Boundary layer solution of the Boltzmann equation for specular boundary condition

In the paper, we establish the existence of steady boundary layer solution of Boltzmann equation with specular boundary condition in $L^2_{x,v}\cap L^\infty_{x,v}$ in half-space. The uniqueness, continuity and exponential decay of the solution are obtained, and such estimates are important to prove the Hilbert expansion of Boltzmann equation for half-space problem with specular boundary condition.

Nonlinear stability and existence of vortex sheets for inviscid liquid-gas two-phase flow

We are concerned with the vortex sheet solutions for the inviscid two-phase flow in two dimensions. In particular, the nonlinear stability and existence of compressible vortex sheet solutions under small perturbations are established by using a modification of the Nash-Moser iteration technique, where a priori estimates for the linearized equations have a loss of derivatives. Due to the jump of the normal derivatives of densities of liquid and gas, we obtain the normal estimates in the anisotropic Sobolev space, instead of the usual Sobolev space. New ideas and techniques are developed to close the energy estimates and derive the tame estimates for the two-phase flows.

Diffusive Wave in the Low Mach Limit for Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations

The low Mach limit for 1D non-isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes flow, whose density and temperature have different asymptotic states at infinity, is rigorously justified. The problems are considered on both well-prepared and ill-prepared data. For the well-prepared data, the solutions of compressible Navier-Stokes equations are shown to converge to a nonlinear diffusion wave solution globally in time as Mach number goes to zero when the difference between the states at $\pm\infty$ is suitably small. In particular, the velocity of diffusion wave is only driven by the variation of temperature. It is further shown that the solution of compressible Navier-Stokes system also has the same property when Mach number is small, which has never been observed before. The convergence rates on both Mach number and time are also obtained for the well-prepared data. For the ill-prepared data, the limit relies on the uniform estimates including weighted time derivatives and an extended convergence lemma. And the difference between the states at $\pm\infty$ can be arbitrary large in this case.

Incompressible Limit of Solutions of Multidimensional Steady Compressible Euler Equations

A compactness framework is formulated for the incompressible limit of approximate solutions with weak uniform bounds with respect to the adiabatic exponent for the steady Euler equations for compressible fluids in any dimension. One of our main observations is that the compactness can be achieved by using only natural weak estimates for the mass conservation and the vorticity. Another observation is that the incompressibility of the limit for the homentropic Euler flow is directly from the continuity equation, while the incompresibility of the limit for the full Euler flow is from a combination of all the Euler equations. As direct applications of the compactness framework, we establish two incompressible limit theorems for multidimensional steady Euler flows through infinitely long nozzles, which lead to two new existence theorems for the corresponding problems for multidimensional steady incompressible Euler equations.

Isometric Immersion of Complete Surfaces with Slowly Decaying Negative Gauss Curvature

The isometric immersion of two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds or surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean space is a fundamental problem in differential geometry. When the Gauss curvature is negative, the isometric immersion problem is considered in this paper through the Gauss-Codazzi system for the second fundamental forms. It is shown that if the Gauss curvature satisfies an integrability condition, the surface has a global smooth isometric immersion in the three-dimensional Euclidean space even if the Gauss curvature decays very slowly at infinity. The new idea of the proof is based on the novel observations on the decay properties of the Riemann invariants of the Gauss-Codazzi system. The weighted Riemann invariants are introduced and a comparison principle is applied with properly chosen control functions.

Macroscopic regularity for the Boltzmann equation

The regularity of solutions to the Boltzmann equation is a fundamental problem in the kinetic theory. In this paper, the case with angular cut-off is investigated. It is shown that the macroscopic parts of solutions to the Boltzmann equation, i.e. the density, momentum and total energy are continuous functions of $(x,t)$ in the region $\mathbb{R}^3\times(0,+\infty)$. More precisely, these macroscopic quantities immediately become continuous in any positive time even though they are initially discontinuous and the discontinuities of solutions propagate only in the microscopic level. It should be noted that such kind of phenomenon can not happen for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in which the initial discontinuities of the density never vanish in any finite time, see \cite{Hoff}. This hints that the Boltzmann equation has better regularity effect in the macroscopic level than compressible Navier-Stokes equations.

Isometric Immersion of Surface with Negative Gauss Curvature and the Lax-Friedrichs Scheme

The isometric immersion of two-dimensional Riemannian manifold with negative Gauss curvature into the three-dimensional Euclidean space is considered through the Gauss-Codazzi equations for the first and second fundamental forms. The large $L^\infty$ solution is obtained which leads to a $C^{1,1}$ isometric immersion. The approximate solutions are constructed by the the Lax-Friedrichs finite-difference scheme with the fractional step. The uniform estimate is established by studying the equations satisfied by the Riemann invariants and using the sign of the nonlinear part. The $H^{-1}$ compactness is also derived. A compensated compactness framework is applied to obtain the existence of large $L^\infty$ solution to the Gauss-Codazzi equations for the surfaces more general than those in literature.

Isometric Immersions of Surfaces with Two Classes of Metrics and Negative Gauss Curvature

The isometric immersion of two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds or surfaces with negative Gauss curvature into the three-dimensional Euclidean space is studied in this paper. The global weak solutions to the Gauss-Codazzi equations with large data in $L^\infty$ are obtained through the vanishing viscosity method and the compensated compactness framework. The $L^\infty$ uniform estimate and $H^{-1}$ compactness are established through a transformation of state variables and construction of proper invariant regions for two types of given metrics including the catenoid type and the helicoid type. The global weak solutions in $L^\infty$ to the Gauss-Codazzi equations yield the $L^\infty$ isometric immersions of surfaces with the given metrics.

Justification of Diffusion limit for the Boltzmann Equation with a non-trivial Profile

Under the diffusion scaling and a scaling assumption on the microscopic component, a non-classical fluid dynamic system was derived in \cite{BGLY} that is related to the system of ghost effect derived in \cite{Sone-2} in different settings. This paper aims to justify this limit system for a non-trivial background profile with slab symmetry. The result reveals not only the diffusion phenomena in the temperature and density, but also the flow of higher order in Knudsen number due to the gradient of the temperature. Precisely, we show that the solution to the Boltzmann equation converges to a diffusion wave with decay rates in both Knudsen number and time.

On the convergence rate of the nonlinear-hyperbolic systems for axonal transport

In this paper, we consider a class of nonlinear reaction-hyperbolic systems with relaxation terms as models for axonal transport in neuroscience. We show the Kruzkov entropy-satisfying BV-solutions of the systems converge towards the solution of an equilibrium model at the rate of $O(\sqrtδ)$ in L1 norm as the relaxation time $δ$ tends to zero. But we don't make sure the rate is optimal.

Stability of Superposition of Viscous Contact Wave and Rarefaction Waves for Compressible Navier-Stokes System

This paper is concerned with the large-time behavior of solutions for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes system. We show that the combination of viscous contact wave with rarefaction waves for the non-isentropic polytropic gas is stable under \emph{large} initial perturbation without the condition that the adiabatic exponent $γ$ is close to 1, provided the strength of the combination waves is suitably small.

Zero dissipation limit of full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with Riemann initial data

We consider the zero dissipation limit of the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with Riemann initial data in the case of superposition of two rarefaction waves and a contact discontinuity. It is proved that for any suitably small viscosity $\varepsilon$ and heat conductivity $κ$ satisfying the relation \eqref{viscosity}, there exists a unique global piecewise smooth solution to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Moreover, as the viscosity $\varepsilon$ tends to zero, the Navier-Stokes solution converges uniformly to the Riemann solution of superposition of two rarefaction waves and a contact discontinuity to the corresponding Euler equations with the same Riemann initial data away from the initial line $t=0$ and the contact discontinuity located at $x=0$.

On Multi-Dimensional Sonic-Subsonic Flow

In this paper, a compensated compactness framework is established for sonic-subsonic approximate solutions to the $n$-dimensional$(n\geq 2)$ Euler equations for steady irrotational flow that may contain stagnation points. This compactness framework holds provided that the approximate solutions are uniformly bounded and satisfy $H^{-1}_{loc}(Ω)$ compactness conditions. As illustration, we show the existence of sonic-subsonic weak solution to n-dimensional$(n\geq 2)$ Euler equations for steady irrotational flow past obstacles or through an infinitely long nozzle. This is the first result concerning the sonic-subsonic limit for $n$-dimension$(n\geq 3)$.

The Limit of the Boltzmann Equation to the Euler Equations for Riemann Problems

The convergence of the Boltzmann equaiton to the compressible Euler equations when the Knudsen number tends to zero has been a long standing open problem in the kinetic theory. In the setting of Riemann solution that contains the generic superposition of shock, rarefaction wave and contact discontinuity to the Euler equations, we succeed in justifying this limit by introducing hyperbolic waves with different solution backgrounds to capture the extra masses carried by the hyperbolic approximation of the rarefaction wave and the diffusion approximation of contact discontinuity.

Zero dissipation limit to rarefaction wave with vacuum for 1-D compressible Navier-Stokes equations

It is well-known that one-dimensional isentropic gas dynamics has two elementary waves, i.e., shock wave and rarefaction wave. Among the two waves, only the rarefaction wave can be connected with vacuum. Given a rarefaction wave with one-side vacuum state to the compressible Euler equations, we can construct a sequence of solutions to one-dimensional compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations which converge to the above rarefaction wave with vacuum as the viscosity tends to zero. Moreover, the uniform convergence rate is obtained. The proof consists of a scaling argument and elementary energy analysis based on the underlying rarefaction wave structures.

Fluid Dynamic Limit to the Riemann Solutions of Euler Equations: I. Superposition of rarefaction waves and contact discontinuity

Fluid dynamic limit to compressible Euler equations from compressible Navier-Stokes equations and Boltzmann equation has been an active topic with limited success so far. In this paper, we consider the case when the solution of the Euler equations is a Riemann solution consisting two rarefaction waves and a contact discontinuity and prove this limit for both Navier-Stokes equations and the Boltzmann equation when the viscosity, heat conductivity coefficients and the Knudsen number tend to zero respectively. In addition, the uniform convergence rates in terms of the above physical parameters are also obtained. It is noted that this is the first rigorous proof of this limit for a Riemann solution with superposition of three waves even though the fluid dynamic limit for a single wave has been proved.

Vanishing Viscosity Limit for Isentropic Navier-Stokes Equations with Density-dependent Viscosity

In this paper, we study the vanishing viscosity limit of one-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity, to the isentropic compressible Euler equations. Based on several new uniform estimates to the viscous systems, in addition to the framework recently established by G. Chen and M. Perepelitsa, we justify that the finite energy solution of the isentropic compressible Euler equations for a large class of initial data can be obtained as the inviscid limit of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations even when the viscosity depends on the density.

Hydrodynamic Limit of the Boltzmann Equation with Contact Discontinuities

The hydrodynamic limit for the Boltzmann equation is studied in the case when the limit system, that is, the system of Euler equations contains contact discontinuities. When suitable initial data is chosen to avoid the initial layer, we prove that there exists a unique solution to the Boltzmann equation globally in time for any given Knudsen number. And this family of solutions converge to the local Maxwellian defined by the contact discontinuity of the Euler equations uniformly away from the discontinuity as the Knudsen number $\varepsilon$ tends to zero. The proof is obtained by an appropriately chosen scaling and the energy method through the micro-macro decomposition.
