Generalised dihedral subalgebras from the Monster

The conjugacy classes of the Monster which occur in the McKay observation correspond to the isomorphism types of certain 2-generated subalgebras of the Griess algebra. Sakuma, Ivanov and others showed that these subalgebras match the classification of vertex algebras generated by two Ising conformal vectors, or of Majorana algebras generated by two axes. In both cases, the eigenvalues parametrising the theory are fixed to $α=\frac14,β=\frac1{32}$. We generalise these parameters and the algebras which depend on them, in particular finding the largest possible (nonassociative) axial algebras which satisfy the same key features, by working extensively with the underlying rings. The resulting algebras admit an associating symmetric bilinear form and satisfy the same 6-transposition property as the Monster; $α=\frac14,β=\frac1{32}$ turns out to be distinguished.

Jordan algebras and 3-transposition groups

An idempotent in a Jordan algebra induces a Peirce decomposition of the algebra into subspaces whose pairwise multiplication satisfies certain fusion rules $Φ(\frac{1}{2})$. On the other hand, $3$-transposition groups $(G,D)$ can be algebraically characterised as Matsuo algebras $M_α(G,D)$ with idempotents satisfying the fusion rules $Φ(α)$ for some $α$. We classify the Jordan algebras $J$ which are isomorphic to a Matsuo algebra $M_{1/2}(G,D)$, in which case $(G,D)$ is a subgroup of the (algebraic) automorphism group of $J$; the only possibilities are $G = \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ and $G = 3^2:2$. Along the way, we also obtain results about Jordan algebras associated to root systems.

Linear idempotents in Matsuo algebras

Matsuo algebras are an algebraic incarnation of 3-transposition groups with a parameter $α$, where idempotents takes the role of the transpositions. We show that a large class of idempotents in Matsuo algebras satisfy the Seress property, making these nonassociative algebras well-behaved analogously to associative algebras, Jordan algebras and vertex (operator) algebras. We calculate eigenvalues in the Matsuo algebra of ${\rm Sym}(n)$ for any $α$, generalising some vertex algebra results for which $α=\frac{1}{4}$. Finally, in the Matsuo algebra of the root system ${\rm D}_n$, we show $n-3$ conjugacy classes of involutions coming from the Weyl group are in natural bijection with idempotents in the algebra via their fusion rules.

Fusion rules from root systems I: case ${\rm A}_n$

Axial algebras are commutative algebras generated by idempotents; they generalise associative algebras by allowing the idempotents to have additional eigenvectors, controlled by fusion rules. If the fusion rules are $\mathbb{Z}/2$-graded, axial algebras afford representations of transposition groups. We consider axial representations of Weyl groups of simply-laced root systems, which are examples of regular $3$-transposition groups. We introduce coset axes, a special class of idempotents based on embeddings of transposition groups, and use them to study the propagation of fusion rules in axial algebras, for root system ${\rm A}_n$. This is related to the construction of lattice vertex operator algebras and we show it reflects on the fusion of modules for the Virasoro algebra when we specialise our construction.
