Cosmological Relaxation from Dark Fermion Production

We consider the cosmological relaxation solution to the electroweak hierarchy problem using the fermion production as a dominant friction force. In our approach, neither super-Planckian field excursions nor a large number of e-folds arise, and scanning over thermal Higgs mass squared is avoided. The produced fermions from the relaxion source through the derivative coupling are SM-singlets, what we call dark fermions, and they can serve as the keV scale warm dark matter candidates.

Large Field Inflation from Axion Mixing

We study the general multi-axion systems, focusing on the possibility of large field inflation driven by axions. We find that through axion mixing from a non-diagonal metric on the moduli space and/or from Stückelberg coupling to a U(1) gauge field, an effectively super-Planckian decay constant can be generated without the need of "alignment" in the axion decay constants. We also investigate the consistency conditions related to the gauge symmetries in the multi-axion systems, such as vanishing gauge anomalies and the potential presence of generalized Chern-Simons terms. Our scenario applies generally to field theory models whose axion periodicities are intrinsically sub-Planckian, but it is most naturally realized in string theory. The types of axion mixings invoked in our scenario appear quite commonly in D-brane models, and we present its implementation in type II superstring theory. Explicit stringy models exhibiting all the characteristics of our ideas are constructed within the frameworks of Type IIA intersecting D6-brane models on T6/OR and Type IIB intersecting D7-brane models on Swiss-Cheese Calabi-Yau orientifolds.

Widening the Axion Window via Kinetic and Stückelberg Mixings

We point out that kinetic and Stückelberg mixings that are generically present in the low energy effective action of axions can significantly widen the window of axion decay constants. We show that an effective super-Planckian decay constant can be obtained even when the axion kinetic matrix has only sub-Planckian entries. Our minimal model involves only two axions, a Stückelberg U(1) and a modest rank instanton generating non-Abelian group. Below the mass of the Stückelberg U(1), there is only a single axion with a non-perturbatively generated potential. In contrast to previous approaches, the enhancement of the axion decay constant is not tied to the number of degrees of freedom introduced. We also discuss how kinetic mixings can lower the decay constant to the desired axion dark matter window. String theory embeddings of this scenario and their phenomenological features are briefly discussed.

Probing Hidden Sectors with Stückelberg U(1) Gauge Fields

We propose a framework in which visible matter interacts with matter from a hidden sector through mass mixings of Stückelberg U(1) gauge fields. In contrast to other Z' mediation scenarios, our setup has the added appealing features that (i) the choice of Z's can be significantly broadened without necessarily introducing unwanted exotic matter and (ii) there can be sizable tree-level interactions between the visible and hidden sectors. String theory embeddings of this scenario and their phenomenological features are briefly discussed.

Milli-Charged Dark Matter in Quantum Gravity and String Theory

We examine the milli-charged dark matter scenario from a string theory perspective. In this scenario, kinetic and mass mixings of the photon with extra U(1) bosons are claimed to give rise to small electric charges, carried by dark matter particles, whose values are determined by continuous parameters of the theory. This seems to contradict folk theorems of quantum gravity that forbid the existence of irrational charges in theories with a single massless gauge field. By considering the underlying structure of the U(1) mass matrix that appears in type II string compactifications, we show that milli-charges arise exclusively through kinetic mixing, and require the existence of at least two exactly massless gauge bosons.

Soft branes in supersymmetry-breaking backgrounds

We revisit the analysis of effective field theories resulting from non-supersymmetric perturbations to supersymmetric flux compactifications of the type-IIB superstring with an eye towards those resulting from the backreaction of a small number of anti-D3-branes. Independently of the background, we show that the low-energy Lagrangian describing the fluctuations of a stack of probe D3-branes exhibits soft supersymmetry breaking, despite perturbations to marginal operators that were not fully considered in some previous treatments. We take this as an indication that the breaking of supersymmetry by anti-D3-branes or other sources may be spontaneous rather than explicit. In support of this, we consider the action of an anti-D3-brane probing an otherwise supersymmetric configuration and identify a candidate for the corresponding goldstino.

Heavy Quark Expansion in 1/\hat{m}_Q and |V_{cb}| Extraction

The dressed heavy quark mass \hat{m}_Q=m_Q+\bar{Λ} with \bar{Λ} being the binding energy is introduced to characterize the heavy hadrons containing a single heavy quark. A heavy quark expansion in terms of the inverse of the dressed heavy quark mass 1/\hat{m}_Q is presented with a complete decomposition of the full field and integrating out the small components. The heavy quark-antiquark coupling effects are included in the finite mass corrections. It is shown that the 1/\hat{m}_Q expansion is more favorable in application. The extraction of |V_{cb}| from exclusive B decays is studied by using such a new expansion approach.
