Existence results for fully nonlinear equations in radial domains

We consider the fully nonlinear problem \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -F(x,D^2u)=|u|^{p-1}u & \text{in ΩΩ}\\ u=0 & \text{on ∂Ω\partialΩ} \end{cases} \end{equation*} where FF is uniformly elliptic, p>1p>1 and ΩΩ is either an annulus or a ball in $\Rn$, n≥2n\geq2. \\ We prove the following results: \begin{itemize} \item[i)] existence of a positive/negative radial solution for every exponent p>1p>1, if ΩΩ is an annulus; \item[ii)] existence of infinitely many sign changing radial solutions for every p>1p>1, characterized by the number of nodal regions, if ΩΩ is an annulus; \item[iii)] existence of infinitely many sign changing radial solutions characterized by the number of nodal regions, if FF is one of the Pucci's operator, ΩΩ is a ball and pp is subcritical.

Symmetry and spectral properties for viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear equations

We study symmetry properties of viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations. We show that if uu is a viscosity solution of a rotationally invariant equation of the form F(x,D2u)+f(x,u)=0F(x,D^2u)+f(x,u)=0, then the operator Lu=M++∂f∂u(x,u)\mathcal{L}_u=\mathcal{M}^++\frac{\partial f}{\partial u}(x,u), where M+\mathcal{M}^+ is the Pucci's sup--operator, plays the role of the linearized operator at uu. In particular, we prove that if uu is a solution in a radial bounded domain, if ff is convex in uu and if the principal eigenvalue of Lu\mathcal{L}_u (associated with positive eigenfunctions) in any half domain is nonnegative, then uu is foliated Schwarz symmetric. We apply our symmetry results to obtain bounds on the spectrum and to deduce properties of possible nodal eigenfunctions for the operator M+\mathcal{M}^+.

Explicit subsolutions and a Liouville theorem for fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic inequalities in halfspaces

We prove a Liouville type theorem for arbitrarily growing positive viscosity supersolutions of fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations in halfspaces. Precisely, let Mλ,Λ−M^-_{λ, Λ} be the Pucci's inf- operator, defined as the infimum of all linear uniformly elliptic operators with ellipticity constants Λ≥λ>0Λ\geq λ>0. Then, we prove that the inequality Mλ,Λ−(D2u)+up≤0M^-_{λ, Λ}(D^2u) +u^p \leq 0 does not have any positive viscosity solution in a halfspace provided that −1≤p≤(Λ/λn+1)/(Λ/λn−1)-1\leq p \leq (Λ/λn+1)/(Λ/λn-1), whereas positive solutions do exist if either p<−1p < -1 or p>(Λ/λ(n−1)+2)/(Λ/λ(n−1))p > (Λ/λ(n-1)+2)/(Λ/λ(n-1)). This will be accomplished by constructing explicit subsolutions of the homogeneous equation Mλ,Λ−(D2u)=0M^-_{λ, Λ}(D^2u)=0 and by proving a nonlinear version in a halfspace of the classical Hadamard three-circles Theorem for entire superharmonic functions.
