volumes are considered. Thermal losses for the environment in all tank walls (top, bottom and sidewalls) are allowable. The Buckingham theorem is applied to determine the non-dimensional groups in the cooling of thermal reservoirs and the corresponding correlations, in agreement with the numerical results.

Neutrino oscillations in a turbulent plasma

A new model for the joint neutrino flavor and plasma oscillations is introduced, in terms of the dynamics of the neutrino flavor polarization vector in a plasma background. Fundamental solutions are found for both time-invariant and time-dependent media, considering slow and fast variations of the electron plasma density. The model is shown to be described by a generalized Hamiltonian formalism. In the case of a broad spectrum of electron plasma waves, a statistical approach indicate the shift of both equilibrium value and frequency oscillation of flavor coherence, due to the existence of a turbulent plasma background.

Variational approach to the time-dependent Schrödinger-Newton equations

Using a variational approach based on a Lagrangian formulation and Gaussian trial functions, we derive a simple dynamical system that captures the main features of the time-dependent Schrödinger-Newton equations. With little analytical or numerical effort, the model furnishes information on the ground state density and energy eigenvalue, the linear frequencies, as well as the nonlinear long-time behaviour. Our results are in good agreement with those obtained through analytical estimates or numerical simulations of the full Schrödinger-Newton equations.

Wave dispersion derived from the square-root Klein-Gordon-Poisson system

Recently there has been great interest around quantum relativistic models for plasmas. In particular striking advances have been obtained by means of the Klein-Gordon-Maxwell system, which provides a first order approach to the relativistic regimes of quantum plasmas. It is a reliable method as long as the plasma spin dynamics is not a fundamental aspect, to be addressed using more refined (and heavier) models involving the Pauli-Schrödinger or Dirac equations. In this work a further simplification is considered, tracing back to the early days of relativistic quantum theory. Namely, we revisit the square-root Klein-Gordon-Poisson system, where the positive branch of the relativistic energy-momentum relation is mapped to a quantum wave equation. The associated linear wave propagation is analyzed and compared to the results in the literature. We determine physical parameters where the simultaneous quantum and relativistic effects can be noticeable in weakly coupled electrostatic plasmas.

An introduction to quantum plasmas

Shielding effects in non-degenerate and degenerate plasmas are compared. A detailed derivation of the Wigner-Poisson system is provided for electrostatic quantum plasmas where relativistic, spin and collisional effects are not essential. Later a detailed derivation of a quantum hydrodynamic model starting from the Wigner-Poisson system is shown. The route for this derivation considers the eikonal decomposition of the one-body wavefunctions of the quantum statistical mixture. The merits and limitations of the resulting quantum hydrodynamic model are discussed.

Nonlinear dynamics of electron-positron clusters

Electron-positron clusters are studied using a quantum hydrodynamic model that includes Coulomb and exchange interactions. A variational Lagrangian method is used to determine their stationary and dynamical properties. The cluster static features are validated against existing Hartree-Fock calculations. In the linear response regime, we investigate both dipole and monopole (breathing) modes. The dipole mode is reminiscent of the surface plasmon mode usually observed in metal clusters. The nonlinear regime is explored by means of numerical simulations. We show that, by exciting the cluster with a chirped laser pulse with slowly varying frequency (autoresonance), it is possible to efficiently separate the electron and positron populations on a timescale of a few tens of femtoseconds.

Quantum and classical dynamics of Langmuir wave packets

The quantum Zakharov system in three-spatial dimensions and an associated Lagrangian description, as well as its basic conservation laws are derived. In the adiabatic and semiclassical case, the quantum Zakharov system reduces to a quantum modified vector nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation for the envelope electric field. The Lagrangian structure for the resulting vector NLS equation is used to investigate the time-dependence of the Gaussian shaped localized solutions, via the Rayleigh-Ritz variational method. The formal classical limit is considered in detail. The quantum corrections are shown to prevent the collapse of localized Langmuir envelope fields, in both two and three-spatial dimensions. Moreover, the quantum terms can produce an oscillatory behavior of the width of the approximate Gaussian solutions. The variational method is shown to preserve the essential conservation laws of the quantum modified vector NLS equation.

Soliton solutions of 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equation by a potential control method

We present a class of three-dimensional solitary waves solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation, which governs the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). By imposing an external controlling potential, a desired time-dependent shape of the localized BEC excitation is obtained. The stability of some obtained localized solutions is checked by solving the time-dependent GP equation numerically with analytic solutions as initial conditions. The analytic solutions can be used to design external potentials to control the localized BECs in experiment.

Macroscopic description for a quantum plasma micro-instability: the quantum Weibel solution

The Weibel instability in the quantum plasma case is treated by means of a fluid-like (moments) approach. Quantum modifications to the macroscopic equations are then identified as effects of first or second kind. Quantum effects of the first kind correspond to a dispersive term, similar to the Bohm potential in the quantum hydrodynamic equations for plasmas. Effects of the second kind are due to the Fermi statistics of the charge carriers and can become the dominant influence for strong degeneracy. The macroscopic dispersion relations are of higher order than those for the classical Weibel instability. This corresponds to the presence of a cutoff wave-number even for the strong temperature anisotropy case.
