Joint integrability and spectral rigidity for Anosov diffeomorphisms

Let $f\colon\mathbb{T}^d\to\mathbb{T}^d$ be an Anosov diffeomorphism whose linearization $A\in{\rm GL}(d,\mathbb{Z})$ is irreducible. Assume that $f$ is also absolutely partially hyperbolic where a weak stable subbundle is considered as the center subbundle. We show that if the strong stable and unstable subbundles are jointly integrable, then $f$ is dynamically coherent and all foliations match corresponding linear foliation under the conjugacy to the linearization $A$. Moreover, $f$ admits the finest dominated splitting in weak stable subbundle with dimensions matching those for $A$, and it has spectral rigidity along all these subbundles. In dimension 4 we are also able to obtain a similar result which allows to group the weak stable and unstable subbundles into a center subbundle and assumes joint integrability of strong stable and unstable subbundles. As an application, we show that for every symplectic diffeomorphism $f\in{\rm Diff}^2_ω(\mathbb{T}^4)$ which is $C^1$-close to an irreducible non-conformal automorphism $A\in{\rm Sp}(4,\mathbb{Z})$, the extremal subbundles of $f$ are jointly integrable if and only if $f$ is smoothly conjugate to $A$.

Abelian Livshits theorems and geometric applications

We introduce a notion of abelian cohomology in the context of smooth flows. This is an equivalence relation which is weaker than the standard cohomology equivalence relation for flows. We develop Livshits theory for abelian cohomology over transitive Anosov flows. In particular, we prove an abelian Livshits theorem for homologically full Anosov flows. Then we apply this theorem to strengthen marked length spectrum rigidity for negatively curved surfaces. We also present an application to rigidity of contact Anosov flows. Some new results on homologically full Anosov flows are also given.

Surgery for partially hyperbolic dynamical systems II. Blow-up of a complex curve

In this paper we use the blow-up surgery introduced in [G] to produce new higher dimensional partially hyperbolic flows. The main contribution of the paper is the slow-down construction which accompanies the blow-up construction. This new ingredient allows to dispose of a rather strong domination assumption which was crucial for results in [G]. Consequently we gain more flexibility which allows to construct new volume-preserving partially hyperbolic flows as well as new examples which are not fiberwise Anosov. The latter are produced by starting with the geodesic flow on complex hyperbolic manifold which admits a totally geodesic complex curve. Then by performing the slow-down first and the blow-up second we obtain a new (volume-preserving) partially hyperbolic flows.

Anomalous Anosov flows revisited

This paper is devoted to higher dimensional Anosov flows and consists of two parts. In the first part, we investigate fiberwise Anosov flows on affine torus bundles which fiber over 3-dimensional Anosov flows. We provide a dichotomy result for such flows --- they are either suspensions of Anosov diffeomorphisms or the stable and unstable distributions have equal dimensions. In the second part, we give a new surgery type construction of Anosov flows, which yields non-transitive Anosov flows in all odd dimensions.

Bootstrap for local rigidity of Anosov automorphisms on the 3-torus

We establish a strong form of local rigidity for hyperbolic automorphisms of the 3-torus with real spectrum. Namely, let $L\colon\mathbb T^3\to\mathbb T^3$ be a hyperbolic automorphism of the 3-torus with real spectrum and let $f$ be a $C^1$ small perturbation of $L$. Then $f$ is smoothly ($C^\infty$) conjugate to $L$ if and only if obstructions to $C^1$ conjugacy given by the eigenvalues at periodic points of $f$ vanish. By combining our result and a local rigidity result of Kalinin and Sadovskaya for conformal automorphisms this completes the local rigidity program for hyperbolic automorphisms in dimension 3. Our work extends de la Llave-Marco-Moriyón 2-dimensional local rigidity theory.

On bundles that admit fiberwise hyperbolic dynamics

This paper is devoted to rigidity of smooth bundles which are equipped with fiberwise geometric or dynamical structure. We show that the fiberwise associated sphere bundle to a bundle whose leaves are equipped with (continuously varying) metrics of negative curvature is a topologically trivial bundle when either the base space is simply connected or, more generally, when the bundle is fiber homotopically trivial. We present two very different proofs of this result: a geometric proof and a dynamical proof. We also establish a number of rigidity results for bundles which are equipped with fiberwise Anosov dynamical systems. Finally, we present a number of examples which show that our results are sharp in certain ways or illustrate necessity of various assumptions.

Local rigidity for Anosov automorphisms

We consider an irreducible Anosov automorphism L of a torus T^d such that no three eigenvalues have the same modulus. We show that L is locally rigid, that is, L is C^1 conjugate to any C^1-small perturbation f with the same periodic data. We also prove that toral automorphisms satisfying these assumptions are generic in SL(d,Z). Examples constructed in the Appendix by Rafael de la Llave show importance of the assumption on the eigenvalues.

Partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with compact center foliations

Let f:M->M be a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism such that all of its center leaves are compact. We prove that Sullivan's example of a circle foliation that has arbitrary long leaves cannot be the center foliation of f. This is proved by thorough study of the accessible boundaries of the center-stable and the center-unstable leaves. Also we show that a finite cover of f fibers over an Anosov toral automorphism if one of the following conditions is met: 1. the center foliation of f has codimension 2, or 2. the center leaves of f are simply connected leaves and the unstable foliation of f is one-dimensional.

Diffeomorphisms Holder conjugate to Anosov diffeomorphisms

We show by means of a counterexample that a $C^{1+Lip}$ diffeomorphism Holder conjugate to an Anosov diffeomorphism is not necessarily Anosov. The counterexample can bear higher smoothness up to $C^3$. Also we include a result from the 2006 Ph.D. thesis of T. Fisher: a $C^{1+Lip}$ diffeomorphism Holder conjugate to an Anosov diffeomorphism is Anosov itself provided that Holder exponents of the conjugacy and its inverse are sufficiently large.
