The Deep and Transient Universe in the SVOM Era: New Challenges and Opportunities - Scientific prospects of the SVOM mission

To take advantage of the astrophysical potential of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), Chinese and French astrophysicists have engaged the SVOM mission (Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor). Major advances in GRB studies resulting from the synergy between space and ground observations, the SVOM mission implements space and ground instrumentation. The scientific objectives of the mission put a special emphasis on two categories of GRBs: very distant GRBs at z$>$5 which constitute exceptional cosmological probes, and faint/soft nearby GRBs which allow probing the nature of the progenitors and the physics at work in the explosion. These goals have a major impact on the design of the mission: the on-board hard X-ray imager is sensitive down to 4 keV and computes on line image and rate triggers, and the follow-up telescopes on the ground are sensitive in the NIR. At the beginning of the next decade, SVOM will be the main provider of GRB positions and spectral parameters on very short time scale. The SVOM instruments will operate simultaneously with a wide range of powerful astronomical devices. This rare instrumental conjunction, combined with the relevance of the scientific topics connected with GRB studies, warrants a remarkable scientific return for SVOM. In addition, the SVOM instrumentation, primarily designed for GRB studies, composes a unique multi-wavelength observatory with rapid slew capability that will find multiple applications for the whole astronomy community beyond the specific objectives linked to GRBs. This report lists the scientific themes that will benefit from observations made with SVOM, whether they are specific GRB topics, or more generally all the issues that can take advantage of the multi-wavelength capabilities of SVOM.

Functional SPDE with Multiplicative Noise and Dini Drift

Existence, uniqueness and non-explosion of the mild solution are proved for a class of semi-linear functional SPDEs with multiplicative noise and Dini continuous drifts. In the finite-dimensional and bounded time delay setting, the log-Harnack inequality and $L^2$-gradient estimate are derived. As the Markov semigroup is associated to the functional (segment) solution of the equation, one needs to make analysis on the path space of the solution in the time interval of delay.

Poincaré Inequality for Dirichlet Distributions and Infinite-Dimensional Generalizations

For any $N\ge 2$ and $å:=(å_1,\cdots, å_{N+1})\in (0,\infty)^{N+1}$, let $μ^{(N)}_å$ be the corresponding Dirichlet distribution on $\DD:= \big\{ x=(x_i)_{1\le i\le N}\in [0,1]^N:\ \sum_{1\le i\le N} x_i\le 1\big\}.$ We prove the Poincaré inequality $$μ^{(N)}_å(f^2)\le \ff 1 {å_{N+1}} \int_{\DD}\Big\{\Big(1-\sum_{1\le i\le N} x_i\Big) \sum_{n=1}^N x_n(\pp_n f)^2\Big\}μ^{(N)}_å(\d x)+μ^{(N)}_å(f)^2,\ f\in C^1(\DD)$$ and show that the constant $\ff 1 {å_{N+1}}$ is sharp. Consequently, the associated diffusion process on $\DD$ converges to $μ^{(N)}_å$ in $L^2(μ^{(N)}_å)$ at the exponentially rate $å_{N+1}$. The whole spectrum of the generator is also characterized. Moreover, the sharp Poincaré inequality is extended to the infinite-dimensional setting, and the spectral gap of the corresponding discrete model is derived.

Delocalization-enhanced Bloch oscillations and driven resonant tunneling in optical lattices for precision force measurements

In this paper we describe and compare different methods used for accurate determination of forces acting on matter-wave packets in optical lattices. The quantum interference nature responsible for the production of both Bloch oscillations and coherent delocalization is investigated in detail. We study conditions for optimal detection of Bloch oscillation for a thermal ensemble of cold atoms with a large velocity spread. We report on the experimental observation of resonant tunneling in an amplitude-modulated (AM) optical lattice up to the sixth harmonic with Fourier-limited linewidth. We then explore the fundamental and technical phenomena which limit both the sensitivity and the final accuracy of the atomic force sensor at 10^{-7} precision level [1], with an analysis of the coherence time of the system and addressing few simple setup changes to go beyond the current accuracy.

A Burgers-KPZ Type Parabolic Equation \par\noindent for the Path-Independence of the Density of the Girsanov Transformation

Let $X_t$ solve the multidimensional Itô's stochastic differential equations on $\R^d$ $$dX_t=b(t,X_t)dt+σ(t,X_t)dB_t$$ where $b:[0,\infty)\times\R^d\to\R^d$ is smooth in its two arguments, $σ:[0,\infty)\times\R^d\to\R^d\otimes\R^d$ is smooth with $σ(t,x)$ being invertible for all $(t,x)\in[0,\infty)\times\R^d$, $B_t$ is $d$-dimensional Brownian motion. It is shown that, associated to a Girsanov transformation, the stochastic process $$\int^t_0\langle(σ^{-1}b)(s,X_s),dB_t\rangle+\frac{1}{2}\int^t_0|σ^{-1}b|^2(s,X_s)ds$$ is a function of the arguments $t$ and $X_t$ (i.e., path-independent) if and only if $b=σσ^\ast\nabla v$ for some scalar function $v:[0,\infty)\times\R^d\to\R$ satisfying the time-reversed KPZ type equation $$\frac{\partial}{\partial t}v(t,x)=-\frac{1}{2}\left[\left(Tr(σσ^\ast\nabla^2v)\right)(t,x) +|σ^\ast\nabla v|^2(t,x)\right].$$ The assertion also holds on a connected complete differential manifold.

Precision measurement of gravity with cold atoms in an optical lattice and comparison with a classical gravimeter

We report on a high precision measurement of gravitational acceleration using ultracold strontium atoms trapped in a vertical optical lattice. Using amplitude modulation of the lattice intensity, an uncertainty $Δg /g \approx 10^{-7}$ was reached by measuring at the 5$^{th}$ harmonic of the Bloch oscillation frequency. After a careful analysis of systematic effects, the value obtained with this microscopic quantum system is consistent with the one we measured with a classical absolute gravimeter at the same location. This result is of relevance for the recent interpretation of related experiments as tests of gravitational redshift and opens the way to new tests of gravity at micrometer scale.
