Reconstruction of atmospheric neutrinos in DUNE's horizontal-drift far-detector module

This paper reports on the capabilities in reconstructing and identifying atmospheric neutrino interactions in one of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment's (DUNE) far detector modules, a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) with horizontal drift (FD-HD) of ionization electrons. The reconstruction is based upon the workflow developed for DUNE's long-baseline oscillation analysis, with some necessary machine-learning models' retraining and the addition of features relevant only to atmospheric neutrinos such as the neutrino direction reconstruction. Where relevant, the impact of the detection of the charged particles of the hadronic system is emphasized, and comparisons are carried out between the case when lepton-only information is considered in the reconstruction (as is the case for many neutrino oscillation experiments), versus when all particles identified in the LArTPC were included. Three neutrino direction reconstruction methods have been developed and studied for the atmospheric analyses: using lepton-only information, using all reconstructed particles, and using only correlations from reconstructed hits. The results indicate that incorporating more than just lepton information significantly improves the resolution of both neutrino direction and energy reconstruction. The angle reconstruction algorithms developed in this work result in no strong dependence on particle direction for reconstruction efficiencies or neutrino flavor identification. This comprehensive review of the reconstruction of atmospheric neutrinos in DUNE's FD-HD LArTPC is the first step towards developing a first neutrino oscillation sensitivity analysis, which will ready DUNE for its first measurements.

A New Charged Lepton Flavor Violation Program at Fermilab

The muon has played a central role in establishing the Standard Model of particle physics, and continues to provide valuable information about the nature of new physics. A new complex at Fermilab, the Advanced Muon Facility, would provide the world's most intense positive and negative muon beams by exploiting the full potential of PIP-II and the Booster upgrade. This facility would enable a broad muon physics program, including studies of charged lepton flavor violation, muonium-antimuonium transitions, a storage ring muon EDM experiment, and muon spin rotation experiments. This document describes a staged realization of this complex, together with a series of next-generation experiments to search for charged lepton flavor violation.

Mu2e-II: Muon to electron conversion with PIP-II

An observation of Charged Lepton Flavor Violation (CLFV) would be unambiguous evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. The Mu2e and COMET experiments, under construction, are designed to push the sensitivity to CLFV in the mu to e conversion process to unprecedented levels. Whether conversion is observed or not, there is a strong case to be made for further improving sensitivity, or for examining the process on additional target materials. Mu2e-II is a proposed upgrade to Mu2e, with at least an additional order of magnitude in sensitivity to the conversion rate over Mu2e. The approach and challenges for this proposal are summarized. Mu2e-II may be regarded as the next logical step in a continued high-intensity muon program at FNAL.

Progress report on the Large Scale Polarization Explorer

The Large Scale Polarization Explorer (LSPE) is a cosmology program for the measurement of large scale curl-like features (B-modes) in the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background. Its goal is to constrain the background of inflationary gravity waves traveling through the universe at the time of matter-radiation decoupling. The two instruments of LSPE are meant to synergically operate by covering a large portion of the northern microwave sky. LSPE/STRIP is a coherent array of receivers planned to be operated from the Teide Observatory in Tenerife, for the control and characterization of the low-frequency polarized signals of galactic origin; LSPE/SWIPE is a balloon-borne bolometric polarimeter based on 330 large throughput multi-moded detectors, designed to measure the CMB polarization at 150 GHz and to monitor the polarized emission by galactic dust above 200 GHz. The combined performance and the expected level of systematics mitigation will allow LSPE to constrain primordial B-modes down to a tensor/scalar ratio of $10^{-2}$. We here report the status of the STRIP pre-commissioning phase and the progress in the characterization of the key subsystems of the SWIPE payload (namely the cryogenic polarization modulation unit and the multi-moded TES pixels) prior to receiver integration.

Design and status of the Mu2e electromagnetic calorimeter

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab aims at measuring the neutrinoless conversion of a negative muon into an electron and reach a single event sensitivity of 2.5x10^{-17} after three years of data taking. The monoenergetic electron produced in the final state, is detected by a high precision tracker and a crystal calorimeter, all embedded in a large superconducting solenoid (SD) surrounded by a cosmic ray veto system. The calorimeter is complementary to the tracker, allowing an independent trigger and powerful particle identification, while seeding the track reconstruction and contributing to remove background tracks mimicking the signal. In order to match these requirements, the calorimeter should have an energy resolution of O(5)% and a time resolution better than 500 ps at 100 MeV. The baseline solution is a calorimeter composed of two disks of BaF2 crystals read by UV extended, solar blind, Avalanche Photodiode (APDs), which are under development from a JPL, Caltech, RMD consortium. In this paper, the calorimeter design, the R&D studies carried out so far and the status of engineering are described. A backup alternative setup consisting of a pure CsI crystal matrix read by UV extended Hamamatsu MPPC's is also presented.

Mu2e Technical Design Report

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will search for charged lepton flavor violation via the coherent conversion process mu- N --> e- N with a sensitivity approximately four orders of magnitude better than the current world's best limits for this process. The experiment's sensitivity offers discovery potential over a wide array of new physics models and probes mass scales well beyond the reach of the LHC. We describe herein the preliminary design of the proposed Mu2e experiment. This document was created in partial fulfillment of the requirements necessary to obtain DOE CD-2 approval.

Simulation and performance of an artificial retina for 40 MHz track reconstruction

We present the results of a detailed simulation of the artificial retina pattern-recognition algorithm, designed to reconstruct events with hundreds of charged-particle tracks in pixel and silicon detectors at LHCb with LHC crossing frequency of $40\,\rm MHz$. Performances of the artificial retina algorithm are assessed using the official Monte Carlo samples of the LHCb experiment. We found performances for the retina pattern-recognition algorithm comparable with the full LHCb reconstruction algorithm.

A Specialized Processor for Track Reconstruction at the LHC Crossing Rate

We present the results of an R&D study of a specialized processor capable of precisely reconstructing events with hundreds of charged-particle tracks in pixel detectors at 40 MHz, thus suitable for processing LHC events at the full crossing frequency. For this purpose we design and test a massively parallel pattern-recognition algorithm, inspired by studies of the processing of visual images by the brain as it happens in nature. We find that high-quality tracking in large detectors is possible with sub-$μ$s latencies when this algorithm is implemented in modern, high-speed, high-bandwidth FPGA devices. This opens a possibility of making track reconstruction happen transparently as part of the detector readout.

A study of CP violation in $B^\pm \to D K^\pm$ and $B^\pm \to D π^\pm$ decays with $D \to K^0_{\rm S} K^\pm π^\mp$ final states

A first study of CP violation in the decay modes $B^\pm\to [K^0_{\rm S} K^\pm π^\mp]_D h^\pm$ and $B^\pm\to [K^0_{\rm S} K^\mp π^\pm]_D h^\pm$, where $h$ labels a $K$ or $π$ meson and $D$ labels a $D^0$ or $\overline{D}^0$ meson, is performed. The analysis uses the LHCb data set collected in $pp$ collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$. The analysis is sensitive to the CP-violating CKM phase $γ$ through seven observables: one charge asymmetry in each of the four modes and three ratios of the charge-integrated yields. The results are consistent with measurements of $γ$ using other decay modes.

Angular analysis of charged and neutral $B \to K μ^+μ^-$ decays

The angular distributions of the rare decays $B^+ \to K^+μ^+μ^-$ and $B^0 \to K^0_{\rm\scriptscriptstyle S}μ^+μ^-$ are studied with data corresponding to 3$~$fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, collected in proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8$~$TeV centre-of-mass energies with the LHCb detector. The angular distribution is described by two parameters, $F_{\rm H}$ and the forward-backward asymmetry of the dimuon system $A_{\rm FB}$, which are determined in bins of the dimuon mass squared. The parameter $F_{\rm H}$ is a measure of the contribution from (pseudo)scalar and tensor amplitudes to the decay width. The measurements of $A_{\rm FB}$ and $F_{\rm H}$ reported here are the most precise to date and are compatible with predictions from the Standard Model.

Differential branching fractions and isospin asymmetries of $B \to K^{(*)}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decays

The isospin asymmetries of $B \to Kμ^+μ^-$ and $B \to K^{*}μ^+μ^-$ decays and the partial branching fractions of the $B^0 \to K^0μ^+μ^-$, $B^+ \to K^+μ^+μ^-$ and $B^+ \to K^{*+}μ^+μ^-$ decays are measured as functions of the dimuon mass squared, $q^2$. The data used correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3$~$fb$^{-1}$ from proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7$\,$TeV and 8$\,$TeV in 2011 and 2012, respectively. The isospin asymmetries are both consistent with the Standard Model expectations. The three measured branching fractions, while individually consistent, all favour lower values than their respective Standard Model predictions.

Evidence for the decay $B_c^+ \rightarrow J/ψ3π^+ 2π^-$

Evidence is presented for the decay $B_c+\rightarrow J/ψ3π^+2π^-$ using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector. A signal yield of $32\pm8$ decays is found with a significance of 4.5 standard deviations. The ratio of the branching fraction of the $B_c^+\rightarrow J/ψ3π^+ 2π^-$ decay to that of the $B_c^+ \rightarrow J/ψπ^+$ decay is measured to be $$ \frac{Br (B_c^+ \rightarrow J/ψ3π^+2π^)}{Br (B_c^+ \rightarrow J/ψπ^+)} = 1.74\pm0.44\pm0.24, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Evidence for the decay $X(3872)\rightarrowψ(2S)γ$

Evidence for the decay mode $X(3872)\rightarrowψ(2S)γ$ in $B^+\rightarrow X(3872)K^+$ decays is found with a significance of 4.4 standard deviations. The analysis is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector, at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8TeV. The ratio of the branching fraction of the $X(3872)\toψ(2S)γ$ decay to that of the $X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψγ$ decay is measured to be $$ \frac{Br(X(3872)\rightarrowψ(2S)γ)}{Br(X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψγ)} = 2.46\pm0.64\pm0.29, %\pm0.06,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The measured value agrees with expectations for a pure charmonium interpretation of the $X(3872)$ state and a mixture of charmonium and molecular interpretations. However, it does not support a pure $D\bar{D}^{*}$ molecular interpretation of the $X(3872)$state.

First prototype of a silicon tracker using an artificial retina for fast track finding

We report on the R\&D for a first prototype of a silicon tracker based on an alternative approach for fast track finding. The working principle is inspired from neurobiology, in particular by the processing of visual images by the brain as it happens in nature. It is based on extensive parallelisation of data distribution and pattern recognition. In this work we present the design of a practical device that consists of a telescope based on single-sided silicon detectors; we describe the data acquisition system and the implementation of the track finding algorithms using available digital logic of commercial FPGA devices. Tracking performance and trigger capabilities of the device are discussed along with perspectives for future applications.

Measurement of $CP$ asymmetry in $D^0 \rightarrow K^- K^+$ and $D^0 \rightarrow π^- π^+$ decays

Time-integrated $CP$ asymmetries in $D^0$ decays to the final states $K^- K^+$ and $π^- π^+$ are measured using proton-proton collisions corresponding to $3\mathrm{\,fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected at centre-of-mass energies of $7\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$ and $8\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$. The $D^0$ mesons are produced in semileptonic $b$-hadron decays, where the charge of the accompanying muon is used to determine the initial flavour of the charm meson. The difference in $CP$ asymmetries between the two final states is measured to be \begin{align} ΔA_{CP} = A_{CP}(K^-K^+)-A_{CP}(π^-π^+) = (+0.14 \pm 0.16\mathrm{\,(stat)} \pm 0.08\mathrm{\,(syst)})\% \ . \nonumber \end{align} A measurement of $A_{CP}(K^-K^+)$ is obtained assuming negligible $CP$ violation in charm mixing and in Cabibbo-favoured $D$ decays. It is found to be \begin{align} A_{CP}(K^-K^+) = (-0.06 \pm 0.15\mathrm{\,(stat)} \pm 0.10\mathrm{\,(syst)}) \% \ ,\nonumber \end{align} where the correlation coefficient between $ΔA_{CP}$ and $A_{CP}(K^-K^+)$ is $ρ=0.28$. By combining these results, the $CP$ asymmetry in the $D^0\rightarrowπ^-π^+$ channel is $A_{CP}(π^-π^+)=(-0.20\pm0.19\mathrm{\,(stat)}\pm0.10\mathrm{\,(syst)})\%$.

Measurement of $ψ(2S)$ polarisation in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV

The polarisation of prompt $ψ(2S)$ mesons is measured by performing an angular analysis of $ψ(2S)\rightarrow μ^{+} μ^{-}$ decays using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The polarisation is measured in bins of transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T}$ and rapidity $y$ in the kinematic region $3.5<p_\mathrm{T}<15$ GeV$/c$ and $2.0<y<4.5$, and is compared to theoretical models. No significant polarisation is observed.

Measurement of charged particle multiplicities and densities in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7\;$TeV in the forward region

Charged particle multiplicities are studied in proton-proton collisions in the forward region at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 7\;$TeV with data collected by the LHCb detector. The forward spectrometer allows access to a kinematic range of $2.0<η<4.8$ in pseudorapidity, momenta down to $2\;$GeV/$c$ and transverse momenta down to $0.2\;$GeV/$c$. The measurements are performed using minimum-bias events with at least one charged particle in the kinematic acceptance. The results are presented as functions of pseudorapidity and transverse momentum and are compared to predictions from several Monte Carlo event generators.

Measurement of polarization amplitudes and CP asymmetries in $B^0 \to ϕK^*(892)^0$

An angular analysis of the decay $B^0 \to ϕK^*(892)^0$ is reported based on a $pp$ collision data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV with the LHCb detector. The P-wave amplitudes and phases are measured with a greater precision than by previous experiments, and confirm about equal amounts of longitudinal and transverse polarization. The S-wave $K^+ π^-$ and $K^+K^-$ contributions are taken into account and found to be significant. A comparison of the $B^0 \to ϕK^*(892)^0$ and $\bar{B}^0 \to ϕ\bar{K}^*(892)^0$ results shows no evidence for direct CP violation in the rate asymmetry, in the triple-product asymmetries or in the polarization amplitudes and phases.

Measurement of resonant and $CP$ components in $\overline{B}_s^0\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-$ decays

The resonant structure of the decay $\overline{B}_s^0\to J/ψπ^+π^-$ is studied using data corresponding to 3 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity from $pp$ collisions by the LHC and collected by the LHCb detector. Five interfering $π^+π^-$ states are required to describe the decay: $f_0(980),f_0(1500),f_0(1790),f_2(1270)$, and $f_2^{\prime}(1525)$. An alternative model including these states and a non-resonant $J/ψπ^+π^-$ component also provides a good description of the data. Based on the different transversity components measured for the spin-2 intermediate states, the final state is found to be compatible with being entirely $CP$-odd. The $CP$-even part is found to be $<2.3$% at 95% confidence level. The $f_0(500)$ state is not observed, allowing a limit to be set on the absolute value of the mixing angle with the $f_0(980)$ of $<7.7^{\circ}$ at 90% confidence level, consistent with a tetraquark interpretation of the $f_0(980)$ substructure.

Measurement of the $B_c^+$ meson lifetime using $B_c^+ \to J\!/\!ψμ^+ ν_μ X$ decays

The lifetime of the $B_c^+$ meson is measured using semileptonic decays having a $J\!/\!ψ$ meson and a muon in the final state. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $2\mathrm{~fb^{-1}}$, are collected by the LHCb detector in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $8\,\mathrm{TeV}$. The measured lifetime is $$τ= 509 \pm 8 \pm 12 \mathrm{~fs},$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of the $Ξ_b^-$ and $Ω_b^-$ baryon lifetimes

Using a data sample of pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3~ \rm fb^{-1}$, the $Ξ_b^-$ and $Ω_b^-$ baryons are reconstructed in the $Ξ_b^- \rightarrow J/ψΞ^-$ and $Ω_b^- \rightarrow J/ψΩ^-$ decay modes and their lifetimes measured to be $τ(Ξ_b^-) = 1.55\, ^{+0.10}_{-0.09}~{\rm(stat)} \pm 0.03\,{\rm(syst)}$ ps, $τ(Ω_b^-) = 1.54\, ^{+0.26}_{-0.21}~{\rm(stat)} \pm 0.05\,{\rm(syst)}$ ps. These are the most precise determinations to date. Both measurements are in good agreement with previous experimental results and with theoretical predictions.

Measurement of the resonant and CP components in $\overline{B}^0\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-$ decays

The resonant structure of the reaction $\overline{B}^0\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-$ is studied using data from 3 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected by the LHCb experiment, one-third at 7 Tev center-of-mass energy and the remainder at 8 Tev. The invariant mass of the $π^+π^-$ pair and three decay angular distributions are used to determine the fractions of the resonant and non-resonant components. Six interfering $π^+π^-$ states: $ρ(770)$, $f_0(500)$, $f_2(1270)$, $ρ(1450)$, $ω(782)$ and $ρ(1700)$ are required to give a good description of invariant mass spectra and decay angular distributions. The positive and negative CP fractions of each of the resonant final states are determined. The $f_0(980)$ meson is not seen and the upper limit on its presence, compared with the observed $f_0(500)$ rate, is inconsistent with a model of tetraquark substructure for these scalar mesons at the eight standard deviation level. In the $q\overline{q}$ model, the absolute value of the mixing angle between the $f_0(980)$ and the $f_0(500)$ scalar mesons is limited to be less than $17^{\circ}$ at 90% confidence level.

Measurement of Upsilon production in pp collisions at sqrt{s}=2.76 TeV

The production of Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) mesons decaying into the dimuon final state is studied with the LHCb detector using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.3 pb^{-1} collected in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt{s}=2.76 TeV. The differential production cross-sections times dimuon branching fractions are measured as functions of the Upsilon transverse momentum and rapidity, over the ranges p_T<15 GeV/c and 2.0<y<4.5. The total cross-sections in this kinematic region, assuming unpolarised production, are measured to be sigma(pp -> Upsilon(1S) X) x B(Upsilon(1S) -> mu+mu-) = 1.111 +/- 0.043 +/- 0.044 nb, sigma(pp -> Upsilon(2S) X) x B(Upsilon(2S) -> mu+mu-) = 0.264 +/- 0.023 +/- 0.011 nb, sigma(pp -> Upsilon(3S) X) x B(Upsilon(3S) -> mu+mu-) = 0.159 +/- 0.020 +/- 0.007 nb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Measurements of the $B^+$, $B^0$, $B_s^0$ meson and $Λ_b^0$ baryon lifetimes

Measurements of $b$-hadron lifetimes are reported using $pp$ collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $7$Tev. Using the exclusive decays $B^+\to J/ψK^+$, $B^0\to J/ψK^*(892)^0$, $B^0\to J/ψK^0_{\rm S}$, $Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ$ and $B^0_s\to J/ψϕ$ the average decay times in these modes are measured to be $τ_{B^+\to J/ψK^+}$ = $1.637 \pm$ 0.004 $\pm$ 0.003 ps, $τ_{B^0\to J/ψK^*(892)^0}$ = $1.524 \pm$ 0.006 $\pm$ 0.004 ps, $τ_{B^0\to J/ψK^0_{\rm S}}$ = $1.499 \pm$ 0.013 $\pm$ 0.005 ps, $τ_{Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ}$ = $1.415 \pm$ 0.027 $\pm$ 0.006 ps and $τ_{B^0_s\to J/ψϕ}$ = $1.480 \pm$ 0.011 $\pm$ 0.005 ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These represent the most precise lifetime measurements in these decay modes. In addition, ratios of these lifetimes, and the ratio of the decay-width difference, $ΔΓ_d$, to the average width, $Γ_d$, in the $B^0$ system, $ΔΓ_d/Γ_d = -0.044 \pm 0.025 \pm 0.011$, are reported. All quantities are found to be consistent with Standard Model expectations.

Observation of photon polarization in the $b \to sγ$ transition

This Letter presents a study of the flavor-changing neutral current radiative $B^{\pm} \to K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{\pm}γ$ decays performed using data collected in proton-proton collisions with the LHCb detector at $7$ and $8\,$TeV center-of-mass energies. In this sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3\,\text{fb}^{-1}$, nearly $14\,000$ signal events are reconstructed and selected, containing all possible intermediate resonances with a $K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{\pm}$ final state in the $[1.1, 1.9]\,$GeV/$c^{2}$ mass range. The distribution of the angle of the photon direction with respect to the plane defined by the final-state hadrons in their rest frame is studied in intervals of $K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{\pm}$ mass and the asymmetry between the number of signal events found on each side of the plane is obtained. The first direct observation of the photon polarization in the $b \to sγ$ transition is reported with a significance of $5.2\,σ$.

Observation of the $B^{0}_{s}\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^{0} K^{\pm} π^{\mp}$ decay

Decays of the form $B^{0}_{(s)}\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^{0} h^+ h^{\left(\prime\right) -}$ ($h^{(\prime)} = K, π$) are searched for in proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0 \, {\rm fb}^{-1}$ recorded with the LHCb detector. The first observation of the $B^{0}_{s}\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^{0} K^{\pm} π^{\mp}$ decay is reported, with significance in excess of 10 standard deviations. The $B^{0}\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}$ decay is also observed for the first time. The branching fraction of $B^{0}\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ is determined, to significantly better precision than previous measurements, using $B^0 \rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^{0}$ as a normalisation channel. Branching fractions and upper limits of the other $B^{0}_{(s)}\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^{0} h^+ h^{\left(\prime\right) -}$ modes are determined relative to that of the $B^{0}\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ decay.

Observation of the resonant character of the $Z(4430)^-$ state

Resonant structures in $B^0\toψ'π^-K^+$ decays are analyzed by performing a four-dimensional fit of the decay amplitude, using $pp$ collision data corresponding to $\rm 3 fb^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. The data cannot be described with $K^+π^-$ resonances alone, which is confirmed with a model-independent approach. A highly significant $Z(4430)^-\toψ'π^-$ component is required, thus confirming the existence of this state. The observed evolution of the $Z(4430)^-$ amplitude with the $ψ'π^-$ mass establishes the resonant nature of this particle. The mass and width measurements are substantially improved. The spin-parity is determined unambiguously to be $1^+$.

Precision measurement of the ratio of the $Λ^0_b$ to $\overline{B}^0$ lifetimes

The LHCb measurement of the lifetime ratio of the $Λ^0_b$ to the $\overline{B}^0$ meson is updated using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected using 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy $pp$ collisions at the LHC. The decay modes used are $\overline{B}^0\to J/ψp K^-$ and $\overline{B}^0\to J/ψπ^+ K^-$, where the $π^+K^-$ mass is consistent with that of the $\overline{K}^{*0}(892)$ meson. The lifetime ratio is determined with unprecedented precision to be $0.974\pm0.006\pm0.004$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This result is in agreement with original theoretical predictions based on the heavy quark expansion. Using the current world average of the $\overline{B}^0$ lifetime, the $Λ^0_b$ lifetime is found to be $1.479 \pm 0.009 \pm 0.010$ ps.

Search for Majorana neutrinos in $B^- \to π^+μ^-μ^-$ decays

A search for heavy Majorana neutrinos produced in the $B^- \to π^+μ^-μ^-$ decay mode is performed using 3 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb detector in $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV at the LHC. Neutrinos with masses in the range 250-5000 MeV and lifetimes from zero to 1000 ps are probed. In the absence of a signal, upper limits are set on the branching fraction ${\cal{B}}(B^- \to π^+μ^-μ^-)$ as functions of neutrino mass and lifetime. These limits are on the order of $10^{-9}$ for short neutrino lifetimes of 1 ps or less. Limits are also set on the coupling between the muon and a possible fourth-generation neutrino.

Study of $Υ$ production and cold nuclear matter effects in pPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5~\mathrm{TeV}$

Production of $Υ$ mesons in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5 \mathrm{TeV}$ is studied with the LHCb detector. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.6 \mathrm{nb}^{-1}$. The $Υ$ mesons of transverse momenta up to $15 \mathrm{GeV}/c$ are reconstructed in the dimuon decay mode. The rapidity coverage in the centre-of-mass system is $1.5<y<4.0$ (forward region) and $-5.0<y<-2.5$ (backward region). The forward-backward production ratio and the nuclear modification factor for $Υ(1S)$ mesons are determined. The data are compatible with the predictions for a suppression of $Υ(1S)$ production with respect to proton-proton collisions in the forward region, and an enhancement in the backward region. The suppression is found to be smaller than in the case of prompt $J/ψ$ mesons.

First observations of the decays $Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ D_{(s)}^-$ are reported using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ collected at 7 and 8 TeV center-of-mass energy in proton-proton collisions with the LHCb detector. In addition, the most precise measurement of the branching fraction ${\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^+D_s^-)}$ is made and a search is performed for the decays $B^0_{(s)} \to Λ_c^+ Λ_c^-$. The results obtained are \begin{eqnarray*} \mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ D^-)/\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ D_{s}^-) &=& 0.042 \pm 0.003({\rm stat}) \pm 0.003({\rm syst}), \left[\frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ D_{s}^-)}{\mathcal{B}({\kern 0.2em}\overline{\kern -0.2em B}_d^0 \to D^+D_s^-)}\right]\big/\left[\frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+π^-)}{\mathcal{B}({\kern 0.2em}\overline{\kern -0.2em B}_d^0 \to D^+π^-)}\right] &=& 0.96 \pm 0.02({\rm stat}) \pm 0.06({\rm syst}), \mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^+D_s^-)/\mathcal{B}({\kern 0.2em}\overline{\kern -0.2em B}_d^0 \to D^+D_s^-) &=& 0.038\pm0.004({\rm stat})\pm0.003({\rm syst}), \mathcal{B}({\kern 0.2em}\overline{\kern -0.2em B}^0 \to Λ_c^+ Λ_c^-)/\mathcal{B}({\kern 0.2em}\overline{\kern -0.2em B}_d^0 \to D^+D_s^-) & < & 0.0022\; [95\% \; {\rm C.L.}], \mathcal{B}(B^0_{s} \to Λ_c^+ Λ_c^-)/\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^+D_s^-) & < & 0.30\; [95\% \; {\rm C.L.}]. \end{eqnarray*} Measurement of the mass of the $Λ_b^0$ baryon relative to the $B^0$ meson gives ${M(Λ_b^0) -M(B^0) = 339.72\pm 0.24({\rm stat}) \pm 0.18({\rm syst})}$ MeV$/c^2$. This result provides the most precise measurement of the mass of the $Λ_b^0$ baryon to date.

Study of the kinematic dependences of $Λ_b^0$ production in $pp$ collisions and a measurement of the $Λ_b^0 \rightarrow Λ_c^+ π^-$ branching fraction

The kinematic dependences of the relative production rates, $f_{Λ_b^0}/f_d$, of $Λ_b^0$ baryons and $\bar{B}^0$ mesons are measured using $Λ_b^0 \rightarrow Λ_c^+ π^-$ and $\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^+ π^-$ decays. The measurements use proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1 fb$^{-1}$ at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, recorded in the forward region with the LHCb experiment. The relative production rates are observed to depend on the transverse momentum, $p_T$, and pseudorapidity, $η$, of the beauty hadron, in the studied kinematic region $1.5 < p_T < 40$ GeV/$c$ and $2 < η< 5$. Using a previous LHCb measurement of $f_{Λ_b^0}/f_d$ in semileptonic decays, the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \rightarrow Λ_c^+ π^-) = \Big( 4.30 \pm 0.03 \,\, ^{+0.12}_{-0.11} \pm 0.26 \pm 0.21 \Big) \times 10^{-3}$ is obtained, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, the third is from the previous LHCb measurement of $f_{Λ_b^0}/f_d$ and the fourth is due to the $\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^+ π^-$ branching fraction. This is the most precise measurement of a $Λ_b^0$ branching fraction to date.

The artificial retina for track reconstruction at the LHC crossing rate

We present the results of an R&D study for a specialized processor capable of precisely reconstructing events with hundreds of charged-particle tracks in pixel and silicon strip detectors at $40\,\rm MHz$, thus suitable for processing LHC events at the full crossing frequency. For this purpose we design and test a massively parallel pattern-recognition algorithm, inspired to the current understanding of the mechanisms adopted by the primary visual cortex of mammals in the early stages of visual-information processing. The detailed geometry and charged-particle's activity of a large tracking detector are simulated and used to assess the performance of the artificial retina algorithm. We find that high-quality tracking in large detectors is possible with sub-microsecond latencies when the algorithm is implemented in modern, high-speed, high-bandwidth FPGA devices.

The artificial retina processor for track reconstruction at the LHC crossing rate

We present results of an R&D study for a specialized processor capable of precisely reconstructing, in pixel detectors, hundreds of charged-particle tracks from high-energy collisions at 40 MHz rate. We apply a highly parallel pattern-recognition algorithm, inspired by studies of the processing of visual images by the brain as it happens in nature, and describe in detail an efficient hardware implementation in high-speed, high-bandwidth FPGA devices. This is the first detailed demonstration of reconstruction of offline-quality tracks at 40 MHz and makes the device suitable for processing Large Hadron Collider events at the full crossing frequency.

Performance of the TOTEM Detectors at the LHC

The TOTEM Experiment is designed to measure the total proton-proton cross-section with the luminosity-independent method and to study elastic and diffractive pp scattering at the LHC. To achieve optimum forward coverage for charged particles emitted by the pp collisions in the interaction point IP5, two tracking telescopes, T1 and T2, are installed on each side of the IP in the pseudorapidity region 3.1 < = |eta | < = 6.5, and special movable beam-pipe insertions - called Roman Pots (RP) - are placed at distances of +- 147 m and +- 220 m from IP5. This article describes in detail the working of the TOTEM detector to produce physics results in the first three years of operation and data taking at the LHC.

Proton-proton elastic scattering at the LHC energy of {\surd} = 7 TeV

Proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured by the TOTEM experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at {\surd}s = 7 TeV in dedicated runs with the Roman Pot detectors placed as close as seven times the transverse beam size (sbeam) from the outgoing beams. After careful study of the accelerator optics and the detector alignment, |t|, the square of four-momentum transferred in the elastic scattering process, has been determined with an uncertainty of d t = 0.1GeV p|t|. In this letter, first results of the differential cross section are presented covering a |t|-range from 0.36 to 2.5GeV2. The differential cross-section in the range 0.36 < |t| < 0.47 GeV2 is described by an exponential with a slope parameter B = (23.6{\pm}0.5stat {\pm}0.4syst)GeV-2, followed by a significant diffractive minimum at |t| = (0.53{\pm}0.01stat{\pm}0.01syst)GeV2. For |t|-values larger than ~ 1.5GeV2, the cross-section exhibits a power law behaviour with an exponent of -7.8_\pm} 0.3stat{\pm}0.1syst. When compared to predictions based on the different available models, the data show a strong discriminative power despite the small t-range covered.

Search for First-Generation Scalar Leptoquarks in $\bm{p \bar{p}}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV

We report on a search for pair production of first-generation scalar leptoquarks ($LQ$) in $p \bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 203 $pb^{-1}$ collected at the Fermilab Tevatron collider by the CDF experiment. We observe no evidence for $LQ$ production in the topologies arising from $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eqeq$ and $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eq νq$, and derive 95% C.L. upper limits on the $LQ$ production cross section. %as a function of $β$, where $β$ is the branching fraction for $LQ \to eq$. The results are combined with those obtained from a separately reported CDF search in the topology arising from $LQ\bar{LQ} \to νq νq$ and 95% C.L. lower limits on the LQ mass as a function of $β= BR(LQ \to eq) $ are derived. The limits are 236, 205 and 145 GeV/c$^2$ for $β$ = 1, $β$ = 0.5 and $β$ = 0.1, respectively.

Comparison of Three-jet Events in Proton-Antiproton Collisions at Center-of-mass Energy 1.8 TeV to Predictions from a Next-to-leading Order QCD Calculation

The properties of three-jet events with total transverse energy greater than 320 GeV and individual jet energy greater than 20 GeV have been analyzed and compared to absolute predictions from a next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculation. These data, of integrated luminosity 86 pb^-1, were recorded by the CDF Experiment for proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV. This study tests a model of higher order QCD processes that result in gluon emission and can be used to estimate the magnitude of the contribution of processes higher than NLO. The total cross section is measured to be 466 +/- 3(stat.)^{+207}_{-70}(syst.) pb. The differential cross section is furthermore measured for all kinematically accessible regions of the Dalitz plane, including those for which the theoretical prediction is unreliable. While the measured cross section is consistent with the theoretical prediction in magnitude, the two differ somewhat in shape in the Dalitz plane.
