Reducing the Tension Between the BICEP2 and the Planck Measurements: A Complete Exploration of the Parameter Space

A large inflationary tensor-to-scalar ratio r0.002=0.20−0.05+0.07r_\mathrm{0.002} = 0.20^{+0.07}_{-0.05} is reported by the BICEP2 team based on their B-mode polarization detection, which is outside of the 95%95\% confidence level of the Planck best fit model. We explore several possible ways to reduce the tension between the two by considering a model in which αsα_\mathrm{s}, ntn_\mathrm{t}, nsn_\mathrm{s} and the neutrino parameters NeffN_\mathrm{eff} and ΣmνΣm_\mathrmν are set as free parameters. Using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique to survey the complete parameter space with and without the BICEP2 data, we find that the resulting constraints on r0.002r_\mathrm{0.002} are consistent with each other and the apparent tension seems to be relaxed. Further detailed investigations on those fittings suggest that NeffN_\mathrm{eff} probably plays the most important role in reducing the tension. We also find that the results obtained from fitting without adopting the consistency relation do not deviate much from the consistency relation. With available Planck, WMAP, BICEP2 and BAO datasets all together, we obtain r0.002=0.14−0.11+0.05r_{0.002} = 0.14_{-0.11}^{+0.05}, nt=0.35−0.47+0.28n_\mathrm{t} = 0.35_{-0.47}^{+0.28}, ns=0.98−0.02+0.02n_\mathrm{s}=0.98_{-0.02}^{+0.02}, and αs=−0.0086−0.0189+0.0148α_\mathrm{s}=-0.0086_{-0.0189}^{+0.0148}; if the consistency relation is adopted, we get r0.002=0.22−0.06+0.05r_{0.002} = 0.22_{-0.06}^{+0.05}.

Constraints on the Brans-Dicke gravity theory with the Planck data

Based on the new cosmic CMB temperature data from the Planck satellite, the 9 year polarization data from the WMAP, the BAO distance ratio data from the SDSS and 6dF surveys, we place a new constraint on the Brans-Dicke theory. We adopt a parametrization $ζ=\ln(1+1/ω})$, where the general relativity (GR) limit corresponds to ζ=0ζ= 0. We find no evidence of deviation from general relativity. At 95% probability, −0.00246<ζ<0.00567-0.00246 < ζ< 0.00567, correspondingly, the region −407.0<ω<175.87-407.0 < ω<175.87 is excluded. If we restrict ourselves to the ζ>0ζ>0 (i.e. ω>0ω>0) case, then the 95% probability interval is ζ<0.00549ζ<0.00549, corresponding to ω>181.65ω> 181.65. We can also translate this result to a constraint on the variation of gravitational constant, and find the variation rate today as G˙=−1.42−2.27+2.48×10−13\dot{G}=-1.42^{+2.48}_{-2.27} \times 10^{-13} yr−1^{-1} (1σ1σ error bar), the integrated change since the epoch of recombination is δG/G=0.0104−0.0067+0.0186δG/G = 0.0104^{+0.0186}_{-0.0067} (1σ1σ error bar). These limits on the variation of gravitational constant are comparable with the precision of solar system experiments.

Role of t-channel meson exchange in S-wave pi N and K N scattering

The low-energy S-wave pi N and K N scatterings are studied by the K-matrix approach within the meson exchange framework. The t-channel meson exchanges, especially rho and sigma exchanges, are found to play a very important role in these two processes. The t-channel rho exchange determines the isospin structure of the scattering amplitudes, it gives attractive force in the low isospin state but repulsive force in the high isospin state. The t-channel sigma exchange gives a very large contribution in these two processes, while it is negligible in meson-meson S-wave scatterings.
