Lessons from the AdKDD'21 Privacy-Preserving ML Challenge

Designing data sharing mechanisms providing performance and strong privacy guarantees is a hot topic for the Online Advertising industry. Namely, a prominent proposal discussed under the Improving Web Advertising Business Group at W3C only allows sharing advertising signals through aggregated, differentially private reports of past displays. To study this proposal extensively, an open Privacy-Preserving Machine Learning Challenge took place at AdKDD'21, a premier workshop on Advertising Science with data provided by advertising company Criteo. In this paper, we describe the challenge tasks, the structure of the available datasets, report the challenge results, and enable its full reproducibility. A key finding is that learning models on large, aggregated data in the presence of a small set of unaggregated data points can be surprisingly efficient and cheap. We also run additional experiments to observe the sensitivity of winning methods to different parameters such as privacy budget or quantity of available privileged side information. We conclude that the industry needs either alternate designs for private data sharing or a breakthrough in learning with aggregated data only to keep ad relevance at a reasonable level.

MarbleNet: Deep 1D Time-Channel Separable Convolutional Neural Network for Voice Activity Detection

We present MarbleNet, an end-to-end neural network for Voice Activity Detection (VAD). MarbleNet is a deep residual network composed from blocks of 1D time-channel separable convolution, batch-normalization, ReLU and dropout layers. When compared to a state-of-the-art VAD model, MarbleNet is able to achieve similar performance with roughly 1/10-th the parameter cost. We further conduct extensive ablation studies on different training methods and choices of parameters in order to study the robustness of MarbleNet in real-world VAD tasks.

Stimulus-Dependent Frequency Modulation of Information Transmission in Neural Systems

Neural oscillations are universal phenomena and can be observed at different levels of neural systems, from single neuron to macroscopic brain. The frequency of those oscillations are related to the brain functions. However, little is know about how the oscillating frequency of neural system affects neural information transmission in them. In this paper, we investigated how the signal processing in single neuron is modulated by subthreshold membrane potential oscillation generated by upstream rhythmic neural activities. We found that the high frequency oscillations facilitate the transferring of strong signals, whereas slow oscillations the weak signals. Though the capacity of information convey for weak signal is low in single neuron, it is greatly enhanced when weak signals are transferred by multiple pathways with different oscillation phases. We provided a simple phase plane analysis to explain the mechanism for this stimulus-dependent frequency modulation in the leakage integrate-and-fire neuron model. Those results provided a basic understanding of how the brain could modulate its information processing simply through oscillating frequency.

Three-dimensional graphene skeletons supported nickel molybdate nanowire composite as novel ultralight electrode for supercapacitors

Nickel molybdate (NiMoO$_{4}$) nanowires were prepared on chemical-vapor-deposition-grown three-dimensional graphene skeletons by hydrothermal method. The X-ray diffraction and Raman results show that NiMoO$_{4}$ is $α$ phase. This binder-free and ultralight graphene/ NiMoO$_{4}$ composite was used as a positive electrode for supercapacitors. This electrode presents a high specific capacitance of 1194 F g$^{-1}$ at 12 mA cm$^{-2}$ and the good stability with a cycling efficiency of 97.3% after 1000 cycles. Further, the energy density reaches an energy density of 41 Wh kg$^{-1}$ at a steady power density of 1319 W kg$^{-1}$. These results demonstrate the potential of the designed composite for the future flexible and lightweight energy storage.

Particle transfer and fusion cross-section for Super-heavy nuclei in dinuclear system

Within the dinuclear system (DNS) conception, instead of solving Fokker-Planck Equation (FPE) analytically, the Master equation is solved numerically to calculate the fusion probability of super-heavy nuclei, so that the harmonic oscillator approximation to the potential energy of the DNS is avoided. The relative motion concerning the energy, the angular momentum, and the fragment deformation relaxations is explicitly treated to couple with the diffusion process, so that the nucleon transition probabilities, which are derived microscopically, are time-dependent. Comparing with the analytical solution of FPE, our results preserve more dynamical effects. The calculated evaporation residue cross sections for one-neutron emission channel of Pb-based reactions are basically in agreement with the known experimental data within one order of magnitude.
