Sub-Laplacian generalized curvature dimension inequalities on Riemannian foliations

We develop a Bochner theory and Bakry-Emery calculus for horizontal Laplacians associated with general Riemannian foliations. No bundle-like assumption on the metric, nor any total geodesicity or minimality condition on the leaves is imposed. Using a metric connection adapted to the horizontal-vertical splitting, we derive explicit Bochner formulas for the horizontal Laplacian acting on horizontal and vertical gradients, as well as a unified identity for the full gradient. These formulas involve horizontal Ricci curvature, torsion and vertical mean curvature terms intrinsic to the foliated structure. From these identities, we establish generalized curvature dimension inequalities, extending earlier results in sub-Riemannian geometry. As applications, we obtain horizontal Laplacian comparison theorems, Bonnet-Myers type compactness results with explicit diameter bounds, stochastic completeness, first eigenvalue estimates and gradient and regularization estimates for the horizontal heat semigroup. The framework applies, in particular, to contact manifolds and Carnot groups of arbitrary step.

Parabolic Anderson model in bounded domains of recurrent metric measure spaces

A metric measure space equipped with a Dirichlet form is called recurrent if its Hausdorff dimension is less than its walk dimension. In bounded domains of such spaces we study the parabolic Anderson models \[ \partial_{t} u(t,x) = Δu(t,x) + βu(t,x) \, \dot{W}_α(t,x) \] where the noise $W_α$ is white in time and colored in space when $α>0$ while for $α=0$ it is also white in space. Both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions are considered. Besides proving existence and uniqueness in the Itô sense we also get precise $L^p$ estimates for the moments and intermittency properties of the solution as a consequence. Our study reveals new exponents which are intrinsically associated to the geometry of the underlying space and the results for instance apply in metric graphs or fractals like the Sierpiński gasket for which we prove scaling invariance properties of the models.

Besov class via heat semigroup on Dirichlet spaces III: BV functions and sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates

With a view toward fractal spaces, by using a Korevaar-Schoen space approach, we introduce the class of bounded variation (BV) functions in a general framework of strongly local Dirichlet spaces with a heat kernel satisfying sub-Gaussian estimates. Under a weak Bakry-Émery curvature type condition, which is new in this setting, this BV class is identified with a heat semigroup based Besov class. As a consequence of this identification, properties of BV functions and associated BV measures are studied in detail. In particular, we prove co-area formulas, global $L^1$ Sobolev embeddings and isoperimetric inequalities. It is shown that for nested fractals or their direct products the BV class we define is dense in $L^1$. The examples of the unbounded Vicsek set, unbounded Sierpinski gasket and unbounded Sierpinski carpet are discussed.

H-type foliations

With a view toward sub-Riemannian geometry, we introduce and study H-type foliations. These structures are natural generalizations of K-contact geometries which encompass as special cases K-contact manifolds, twistor spaces, 3K contact manifolds and H-type groups. Under an horizontal Ricci curvature lower bound, we prove on those structures sub-Riemannian diameter upper bounds and first eigenvalue estimates for the sub-Laplacian. Then, using a result by Moroianu-Semmelmann, we classify the H-type foliations that carry a parallel horizontal Clifford structure. Finally, we prove an horizontal Einstein property and compute the horizontal Ricci curvature of those spaces in codimension more than 2.

Parabolic Anderson model on Heisenberg groups: the Itô setting

In this note we focus our attention on a stochastic heat equation defined on the Heisenberg group $\mathbf{H}^{n}$ of order $n$. This equation is written as $\partial_t u=\frac{1}{2}Δu+u\dot{W}_α$, where $Δ$ is the hypoelliptic Laplacian on $\mathbf{H}^{n}$ and $\{\dot{W}_α; α>0\}$ is a family of Gaussian space-time noises which are white in time and have a covariance structure generated by $(-Δ)^{-α}$ in space. Our aim is threefold: (i) Give a proper description of the noise $W_α$; (ii) Prove that one can solve the stochastic heat equation in the Itô sense as soon as $α>\frac{n}{2}$; (iii) Give some basic moment estimates for the solution $u(t,x)$.

Besov class via heat semigroup on Dirichlet spaces I: Sobolev type inequalities

We introduce heat semigroup-based Besov classes in the general framework of Dirichlet spaces. General properties of those classes are studied and quantitative regularization estimates for the heat semigroup in this scale of spaces are obtained. As a highlight of the paper, we obtain a far reaching $L^p$-analogue, $p \ge 1$, of the Sobolev inequality that was proved for $p=2$ by N. Varopoulos under the assumption of ultracontractivity for the heat semigroup. The case $p=1$ is of special interest since it yields isoperimetric type inequalities.

Besov class via heat semigroup on Dirichlet spaces II: BV functions and Gaussian heat kernel estimates

We introduce the class of bounded variation (BV) functions in a general framework of strictly local Dirichlet spaces with doubling measure. Under the 2-Poincaré inequality and a weak Bakry-Émery curvature type condition, this BV class is identified with the heat semigroup based Besov class $\mathbf{B}^{1,1/2}(X)$ that was introduced in our previous paper. Assuming furthermore a quasi Bakry-Émery curvature type condition, we identify the Sobolev class $W^{1,p}(X)$ with $\mathbf{B}^{p,1/2}(X)$ for $p>1$. Consequences of those identifications in terms of isoperimetric and Sobolev inequalities with sharp exponents are given.

Fractional Gaussian fields on the Sierpinski gasket and related fractals

We define and study a fractional Gaussian field $X$ with Hurst parameter $H$ on the Sierpiński gasket $K$ equipped with its Hausdorff measure $μ$. It appears as a solution, in a weak sense, of the equation $(-Δ)^s X =W$ where $W$ is a Gaussian white noise on $L_0^2(K,μ)$, $Δ$ the Laplacian on $K$ and $s= \frac{d_h+2H}{2d_w}$, where $d_h$ is the Hausdorff dimension of $K$ and $d_w$ its walk dimension. The construction of those fields is then extended to other fractals including the Sierpiński carpet.

Gagliardo-Nirenberg, Trudinger-Moser and Morrey inequalities on Dirichlet spaces

With a view towards Riemannian or sub-Riemannian manifolds, RCD metric spaces and specially fractals, this paper makes a step further in the development of a theory of heat semigroup based $(1,p)$ Sobolev spaces in the general framework of Dirichlet spaces. Under suitable assumptions that are verified in a variety of settings, the tools developed by D. Bakry, T. Coulhon, M. Ledoux and L. Saloff-Coste in the paper "Sobolev inequalities in disguise" allow us to obtain the whole family of Gagliardo-Nirenberg and Trudinger-Moser inequalities with optimal exponents. The latter depend not only on the Hausdorff and walk dimensions of the space but also on other invariants. In addition, we prove Morrey type inequalities and apply them to study the infimum of the exponents that ensure continuity of Sobolev functions. The results are illustrated for fractals using the Vicsek set, whereas several conjectures are made for nested fractals and the Sierpinski carpet.

Radial processes for sub-Riemannian Brownian motions and applications

We study the radial part of sub-Riemannian Brownian motion in the context of totally geodesic foliations. Itô's formula is proved for the radial processes associated to Riemannian distances approximating the Riemannian one. We deduce very general stochastic completeness criteria for the sub-Riemannian Brownian motion. In the context of Sasakian foliations and H-type groups, one can push the analysis further, and taking advantage of the recently proved sub-Laplacian comparison theorems one can compare the radial processes for the sub-Riemannian distance to one-dimensional model diffusions. As a geometric application, we prove Cheng's type estimates for the Dirichlet eigenvalues of the sub-Riemannian metric balls, a result which seems to be new even in the Heisenberg group.

The subelliptic heat kernel of the octonionic Hopf fibration

We study the sub-Laplacian of the $15$-dimensional unit sphere which is obtained by lifting with respect to the Hopf fibration the Laplacian of the octonionic projective space. We obtain in particular explicit formulas for its heat kernel and deduce an expression for the Green function of a related sub-Laplacian. As a byproduct we also obtain the spectrum of the sub-Laplacian, the small-time asymptotics of the heat kernel and explicitly compute the sub-Riemannian distance.

Hypocoercive estimates on foliations and velocity spherical Brownian motion

By further developing the generalized $Γ$-calculus for hypoelliptic operators, we prove hypocoercive estimates for a large class of Kolmogorov type operators which are defined on non necessarily totally geodesic Riemannian foliations. We study then in detail the example of the velocity spherical Brownian motion, whose generator is a step-3 generating hypoelliptic Hörmander's type operator. To prove hypocoercivity in that case, the key point is to show the existence of a convenient Riemannian foliation associated to the diffusion. We will then deduce, under suitable geometric conditions, the convergence to equilibrium of the diffusion in $H^1$ and in $L^2$.

Stochastic areas, Winding numbers and Hopf fibrations

We define and study stochastic areas processes associated with Brownian motions on the complex symmetric spaces $\mathbb{CP}^n$ and $\mathbb{CH}^n$. The characteristic functions of those processes are computed and limit theorems are obtained. In the case $n=1$, we also study windings of the Brownian motion on those spaces and compute the limit distributions. For $\mathbb{CP}^n$ the geometry of the Hopf fibration plays a central role, whereas for $\mathbb{CH}^n$ it is the anti-de Sitter fibration.

Wasserstein contraction properties for hypoelliptic diffusions

Gradient bounds had proved to be a very efficient tool for the control of the rate of convergence to equilibrium for parabolic evolution equations. Among the gradient bounds methods, the celebrated Bakry-Émery criterion is a powerful way prove to convergence to equilibrium with an exponential rate. To be satisfied, this criterion requires some form of ellipticity of the diffusion operator. In the past few years, there have been several works extending the Bakry-Émery methodology to hypoelliptic operators. Inspired by these methods, we describe a rather simple generalization of the criterion that applies to a large class of hypoelliptic/hypocoercive operators. We are particularly interested in convergence to equilibrium in the Wasserstein distance and obtain several new results in that direction.

Log-Sobolev inequalities on the horizontal path space of a totally geodesic foliation

We develop a Malliavin calculus on the horizontal path space of a totally geodesic Riemannian foliation. As a first application, under suitable assumptions, we prove a log-Sobolev inequality for a natural one-parameter family of infinite-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type operators. As a second application, we obtain concentration and tail estimates for the horizontal Brownian motion of the foliation.

The subelliptic heat kernels of the quaternionic Hopf fibration

The main goal of this work is to study the sub-Laplacian of the unit sphere which is obtained by lifting with respect to the Hopf fibration the Laplacian of the quaternionic projective space. We obtain in particular explicit formulas for its heat kernel and deduce an expression for the Green function of the conformal sub-Laplacian and small-time asymptotics. As a byproduct of our study we also obtain several results related to the sub-Laplacian of a projected Hopf fibration.

Transverse Weitzenböck formulas and curvature dimension inequalities on Riemannian foliations with totally geodesic leaves

We prove a family of new Weitzenböck formulas on a Riemannian foliation with totally geodesic leaves. These Weitzenböck formulas are naturally parametrized by the canonical variation of the metric. As a consequence, under natural geometric conditions, the horizontal Laplacian satisfies a generalized curvature dimension inequality. Among other things, this curvature dimension inequality implies Li-Yau estimates for positive solutions of the horizontal heat equation and a sub-Riemannian Bonnet-Myers compactness theorem whose assumptions only rely on the intrinsic geometry of the horizontal distribution.

A sub-Riemannian curvature-dimension inequality, volume doubling property and the Poincaré inequality

Let $\mathbb{M}$ be a smooth connected manifold endowed with a smooth measure $μ$ and a smooth locally subelliptic diffusion operator $L$ satisfying $L1=0$, and which is symmetric with respect to $μ$. We show that if $L$ satisfies, with a non negative curvature parameter, the generalized curvature inequality introduced by the first and third named authors in \cite{BG}, then the following properties hold: 1 The volume doubling property; 2 The Poincaré inequality; 3 The parabolic Harnack inequality. The key ingredient is the study of dimensional reverse log-Sobolev inequalities for the heat semigroup and corresponding non-linear reverse Harnack type inequalities. Our results apply in particular to all Sasakian manifolds whose horizontal Webster-Tanaka-Ricci curvature is non negative, all Carnot groups with step two, and to wide subclasses of principal bundles over Riemannian manifolds whose Ricci curvature is non negative.

Curvature-dimension estimates for the Laplace-Beltrami operator of a totally geodesic foliation

We study Bakry-Emery type estimates for the Laplace-Beltrami operator of a totally geodesic foliation. In particular, we are interested in situations for which the $Γ_2$ operator may not be bounded from below but the horizontal Bakry-Emery curvature is. As we prove it, under a bracket generating condition, this weaker condition is enough to imply several functional inequalities for the heat semigroup including the Wang-Harnack inequality and the log-Sobolev inequality. We also prove that, under proper additional assumptions, the generalized curvature dimension inequality introduced by Baudoin-Garofalo is uniformly satisfied for a family of Riemannian metrics that converge to the sub-Riemannian one.

Curvature-dimension inequalities and Ricci lower bounds for sub-Riemannian manifolds with transverse symmetries

Let $\M$ be a smooth connected manifold endowed with a smooth measure $μ$ and a smooth locally subelliptic diffusion operator $L$ satisfying $L1=0$, and which is symmetric with respect to $μ$. Associated with $L$ one has \textit{le carré du champ} $Γ$ and a canonical distance $d$, with respect to which we suppose that $(M,d)$ be complete. We assume that $\M$ is also equipped with another first-order differential bilinear form $Γ^Z$ and we assume that $Γ$ and $Γ^Z$ satisfy the Hypothesis below. With these forms we introduce in \eqref{cdi} below a generalization of the curvature-dimension inequality from Riemannian geometry, see Definition \ref{D:cdi}. In our main results we prove that, using solely \eqref{cdi}, one can develop a theory which parallels the celebrated works of Yau, and Li-Yau on complete manifolds with Ricci bounded from below. We also obtain an analogue of the Bonnet-Myers theorem. In Section \ref{S:appendix} we construct large classes of sub-Riemannian manifolds with transverse symmetries which satisfy the generalized curvature-dimension inequality \eqref{cdi}. Such classes include all Sasakian manifolds whose horizontal Webster-Tanaka-Ricci curvature is bounded from below, all Carnot groups with step two, and wide subclasses of principal bundles over Riemannian manifolds whose Ricci curvature is bounded from below.

On probability laws of solutions to differential systems driven by a fractional Brownian motion

This article investigates several properties related to densities of solutions X to differential equations driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H>1/4. We first determine conditions for strict positivity of the density of X_t. Then we obtain some exponential bounds for this density when the diffusion coefficient satisfies an elliptic type condition. Finally, still in the elliptic case, we derive some bounds on the hitting probabilities of sets by fractional differential systems in terms of Newtonian capacities.

Stochastic analysis on sub-Riemannian manifolds with transverse symmetries

We prove a geometrically meaningful stochastic representation of the derivative of the heat semigroup on sub-Riemannian manifolds with tranverse symmetries. This representation is obtained from the study of Bochner-Weitzenbock type formulas for sub-Laplacians on 1-forms. As a consequence, we prove new hypoelliptic heat semigroup gradient bounds under natural global geometric conditions. The results are new even in the case of the Heisenberg group which is the simplest example of a sub-Riemannian manifold with transverse symmetries.

Volume and distance comparison theorems for sub-Riemannian manifolds

In this paper we study global distance estimates and uniform local volume estimates in a large class of sub-Riemannian manifolds. Our main device is the generalized curvature dimension inequality introduced by the first and the third author in \cite{BG1} and its use to obtain sharp inequalities for solutions of the sub-Riemannian heat equation. As a consequence, we obtain a Gromov type precompactness theorem for the class of sub-Riemannian manifolds whose generalized Ricci curvature is bounded from below in the sense of \cite{BG1}.

Curvature dimension inequalities and subelliptic heat kernel gradient bounds on contact manifolds

We study curvature dimension inequalities for the sub-Laplacian on contact Riemannian manifolds. This new curvature dimension condition is then used to obtain: 1) Geometric conditions ensuring the compactness of the underlying manifold (Bonnet-Myers type results); 2) Volume estimates of metric balls; 3) Gradient bounds and stochastic completeness for the heat semigroup generated by the sub-Laplacian; 4) Spectral gap estimates.

Smoothing effect of rough differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motions

In this work we study the smoothing effect of rough differential equations driven by a fractional Brownian motion with parameter $H>1/4$. The regularization estimates we obtain generalize to the fractional Brownian motion previous results by Kusuoka and Stroock and can be seen as a quantitative version of the existence of smooth densities under Hörmander's type conditions.

Sobolev, Poincare and isoperimetric inequalities for subelliptic diffusion operators satisfying a generalized curvature dimension inequality

By adapting some ideas of M. Ledoux \cite{ledoux2}, \cite{ledoux-stflour} and \cite{Led} to a sub-Riemannian framework we study Sobolev, Poincaré and isoperimetric inequalities associated to subelliptic diffusion operators that satisfy the generalized curvature dimension inequality that was introduced by F. Baudoin and N. Garofalo in \cite{Bau2}. Our results apply in particular on all CR Sasakian manifolds whose horizontal Webster-Tanaka-Ricci curvature is non negative, all Carnot groups with step two, and wide subclasses of principal bundles over Riemannian manifolds whose Ricci curvature is non negative.

The subelliptic heat kernel on the three dimensional solvable Lie groups

We study the subelliptic heat kernels of the CR three dimensional solvable Lie groups. We first classify all left-invariant sub-Riemannian structures on three dimensional solvable Lie groups and obtain representations of these groups. We give expressions for the heat kernels on these groups and obtain heat semigroup gradient bounds using a new type of curvature-dimension inequality.

Log-Sobolev inequalities for subelliptic operators satisfying a generalized curvature dimension inequality

Let $\M$ be a smooth connected manifold endowed with a smooth measure $μ$ and a smooth locally subelliptic diffusion operator $L$ which is symmetric with respect to $μ$. We assume that $L$ satisfies a generalized curvature dimension inequality as introduced by Baudoin-Garofalo \cite{BG1}. Our goal is to discuss functional inequalities for $μ$ like the Poincaré inequality, the log-Sobolev inequality or the Gaussian logarithmic isoperimetric inequality.

Quasi-invariance for heat kernel measures on sub-Riemannian infinite-dimensional Heisenberg groups

We study heat kernel measures on sub-Riemannian infinite-dimensional Heisenberg-like Lie groups. In particular, we show that Cameron-Martin type quasi-invariance results hold in this subelliptic setting and give $L^p$-estimates for the Radon-Nikodym derivatives. The main ingredient in our proof is a generalized curvature-dimension estimate which holds on approximating finite-dimensional projection groups. Such estimates were first introduced by Baudoin and Garofalo in \cite{BaudoinGarofalo2011}.

Taylor expansion for the solution of a stochastic differential equation driven by fractional Brownian motions

We study the Taylor expansion for the solution of a differential equation driven by a multidimensional Holder path with exponent β> 1/2. We derive a convergence criterion that enables us to write the solution as an infinite sum of iterated integrals on a nonempty interval. We apply our deterministic results to stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motions with Hurst parameter H > 1\2. We also prove that by using L_2 estimates of iterated integrals, the criterion and the speed of convergence for the stochastic Taylor expansion can be improved using Borel-Cantelli type arguments when H\in (1/2, 3/4).

The Subelliptic Heat Kernel on the CR sphere

We study the heat kernel of the sub-Laplacian L on the CR sphere S2n+1. An explicit and geometrically meaningful formula for the heat kernel is obtained. As a by-product we recover in a simple way the Green function of the conformal sub- Laplacian -L + n2 that was obtained by Geller [12], and also get an explicit formula for the sub-Riemannian distance. The key point is to work in a set of coordinates that reflects the symmetries coming from the fibration S2n+1 \rightarrow CPn.

Upper bounds for the density of solutions of stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motions

In this paper we study upper bounds for the density of solution of stochastic differential equations driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H > 1/3. We show that under some geometric conditions, in the regular case H > 1/2, the density of the solution satisfy the log-Sobolev inequality, the Gaussian concentration inequality and admits an upper Gaussian bound. In the rough case H > 1/3 and under the same geometric conditions, we show that the density of the solution is smooth and admits an upper sub-Gaussian bound.

Exponential functionals of Brownian motion and class-one Whittaker functions

We consider exponential functionals of a multi-dimensional Brownian motion with drift, defined via a collection of linear functionals. We give a characterization of the Laplace transform of their joint law as the unique bounded solution, up to a constant factor, to a Schrodinger-type partial differential equation. We derive a similar equation for the probability density. We then characterize all diffusion processes which can be interpreted as having the law of the Brownian motion with drift conditioned on the law of its exponential functionals. In the case where the family of linear functionals is a set of simple roots, the Laplace transform of the joint law of the corresponding exponential functionals can be expressed in terms of a (class-one) Whittaker function associated with the corresponding root system. In this setting, we establish some basic properties of the corresponding diffusion processes.
