Robust spin squeezing from the tower of states of $U(1)$-symmetric spin Hamiltonians

Spin squeezing - a central resource for quantum metrology - can be generated via the non-linear, entangling evolution of an initially factorized spin state. Here we show that robust (i.e. persistent) squeezing dynamics is generated by a very large class of $S=1/2$ spin Hamiltonians with axial symmetry, in relationship with the existence of a peculiar structure of the low-lying Hamiltonian eigenstates - the so-called Anderson's tower of states. Such states are fundamentally related to the appearance of spontaneous symmetry breaking in quantum systems; and, for models with sufficiently high connectivity, they are parametrically close to the eigenstates of a planar rotor (Dicke states), in that they feature an anomalously large value of the total angular momentum. Our central insight is that, starting from a coherent spin state, a generic $U(1)$-symmetric Hamiltonian featuring the Anderson's tower of states generates the same squeezing evolution at short times as the one governed by the paradigmatic one-axis-twisting (or planar-rotor) model of squeezing dynamics. The full squeezing evolution of the planar-rotor model is seemingly reproduced for interactions decaying with distance $r$ as $r^{-α}$ when $α< 5d/3$ in $d$ dimensions. Our results connect quantum simulation with quantum metrology by unveiling the squeezing power of a large variety of Hamiltonian dynamics that are currently implemented by different quantum simulation platforms.

Nonequilibrium scenarios in cluster-forming quantum lattice models

We investigate the out-of-equilibrium physics of monodisperse bosonic ensembles on a square lattice. The effective Hamiltonian description of these systems is given in terms of an extended Hubbard model with cluster-forming interactions relevant to experimental realizations with cold Rydberg-dressed atoms. The ground state of the model, recently investigated in Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 045301 (2019), features, aside from a superfluid and a stripe crystalline phase occurring at small and large interaction strength $V$, respectively, a rare first-order transition between an isotropic and an anisotropic stripe supersolid at intermediate $V$. By means of quantum Monte Carlo calculations we show that the equilibrium crystal may be turned into a glass by simulated temperature quenches and that out-of-equilibrium isotropic (super)solid states may emerge also when their equilibrium counterparts are anisotropic. These out-of-equilibrium states are of experimental interest, their excess energy with respect to the ground state being within the energy window typically accessed in cold atom experiments. We find, after quenching, no evidence of coexistence between superfluid and glassy behavior. Such an absence of superglassiness is qualitatively explained.

Superglass phase of interaction-blockaded gases on a triangular lattice

We investigate the quantum phases of monodispersed bosonic gases confined to a triangular lattice and interacting via a class of soft-shoulder potentials. The latter correspond to soft-core potentials with an additional hard-core onsite interaction. Using exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the low temperature phases for weak and strong interactions following a temperature quench are a homogeneous superfluid and a glass, respectively. The latter is an insulating phase characterized by inhomogeneity in the density distribution and structural disorder. Remarkably, we find that for intermediate interaction strengths a {\it superglass} occurs in an extended region of the phase diagram, where glassy behavior coexists with a sizable finite superfluid fraction. This glass phase is obtained in the absence of geometrical frustration or external disorder and is a result of the competition of quantum fluctuations and cluster formation in the corresponding classical ground state. For high enough temperature, the glass and superglass turn into a floating stripe solid and a supersolid, respectively. Given the simplicity and generality of the model, these phases should be directly relevant for state-of-the-art experiments with Rydberg-dressed atoms in optical lattices.

Two holes in a two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet: A variational study based on entangled-plaquette states

We show that the entangled-plaquette variational ansatz can be adapted to study the two-dimensional $t-J$ model in the presence of two mobile holes. Specifically, we focus on a square lattice comprising up to $N=256$ sites in the parameter range $0.4\leq J/ t\leq2.0$. Ground state energies are obtained via the optimization of a wave function in which the weight of a given configuration is expressed in terms of variational coefficients associated with square and linear entangled plaquettes. Our estimates are in excellent agreement with exact results available for the $N=16$ lattice. By extending our study to considerably larger systems we find, based on the analysis of the long distance tail of the probability of finding two holes at spatial separation $r$, and on our computed two-hole binding energies, the existence of a two-hole bound state for all the values of $J/t$ explored here. It is estimated that d-wave binding of the two holes does not occur for $J/t<J_c/t\simeq 0.19$.

Monodisperse cluster crystals: classical and quantum dynamics

We study the phases and dynamics of a gas of monodisperse particles interacting via soft-core potentials in two spatial dimensions, which is of interest for soft-matter colloidal systems and quantum atomic gases. Using exact theoretical methods, we demonstrate that the equilibrium low-temperature classical phase simultaneously breaks continuous translational symmetry and dynamic space-time homogeneity, whose absence is usually associated with out-of-equilibrium glassy phenomena. This results in an exotic self-assembled cluster crystal with coexisting liquid-like long-time dynamical properties, which corresponds to a classical analog of supersolid behavior. We demonstrate that the effects of quantum fluctuations and bosonic statistics on cluster-glassy crystals are separate and competing: zero-point motion tends to destabilize crystalline order, which can be restored by bosonic statistics.

Ground-state phase diagram of the quantum $J_1-J_2$ model on the square lattice

We study the ground-state phase diagram of the quantum $J_1-J_2$ model on the square lattice by means of an entangled-plaquette variational ansatz. In the range $0\le {J_2}/{J_1} \le 1$, we find classical magnetic order of Néel and collinear type, for ${J_2}/{J_1}\lesssim 0.5$, and $J_2/J_1 \gtrsim 0.6$ respectively. For intermediate values of $J_2/J_1$ the ground state is a spin liquid (i.e., paramagnetic with no valence bond crystalline order). Our estimates of the entanglement entropy show that such a spin liquid is topological.

Ground-state phase diagram of the quantum J1-J2 model on the honeycomb lattice

We study the ground-state phase diagram of the quantum $J_1-J_2$ model on the honeycomb lattice by means of an entangled-plaquette variational ansatz. Values of energy and relevant order parameters are computed in the range $0\le {J_2}/{J_1} \le 1$. The system displays classical order for ${J_2}/{J_1}\lesssim 0.2$ (Néel), and for $J_2/J_1 \gtrsim 0.4$ (collinear). In the intermediate region, the ground-state is disordered. Our results show that the reduction of the half-filled Hubbard model to the model studied here does not yield accurate predictions.

On the possible "supersolid" character of parahydrogen clusters

We present results of a theoretical study of structural and superfluid properties of parahydrogen clusters comprising 25, 26 and 27 molecules at low temperature. The microscopic model utilized here is based on the Silvera-Goldman pair potential. Numerical results are obtained by means of Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, making use of the continuous-space Worm Algorithm. The clusters are superfluid in the low temperature limit, but display markedly different physical behaviours. For N=25 and 27, superfluidity at low temperature arises as clusters melt, i.e., become progressively liquid-like as a result of quantum effects. On the other hand, for N = 26 the cluster remains rigid and solid-like. We argue that this cluster can be regarded as a mesoscopic "supersolid". This physical picture is supported by results of simulations in which a single parahydrogen molecule in the cluster is isotopically substituted.

Variational study of a mobile hole in a two dimensional quantum antiferromagnet using entangled-plaquette states

We study the properties of a mobile hole in the $t-J$ model on the square lattice by means of variational Monte Carlo simulations based on the entangled-plaquette ansatz. Our energy estimates for small lattices reproduce available exact results. We obtain values for the hole energy dispersion curve on large lattices in quantitative agreement with earlier findings based on the most reliable numerical techniques. Accurate estimates of the hole spectral weight are provided.

Ground-state properties of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice: A variational study based on entangled-plaquette states

We study, on the basis of the general entangled-plaquette variational ansatz, the ground-state properties of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice. Our numerical estimates are in good agreement with available exact results and comparable, for large system sizes, to those computed via the best alternative numerical approaches, or by means of variational schemes based on specific (i.e., incorporating problem dependent terms) trial wave functions. The extrapolation to the thermodynamic limit of our results for lattices comprising up to N=324 spins yields an upper bound of the ground-state energy per site (in units of the exchange coupling) of $-0.5458(2)$ [$-0.4074(1)$ for the XX model], while the estimated infinite-lattice order parameter is $0.3178(5)$ (i.e., approximately 64% of the classical value).

Ground-State Properties of Quantum Many-Body Systems: Entangled-Plaquette States and Variational Monte Carlo

We propose a new ansatz for the ground-state wave function of quantum many-body systems on a lattice. The key idea is to cover the lattice with plaquettes and obtain a state whose configurational weights can be optimized by means of a Variational Monte Carlo algorithm. Such a scheme applies to any dimension, without any "sign" instability. We show results for various two dimensional spin models (including frustrated ones). A detailed comparison with available exact results, as well as with variational methods based on different ansatzs is offered. In particular, our numerical estimates are in quite good agreement with exact ones for unfrustrated systems, and compare favorably to other methods for frustrated ones.
