Comparison of topological charge definitions in Lattice QCD

In this paper, we show a comparison of different definitions of the topological charge on the lattice. We concentrate on one small-volume ensemble with 2 flavours of dynamical, maximally twisted mass fermions and use three more ensembles to analyze the approach to the continuum limit. We investigate several fermionic and gluonic definitions. The former include the index of the overlap Dirac operator, the spectral flow of the Wilson--Dirac operator and the spectral projectors. For the latter, we take into account different discretizations of the topological charge operator and various smoothing schemes to filter out ultraviolet fluctuations: the gradient flow, stout smearing, APE smearing, HYP smearing and cooling. We show that it is possible to perturbatively match different smoothing schemes and provide a well-defined smoothing scale. We relate the smoothing parameters for cooling, stout and APE smearing to the gradient flow time $τ$. In the case of hypercubic smearing the matching is performed numerically. We investigate which conditions have to be met to obtain a valid definition of the topological charge and susceptibility and we argue that all valid definitions are highly correlated and allow good control over topology on the lattice.

A Mixed Action Analysis of $η$ and $η'$ Mesons

We study $η$ and $η'$ mesons and their mixing angle in a mixed action approach with so-called Osterwalder-Seiler valence quarks on a Wilson twisted mass sea. The gauge configurations have been generated by ETMC for $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical quark flavours and for three values of the lattice spacing. The main results are that differences in between the mixed action and the unitary approach vanish towards the continuum limit with the expected rate of $\mathcal{O}(a^2)$. The individual size of the lattice artifacts depends, however, strongly on the observable used to match unitary and valence actions. Moreover, we show that for the $η$ mass valence and valence plus sea quark mass dependence differ significantly. Hence, in this case a re-tuning of the simulation parameters in the valence sector only is not sufficient to compensate for mismatches in the original quark masses.

Comparison of different lattice definitions of the topological charge

We present a comparison of different definitions of the topological charge on the lattice, using a small-volume ensemble with 2 flavours of dynamical twisted mass fermions. The investigated definitions are: index of the overlap Dirac operator, spectral projectors, spectral flow of the Hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator and field theoretic with different kinds of smoothing of gauge fields (HYP and APE smearings, gradient flow, cooling). We also show some results on the topological susceptibility.

Investigating a mixed action approach for η and η' mesons in Nf=2+1+1 lattice QCD

We present results for a test of a mixed action approach with Osterwalder-Seiler valence quarks on a Wilson twisted mass sea for the example η, η' mesons. Flavour singlet pseudoscalar mesons obtain significant contributions from disconnected diagrams and are, therefore, expected to be particularly sensitive to mixed regularisations. We employ different procedures for matching valence and sea quark actions and show that the results agree in the continuum limit.

Properties of pseudoscalar flavour-singlet mesons from 2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD

We study properties of pseudoscalar flavour-singlet mesons from Wilson twisted mass lattice QCD with Nf=2+1+1 dynamical quark flavors. Results for masses are presented at three values of the lattice spacing and light quark masses corresponding to values of the pion mass from 230 MeV to 500 MeV. We briefly discuss scaling effects and the light and strange quark mass dependence of the eta mass. In addition we present an exploratory study using Osterwalder-Seiler type strange and charm valence quarks. This approach avoids some of the complications of the twisted mass heavy doublet. We present first results for matching valence and unitary actions and a comparison of statistical uncertainties.

Testing the stochastic LapH method in the twisted mass formulation

We present first results using the stochastic Laplace-Heaviside (sLapH) method in the twisted mass formulation. The calculations are performed on gauge configurations provided by the European Twisted Mass (ETM) collaboration with 2+1+1 dynamical quark flavours at a single value of the lattice spacing. In particular, we compute disconnected contributions to flavour singlet pseudo-scalar mesons and compare sLapH to standard volume noise methods.

Vacuum structure and string tension in Yang-Mills dimeron ensembles

We numerically simulate ensembles of SU(2) Yang-Mills dimeron solutions with a statistical weight determined by the classical action and perform a comprehensive analysis of their properties. In particular, we examine the extent to which these ensembles capture topological and confinement properties of the Yang-Mills vacuum. This further allows us to test the classic picture of meron-induced quark confinement as triggered by dimeron dissociation. At small bare couplings, spacial, topological-charge and color correlations among the dimerons generate a short-range order which screens topological charges. With increasing coupling this order weakens rapidly, however, in part because the dimerons gradually dissociate into their meron constituents. Monitoring confinement properties by evaluating Wilson-loop expectation values, we find the growing disorder due to these progressively liberated merons to generate a finite and (with the coupling) increasing string tension. The short-distance behavior of the static quark-antiquark potential, on the other hand, is dominated by small, "instanton-like" dimerons. String tension, action density and topological susceptibility of the dimeron ensembles in the physical coupling region turn out to be of the order of standard values. Hence the above results demonstrate without reliance on weak-coupling or low-density approximations that the dissociating dimeron component in the Yang-Mills vacuum can indeed produce a meron-populated confining phase. The density of coexisting, hardly dissociated and thus instanton-like dimerons seems to remain large enough, on the other hand, to reproduce much of the additional phenomenology successfully accounted for by non-confining instanton vacuum models. Hence dimeron ensembles should provide an efficient basis for a rather complete description of the Yang-Mills vacuum.
