Loss of Antibunching

We describe some of the main external mechanisms that lead to a loss of antibunching, i.e., that spoil the character of a given quantum light to deliver its photons separated the ones from the others. Namely, we consider contamination by noise, a time jitter in the photon detection and the effect of frequency filtering (or detection with finite bandwidth). The emission from a two-level system under both incoherent and coherent driving is taken as a particular case of special interest. The coherent case is further separated into its vanishing (Heitler) and high (Mollow) driving regimes. We provide analytical solutions which, in the case of filtering, unveil an unsuspected structure in the transitions from perfect antibunching to thermal (incoherent case) or uncorrelated (coherent case) emission. The experimental observations of these basic and fundamental transitions would provide another compelling evidence of the correctness and importance of the theory of frequency-resolved photon correlations.

$N$-phonon bundle emission via the anti-Stokes process

We demonstrate theoretically the bundle emission of $n$ strongly correlated phonons in an acoustic cavity QED system. The mechanism relies on anti-Stokes resonances that generate super-Rabi oscillations between states with a large difference in their number of excitations, which, combined with dissipation, transfer coherently pure $n$-phonon states outside of the cavity. This process works with close to perfect purity over a wide range of parameters and is tunable optically with well-resolved operation conditions. This broadens the realm of quantum phononics, with potential applications for on-chip quantum information processing, quantum metrology, and engineering of new types of quantum devices, such as optically heralded $N$-phonon guns.

Finite-energy accelerating beam dynamics in wavelet-based representations

Accelerating beams are wave packets which appear to spontaneously accelerate without external potentials or applied forces. Since their first physical realisation in the form of Airy beams, they have found applications on various platforms, spanning from optics to plasma physics. We investigate the dynamics of examples of finite-energy accelerating beams derived from catastrophe theory. We use a Madelung transformation in momentum-space, combined with a wavelet transformed analysis, to demonstrate that the beams' properties arise from a special type of vanishing self-interference. We identify the modes responsible for the wave packet's acceleration and we derive the general acceleration for higher-order cupsoid-related beams. We also demonstrate how bright solitons resulting from nonlinear Airy beams can be unambiguously detected using the wavelet transform. This methodology will allow for a better understanding of nontrivial wave packet dynamics.

Tuning photon statistics with coherent fields

Photon correlations, as measured by Glauber's $n$-th order coherence functions $g^{(n)}$, are highly sought to be minimized and/or maximized. In systems that are coherently driven, so-called blockades can give rise to strong correlations according to two scenarios based on level-repulsion (conventional blockade) or interferences (unconventional blockade). Here we show how these two approaches relate to the admixing of a coherent state with a quantum state such as a squeezed state for the simplest and most recurrent case. The emission from a variety of systems, such as resonance fluorescence, the Jaynes-Cummings model or microcavity polaritons, as a few examples of a large family of quantum optical sources, are shown to be particular cases of such admixtures, that can further be doctored-up externally by adding an amplitude- and phase-controlled coherent field with the effect of tuning the photon statistics from exactly zero to infinity. We show how such an understanding also allows to classify photon statistics throughout platforms according to conventional and unconventional features, with the effect of optimizing the correlations and with possible spectroscopic applications. In particular, we show how configurations that can realize simultaneously conventional and unconventional antibunching bring the best of both worlds: huge antibunching (unconventional) with large populations and being robust to dephasing (conventional).

Impact of detuning and dephasing on a laser-corrected subnatural-linewidth single-photon source

The elastic scattering peak of a resonantly driven two-level system has been argued to provide narrow-linewidth antibunched photons. Although independent measurements of spectral width on the one hand and antibunching on the other hand do seem to show that this is the case, a joint measurement reveals that only one or the other of these attributes can be realised in the direct emission. We discuss a scheme which interferes the emission with a laser to produce simultaneously single photons of subnatural linewidth. In particular, we consider the effect of dephasing and of the detuning between the driving laser and/or the detector with the emitter. We find that also in presence of dephasing, our scheme brings considerable improvement as compared to the standard scheme.

Criterion for Single Photon Sources

We propose a criterion to classify and compare sources of single photons: the $p$-norm of their $k$th-order photon correlations. While ideally one should use the uniform norm with $p\rightarrow\infty$, in practice, the 3-norm already allows a meaningful comparison and shows the serious limitations of the usual criterion based on the second order correlation $g^{(2)}$ only. We apply this new criterion to a large family of popular single photon sources and show that some of them do not, in fact, qualify for this function. The best sources from our selections consist of a cascade of two-level systems, improving on the otherwise standard low-power resonant excitation of a single two-level system.

Enhanced two-photon emission from a dressed biexciton

Radiative two-photon cascades from biexcitons in semiconductor quantum dots under resonant two-photon excitation are promising candidates for the generation of photon pairs. In this work, we propose a scheme to obtain two-photon emission that allows to operate under very intense driving fields. This approach relies on the Purcell enhancement of two-photon virtual transitions between states of the biexciton dressed by the laser. The richness provided by the biexcitonic level structure allows to reach a variety of regimes, from antibunched and bunched photon pairs with polarization orthogonal to the driving field, to polarization entangled two-photon emission. This evidences that the general paradigm of two-photon emission from a ladder of dressed states can find interesting, particular implementations in a variety of systems.

Relaxation Oscillations in the Formation of a Polariton Condensate

We report observation of oscillations in the dynamics of a microcavity polariton condensate formed under pulsed non resonant excitation. While oscillations in a condensate have always been attributed to Josephson mechanisms due to a chemical potential unbalance, here we show that under some localisation conditions of the condensate, they may arise from relaxation oscillations, a pervasive classical dynamics that repeatedly provokes the sudden decay of a reservoir, shutting off relaxation as the reservoir is replenished. Using non-resonant excitation, it is thus possible to obtain condensate injection pulses with a record frequency of 0:1 THz.

Violation of classical inequalities by photon frequency-filtering

The violation of the Cauchy-Schwarz and Bell inequalities ranks among the major evidences of the genuinely quantum nature of an emitter. We show that by dispensing from the usual approximation of mode correlations and studying directly correlations between the physical reality -the photons- these violations can be optimized. This is achieved by extending the concept of photon correlations to all frequencies in all the possible windows of detections, with no prejudice to the supposed origin of the photons. We identify the regions of quantum emission as rooted in collective de-excitation involving virtual states instead of, as previously assumed, cascaded transitions between real states.

Fluctuation induced luminescence sidebands in the emission spectra of resonantly driven quantum dots

We describe how complex fluctuations of the local environment of an optically active quantum dot can leave rich fingerprints in its emission spectrum. A new feature, termed "Fluctuation Induced Luminescence" (FIL), is observed to arise from extremely rare fluctuation events that have a dramatic impact on the response of the system-so called "black swan" events. A quantum dissipative master equation formalism is developed to describe this effect phenomenologically. Experiments performed on single quantum dots subject to electrical noise show excellent agreement with our theory, producing the characteristic FIL sidebands.

Theory of frequency-filtered and time-resolved N-photon correlations

A theory of correlations between N photons of given frequencies and detected at given time delays is presented. These correlation functions are usually too cumbersome to be computed explicitly. We show that they are obtained exactly through intensity correlations between two-level sensors in the limit of their vanishing coupling to the system. This allows the computation of correlation functions hitherto unreachable. The uncertainties in time and frequency of the detection, which are necessary variables to describe the system, are intrinsic to the theory. We illustrate the formalism with the Jaynes--Cummings model, showing how correlations of various peaks at zero or finite time delays bring new insights into the dynamics of open quantum systems.

Climbing the Jaynes-Cummings ladder by photon counting

We present a new method to observe direct experimental evidence of Jaynes--Cummings nonlinearities in a strongly dissipative cavity quantum electrodynamics system, where large losses compete with the strong light-matter interaction. This is a highly topical problem, particularly for quantum dots in microcavities where transitions from higher rungs of the Jaynes--Cummings ladder remain to be evidenced explicitly. We compare coherent and incoherent excitations of the system and find that resonant excitation of the detuned emitter make it possible to unambiguously evidence few photon quantum nonlinearities in currently available experimental systems.

Generation of a two-photon state from a quantum dot in a microcavity under incoherent and coherent continuous excitation

We analyze the impact of both an incoherent and a coherent continuous excitation on our proposal to generate a two-photon state from a quantum dot in a microcavity [New J. Phys. 13, 113014 (2011)]. A comparison between exact numerical results and analytical formulas provides the conditions to efficiently generate indistinguishable and simultaneous pairs of photons under both types of excitation.

Exciton-polariton mediated superconductivity

We revisit the exciton mechanism of superconductivity in the framework of microcavity physics, replacing virtual excitons as a binding agent of Cooper pairs by excitations of an exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate. We consider a model microcavity where a quantum well with a two dimensional electron gas is sandwiched between two undoped quantum wells, where a polariton condensate is formed. We show that the critical temperature for superconductivity dramatically increases with the condensate population, opening a new route towards high temperature superconductivity.

Two-photon lasing by a single quantum dot in a high-Q microcavity

We investigate theoretically two-photon processes in a microcavity containing one quantum dot in the strong coupling regime. The cavity mode can be tuned to resonantly drive the two-photon transition between the ground and the biexciton states, while the exciton states are far-off resonance due to the biexciton binding energy. We study the steady state of the quantum dot and cavity field in presence of a continuous incoherent pumping. We identify the regime where the system acts as two-photon emitter and discuss the feasibility and performance of realistic single quantum dot devices for two-photon lasing.
