Enhanced magnetism and suppressed magnetoelastic coupling induced by electron doping in Ca$_{1-x}$Y$_{x}$MnReO$_6$

The Ca$_2$MnReO$_6$ double perovskite is a spin-orbit-assisted Mott insulator with exotic magnetic properties, including a largely non-collinear Mn$^{2+}$ spin arrangement and nearly orthogonal coupling between such spins and the much smaller Re $5d$ magnetic moments. Here, the electron-doped compound Ca$_{1.7}$Y$_{0.3}$MnReO$_6$ is investigated. Neutron and X-ray powder diffraction confirm that nearly full chemical order is maintained at the Mn and Re sites under the Y substitution at the Ca site. X-ray absorption measurements and an analysis of the Mn-O/Re-O bond distances show that the Mn oxidation state remains stable at +2 whereas Re is reduced upon doping. The electron doping increases the magnetic ordering temperature from $T_c = 121$ to $150$ K and also enhances significantly the ferromagnetic component of the Mn spins at the expense of the antiferromagnetic component at the base temperature ($T=3$ K). The lattice parameter anomalies at $T_c$ observed in the parent compound are suppressed by the electron doping. The possible reasons for the enhanced magnetism and the suppressed magnetoelastic coupling in Ca$_{1.7}$Y$_{0.3}$MnReO$_6$ are discussed.

Mesoscopic correlations in Tb2Ti2O7 spin liquid

We have studied the spin correlations with $\bf{k}$= ($\frac12$, $\frac12$, $\frac12$) propagation vector which appear below 0.4\, K in \tbti\ spin liquid by combining powder neutron diffraction and specific heat on Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ samples with $x$=0, 0.01, -0.01. The $\bf{k}$= ($\frac12$, $\frac12$, $\frac12$) order clearly appears on all neutron patterns by subtracting a pattern at 1.2(1)\,K. Refining the subtracted patterns at 0.07\,K yields two possible spin structures, with spin-ice-like and monopole-like correlations respectively. Mesoscopic correlations involve Tb moments of 1 to 2 \mub\ ordered on a length scale of about 20 Å. In addition, long range order involving a small spin component of 0.1 to 0.2 \mub\ is detected for the $x$= 0 and 0.01 samples showing a peak in the specific heat. Comparison with previous single crystals data suggests that the ($\frac12$, $\frac12$, $\frac12$) order settles in through nanometric spin textures with dominant spin ice character and correlated orientations, analogous to nanomagnetic twins.

Detailed neutron diffraction study of magnetic order in NdFe$_2$Al$_{10}$

The orthorhombic compound NdFe$_2$Al$_{10}$ has been studied by powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction. Below $T_N$ = 3.9 K, the Nd$^{3+}$ magnetic moments order in a double-$k$ [$\mathbf{k}_1 = (0, \frac{3}{4}, 0)$, $\mathbf{k}_2 = (0, \frac{1}{4}, 0)$] collinear magnetic structure, whose unit cell consists of four orthorhombic units in the $b$ direction. The refinements show that this structure consists of (0 1 0) ferromagnetic planes stacked along $b$, in which the moments are oriented parallel to $a$ (the easy anisotropy axis according to bulk magnetization measurements) and nearly equal in magnitude ($\approx 1.7-1.9\ μ_B$). The alternating 8-plane sequence providing the best agreement to the data turns out to be that which yields the lowest exchange energy if one assumes antiferromagnetic near-neighbor exchange interactions with $J_1 \gg J_2, J_3$. With increasing temperature, the single-crystal measurements indicate the suppression of the $\mathbf{k}_2$ component at $T = 2.7$ K, supporting the idea that the anomalies previously observed around 2--2.5 K result from a squaring transition. In a magnetic field applied along the $a$ axis, the magnetic Bragg satellites disappear at $H_c = 2.45$ T, in agreement with earlier measurements. Comparisons are made with related magnetic orders occurring in Ce$T_2$Al$_{10}$ ($T$: Ru, Os) and TbFe$_2$Al$_{10}$.

Preparation, structural, dielectric and magnetic properties of LaFeO3-PbTiO3 solid solutions

Solid solutions of (1-x)LaFeO3-(x)PbTiO3 (0<x<1) have been prepared by conventional solid-state reaction. These complex perovskites have been studied by means of X-ray (XRPD) and neutron powder (NPD) diffraction, complemented with dielectric, magnetic, heat capacity and Mössbauer measurements. Complete solubility in the perovskite series was demonstrated. The NPD and XRPD patterns were successfully refined as orthorhombic (x \leq 0.7) and tetragonal (x \geq 0.8). A composition-driven phase transformation occurs within the interval 0.7<x<0.8. The samples with x<0.5 showed evidence of long-range magnetic ordering with an G-type antiferromagnetic arrangement of the magnetic moments of the Fe3+ cations in the B-site with propagation vector k = (0,0,0). Based on the obtained experimental data, a combined structural and magnetic phase diagram has been constructed. The factors governing the structural, dielectric and magnetic properties of (1-x) LaFeO3 - (x)PbTiO3 solid solutions are discussed, as well as their possible multiferroicity.

Correlations of structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties of undoped and doped CaCu3Ti4O12

The present work reports synthesis, as well as a detailed and careful characterization of structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties of differently tempered undoped and doped CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) ceramics. For this purpose, neutron and x-ray powder diffraction, SQUID measurements, and dielectric spectroscopy have been performed. Mn-, Fe-, and Ni-doped CCTO ceramics were investigated in great detail to document the influence of low-level doping with 3d metals on the antiferromagnetic structure and dielectric properties. In the light of possible magnetoelectric coupling in these doped ceramics, the dielectric measurements were also carried out in external magnetic fields up to 7 T, showing a minor but significant dependence of the dielectric constant on the applied magnetic field. Undoped CCTO is well-known for its colossal dielectric constant in a broad frequency and temperature range. With the present extended characterization of doped as well as undoped CCTO, we want to address the question why doping with only 1% Mn or 0.5% Fe decreases the room-temperature dielectric constant of CCTO by a factor of ~100 with a concomitant reduction of the conductivity, whereas 0.5% Ni doping changes the dielectric properties only slightly. In addition, diffraction experiments and magnetic investigations were undertaken to check for possible correlations of the magnitude of the colossal dielectric constants with structural details or with magnetic properties like the magnetic ordering, the Curie-Weiss temperatures, or the paramagnetic moment. It is revealed, that while the magnetic ordering temperature and the effective moment of all investigated CCTO ceramics are rather similar, there is a dramatic influence of doping and tempering time on the Curie-Weiss constant.
