Statistical mechanics of dimers on quasiperiodic Ammann-Beenker tilings

We study classical dimers on two-dimensional quasiperiodic Ammann-Beenker (AB) tilings. Despite the lack of periodicity we prove that each infinite tiling admits 'perfect matchings' in which every vertex is touched by one dimer. We introduce an auxiliary 'AB$^*$' tiling obtained from the AB tiling by deleting all 8-fold coordinated vertices. The AB$^*$ tiling is again two-dimensional, infinite, and quasiperiodic. The AB$^*$ tiling has a single connected component, which admits perfect matchings. We find that in all perfect matchings, dimers on the AB$^*$ tiling lie along disjoint one-dimensional loops and ladders, separated by 'membranes', sets of edges where dimers are absent. As a result, the dimer partition function of the AB$^*$ tiling factorizes into the product of dimer partition functions along these structures. We compute the partition function and free energy per edge on the AB$^*$ tiling using an analytic transfer matrix approach. Returning to the AB tiling, we find that membranes in the AB$^*$ tiling become 'pseudomembranes', sets of edges which collectively host at most one dimer. This leads to a remarkable discrete scale-invariance in the matching problem. The structure suggests that the AB tiling should exhibit highly inhomogenous and slowly decaying connected dimer correlations. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we find evidence supporting this supposition in the form of connected dimer correlations consistent with power law behaviour. Within the set of perfect matchings we find quasiperiodic analogues to the staggered and columnar phases observed in periodic systems.

Classical Dimers on Penrose Tilings

We study the classical dimer model on rhombic Penrose tilings, whose edges and vertices may be identified with those of a bipartite graph. We find that Penrose tilings do not admit perfect matchings (defect-free dimer coverings). Instead, their maximum matchings have a monomer density of $81-50φ\approx 0.098$ in the thermodynamic limit, with $φ=\left(1+\sqrt{5}\right)/2$ the golden ratio. Maximum matchings divide the tiling into a fractal of nested closed regions bounded by loops that cannot be crossed by monomers. These loops connect second-nearest neighbour even-valence vertices, each of which lies on such a loop. Assigning a charge to each monomer with a sign fixed by its bipartite sublattice, we find that each bounded region has an excess of one charge, and a corresponding set of monomers, with adjacent regions having opposite net charge. The infinite tiling is charge neutral. We devise a simple algorithm for generating maximum matchings, and demonstrate that maximum matchings form a connected manifold under local monomer-dimer rearrangements. We show that dart-kite Penrose tilings feature an imbalance of charge between bipartite sub-lattices, leading to a minimum monomer density of $\left(7-4φ\right)/5\approx 0.106$ all of one charge.

Conformal Quasicrystals and Holography

Recent studies of holographic tensor network models defined on regular tessellations of hyperbolic space have not yet addressed the underlying discrete geometry of the boundary. We show that the boundary degrees of freedom naturally live on a novel structure, a conformal quasicrystal, that provides a discrete model of conformal geometry. We introduce and construct a class of one-dimensional conformal quasicrystals, and discuss a higher-dimensional example (related to the Penrose tiling). Our construction permits discretizations of conformal field theories that preserve an infinite discrete subgroup of the global conformal group at the cost of lattice periodicity.

Charge Order from Orbital-dependent Coupling Evidenced by NbSe$_2$

Niobium diselenide has long served as a prototype of two-dimensional charge ordering, believed to arise from an instability of the electronic structure analogous to the one-dimensional Peierls mechanism. Despite this, various anomalous properties have recently been identified experimentally which cannot be explained by Peierls-like weak-coupling theories. We consider instead a model with strong electron-phonon coupling, taking into account both the full momentum and orbital dependence of the coupling matrix elements. We show that both are necessary for a consistent description of the full range of experimental observations. We argue that NbSe$_2$ is typical in this sense, and that any charge-ordered material in more than one dimension will generically be shaped by the momentum and orbital dependence of its electron-phonon coupling as well as its electronic structure. The consequences will be observable in many charge-ordered materials, including cuprate superconductors.

Charge Ordering Geometries in Uniaxially-Strained NbSe$_2$

Recent STM experiments reveal niobium diselenide to support domains of striped (1Q) charge order side-by-side with its better-known triangular (3Q) phase, suggesting that small variations in local strain may induce a quantum phase transition between the two. We use a theoretical model of the charge order in NbSe$_2$, based on a strong momentum- and orbital-dependent electron-phonon coupling, to study the effect of uniaxial strain. We find that as little as $0.1\%$ anisotropic shift in phonon energies breaks the threefold symmetry in favor of a 1Q state, in agreement with the experimental results. The altered symmetries change the transition into the ordered state from weakly-first-order in the 3Q case, to second order in the 1Q regime. Modeling the pseudogap phase of NbSe$_2$ as the range of temperatures above the onset of long-range order in which phase coherence is destroyed by local phonon fluctuations, we find a shortening of the local ordering wavevector with increasing temperature, complementing recent X-ray diffraction observations within the low-temperature phase.

One-Dimensional Quasicrystals from Incommensurate Charge Order

Artificial quasicrystals are nowadays routinely manufactured, yet only two naturally occurring examples are known. We present a class of systems with the potential to be realized both artificially and in nature, in which the lowest energy state is a one-dimensional quasicrystal. These systems are based on incommensurately charge-ordered materials, in which the quasicrystalline phase competes with the formation of a regular array of discommensurations as a way of interpolating between incommensurate charge order at high temperatures and commensurate order at low temperatures. The nonlocal correlations characteristic of the quasicrystalline state emerge from a free-energy contribution localized in reciprocal space. We present a theoretical phase diagram showing that the required material properties for the appearance of such a ground state allow for one-dimensional quasicrystals to form in real materials. The result is a potentially wide class of one-dimensional quasicrystals.

Quasiperiodicity and 2D Topology in 1D Charge Ordered Materials

It has recently been argued that individual 1D quasicrystals can be ascribed 2D topological quantum numbers and a corresponding set of topologically protected edge modes. Here, we demonstrate the equivalence of such 1D quasicrystals to a mean-field treatment of incommensurate charge order in 1D materials. Using the fractal nature of the spectrum of commensurate charge-ordered states we consider incommensurate order as a limiting case of commensurate orders. We show that their topological properties arise from a 2D parameter space spanned by both phase and wave vector, bringing the observation of 2D edge modes in line with the standard classification of topological order. The equivalence also provides a set of real-world quasiperiodic materials which can be readily experimentally examined. We propose an experimental test of both the quasicrystalline and topological character of these systems in the form of a quantized adiabatic particle transport upon dragging the charge-ordered state.
