Exploring the association between R&D expenditure and the job quality in the European Union

Investment in research and development is a key factor in increasing countries' competitiveness. However, its impact can potentially be broader and include other socially relevant elements like job quality. In effect, the quantity of generated jobs is an incomplete indicator since it does not allow to conclude on the quality of the job generated. In this sense, this paper intends to explore the relevance of R&D investments for the job quality in the European Union between 2009 and 2018. For this purpose, we investigate the effects of R&D expenditures made by the business sector, government, and higher education sector on three dimensions of job quality. Three research methods are employed, i.e. univariate linear analysis, multiple linear analysis, and cluster analysis. The findings only confirm the association between R&D expenditure and the number of hours worked, such that the European Union countries with the highest R&D expenses are those with the lowest average weekly working hours.

Exploring the Impact of COVID-19 in the Sustainability of Airbnb Business Model

Society is undergoing many transformations and faces economic crises, environmental, social, and public health issues. At the same time, the Internet, mobile communications, cloud technologies, and social networks are growing rapidly and fostering the digitalization processes of business and society. It is in this context that the shared economy has assumed itself as a new social and economic system based on the sharing of resources and has allowed the emergence of innovative businesses like Airbnb. However, COVID-19 has challenged this business model in the face of restrictions imposed in the tourism sector. Its consequences are not exclusively short-term and may also call into question the sustainability of Airbnb. In this sense, this study aims to explore the sustainability of the Airbnb business model considering two theories which advocate that hosts can cover the short-term financial effects, while another defends a paradigm shift in the demand for long-term accommodations to ensure greater stability for hosts.

The Challenges of Assessing and Evaluating the Students at Distance

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a strong effect on higher education institutions with the closure of classroom teaching activities. In this unprecedented crisis, of global proportion, educators and families had to deal with unpredictability and learn new ways of teaching. This short essay aims to explore the challenges posed to Portuguese higher education institutions and to analyze the challenges posed to evaluation models. To this end, the relevance of formative and summative assessment models in distance education is explored and the perception of teachers and students about the practices adopted in remote assessment is discussed. On the teachers' side, there is a high concern about adopting fraud-free models, and an excessive focus on the summative assessment component that in the distance learning model has less preponderance when compared to the gradual monitoring and assessment processes of the students, while on the students' side, problems arise regarding equipment to follow the teaching sessions and concerns about their privacy, particularly when intrusive IT solutions request the access to their cameras, audio, and desktop.

Bibliometric Analysis of Agile Software Development

Agile methodologies are currently considered one of the main paradigms of software development. Its study, from a scientific point of view, has deserved prominence in recent years by the scientific community related to the area of software engineering. This study intends to perform a bibliometric analysis of the quantity, characteristics and scope of the most relevant studies published in this area of knowledge. The findings indicate that the number of studies published from 2010 to 2016 significantly increased, having reached a peak in 2015. The study identifies the main journals and conferences in the field and we also concluded that the majority of published studies are literature reviews of agile software development, and qualitative and quantitative research methods have identical number of publications.

e-commerce business models in the context of web3.0 paradigm

Web 3.0 promises to have a significant effect in users and businesses. It will change how people work and play, how companies use information to market and sell their products, as well as operate their businesses. The basic shift occurring in Web 3.0 is from information-centric to knowledge-centric patterns of computing. Web 3.0 will enable people and machines to connect, evolve, share and use knowledge on an unprecedented scale and in new ways that make our experience of the Internet better. Additionally, semantic technologies have the potential to drive significant improvements in capabilities and life cycle economics through cost reductions, improved efficiencies, enhanced effectiveness, and new functionalities that were not possible or economically feasible before. In this paper we look to the semantic web and Web 3.0 technologies as enablers for the creation of value and appearance of new business models. For that, we analyze the role and impact of Web 3.0 in business and we identify nine potential business models, based in direct and undirected revenue sources, which have emerged with the appearance of semantic web technologies.

Web 2.0 systems have drawn the attention of corporation, many of which now seek to adopt Web 2.0 technologies and transfer its benefits to their organizations. However, with the number of different social networking platforms appearing, privacy and security continuously has to be taken into account and looked at from different perspectives. This paper presents the most common security risks faced by the major Web 2.0 applications. Additionally, it introduces the most relevant paths and best practices to avoid these identified security risks in a corporate environment.
