Linearity of graph products

In this work we prove that, given a simplicial graph $Γ$ and a family $\mathcal{G}$ of linear groups over a domain $R$, the graph product $Γ\mathcal{G}$ is linear over $R[\underline t]$, where $\underline t$ is a tuple of finitely many linearly independent variables. As a consequence we obtain that any graph product of finitely many groups linear over the complex numbers is again a linear group over the complex numbers. This solves an open problem of Hsu and Wise in the case of faithful representations over $\mathbb C$.

Groups satisfying Kaplansky's stable finiteness conjecture

We prove that every {finitely generated residually finite}-by-sofic group satisfies Kaplansky's direct and stable finiteness conjectures with respect to all noetherian rings. We use this result to provide countably many new examples of finitely presented non-LEA groups, for which soficity is still undecided, satisfying these two conjectures. Deligne's famous example of a non residually finite group is among our examples, along with the families of amalgamated free products SL_n(Z[1/p])*_{F_r}SL_n(Z[1/p]) and HNN extensions SL_n(Z[1/p])*_{F_r}, where p>2 is a prime, n>2 and F_r is a free group of rank r, for all r>1.

Residual properties of free products

Let C be a class of groups. We give sufficient conditions ensuring that a free product of residually C groups is again residually C, and analogous conditions are given for locally embeddable into C groups. As a corollary, we obtain that the class of residually amenable groups and the one of LEA groups (or initially subamenable groups in the terminology of Gromov) are closed under taking free products. Moreover, we consider the pro-C topology and we characterize special HNN extensions and amalgamated free products that are residually C, where C is a suitable class of groups. In this way, we describe special HNN extensions and amalgamated free products that are residually amenable.

Residual properties of graph products of groups

We prove that the class of residually C groups is closed under taking graph products, provided that C is closed under taking subgroups, finite direct products and that free-by-C groups are residually C. As a consequence, we show that local embeddability into various classes of groups is stable under graph products. In particular, we prove that graph products of residually amenable groups are residually amenable, and that locally embeddable into amenable groups are closed under taking graph products.

Scale function vs Topological entropy

In the realm of topological automorphisms of totally disconnected locally compact groups, the scale function introduced by Willis in \cite{Willis} is compared with the topological entropy. We prove that the logarithm of the scale function is always dominated by the topological entropy and we provide examples showing that this inequality can be strict. Moreover, we give a condition equivalent to the equality between these two invariants. Various properties of the scale function, inspired by those of the topological entropy, are presented.
